I don't like writing poor reviews, but our experience was definitely sub-par. The food was copious and cheap, but really nothing special. The waiter even told us to avoid the soup (yikes!). I have been dying for real Mexican food since I moved to Corvallis. I've been disappointed for quite a while but holy crap I'm glad I stopped at this place! Great restaurant when the owner Pancho is there. When he's there, I'd give it 5 stars. The rest of the time, I'd give it 3 (sorry Pancho, it just ain't the same when you're not in the building and I know you can't be there all the time). If you order take out with tortillas, check your order before you leave. I order mostly take out as I live 10 blocks away down Hill Street. 3 out of 5 times they forget the tortillas in my order. I've been here twice and I just can't get enough. The decor is delightful: the owner said he had to wait 6 months because the chairs and booths were hand painted in Guadalajara! We started with the table side guacamole and it did not disappoint. I could eat this for days. My mom got the fajitas (her go-to) and she loved it. Parking is good both off and on street, the restaurant is clean and provides the well known traditional Mexican decor. Seating is spaced appropriately and allows for a comfortable dining experience without feeling like your sitting on the person next you. Wait staff are friendly. Menu provides a good variety and the prices are appropriate and portion sizes better than average. As for taste...you won't be disappointed. Really good food. Reasonable prices. The only downside is they are not so willing to refill your salsa and chips. It's funny because the folks who own it have another location down the road about 12 miles that goes by a different name. I can't remember it at the moment but I went their also and that is when I found out about the ownership of La Roca. I mentioned at this other location about them not very willing to refill the salsa and chips and they nodded in agreement. So apparently I am not the only person to mention this. I have been to La Roca 3 times. 2 dine-in, one take out. The most recent being take out and what left a bad taste in my mouth. The food at La Roca is delicious. Lean and well marinated meats, decent tortillas, food lacking the heavy greasiness and overwhelming sauces of many mexican restaurants around here. Their happy hour taco specials are also great, but I wouldn't pay full price. I've had their super burritos a couple times and I love them. Last night I ordered their flautas for the first time. They were incorrectly made. Flautas should be made in FLOUR tortillas, not corn. This subtlety makes a HUGE difference. Although they were packed full of delicious chicken they were also a bit dry and didn't appear "deep fried" as the menu suggests. Typically a well-made flauta has a light, crispy "melt in your mouth" crunch. I felt like I was eating an enchilada without sauce. If they read reviews and adjust this recipe to be correct, it will be amazing. Now for why I knocked off a star. When I picked up my to-go order I received 1 measly 1oz container of salsa, half full. Do you really expect that to cover two entire meals AND the chips you put in the bag? Upon seeing that I asked if I could have red and green sauce and one of the guys said they were out of the salsa verde....I have no right to assume, but I felt suspicious of this being true since it was only 7pm but hey, it may have been. I then prodded further because there was no way I was going home without enough salsa to cover all of the food and the other guy finally went back to get me more and only brought out another 1oz cup half full. This is disappointing. If you offer large amounts of salsa in house for patrons you can at least provide take out customers even 1/4 of that amount to take home. Your take out customers are also your dine in customers. Salsa is cheap. It's not worth losing a loyal customer over being stingy with your sauce. Mexican food is nothing without the salsa and this is the first place I've ever been shorted so badly on salsa. Fix this, start making the flautas with flour tortillas and you have 4.5 stars, easy. read more

Normally my family loves this place, so naturally we took family here, that are visiting from out of state. My main complaint is about the staff who did our table side guacamole, something we order often. He was training (and quite young), which is totally fine, but he said a few inappropriate things. He would look at the staff member training him when giving instructions and say "Jesus" as his response. Once the avocados and ingredients were in the bowl he said "ok, so now I just beat the crap out of it?" Mind you, my 6yo daughter was with us and head it all. Just WOW. In town for a wedding. Went here with relatives for a Sunday evening meal. Got right in and noticed right off the place was very clean, bright and welcoming. Our server greeted us quickly and took out drink orders. Chips and salsa appeared quickly and the salsa was amazing. Drinks came and we ordered our food. It came out quickly and you could tell it was fresh. All in our group enjoyed their meal choices. I had the spinach burrito and it was great. Very tasty and a huge portion. It may not be the very best Mexican food I've ever had, but it's up there! I read an article that said that the restaurant is small and parking is insufficient, but neither of these descriptions entirely fit my experience. It is not a large restaurant, but there are plenty of tables and it is spacious. We were seated in the back area. A large-screen television was playing "Everybody Loves Raymond" re-runs and the volume was on softly enough that we could either talk or veg out and watch and be fine either way. The service was friendly, and my first impression (the chips and salsa) was VERY good. The chips were fresh and perfectly salted, and there were 3 dips available: a yummy bean dip, a chunkier salsa (the ingredients were fresh with just a hint of a kick) and a sweeter, darker, more pureed salsa. I have no idea what it was but it tasted wonderful. We ordered Margaritas, and they were HUGE, and pretty decent. I tend to be a bit picky about Margaritas, and dislike it when they taste sugary or grainy, but neither was the case here. For dinner, I ordered the 2-item combo, selecting 1 tamale and 1 chile relleno. The tamale was very good (I like it when they keep the sauce they put on top to a minimum, and that was the case here), and the chile relleno was good as well. (My first bite was a bit of a letdown, as I could not tell that it was the stem of the chile before I bit into it! But it was all good from there.) Good for my tastebuds but not so much my waistline: the entire plate was covered in plentiful, delicious cheese. MMMMMMMM! We will be back! read more

La Roca does not disappoint. Party of two enjoyed the complimentary chips, plate of beans, and the mild salsa. A carnitas torta, Mexican pizza, and table side guacamole completed our order. The pizza was crisp with beans, ground beef and cheese. So tasty I ate the whole thing. My husband enjoyed his torta and enhanced its deliciousness by adding a little guacamole to it. After looking on yelp for a new Mexican restaurant in town, we decided to try La Roca. Tonight was the second time we'd eaten there and it was excellent both times. My husband had a Cadillac margarita and said it was very good. Service was good too. If you're into guacamole, have the table side guacamole, it's really good! There has been road construction on Hill street, which has had a negative effect on their business, but it's about over and I'm hopeful they can be busy again. We ate outside, as their air conditioning was a bit too cold inside, and we love to eat outside anyway. read more

This is a great place for Mexican food in Albany. The food is fantastic and the employees are friendly. As well as the restaurant well kept and clean with cheerful decor. We live close to this but never stopped in because most of the other Mexican restaurants near us are not good. But we wanted a change of pace tonight and had a pleasant surprise. We order fajitas and a combo meal. Both came out fresh, hot and with generous servings. And I had a iced tea with a lime instead of a lemon with it. Not only was this unique but tasty as well. We will be sure to visit more often. It might be off the beaten path for most but it is well worth getting a way from the main traffic areas for this great find. read more

Mother's Day - my fav foreign food is Mexican - we were halfway to Albany when the wife decided for MD she wanted Mexican. We googled and found La Roca. The good: Décor is very nice - that's all The bad: The first brought about half a small bowl of chips and probably 1/4" of beans for dip, with a small Salsa bowl. The older guy, I'm guessing the owner, we tried to order shrimp fajitas he didn't understand so I tried Spanish - he raised his hand and told me he was listening to her. Not at all friendly. Son tried to order tacos, Pastor - "we don't have pastor" - he wanted only 2 tacos - nope have to buy the 12.95 plate with rice and beans. So he got carnitas - which I told him was good. It wasn't - it was like boiled beef or pork with zero zip flavoring, nothing else on taco shells. He didn't eat half of one of them. Wife's shrimp fajitas were underwhelming (she actually said she ate some at Rockita in Corvallis last week which were "10 times better". My nachos were more than underwhelming. I asked for more salsa and he rudely pointed me to the Tapatio bottle - I said no I want Salsa, two of those. He brought me a slightly larger bowl (still not enough) - and when I paid - I FOUND HE CHARGED ME FOR IT. I don't write many lousy reviews - but this one deserved it - wish I had read the negative reviews before I went there and spent $45 - there was a Taco Truck at Costco, and I'd bet money it was superior - but I felt like I wished I could barf out the nachos I tried to eat so I would have room for good food - but alas, not really into sticking my finger down my throat. If you want great food and great service, this is the place to be. We came a little late after not able to get service at Ixtapa in Lebanon (but that is a completely different story). We got seated right away and someone came to take our drink orders. We both ordered a classic Margarita on the rocks and they were great! They not only took our order in a timely manner, they periodically checked on us but not in a creepy hovering manner. It doesn't matter who your server it, many different people will make sure you have what you need (excellent service!). My husband ordered the trio combo (chili verde, chili colorado & chili reinollo(?)). He wasn't crazy about the chili verde, but he has never like that wherever we go. I had the mocajata (?), which is steak, onions, mushrooms, & tomatoes in a mild tomato type broth. It was very good. The service here is lack luster. Every time I order a soda, I maybe get 1 refill before I leave simply because the guy doesn't come to my table more than once while I'm eating. This frustrates me because I don't want to pay $2.99 for a drink if I only get 2. Also takes a long time to get the check, and then you wait even longer for the guy (again) to come to the cash register for you to pay (can't pay at the table for some weird reason). We moved to Oregon from New Mexico and have spent many months traveling around Mexico and other parts of Latin America. La Roca is the best Mexican Restaurant in the Corvallis / Albany area by far no questions asked. The food is healthy, high quality and delightfully tasty. The service was supreme and the owners of the restaurant could not have been more friendly. We always get steak fajitas and this time was no different. We also got the mole enchiladas. Both dishes were excellent. After living here for several years we have finally found a Mexican restaurant which we believe is superb.
