Party of 11 around Christmas time. The server seemed confused. Eventually took everyone's order. The server then came back to our table and said he had to take our order again. ??? Maybe we didn't order enough apps or maybe the people at the other end of the table took more than they should or maybe it was the portion size because when the plates came down to our end they were almost empty. (Probably not the restaurants fault) The food was ok. It seemed a bit overpriced (Upper Montclair pricing) It is a BYOB. I drink beer so I asked for a chilled mug or glass. Never got it. I asked for water, never got it. Wasn't my choice to go here. We also traveled from Ocean County to go here. Won't go again. Not impressed at all. read more

A solid 4 in my opinion after a quick trip to Jersey with the beau and his sister and her beau for the night and following day. Service was good and rather prompt with water service. I will speak for my beau and I that we were rather thirsty and our water glasses were filled rather quickly. The restaurant was quaint and rather quiet and reminded us of being home back on LI. There was a birthday dinner party that was wrapping up when we were just arriving and didn't bother us too much. I finally got my rock shrimp arrabiatta fix and damn it was good. Low key wish I had more bread to sop up the juice but such is life. We ate it all basically before our dinner came. I'm going to have to figure out a way to make it so I can have it again with all the bread I want! Everyone else seemed to enjoy their dinners. Will we back? Maybe? Great service, absolutely delicious food, and simple, clean ambiance. We ordered the eggplant rollatine which they separated onto two dishes for us without our asking (absolutely to die for). Went back for a second time to see if it was going to be consistent and it was excellent, great service excellent food!

I don't write many reviews and I'm a tough critic but the food here was out of this world. My go-to is chicken parm. It's a simple dish but I think it was the nest I've ever had. The sauce made it. My wife and companions all had the haddock and each liked it. The tartufo and cappuccinos were also really good. A little pricey bit worth it on a holiday. We last ate here about 3 years ago, and weren't impressed. This revisit was somewhat better. Despite its French name, this is an Italian restaurant. Appetizers (minestrone soup and asparagus/avocado salad) were much better this time. My wife once again ordered zuppe de pesce, and again received a seafood fra diavolo, over pasta -- a decent rendering, but not what she ordered. My eggplant lasagna was fine. Looking for a nice authentic Italian dinner? This is the place to go! The appetizer for two was just right. My husband had tortellini in carbonara sauce. I had chicken francese. Concluding our dinner was a tasteful chocolate lava cake. Our bill was a total of $82. The biggest benefit to this was the option of byob. We had made 7pm reservations and were running late so called to push it half an hour. With no problem they changed it. We ended up arriving an extra half hour later and with no hesitation we were still seated promptly. Our waiter was attentive in all perspectives. read more

Service was inexperienced, but ok overall. However, food was not good. Also, the table near us was allowed to bring their dog (poodle) inside the restaurant. It was too small to be a service dog. Dog sat on a woman's lap and was quiet through out, but not sure if NJ state law allows pets inside at the table unless there were special needs. Salad dressing was very salty and inedible. Too bad, the fennel and arugula was actually very fresh. Antipasta for 2 appetizers had tiny shrimps that you would find in a shrimp fried rice dish in a cheap chinese take out. The mussels and clams all tasted frozen and some were not fresh. I had to spit some of them out. We left half the dish uneaten. Linguine Marechiarra was cooked properly al dente, but the seafood again was the same poor quality as the anti pasta dish. They put in 1 scallop and cut it in half for an entire entree. read more

I have not been to this storefront restaurant in years, but used to frequent it often and enjoyed the food and service. Curiosity brought me back when I heard that there was a new restaurant or owner here. Same restaurant. New owner. We talked to the new owner. He was chef for old owner and bought the place. Got there very early, in fact the place was just opening at five. So naturally, there was no crowd, service was fast and friendly and we got to talk to the new owner for a minute. The menu was extensive with many choices and also a list of specials. I was happy to see a large variety of veal dishes. I tried a new veal dish off their specials menu. It was delicious and more importantly, the veal was very tender. Years ago, the place used to be packed and busy. From what I heard, it still is. But it was kinda nice to be there so early and have time to talk to the new owner, and have a delicious quiet meal. Now that I have rediscovered the place, I will be back It is BYOB. read more

La Couronne is a very nice local BYOB spot which is a great alternative to the over-hyped, noisy Montclair restaurants. A menu that has something for everyone, the food is cooked to perfection and the owner and staff are very genuine and attentive. My "Go To" dishes are the white bean salad and the eggplant lasagna. This spot is perfect for an intimate family get together where you can keep the check down by bringing your own wine and beer. I've been coming off and on to La Couronne for years and recently became reacquainted when we had dinner with some good friends from the South End. They wanted Chinese and we had just had Chinese so we compromised on Italian. La Couronne was terra incognita to them and I feel proud that they loved their meals, and now trust us even more than before, gastronomically speaking. First of all, to the prior reviewers here - Allison and James. Allison, perhaps you're too young to have noticed that this is a restaurant, not Eagen's or Tierney's or the Office, or Diva Lounge. Smart people come here for the food, although there was a group of young hotties at the next table and they didn't seem to mind us old and decrepit, over-the-hill, just can't get it up no more old folks from down on the farm. It's probably true that Yelpers are a hip bunch in general, but you're a fool if you think that hipness fades out when you reach 30. And James, I'm completely with you, my man. I, too, am a food snob so it's rare that I give any restaurant more than three stars. (BTW, when are you going to invite me over for dinner? I'll trade you some of my Texas smoked brisket and home-made BBQ sauce for whatever you're cookin.) I don't remember what I had after that second bottle of wine, but do I recall that my wife's Veal Parm was exceptional!!! And she's hard to please. Preface: I think reviews are helpful if you know where the reviewer is coming from, so here it is: I am a food snob. The food I make at home tends to be better than what I can afford in a restaurant, so I'm not easily impressed. I wasn't blown away by La Couronne, but it was good. La Couronne was pretty good. I had a pasta with Bolognese sauce. It was OK. Very tasty, but I thought the sauce was a little blander than it should have been. Could have used more garlic, more basil, and another 45 minutes of simmering. But, my wife ordered the Penne Vodka and that was really amazing. One of the best I've had. We also ordered the calamari appetizer and it came in a ginger honey sauce that I really enjoyed. Above posters are correct that this place is mostly attended by older folks, but I came for the food, not the scenery. One really great thing about the location is that because it is in the Watchung Plaza and not on Bloomfield Ave., there is ample free parking. Not so in Center Montclair. For that reason, and because their menu had a enough interesting things to keep trying, I will definitely go back. read more

Lovely quiet spot in Watchung Plaza. This BYOB has an old school Italian menu and crowd, but if you are looking for good service and excellent quality food this is the spot for you. We started with mussels which were tasty. Their homemade pastas, such as the daily spinach ravioli with garlic sauce I had, were delicious. My companion enjoyed her special eggplant lasagna entrée. There are plenty of desserts including gelatos. Plenty of local parking in the area which makes it a good choice in Montclair where parking can be an issue. The Italian food here is very good. I've been here several times entertaining work associates, and everyone is very pleased by their entrees and salads. Nice homemade pastas, great fish dishes, really fresh salads, in general the food is very, very good. The reason I'm not giving this place more stars is twofold. 1) you can practically smell the Bengay when you walk in this place. Total geiserville. Since yelpers tend to be a hip bunch, I wanted to provide fair warning. The ambiance kind of reminds me of having dinner with my grandmother at her nursing home. 2) The desserts are AWFUL. I ordered NY Cheesecake and what I got was pre-packaged cheesecake that's been sitting in the fridge for too long. With a side of marachino cherry. Marachino cherry? really? I didn't order a shirley temple! For a place that has such good food otherwise, the desserts are appalling. This place has potential. The food here is delicious and the restaurant keeps it relatively simple. I would recommend sticking to the specials/pasta for your main courses since these seem to be the best in my opinion. The pastas are simple and tasty. Everything tastes well and the setting is relaxed and quiet which is refreshing since so many restaurants now-a-days are booming with music and people shouting at one another so they can hear each other from across the table. It does good business and people regularly come back which is a a sign of a good restaurant. I have been here many times over the years and I will be back in the future. My favorite dishes include the bolognese dishes or the carbonara (be warned, it's very heavy!). I cannot speak about their desserts, but the food is tasty and made with care. Very good Italian food! Wide menu, plus specials of the week, a little pricey but it is worth it. If you want more of a bargain try the $31 five course price fix Monday through Thursday. We had the Tre Colore Salad, White Bean Salad, and Linguine Marechiara with lots of seafood and enough sauce to qualify as soup. More than enough to take part home as a second meal. Definitely slow paced. BYOB. Took one star off because it was amazingly noisy (even after most diners left it was still noisy), and the waiter sat down at the next table to have a drink and I really had to work to get the check from him. read more

The host/owner is absolutely fabulous...he's so classic and straight up, very accommodating and personable. This is my first impression of a nice evening out with the fam. I can't complain about the service either, they do their job n leave u alone but viola-my water glass is always full. Ambiance is more classy n cozy. Food...mmmm...they do a fine job with their sauces and each dish is perfection. Whoever their chef is, knows how to do sauce. We are sad when we don't reserve and don't get to eat there when we have a taste for it. But the host/owner is so genuinely apologetic and kind, we walk away satisfied...hungry but satisfied. Fantastic spot for a classic Italian dinner. The formal but unpretentious ambiance makes it a great choice for any kind of gathering whether between friends, family, or romantic partners. My companion and I shared the stuffed mushrooms; veal picante and seafood pasta specials; and finished out by splitting a tiramisu as well as the profiteroles. All of the dishes were perfectly balanced both in flavor and texture leaving me anxious for each ensuing course. Wonderful food and great service. The staff is friendly and attentive even on the busiest days (i.e. Mothers Day). The atmosphere is casual and relaxed and you are able to hold a dinner table conversation without shouting without the annoying din. Quiet is so nice these days!!! So happy that they have gluten free pasta options available and the fettuccine Alfredo is superb. Also salmon is wonderful and all of the salads fresh and well dressed. Portions are just the right size and my family leaves satisfied but not stuffed. Great for special occasions or just when you crave really good Italian cuisine!! Review of the pizza only. I've heard fantastic hints about this place and decided to try their thin crust pizza. Three stars seems fair but I feel a little bad not going higher. Let me explain why. The crust is a cracker-like thin crust. They dock the dough after it goes through a sheeter. This keeps the crusts uniform, thin, and prevents bubbling. The crust, however, lacks flavor. I am a huge fan of this type of crust but it's just lacking. Federici's in Freehold makes their crust the same way but it is much more flavorful. The cheese is good; firm, evenly cooked, and the sauce is light and not overly acidic. It all comes together nicely but I just wish there were something that the crust added in terms of flavor. I hope to try their entrees soon. read more
