La Scala of Randolph, Massachusetts is my home away from home. La Scala has consistently provided a wide selection of amazing Italian cuisine over 40 years. All my most memorable celebrations with my family have been at La Scala. I never tire of their menu. There is so much to choose from. Each regional dish is done to perfection. If I had one wish to offer, it would be that they supply extra virgin olive oil on the table for their bread. Butter is not a healthy option. I highly recommend you try this wonderful restaurant. My wife and I went to La Scala for lunch today when we were in the neighborhood. The staff was very friendly and the menu had many great traditional options. Our server made some great recommendations off the menu that all came out great. Overall, we were both very happy with our meals. The food and service was great and the prices were very reasonable. I'm a firm believer that your experience is only as good as your point of contact at any restaurant. Our waitress was overworked, brand new or extremely satisfied with being awful. It was my dad's birthday and he had gone to La Scala's in the past when it was under a different regime and listed it in his top 3 favorite restaurants. A friend recommended the restaurant to me and raved about the service - he must've gone to La Scala a long time ago as well. The waitress never introduced herself and jumped right into "are you ready to order drinks." We weren't so she left and came back. We were all struggling to find the drinks on the main menu. We asked if she had a separate drink menu and she replied that they didn't and only serve wine and sangria and draft bottles - which we all found to be weird. We ordered appetizers and the oysters never came. I asked one of the bussers and he said he was just a busser and was sure the oysters would come out soon. Our waitress never came back out to check on us. It was my dad's birthday and the man wanted to drink! Several minutes passed after we finished the appetizers before she came out. She seemed frazzled about the oysters and said they were probably waiting in the kitchen. She brought them out and finally took our order. And finally got everyone their second round.... My girlfriend ordered the same meal as me, but asked for white sauce at the recommendation of the waitress. When she went to take the calamari off the table she dropped a marinara container on my sister's shoulder and ruined her shirt.... Accidents happen, but things were starting to add up... When the food came out she apologized to my girlfriend, "sorry there's actually only one sauce for this meal, it's red" She left and never came back to check on drinks. She came back at the end of the meal and asked if we were ready for the bill? We asked for a desert menu and SURPRISE the drink menu was inside the desert menu.... The food was ok. The service not so good. I wouldn't go there again and you shouldn't either. Unlike the other reviews we had the heads up that this place is CASH only. I would say La Scala is a mediocre Italian restaurant at best. Maybe years ago this was the place to be. I have nothing bad to say about the staff, as everyone was pleasant, however, the food was a step below Bertucci's. I ordered the Chicken parmigiana. Chicken bona boca was absolutely terrible. I have had this dish at various restaurants and this was by far the worst. Hardly edible. Chicken tasted like it had actually tasted as if had turned rotten. Tomato mozzarella basil app was drowned in balsamic instead of drizzled. This was to either to cover up the unripe tomatoes or just a horrible presentation that looked as tossed. the garlic bread was awful. Dollar tree garlic bread tastes better. We won't return. This is a cool quaint cash inly establishment. But Italian and not forward thinking Italian to a fault. So... if you don't want pasta. Don't go. The service was excellent and the servings are very large but the food is mediocre. It was simply okay.

The biggest issue is the amount of oil in the food. What concerns me is - what is the oil? If it's olive oil and or butter: good. I don't have faith in that proposition. The sauce is good. However, we asked for meat sauce on our pasta. They said they don't serve meat sauce as a side. REALLY?!?!? Such a simple request ?!? It would have made the meal far more satisfactory. Excellent service. Nice environment. Very busy place. Mostly old timers. So nostalgia is a driving force. Not sure if we will return. read more

GOODBYE LA SCALA!! went a couple of weeks ago for the Seafood Medley Scampi; Could not chew the lobster meat; (tough); Owners son came over and asked for a chance to please fix it. He did and it was great! So, we took a friend back there last night; Same thing; We both ordered the Medley and this time didn't say anything; Just paid the bill and left; Didn't taste fresh and the seafood was definitely overcooked. I had never heard of this place and had no interest to try them. My wife and I went there just to attend a party. I'm no Italian food expert so this review will be based solely on my personal taste. First impression, the restaurant was very nice and definitely feel like fine dining. Well decorated and good lighting. We came with a group of 11 people so we got to try many different dishes. Our waitress, Jessica, was very nice, friendly, and professional. She provided answers to all the questions. She was attentive and gave out good recommendation. In fact, because of the restaurant atmosphere and the wonderful service, I gave it 4 stars instead of 3. The reason that it would have rated 3 stars is mainly because of the food. They are either hit or miss. Some of the dishes that we ordered were average but some of them were absolutely wonderful. Let's start with those dishes we didn't care for so much. The two salads that we ordered were just simple and nothing fancy. Antipasto was well... alright, some boiled eggs, cucumber, couple sliced tomatoes, lettuce, somethings else and a thin sliced of cured meat. My dish, oh! my dish, Sauté scallop. Don't get me wrong, they were generous with there portion but the sauce was overly sweet. Good thing that they provided condiments on the table so I fixed it myself. No big deal but I was just a bit disappointed. I expected more from them, like some garnish or somethings. Interestingly, the side dish, stuffed cheese ravioli, was quite good. My wife ordered a simple linguini with garlic and oil. They couldn't do it. Instead, they gave her linguini with red sauce with a sad looking garlic and oil sauce in a separate cup. This mistake turned out to be good because their red sauce was delicious. If they had brought over the right dish, my wife plate would have been soaked in oil like my friend's dish. My friend, she literally tilted her plate and scooped out all the excess oil on her pasta. You don't have to believe me but it was true. Now, let's talk about the great stuff. As I mentioned earlier, the atmosphere and the staff were wonderful. There were few dishes that we had that were simply awesome. Rack of lambs, recommended by our server, was amazing. It was moist and nicely done. The sauce was spot on. There were no gamy smell at all. I would absolutely go back for this one. Fried calamari appetizer was excellent. Crisp, fresh and light fluffy battered, job well done. Last but not least, seafood medley over linguini, it was absolutely amazing. All the ingredients compliment each other nicely. It was perfect for me. Great portion. To my conclusion, I think this restaurant has a good potential to be great again. It will take a lot of energy and inspiration. I'm not sure they will have it since they have been there for generations. And sadly, it's always loose it's magic. I wish they could have created all there dishes equally extraordinary. Until then, if you want a successful fine dining experience, stick to the three dishes I recommended here. read more

Linguini carborana Pros- the amount of food and the service . Also the decor is very nice and it remind of Italy Cons- taste. The pasta too enriched and heavy. The amount of salt and pepper was excessive. I probably would not go back but since i did not have the full experience (because I had take out ) I will most likely give it another try. read more

Not impressed, won't go back. Our office is nearby, we ordered takeout from La Scala for an office lunch, and not one of us was impressed. To start with, when we called our order in, the person taking our order literally said "I don't have time for this." The shrimp cocktail appetizer was tiny - six rubbery shrimp. The caesar salad was $10 for a handful of lettuce. The sauce is watery, the portions are small, and everything is overpriced. I hate to leave a bad review for a family restaurant but I was not a fan... -Finger marks and smudges on the new glasses when we were seated. -Food was ehh, breading on the chicken and veal parm was especially bad, soggy and just tasted bad. -chicken cutlet with the chicken parm dish came swimming, almost submerged in thin oily sauce that I didn't care for. My husband drove by there one day coming home from work and loved the way the building looked. Like old Italian houses in Italy. We brought our kids there which are very picky and they all loved their food. My youngest tried his and said it was worth the wait, since we had to wait for the Italian clambake.My husband ordered the Italian clambake dinner and was super impressed. Every bite was delicious. I tried this restaurant for the first time on New Year's Eve. Service was impeccable. Very attentive waitress and food came out at a good pace, not too quick, not taking hours. The food was unbelievable. From the fresh bread with garlic dipping sauce, to my baked ziti and sorbet for dessert. The baked ziti dish was so big there was an audible gasp from my fellow diners. It was hands down the best baked ziti I've ever had. The wine was good and reasonably priced and the shot of zambuca with coffee beans in it was enormous. Best of all, the prices made me feel like I was in a time machine, especially the entree prices. A great value for the money. Great ambience in the restaurant and super clean bathrooms. Be very careful if you come in contact with the owner. He scared me senseless . I needed to get cash out of the atm machine since they don't accept credit cards and the ATM machine was empty. I was annoyed obviously because what restaurant doesn't accept credit cards. So i asked the bus boy to tell the owner. He filled the machine and said "don't worry you won't be charged 2 fees"Me being snarking i said, "yeah i know" he did not like that At all!! I went to retrieve the money and i couldn't get the ATM to take my card. I told another worker and he got the owner. Michael came bombing down the hall, whipped out his credit card got $20 dollars and held it up to me and said, "do you see this, it's money, what are you doing wrong". I was scared and humiliated. This is probably 1.5 stars. I reserve 1 star for the places that actively seek out to harm you. The food is bland, overcooked, and soul-less. I'm kind of surprised at the good reviews here. Oh, the portions are massive, so if you really don't care about quality and want to eat as much poorly cooked carbs + cheese + oily tomato sauce as possible, you might like this. Ambience / Decor - The place is super dark, and super loud...I found myself yelling often to communicate with people across the table. Bizarre. Food Taste - Man. I'm pretty confident that store-bought frozen food by Mama Mia's is better than this. We ordered (A) Baked Ziti (B) Eggplant Parm (C) Ravioli. We were told the Eggplant Parm is FABULOUS....just wow. It's a soggy, old piece of boiled eggplant with wet breading and slimy texture. Really? Food Portion - HUGE!!!! The only thing worse than bad food made with bad ingredients, is a LOT of bad food made with bad ingredients. Service - Meh. Servers were polite, and food came out suspiciously fast. Have very fond memories of La Scala but hadn't eaten there in years. Was seated promptly and was greeted warmly by the server with water and a basket of fresh delicious bread. The butter tabs came right from the fridge and needed to thaw before using. I ordered chicken piccata that comes with choice of pastas or salad. I requested salad with house dressing. The salad came out almost immediately but it was clearly premade and came out too cold and was dressed with a mostly tasteless watery creamy Italian with so much liquid, it pooled in the bottom of the bowl. The piccata came shortly after and as I had already had the salad side I received a generous portion of chicken only. It was tasty but floating in too much lemon, butter and oil. I passed on dessert. The sever was pleasant and did a nice job but the salad and butter were too cold, salad dressing too watery and not very tasty and they served the chicken in a sea of sauce. It had been years since I've eaten there and I see no reason to return. read more

This is an ok restaurant - not bad, but not great. We went on a Friday night and it was mobbed - which we hoped meant that it was a good place. After an hour wait we were seated and ordered drinks - and asked for water. The drinks came fast the water took forever. We ordered 2 lasgnas, chicken parm, eggplant parm and their seafood medley over linguine. The food came in a normal timeframe, at least all but the seafood medley. It seems they forgot to place that order - but assured me it would be there in 6 minutes. This was a big red flag for me. The chicken parm was good (not great), the eggplant parm was (I was told) good - but BOTH of the lasgnas were cold in the middle - not lukewarm, not cool - but cold! They took the plates and came back 4 minutes later (suspicious. We even asked how it was heated up so fast and if they used a microwave). The plates were steaming but it was still lukewarm in the middle. The seafood medley came out after the 2nd try at the lasgna and it was ok. There was a good portion of seafood although they were overcooked and rubbery Also of note - the tables are very close to each other and it is loud, not a little loud so that it makes talking to each other a little difficult, but very loud so as a table of 6 the people at the ends of the table could not hear each other - the rest of us had to almost yell. Overall, we won't be going back. There are much better options. PROS: reasonably prices, large portions CONS: LOUD, suspicious cooking methods, average to below average food NOTE: As other people noted - they only take cash so remember to bring enough. They also have an ATM there. We didn't know this policy and luckily had enough cash with us. read more

I held a private surprise party last Wednesday night at La Scala! Everything went smoothly and the staff was on board with it being a surprise. I went in early to set up, again to drop off a cake, and again with the birthday girl. There were no issues and the set up and surprise worked out well! The restaurant itself is nice, spacious, and has a lovely atmosphere. Plenty of dining space, bar and table space as well. Bar has high top seating which is great too! Anyways, I used the private room (which they do not charge for) and they had the tables set hours early, so I could do my decor. Water and bread for everyone was also on the tables before the guests arrived. They offered extra tables and chairs for gifts, cake, etc.. We were a group of about thirty, so we had two waitresses, I believe their names were Jodi & Michelle. Anyways, they had both worked their for quite some time, and it showed! They were awesome. No one had to wait for a drink, the food came out quickly, especially for the amount of people, and everything was great. Between all the appetizers and the dinners, not one thing was sent back, and they could accommodate our gluten free people as well! They were super friendly, personable, and professional. Anytime I needed them, they were either in the room with us or right around the corner preparing something on the computers. It was great to not have to worry about my guests having bad service! Also, Cash only, however they advise you that, and there is an ATM in the restaurant! Therefore, shouldn't be an issue for anyone. The ATM works quickly and is easy! Food came out in good portions, with great flavor, and not too pricey either! There is a lot of surrounding parking to the restaurant, so there is definitely space. Overall we had a great time! I've been having some serious problems with the quality and consistency here. Since my first review I've eaten at the restaurant once and have had take out numerous times and each time I'm becoming less and less interested in coming here. And tonight's take-out order from here has compelled me to write this review. My partner's Fettucini starting coming to us so dry, hardly without any alfredo sauce, and once it was inedible. He even tried to add cream and butter, but it didn't help. He finally resorted to asking them to add a little more cream. A couple of times it was like a cream soup, though today it was like a fettucini alfredo should be. Several times the Linguine w/ Garlic and Olive Oil has come back with completely raw garlic (and if you've been here, you know they COVER their linguine in garlic). Sometimes there was almost no garlic to found. Tonight is what really set me off; the top of both orders of linguine was covered is COMPLETELY BURNT GARLIC and the portion was a quarter of what they usually serve! I took FIVE bited of the pasta and was done. It tasted digusting and I sat through my meal thinking about how disappointed I was. How pissed off I was. How sad I was. My partner and his family have been coming here since it was a small shop, more than 10yrs, his father has stopped eating here long ago because of the inconsistency and I'm just about to follow his lead. It's too bad because I really liked this place and they've done right by me for a long time. I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt and try it out again. read more

Not good. Runny! The chicken margarita was rubbery, drenched in runny butter/grease/lemon. Cheese was dry. The pasta sauce was so watery it wouldn't even stay on the ravioli. A ravioli would be covered in sauce, pick it up with your fork and almost nothing would be on it. So watery. The salad was just iceberg, onions, tomato and literally 1 (one) olive, with again, watery runny, flavorless dressing. Also had the rack of lamb which was ok but nothing special. So disappointing. The "meh" description with the two stars is accurate as to my feelins of this place. The parking lot is small, but there is a side street that I parked on (and didnt get a ticket), so I assume it's okay to park there. Inside it is very "old italian" dimly lit, dark woods, white table cloths, etc. Tables seem to be crammed in there so if the place was busy it may be crowded. Service was ok, our waitress was borderline rude, but I think thats just part of her "sass". For food I got the Tomato, Mozzarella, Basil salad. It was decent, tomatoes are not currently in season, so that isnt their fault. The cheese was the little tiny balls, and it was a balsamic and oil mixture on top. I would have prefered a drizzle of high quality balsamic instead, but that is just my opinion. There was much more oil than balsamic to be had. For my entree I got the veal parmagian, and my friend got the chicken picatta. We both got pasta on the side. When the food came he got linguini with red sauce smothered on it, instead of the garlic butter sauce. When he pointed it out to the waitress she snidely said that he should have specified that he didnt want red sauce. He asked if he could have the garlic/butter linguine instead. We had to flag her down and remind her over and over. 25 minutes later the pasta came out. Cold. We were both done our meal at that point. He asked to have the pasta boxed up with the rest of the meal. The food was good, was it mindblowing? No. Would I go back? Probably, but now I know what to expect. read more

The food was... Meh. The service was atrocious. I asked for a simple, two-ingredient drink. Belvedere, up, twist of lime. I got my Belvedere with a squeeze. This happens all the time. And since I'm good for two or three of these, I powered through the first one. She asked me if I'd like another, so I said, Please. But may I have a twist this time instead of a squeeze?" Blank stare. Scurry off. She returned with a cloudy martini. Quoth the server, "She squeezed about four or five lines in there to make sure there was enough." It was my turn to stare blankly. I asked her to return with a martini with a twist. She returned with a brandy snifter of warm vodka with a wine glass full of lime wedges. I stuttered, "But that's not even cold!" She said the bartender had no clue what I wanted. I pointed to the first drink (which was still on the table, and said, "That, with no garnish. Cold vodka in a glass." First off, the salad only consulted if iceberg lettuce, onion and greenbeens....horrible btw. The lasagna had a teaspoon of sauce, no meat and was very bland. The bartenders name was....wait she never told me her name.... wasn't very friendly at all. Never filled my drink and didnt have the nerve to ask me if my food was ok, but wanted to know if I wanted desert, lol! I've been eating at La Scala both dining in and Take Out for many years and I can honestly say the food is really good however over the past few times I've ordered from Lascala for takeout if I ordered anything with (Red Sauce) there is not enough to cover the pasta or Veal Parm etc etc. . I got hip to asking for extra sauce when I ordered again (not minding paying for it) the Sauce is very skimpy... Totally different than dining in the restaurant! I don't get this. .. The food is awesome but they don't correct the skimpy sauce problem... This is the only issue I've got with La Scala, the staff is awesome and friendly. .. I highly recommend checking them out and if you do order takeout check the order before leaving the restaraunt so it can get corrected then and there. . read more

Found myself down at the ass end of Why-The-Fuck-Am-I-Here-ville last weekend, and stopped into an old haunt for an early dinner. I used to work here, back in the day, (1996) and I remembered that it was a great, old-skool Eye-talian place run by some great old-skool eye-talians who knew how to cook. They haven't forgotten. This place would probably get lost in the city, since it's one of several other Italian places that really knock it out of the park, like Olive Garden and Papa Gino's, but down here in Randolph, La Scala is the proverbial punchbowl floating in a swimming pool full of turds. If your travels bring you to this unfortunate town, at least you'll know that even with no Olive Garden nearby, you can get a great veal scallopine. read more
