Yet again, Groupon has uncovered a surprising gem in the form of La Siesta. Venturing to Winthrop under threat of impending storm, we made our way to Winthrop Center and were momentarily met with great disappointment. From the outside, it didn't look like the restaurant was open. We approached the front door with apprehension, as the posted hours did not include lunch, but were quickly greeted by two friendly staff members. The second staffer, who turned out to be our waitress, seated us in an almost-deserted dining room with all of the attendant Mexican styling, including abundant applications of brightly-colored tile. After delivering chips and salsa, the waitress departed to provide us time to review the modest, though not overwhelming, menu. In the intervening moments, Jeremy K and I both selected the same entree, Enchiladas Mole Poblano, and opted for the guacamole-dip appetizer as well. We eagerly set into the chips and salsa as well, both noting the later's superb flavor. The guacamole dip, which arrived just as we finished the complementary starter, was served in an iceberg-lettuce-lined tortilla bowl surrounded by the precise number of tortilla chips needed to finish the dip. The dip was extremely satisfying, the onion, tomato, and cilantro blending well with the avocado. In mere minutes, we devoured all of the dip and chips, leaving behind the tortilla bowl in hope of saving some room for the enchiladas. Following a brief interlude that allowed for a bit of digestion, our generously-sized enchilada entrees arrived. Served with sides of rice and refried beans, the pair of enchiladas were drenched in an excellent mole sauce and a touch of melted cheese. The flavors comprising this dish melded perfectly and made for an extremely satisfying meal, one that I devoured with the same excitement I'd attacked the guacamole dip with. Throughout the first visit, our waitress returned with appropriate frequency, never intruding but providing the reassuring sense that service is a high priority at La Siesta. We easily redeemed our Groupon and were on our way, the staff's genuine gratefulness for our visit following us out the door. Just over a week later, we returned to redeem a second Groupon. We were greeted by the same friendly staff, the consistency a positive sign. We opted for the queso fundido appetizer this time, and while tasty and satisfying, I preferred the guacamole dip; perhaps it was the heaviness of this dish that made it an inappropriate midday snack. That said, the queso fundido is excellent in its own right. For my main course, I selected the Chicken Poblano, which featured grilled chicken, mushrooms, onions, and tomatoes in a poblano cream sauce. Again, the flavors were excellent, the poblanos providing an appropriate amount of heat for this dish. The rich cream sauce was superbly flavored, making this dish extremely satisfying. The generous portion, this time too much to finish after the chips, salsa, and queso appetizer, made for an excellent snack later that evening. As was the case during our first visit, the staff was equally as friendly and attentive the second time around. All in all, La Siesta is an exceptional restaurant nestled in Winthrop Center, one to which I would return regularly if only it were closer to home. read more

If you have any food standards I would not attempt to eat here. Granted, my husband is Mexican so our standards are higher, but this is the worst "Mexican food" I have ever had. The enchiladas were complete mush and topped with mozzarella cheese (bizarre...at least use cheddar or jack if you don't have queso fresco). The rice and beans were terrible, and even though I was promised there would be "lots of veggies" inside my veggie enchiladas all I got was a ton of spinach. Reading some other reviews I thought this was going to be a marginal place, but wow I was so wrong. Lovely, lovely atmosphere in a row of shops. Nice feel and comfortable setting. Impeccable service, and even got to meet the owner who gave us his personal recommendations. Margaritas, awesome. My favorite was the pomegranate. Mole sauce was amazing, so chocolatey. Highly recommend the enchiladas. Also for an app the queso fundido was very good. The coconut margarita was practically a dessert, but spouse also got the flan which was delicious. It's very clear that this restaurant uses quality ingredients. The salsa is freshly made with crunchy onions and vibrant cilantro. The vegetable quesadilla is made with well-seasoned mushrooms, onions, peppers, and tomatoes. The chips that come with the salsa are seasoned with a tasty red spice(not sure what it is). I was craving traditional tacos tonight, but always have trouble finding ones that satisfy that craving, especially being vegan. I have been to La Siesta a few times, but this is the first time that I have seen a vegan menu for them! I was pleasantly surprised. It my decision of where to order from that much easier! I love to support local restaurants that go out of their way to put vegan friendly meals on their menu. When I called for my to go order the restaurant was having trouble with their phones, but the hostess was so sweet and apologized for that as soon as I walked in the door. The food was still warm when I got it home and honestly some of the best tacos I have had in a long time! I will definitely be going back soon to try their other vegan options! I'd come to la siesta for 2 reasons -- margaritas and savory comfort food! The margaritas are ice cold and go down super smooth, that's how you know they're good!! Their chips and salsa are sooooo good. I'm convinced the salsa is made fresh in house, but they're sooooo stingy with it! They'll give you more if you ask but you'll immediately notice how little hey start you off with. We had the steak picadillo ranchero and chicken poblano. The steak wasn't too tough or oily like many Mexican places. They were decent cuts and the sauce it comes with is delicious. Paired perfectly with the guacamole and warm tortillas. The chicken poblano comes in a creamy sauce with tomatoes and rice. Imagine risotto but with super tender pieces of chicken -- yum! The ceviche though had to be the worst I've ever had. It had tiny shrimps that tasted pre cooked. It's also in a tomato based sauce instead of lime or lemon juice. It was simply tasteless unfortunately. I've eaten here five times over the course of 7 years. It's located in a little mini-mall strip that also houses a Chinese restaurant and laundromat. While the food is mediocre, it's right around the place from house and it's the only Mexican joint in town. I also walk by this place often when I take my dog out. On one of these excursions I noticed that in the back where there is a little road/back alley that they had a 3-tier serving cart. Perhaps they were using it for outside service due to Covid-19 but over the next month I noticed it just sat there and was being degraded by the elements. I decided to call them and see if what they were doing with it and if they wanted to sell it. I called on Thursday very early afternoon and spoke to a pleasant young lady who said she would pass the information on to the owner and they would give me a call back if they were getting rid of it. On Saturday as I hadn't heard anything I decided to give them a call. Big mistake. I called and asked if I could speak with the manager. They transferred me and the woman who gets on the phone starts off with a big sigh and asks if she can help me. I explained. She says "you seem frustrated that no one has called you back" and I'm immediately thinking "I do, maybe because I'm walking the dog and kind of out of breath" but I state "No I'm not frustrated at all". She says "well you called on Thursday night and now you're calling on Saturday night". Now I'm thinking well it was early afternoon the first time and I just walked by your restaurant and there's maybe 5 people in there tops" but I said "yeah i did call Thursday. I'm sorry but is this a bad time for you" and she says "You seem awfully rude" (Note: I am not making any of this up!) then says she will give the note to her "husband". And hangs up. Ten minutes later she calls back and says "You need to check your voice mail. My husband left you a message two days ago (um, no I had no messages) and says "You've got the wrong restaurant". I ask her who it belongs to and she says sarcastically "Well the big sign above says Hong Kong Dragon" and I state "Not in the alley it doesn't. There is no sign". Immediately she again states "You are terribly rude" and hangs up on me! This woman should not be in customer service. She is passive aggressive with every sentence and displays a frustration with people and life that go well beyond what a mentally healthy person would display. How a simple phone call about a cart got her so upset is beyond me but I was courteous the entire time and even offered to call back another time. She seems to enjoy being sarcastic and tried to bring out the worse in people (again, passive aggressive). So that, combined with the food that is mediocre means that me and my family will not be back. read more

What better way to prepare for an upcoming 'Snowpocalipse' than to fill myself up with some tasty, comforting Mexican food after a nice little drive to Winthrop. We drove past block after block of residences and finally, at the turn of a corner, the place appeared to us and we parked. We were slightly hesitant about walking in, it looked very dim, almost like it was closed - It was 2PM after all but we proceeded to walk in and found a charming, casual Mexican restaurant inside and were excited to head there for our late lunch, armed with a Groupon in our hands. After sitting down in the nearly completely empty dining room, we were given menus and ordered our drinks. They have some margaritas, a decent selection of beers and various other staples like Jaritos and sodas. The menu is pretty standard and isn't totally authentic but will satisfy the general population. After a good look, we ordered the guacamole dip to share as a starter and then I decided to get their Enchiladas de Mole Poblano for my entrée. While we waited for the food to come out of the kitchen, our drinks arrived along with some chips and salsa. Their salsa was great! Not spicy but it tasted absolutely amazing, and shortly after our guacamole order arrived, served in a tortilla shell and with some homemade tortilla chips. I found the shell to be unnecessary as we already had the chips which were fried but it all tasted pretty awesome. I did however notice that the guacamole had some pieces of shredded iceberg lettuce in it which I thought was weird - it still tasted great and the lettuce did provide some interesting texture contrast but it was very unexpected. Then arrived the enchiladas, which came with a side of refried beans and some rice. They were stuffed with some shredded chicken and topped off with some delicious mole sauce. My partner in crime ordered the same thing and we both happily dug right in. As I had expected from previous Yelp reviews I had seen, the meal was fantastic and the mole sauce was well balanced, with a good balance between the chocolate, the spices and the other ingredients in it. The portions were on the generous side as well and although we were famished walking into the place, we had trouble finishing and eventually left a bit of food on our plate, which was shameful considering how good the meal was. The service was right on par and wasn't intrusive but was attentive nonetheless. The prices were also great, considering that with my soda, my partner's beer, the guacamole and our two enchiladas orders, our bill didn't pass $33. The Groupon redemption was also very easy and I wouldn't hesitate to go there more often although it isn't exactly close by any means. No more BYOB since they now have a full out bar. (And an actual bar you can sit at!) GREAT Mexican food, which was unexpected in the middle of Winthrop! Their chips and salsa are SO good... so good, my roommate and I requested two fill ups. Their guac is chunky and delicious. Roommate got the fish tacs, which he loved, and I got the tres tacos - half of which is wrapped up and in my fridge to be consumed tomorrow!! SO good. I love that their tortillas taste homemade. And big enough portions where I couldn't finish my meal! Usually unheard of (but at the same time - also probably due to the 2 baskets of chips and salsa we polished off!). It's just super good, down home Mexican food. La Siesta has become a mainstay in our restaurant rotation, and after my dinner there on Sunday night, I feel like I must update my review. I've been trying to jump start my labor, and it's been said that spicy food can help that. Sunday night, I started having some mild contractions and figured I'd try the spicy food route again to see if it would have any effect. So we went to La Siesta, and I ordered my normal veggie burrito sans beans, but I asked for it to be made extra spicy. The waiter was like, "Well, how spicy?" And I told him I'm trying to have this baby stat, and I'd like it as spicy as possible. And he said, "Spicy like jalapenos, or spicy like habaneros?" And I told him to give me the habaneros. Well this burrito was no joke. It was freaking spicy. And awesome. And it made me sweat. I must have downed four pints of iced tea and water (and some extra sour cream) before I was done with it, but sure enough, I finished the whole thing. And the contractions started. At midnight that night, I went to the birth center in labor, where I stayed for the next 12 hours. But then, unfortunately, my labor stopped progressing and I had to be sent home to wait for more progress to be made. And nothing has happened since then. Sigh. But I will tell you that if nothing has happened by tomorrow, I will be going back to La Siesta and ordering another one of those burritos with habaneros. It's nice that this place isn't afraid to make their dishes extra spicy when their diners request it. Such is a rare quality in a restaurant these days! P.S. Rude owners and waiter, I or my family and friends that accompanied us here the last time we visited will never come back here again! The owner and a waiter made us feel very uncomfortable when they told me no to let my child spill his apple juice just like the last time we were there!! I was so uncomfortable after the owner made this comment I did not know what to say... some time later the waiter came back with the same comment.... during our meal we didn't want to ask for more napkins since we felt very uncomfortable.... as we were leaving after I put my child down from his high chair he ran around the table and got on a chair and started to scream. I walked over to where he was and I notice the owner (wife was approaching) I continued to put my son on the floor and telling him that we were at a restaurant that we did not scream in restaurants. As I turned around the owner (wife) was standing one foot away from me and she proceeded to tell me that I needed to keep my child quiet...my response to her was that what she needed to do was to not tell me how to take are of my son...she continued with her rudeness making comments which I am sure every one in the restaurant heard...this was a very embarrassing situation and very uncomfortable for all of us and many people that were dinning on that day...I will never come back here .... I am in the restaurant hospitality industry where adults spill drinks, kids get loud and we would never, specially the owners would never talk or treat guest in the way we were treated ... read more

As many of you know, La Siesta has indeed expanded. The hubster and I go once a week, usually mid week (to break it up and lift our spirits a little) and enjoy the Ultimate Margarita which is delicious. I usually go with the tres tacos. They come with a chicken, steak and an al pastor taco. But I've been going all al pastor lately because it's just so damn tasty!!! He usually goes for one of the specials. The past couple of weeks we have been served by Vivian who is very sweet and attentive. And we usually get a table side visit from Martin who is the owner, also very sweet. This place lives up to the hype. I actually came here for a baby shower and didn't even look at the reviews until after. It was one of the best Mexican meals I have ever had. I eat here often. I eat here so often the waiter knows my order. That is the number one thing I like about this place - the staff. Amazingly friendly and accommodating especially to people like me with food allergies. Prices are fair and portions are huge. Food is fresh and made to order. They also have great specials and a pretty large menu to choose from. Saturday nights they have two guitar players strumming around while you eat - Oscar and Caesar - who are also amazingly friendly as well. Charming Winthrop's La Siesta has quickly moved to the rank of my favorite Mexican restaurant in the Boston Metro area. Located on Winthrop Square, their mix of authentic Mexican entrees with the more familiar TexMex fare is spot on. I love the Tres Tacos, a trio of soft corn tortillas filled respectively with grilled chicken, carne asada and al pastor (marinated pork), served with beans and rice. My dining partner in crime loves their enchiladas, but strayed on our last visit to sample the Chile Verde Burrito, a whopper of a burrito filled with roast pork in a green chile sauce and topped with MORE of the chile verde sauce. Scrummy! Chile heads rejoice! La Siesta has a house made habanero sauce that is sure to please those of us looking for a serious kick in the mouth with our meal. The restaurant is super clean and cute and service is always attentive and courteous. Prices are extremely reasonable....if we lived closer.... we would be eating here much more often. read more

For being in Winthrop, I thought this place was pretty good. I'm trying to explore more of Winthrop since it's pretty close to where I live now (Suffolk Downs area) and exploring yelp, I found this spot. After reading the reviews, I told my boyfriend we should give this place a try. As others have said, from the outside the place doesn't look like much, but once you go inside, it's warm and expansive. I went on a Saturday afternoon and it wasn't busy, we didn't have to wait to be seated. The chips and salsa we were served were delicious, the chips came out nice and warm, which I love because cold chips at a restaurant are just plain awful. Our waitress was attentive and always came by to check on us to see if we were enjoying the food/needed anything. I ordered the carnitas and I believe my boyfriend ordered the chimichangas. My plate was ok, I don't think I'll order it again, not because of anything wrong but not my cup of tea. The boyfriend enjoyed his plate. For dessert, we ordered the fried ice cream. I've never had one before so I don't know what I was expecting but I didn't really like it. I imagined it to be warmer than it was, our waitress said she would go heat it up when I initially ordered it, but it was cold and not really flavorful. Friday night Mexican dinner. La Siesta was a good alternative to the Eastie Mexican joints. I didn't even know it was in Winthrop, thanks to yelp. We made a reservation and were seated right on time. They recently expanded the restaurant. We didn't sit in the new side but the old one which has a lot less space cause of the kitchen. The newer side looked very nice though, even had a small bar near the front window. Warm chips were brought over with salsa. That was a nice touch, we ended up eating that and skipping an appetizer. The menu had some basic stuff like tacos and quesadillas, then some house specials. I saw the fish tacos and knew that's was what I wanted. My bf got the steak fajitas, which were highly recommended by our server. For drinks we got a sangria and a margarita. The sangria was very sweet, the margarita was all syrup and came without the salt, we actually sent it back, then another was brought over. Frankly, it was not much better. We thought it would be more authentic. The food arrived very fast. My fish tacos were good. The sauce on top especially was tasty. The fish was chopped finely. I kind of would of preferred it in bigger chunks or strips but it was still tasty. On the side was some seasoned rice that wasn't bad. My bf's fajitas arrived in a sizzling skillet. I thought the portion of beef could of been larger. It was heavy on the peppers and onions. There were only 3 small tortillas, a couple more would of been better. Towards the end the owner came over and asked how things were. I appreciated that. There was also a strong family presence throughout the restaurant and kitchen. My quest/obsession to find good Mexican food in the Boston region has led me here to La Siesta. I've had a number of people tell me this is the ultimate in Boston's Mexican dining scene. Let's start with the name. La Siesta. It's not inspiring confidence. I feel a bit like it's going to be a fleabag motel, but ultimately, it doesn't affect the quality of the food, so let's move on. The interior? This is more like it. The best Mexican restaurants I've ever eaten in all share this ridiculous tacky aesthetic that is one part Mexico, one part 1970, and fifteen parts neon paint. Yeah, it's definitely not pretty to look at, but then, in my experience, the best never is. They're too busy making your eyes roll back in your head in ectasy to notice the fact that there is a mural painted entirely in day-glo colors. This place, if look are any indication, will be amazing. The food (a.k.a. the main event) was, if i'm being brutally honest, good, but uneven. The chips and salsa were pretty delicious. We also ordered the queso fundido as an app. It was cheesy, but kind of an odd texture. It had a meat flavor, but no real meat texture. It was ok, but forgettable. For the main course, I ordered the Mole Enchiladas at the recommendation of the server. Admittedly, I'm not a huge fan of mole sauces because I find them too sweet/chocolately for a savory entree. This mole was different in that it had almost no chocolate flavor but was overwhelmingly flavored with cinnamon. It was good, not great. My boyfriend had a steak dish (I can't recall the name) and it was delicious. 10X better than what I had and by far the best Mexican dish I've tasted since moving here. For dessert, the four of us shared an order of the fried ice cream. It was quite good, but not really "authentic." Thank you Yelp! for that free dessert with the check-in! I am a huge fan of Mexican food and try to find the latest and greatest whenever I travel so I was very excited to hear about La Siesta in Winthrop! We stopped in here on a Sunday night, after traveling back from the holidays via the Mass. Pike and wanted to celebrate surviving the post-Christmas traffic rush. We were greeted at the door by a friendly staff member and were promptly seated. The atmsophere was neat (very authentic) as they had tiled tabletops and chairs with a "distressed" look to them. Our waiter was very nice and attentive. The Manager (I think), came over during dinner to check on us as well. The chips and salsa were FABULOUS! Salsa is the measuring stick of any good restaurant! There is a small bar to the left when you enter, very quaint! We were full after our meals (cue chips and salsa!), so we unfortunately did not have room to try the fried ice cream, as others have recommended. I've really come to enjoy eating here. The food is consistently good and over time, as I've tried more of the dishes, I can say I'm a fan. The enchiladas are really good and the mole sauce I wasn't so nuts about seems to have mellowed out, as now I think it's pretty tasty as opposed to too sweet. What I really enjoy are the refried beans. I know, I know...of all the things in the world to rave about I choose a requisite and overlooked side dish. But that's just it -- at most Mexican restaurants the beans resemble Alpo and don't taste much better. Their beans actually make me want another helping. They also make their own hot sauce. I dare you to ask for it. In fact, sometimes they actually have more than one kind and on even more special occasions, the owner himself will bring it to you as he describes with pride how it's made. Then he'll watch you as you turn red. Some like it hot as they say. All and all, it's worth a trip to Winthrop to eat here. It's the real deal. read more

This place was wonderful. My party of two was told that there would be a 20 minute wait which was understandable as it was a Friday night and we just wandered in. The owner came out after 10 minutes, said that we had already waited too long and ushered us into a table as quickly as possible. Talk about service! The food was delicious. The complimentary salsa was the best I've had in a very long time. I had the enchiladas which were nicely portioned. My friend had nachos which were quite good although she thought my enchiladas were much better. I would come again definitely if I was in the area. Always good whenever my boyfriend and I go here. We usually get take out and get a beef chimichanga and a side of beans and rice. We find the chimichanga big enough to get one and just split it. Sometimes I can't even eat the half, so personally, I think you get a good amount of food. The atmosphere is pleasant on the inside and the staff is always friendly. The La Siesta platter is also very good. I love cheese and love the fact the smother the nachos in cheese. This is one of the few places in Winthrop that you can go to that has a bar. A few of my friends and I go here to drink once in awhile. The prices are not bad and neither are the drinks. Not too strong or not too weak. The bar area has definitely improved since they expanded it. There is definitely a lot more space than before. The only reason why I rate this 4 stars is because one time we ordered nachos and our total was just under $10, it was like $9.60 something or what not. The hostess told me that there is a $10 minimum and that I would have to pay using cash, which I rarely have on me. And I'm not gonna buy a drink or an extra when I don't need or want it. She did eventually allow me to charge my card. I'm not sure if they put up a sign since then, but I think it's kinda silly. They get good business. And even some of the smallest convenience stores have only a $5 minimum or none at all while your fast food places don't really care. read more

I just love La Siesta. It's way cuter than you would think: beautiful lanterns, cozy wooden decor, and a great bar. The menu has plenty to choose from, making it hard to choose! I tried the Flautas, deep fried flour tortillas stuffed with shredded beef and topped with ranchero sauce and cheese. There was also rice and beans on the side. It was 2 meals for me! I also had a margarita, the Paloma which featured tequila and grapefruit soda. Quite refreshing! The churros are to die for: make sure to share, it's a big portion! By far my favorite place for Mexican food! The best night to go is Thursday night for their chicken special! I have yet to find anything wrong with this place.
