Amazing food of authentic mexican, we come here often and really happy with the quality of the service

I just went back today for the first time in a long time. Previously it was the same old tune, great food, the worlds WORST service and that nasty mop water smell. However, I went at the request of my daughter and the service was outstanding, the food came super fast, and although they were moping, it didn't have that disgusting smell from before. What changed? Well turns out it now has new ownership and a better attitude to match. So no longer are you greeted by an angry crabby old lady, but instead service from people who care you took the time to come in. How's the food. Now that's the tiny issue. My dish was better under the old owners. It's not bad at all, just different. I need to try more dishes before rendering final judgement. I wish them the best in their new venture and I'm sure it will awesome because it looks like they actually care. read more

This place is so horrible. Staff unfriendly they always get my order wrong whether it's a doordash order or dine in. I have given this place so many opportunities but this will be my last time giving them my business. Food is garbage. Service is worse than trash. We Saw it, We Yelp! The reviews were amazing the food in fact is great. The waitress we had was horrible, she bought our food. We waited 5 minutes for silverware she forgot to bring to us after bringing us our FOOD! So we're just sitting there being tease for delicious food, along with the food i ordered a side of queso & chips....she didn't bring the chips & forgot my flours tortillas for my entree long story short after waiting 10-15 minutes & my queso getting hard as clay i finally spoke up & was pissed. In the battle of North Austin non-trailer Mexican food, La Tapatia falls somewhere in the spectrum between straight up Tex-Mex-y places like Camino Real or Enchiladas Y Mas and the more authentic joints like Taco More. You can get your covered-with-cheese fix of the usual suspects of burritos and enchiladas, but they also offer the al pastor, lengua, and barbacoa/cow-face options, as well as what looks like very popular menudo. The Torta Cubana wasn't my favorite ever, but the amount of avocado was good. I think I just missed not having hot dog bits in it. Maybe I'm just weird. The namesake Burrito Tapatia was pretty good. I got mine with lengua (tongue). Oddly, the tongue they use in the burrito is shredded, offering almost a roast-beef sandwich kind of consistency, with great flavor. My dining partners ordered the lengua in taco form, which came sliced in a way that you could not mistake what it was. Some didn't seem a fan of that. The burrito was filled with lettuce and tomatoes as well, so if that's not your thing, you may want to ask for it without. Drinks include the usual combinations of Jarritos and Mexican Coke bottles, and a larger variety of Mexican beers than I was expecting, including Negra Modelo, Carta Modelo, etc., in addition to Coors light and the rest. But those are all dead to me when you have the little fountain dispenser thing of horchata. Their horchata is a little more subtle than some places, but I've never been a huge fan when it's too nutmeg/cinnamonny, so I like it here. The large is like 30 cents more than the medium, so just get the huge vat of it for like two bucks. Ample parking next to a Starbucks, quick access from 183, many meal choices generally between $6-9, and no judgment when I ask for flour tortillas instead of corn. Oh, and don't wait on your ticket. Just pay at the counter when you're done eating (giving your table number, seen taped on the table surface). 3.65 stars. read more

I feel an update is derserved and necessary while my tummy is still swimming in happiness and I have, what I feel, is some good insight to share: Here's the dealy-o with this place: this is not a customer-service oritented restaurant. So don't come here expecting to get your well-timed, fully attentive service experience - Like what I usually demand in a restaurant. Why four stars then? I'm a firm believer in understanding what a place offers and reviewing it based on whether or not they're doing a good job of living up to that standard. The standard of this place is simple: Food that's true to their culture. It's what I get when I go home, it's what I know and understand to be good food. And when I see elderly Mexican people in here, who don't speak English, whose roots are clearly in Mexico and they're sitting at this little restuarant getting their menudo for breakfast, it just further confirms that this is the good stuff. If you don't like it, chances are your brain is thinking Tex-Mex, because based on your experience, that's what "mexican food" is - and that's fine, but it means you don't understand that this IS what it should be. Your survival guide to this place is to understand HOW to be their customer and thus get the best possible experience. So, yes: the waitress is going to come to your table, she's probably not going to smile, and there's not really a guarantee she'll come back before you're done. Order EVERYTHING you want at that time and if and when you want a refill, just know you're going to have to flag her down, even get up and go find her. It's just how it goes. Why bother eating here? Huge portions of, what I've experienced to be, good, true to the culture, food for a great price. Today, both plates I posted pictures of, cup of coffee and a cup of tea: $9.50 total. What I should have done was ask for cheese added to my plate (Huevos a la Mexicanan) and extra salsa. If you walk in understanding HOW to be a customer here, you'll be happy. If you walk in and expect to be treated to the corporate Tex-Mex experience, then you'll probably leave pissed. And yes, that slice of ham is on almost every breakfast plate - I didn't get that at first, but just shred it up and eat it, it's good. read more

It might not be fair I review this place, as I'm not a huge fan of Mexican food. Mexican tequila, yes. Mexican beer, yes. Mexican women, a dangerous yes. But when it comes down to Mexican fare, I'm seldom in the mood, and I usually eschew Tex-Mex in favor of more of a Baja-style. But anyway, la Tapatia is a favorite of my church brethren, so I get one of their breakfast tacos almost every Sunday, and it's often the go-to place for impromptu lunch gatherings with some of the flock. such was the case yesterday. As I was leaving the service, intent on a corned beef and cabbage, or at least a potato--something Irish--two of the church brothers asked me to go with them to La Tapatia. What the heck--I was starving, and La Tap is in the Golden Radius, so I went along. The place is busy (visually, I mean; cluttered) and a bit dark. There's a dinginess to it, that at a glance, I'd give it a "B" on the cleanliness scale. The service is also hit-or-miss. I've have good service, and neglectful service there in times past. Yesterday's was actually OK--the waitress was kinda prompt, and kinda attentive. I ordered a combo plate of barbacoa and lengua, and one of those yummy "Hecho en Mexico" Cokes. The meat was great, the beans and rice unremarkable, flour tortillas kinda scorched. my little snag came when I went to pay. I promised my readers I'd stop bitching about costs, but I only noticed this after I left. Combo plate $5.99. When I went to pay, it was $10+ change. I paid and tipped without thinking twice. Then I realized--did I just drink a $4 coke? OK, serenity now... I'm hovering between a 3 and a 4. I'll give it a 3 1/2, but I'll show 4, since I do like this place. I will eat their breakfast tacos (which are BOMB!!!) on most Sundays, and I will return again, so a little Shoehead Love for this little Mexican joint. Arrrrrriba! read more

Eating here for years and all the other times I've had no problem quick turn around and great service however I was eating there last Sunday and the service was horrible took almost an hour to get my food and there was only five people in the restaurant and then I saw the cook take frozen enchiladas out of the freezer to warm them up and I thought I was getting food that was made from scratch. This place was highly recommended to me by some friends. Decided to try it for breakfast and wasn't impressed. I had the green chilaquiles with fried eggs. The green salsa they use is made with tomatillo, which I love, but it should be used in moderation. It can bee to sour. My fiance ordered the red chilaquiles which were tastier. Today, we went for lunch and I tried the flautas. Found it a little odd that the only other option besides chicken was "picadillo." I had never heard of that. But I tried them and they were pretty good. The staff is friendly and the food comes out pretty quick. When you are all done, go up and pay at the counter. They dont bring your tab to you. I think I like that better because I dont have to wait around. I simply checkout and head out! read more

I don't think there is any where else in town where you can get 3 decent sized breakfast tacos for 2.25. They serve breakfast plates as well and they look generous with beans and tortillas and everything else. I went to the location at 1431 for Valentine's day and I was the only customer there and I didn't mind. I think everyone chose the fancy places. Their tostados are huge and thier pork tacos are really, really tasty. After 3pm they have all beers for 2.25! Why get a miller lite when you can get a Bohemia!? read more

My boyfriend is staying in the area for work. In the mornings he visits this place to get breakfast tacos. (my boo is getting so fat) They have a special 3 for 3.95 I believe. Okay, so I decided to go taste these delicious tacos that's making my man so fat. I order chorizo, egg and cheese. Can you say delicious!!! The service was great and the ladies working were very nice. The only thing is they put all 3 tacos in one piece of foil. Its not a big deal, but I kinda wish they were individually wrapped. It came with this green creamy sauce and a picante sauce. The tacos were delicious.. I only ate 2 of the 3, so don't order too many because they are filling. This used to be one of our favorite spots, being from south Texas these kinds of restaurants remind me of home. However, the past few times we've been it's definitely been a miss. From the food, to the prices, (excluding the service because staff is always friendly) I just don't see us frequenting this place like we used too. We went last week and had 2 lemonades and 2 orders of mini tacos and it was $37 before tip. The meat on the tacos had 0 flavor, nothing. It almost tasted boiled, and was a little Grayish in color. In the state of Texas you can buy beer at 10am on Sundays to go with your menudo. I was in the hopes of going there and have 1 beer with my menudo, when they said we can't until 11am. I wasn't going to stay there for an hour and wait. So we went to a different restaurant where we got what we wanted and it's 10:18 right now. This review is strictly on breakfast tacos. It's hard to find a place that sells the three breakfast taco special that's under 3 bucks. It's great too. They have a lot of choices to choose from so go ahead and mix and match. Being spoiled by the breakfast taco places in San Antonio and almost finding a similar match in Houston. I've found the one in Austin. The service gets to you as quick as they can and business is always moving in and out of there. It's nothing fancy but it's what you want when you crave some breakfast tacos. read more

No bueno. Seriously. There is no excuse for such sloppy Mexican food in the ATX. Much of the food is bland, with at least one "stale" experience already logged on my three-strikes you're out board. The one edible dish is the flauta plate, which is also the one selection they offer that outdoes the cheaper and tastier Taco Cabana that shares the same plaza with this place. Taco Cabana aside, just blocks away is Jardin Corona, which puts breakfast tacos at either place to shame at a slight increase in price. Don't make the mistake of stopping here. cheap and pretty decent. I had barbacoa tacos and they were ok. Not nearly as good as Torchy's, but then again 1/2 the price. My girlfriend, got a mean pate and she thought it was great. I used to come here all the time for lunch but quit going because some of the items were super greasy ( aka tasty) and mad me so tired after lunch. I decided to try this place again since its close to home and I had to stop by Sherwin Williams which is right next door. The service was fast and friendly. It's not a fun experience when you go in for the three-tacos deal and then they charge you an extra $2.50. Being talked over as if I didn't understand Spanish was really bad. I pointed to the actual sign, they still charged me more. It was offensive. The tacos were sort of average Mexican fare. Too oily and too salty. Bad food is one thing. Overcharging is another. We have been by this place many, many times. Looks like an old fast food restaurant with a drive thru. Based on a positive review from a friend who had a good bowl of menudo, my wife and I decided to give it a try.. It will be the last time Dark inside, very spartan, with old tables and booths. It was seat yourself so we chose a booth upfront by the front door. The floor was the concrete slab stained and unpolished. No ambient music. There were only two other parties there which should have tipped us off. Wife ordered menudo which is why we came in. The menudo was acceptable (she gave it a 5 out of 10), but way too salty and tripe was in big pieces and would have to be cut with a knife. Into the to go cup it went. I ordered an appetizer of bean and cheese nachos with jalapenos and onions on the side and a main plate of beef enchiladas, taco, tostada, rice and beans. The food was almost uneatable. Nachos were served cold on a cold plate with stale chips, Canned cold queso poured sparcely over them with dabbs of refried beans in some spots. No jalapenos or onions and a dollop of sour cream and guacamole on the side. Cold order of nachos. Had to ask for the jalapenos and onions The enchilada plate was tasteless with unseasoned ground beef wrapped in wilted corn tortillas with little or no cheese. There was a small uncrispy taco with a uncrispy tostada with rice and beans...What a mess. Nothing was spicy, not even the waitress. I simply asked for a to go box (boxes). Oh, the iced tea was ok..Had to ask for sweet and low as it was not on the table. We reluctantly paid for this unrecognizable mexican meal as we want the staff to get paid. Very good (and huge) breakfast tacos. Can't talk about anything else--that's all we had, to fuel up for a road trip. They don't skimp on the eggs, chorizo, or other ingredients. The tacos were made fresh, which is great, but you might want to keep that in mind if you are in a hurry--they do take longer that way. read more

It's no secret to those who know me that "La Tap" is my favorite spot to stop by for unreal breakfast tacos. I think one of these could feed an entire family, but I never fail to scarf down two on a good day. It has survived its location in a doomed strip mall for one major reason: the food is fantastic. Everything I've had is authentic, well seasoned, and comes in generous portions. Food is very reasonably priced and comes out quickly - just the way I like it. Added perk? After the epic fail of last year we finally returned because the menudo is really good even though the service is horrible. The menudo was amazing. My fiancé's nachos were a little plain so when he asked for some guacamole and sour cream they came back with basically a whole 12 ounce tub dumped onto a plate. This review is not for the quality of the food, but for the quality of service. Service their is typically ineffective. But I recently had an experience of a lost item. I left something at the restaurant and did not notice until later in the day. I called to ensure it was indeed still there and that no one took off with it... and no one could help me. The reason why is absolutely ridiculous: because no one there could speak English. During normal business hours, they had no one who could properly speak English. After the lady who answered the phone told me as much, I realized just how bad/lazy this place is. Completely unprofessional running of a business. read more

The food was alright, definitely don't know what the hype is about from the other comments. The salsa with the chips was actually pretty good though. The lemonade was horrible. Super acidic so I stuck with water. It was actually a lot more expensive than we thought it was going to be. Apparently it's a $1 extra to have 2 different types of meat for the street tacos. Service not so much..... so I ordered the gorditas plate and had a burrito brought out to me and after rejecting the burrito twice they finally came out with the right plate but it was presented in an awful manner as the server seemed annoyed with me as she pushed the plate in front of me,gave me an ugly look and walked off. Not even a sorry about the mix up or anything. No where was I in the wrong..... I should not have left a tip at all but I did leave them 2 bucks and I DEEPLY regret it. The breakfast tacos are amazing, 3 for like $4, and they are huge....they make a green hot sauce on par with the Taco Deli dona. What's funny, is the coffee bean and tea leaf next store sells taco deli tacos half the size for like 4.50 each. One of the best items here - just get a pound of the barbecue, comes with a dozen tortillas, onions and cilantro. Bring it home and add all your little fixings, will feed an entire family. read more
