This place was awesome and the waiter was always ready to take care of us. Very authentic Mexican food with good atmosphere. They even have some cheap tacos for about 2$. I also liked all the salsa's they had here, we had at least 3 with some being hotter than others. The chips weren't all that special but the salsa was nice with the rest of the food. Me and my family liked it here.

Molcajete at Taqueria Chalapa. So yummy!

Wow! can't believe I just found this wonderful restaurant! Saw the place a few weeks ago while picking up my dry cleaning, and popped in to check it out. The menu seemed very different from the typical Austin Mexican restaurant, so definitely something I wanted to try. We came in today and were blown away by the delicious food. I had the "Molcajete," a delightful mixture of incredibly savory beef, chicken, shrimp cactus slices and grilled onion served in a traditional molcajete bowl. Freshly made tortillas set the dish off to perfection. My partner ordered the Parillada, another mixed meat dish that was also very delicious. Ambiance: This isn't formal dining -- think mom/pop cafe where you won't be embarrassed to lick your fingers, a good thing because you're gonna want to! Service is prompt and attentive. Our server didn't speak English, but we communicated the critical information easily enough. Taqueria Chalapa is the newest addition to my list of go-to restaurants.

Finally found authentic style Mexican food!!! We had the Al pastor and asada taco plate. Classic tacos with onions and cilantro served with rice and beans. The hot sauces also had good flavor. The overall atmosphere isn't impressive, very traditional style Mexican hole in the wall. Server didn't speak English but I was still easy to communicate with.

    Pastor tacos

The Lord knows, I love me, my Pastor tacos! Looking to satisfy my Pastor taco craving, I never would have dreamed that a lil ol' taco shop , connected to a Texaco gas station would do me right! This cool, hidden gem, has all the right Jalisco eats at a very LOW price. The chips and salsa (red and green) are served fresh, and didn't disappoint. It's your typical mexican taqueria style salsas that go woth just about everything and anything. I ordered 3 pastor tacos, on flour tortillas, with cilantro and onion. I also ordered a side of refried beans, with a Dos Equis and lime to wash it all down. The pastor in the tacos , were well seasoned, and very moist. (it is very easy to dry this meat out, especially because pork is dry to begin with) The tortillas were not homemade, but tasted store fresh; the onion and cilantro were very fresh. The beans were just as good as my grandmother used to make. Bacon drippings, and lard, really make the flavor of homemade, mexican style frijoles. The beer? Well, how could you screw that up?! Try ordering in spanglish, because that's what I did. I must have come in at the time the engilish speaking server was on break. No biggie though... The best part is that the whole Jalisco experience only cost my just over 10 bucks! CHEAP!!!! Next time I think I want to try one of their house specialty, Michelada beer specials and a Cocktail de Camaron, and maybe another pastor taco or 3!

We just ordered from Doordash and it was so good! We got pozole, menudo and tacos. Everything was packaged nicely and it was super tasty! Will be ordering again in the future.

    The Nachos with fajita meat
    Courtney B.

I visited this establishment with another person on 1/21/2019 (it is now reopened). We ordered the Nachos with beef fajita meat and the Camelia. When we entered the establishment we seated ourselves. After we were seated, we were promptly greeted by a waitress. After taking our beverage order, the waitress brought chips and salsa to the table. The chips were not fresh however the salsa was. The salsa was made with fresh onions, cilantro and spices. This salsa is some of the freshest I've tasted. The food was at the table approximately 12 minutes after it was ordered. The nachos were as expected. The Camelia was topped with lots of canned cheese which is a shame because the meat (the chicken, steak, and shrimp) were all grilled perfectly. Some of the steak on the Camelia had tough gristle on it which made it inedible. The beans came with the Camelia were flavorful and hot. I will return to this establishment perhaps to try something else not with canned cheese.

Our server couldn't have been more friendly and outgoing. She was swamped (it was prom night with lots of formally clad students dining in) but never broke a sweat, never made us feel rushed or unattended and had a big smile from ear to ear throughout. I can't remember her name but I believe she is one of the owners daughters - and she's a real asset to the restaurant. My husband had a combination platter with all the favorites - enchiladas, taco, and a tamale, which he thoroughly enjoyed. I opted for something that was a little less---well, you know----but when in Rome---don't eat the spinach and mushrooms----get the tacos, savor the enchiladas. They know what they're doing and next visit I will lean into their expertise, enhanced by another Mexican martini. Buen provecho!

It's a little overpriced for what it is but it gets the job done. FAST FACTS: * Parking - lot out from of the building with plenty of spots * Happy Hour - couldn't find updated days and hours but they do have HH specials * Lunch specials from 11 am to 4 pm Monday through Friday SERVICE - We arrived around 6:30 pm on a Monday and they weren't busy at all (although it was Cinco de Mayo and they got busier as the night went on). We were seated right away and had complimentary chips and salsa brought to the table immediately (they're very mediocre). Our server, Fatima, made sure we had refills throughout the meal and the food came out quickly. PRICING - The total was $65.45 after tax ($4.99) but before tip for a Burros queso ($10.49), shredded chicken quesadilla ($14.99), Javier's plate ($17.49), and carne asada ($17.49). For basic Tex Mex, it seemed a little overpriced but the portion sizes are good. BURROS QUESO (6/10) - This is a basic chili con queso... it's topped with ground beef, guacamole, and pico but not much. I don't think I'd order this again because it isn't worth it for the price... I'd rather just order a small chili con queso. SHREDDED CHICKEN QUESADILLA (6/10) - It's a pretty standard chicken quesadilla served with shredded lettuce, pico, sour cream, and guacamole. You do get plenty of shredded chicken inside! This is great to split as an appetizer or get as an entree. I'd order this again. JAVIER'S PLATE (6/10) - It's a good portion size but nothing special. The grilled skirt steak had a nice flavor but is kinda hard to cut up and eat. You get rice, beans, and a small tortilla cup with lettuce, pico, and guacamole. I probably wouldn't order this again because I'd rather try other things. CARNE ASADA (6/10) - Again, it's a good portion size but nothing special. The grilled chicken breast is the same price as the diced skirt steak which doesn't quite make sense to me but you get a decent amount of sautéed onion, tomatoes, serano peppers, mushrooms, and zucchini. Again, you get rice, beans, and a small tortilla cup with lettuce, pico, and guacamole. I'd order this again if I want to get in some veggies with my meal. This was my first visit to Burros Tex Mex Bar and Grill and I probably won't rush to come back because there are other Tex Mex restaurants nearby that I prefer. It wasn't bad by any means, it just doesn't stand out (especially for the price). But, in a pinch, I'd stop by again if I was nearby and in the mood for Tex Mex.

I looked at the menu and it was very Texmex, so much so that I didn't feel any guilt whatsoever in ordering hard shell tacos. Since we already got the chips we decided to get their queso as well. The food basically all arrived at the same time and the queso was served in a small soup cup-TONs of their queso and since it was family, double dipping the queso into the salsa was not judged; pretty decent. My tacos were good-the lettuce, tomatoes and cheese were just kind of tossed on top and not in but I guess that's what I get for ordering hard shell tacos.
