I *really* wanted to like this place. It is located a five minute drive from my work and I love mexican food. I discovered it one day and was looking forward to trying it out. The menu items were very authentic and I can appreciate that they offer breakfast as well as shrimp dishes. I liked that most of the menu items had photos. I placed an order for the shrimp a la diabla to go by phone with Alan confirming there was no dairy in the dish itself, due to a dairy *allergy*. He affirmed there was none in the sauce. When I arrived to pick up my order, I was completeluy disappointed that my order was covered in shredded cheese. It was very frustrating considering the short time, but I re-explained my allergy and had the kitchen prepare a new dish. While I was waiting, I asked Alan for a couple more salsa containers to be able to try one of each from the salsa bar and he wanted to charge me .50c each container after they messed up my order. I was beyond frustrated that I was not able to fully enjoy my meal before rushing into work. The shrimp a la diabla, to its credit, was some of the best I had tasted in the area and had a decent amount. It was such a let down of an experience for me to ever go back. I love traditional, Mexican food. The ingredients are made so fresh. I had to have a quesadilla with slice to be otherwise known as the "quesadilla de asada" Cheers, fresh vegetable vegetables, and grilled onions. Mix the pizza made this a wonderful breakfast. But I really did the trick because I ordered the large orange juice thinking 12 or 16 ounces. I think I got the 24 ounces lol this thing is literally a trashcan size of orange juice and it's delicious. I love the open area seating in the television you're playing de Fresh coming out. High quality and tasty. This is an authentic Mexican restaurant. I have enjoyed their Al Pastor, Carnitas, and Carne Asada burritos. Every time I have been pleased with the quality and spice. It is true they only offer two salsa cups, but you can refill the cups if you need more. I find I do refill one cup with mild salsa, but only need one fill of their spicy salsa. I'm a fan of their food. I think about it as my week progresses. When am I going to try it next? I've only had their burritos so far, but the other menu items I see on tables look really tasty. This is everything I want out of a hole-in-the-wall Mexican restaurant. The staff is welcoming and helpful and the food is amazing by my taste. My go-to is either the super burritos or the super nachos, both served as larger than average sizes! This place is literally a hidden gem. I am always skeptical on trying menudo or pozole at new Mexican locations, but decided to give this place a try (didn't want to wait an hour for the other restaurant I was planning on going to to open). I went around 9am with my wife (yes they are open that early on weekends. The food was amazing. Hands down, best pozole I've had in awhile and the menudo was also delicious. My wife and I tried each others food. She also ordered the juevos rancheros and I had the chorizo with papas burrito. Every single good item was amazingly good. You won't be disappointed eating here. Unfortunately the food is lacking flavor all around. The Spanish rice is plain, completely unflavored, just orange. The cheese enchiladas I ordered were immensely sweet! and my breakfast burritos were stuffed with burnt and charred bits of papas and bacon. Overall missing authentic flavor. I really enjoy the food at all the La Tapatia locations. This location has poor customer service. The woman behind the counter is the rudest person ever. I have gone here for years. I'm friendly and always say hello, but her responses are always short and rude. God forbid they make a mistake on your order, and you mention it to her because she will roll her eyes and make you feel like you just stole her last dollar. Also Don't ask for salsa in your burrito because she will tell you that there is salsa for you to get while you are there from the salsa bar, but then when you ask for cups for salsa, she only gives you two cups because that's all you need per burrito according to the burrito master. I slept on this place for a long time because they used to be cash only. Went in there one day on a whim when I actually had cash (because Corrales and Las Delicias de Abuelitas were closed), and not only did I learn that they take credit card, but that I've been missing out on the best chorizo breakfast burrito I've had in a long time. Sure, the ambiance isn't much and the little plaza seems sketchy, but come on - just get it to go. Very reasonable prices, really good burritos, the spicy avocado salsa is great. They were also very nice and FAST. No more waiting around 20-30 minutes for a burrito like you will at Corrales. Been eating this stuff for over a year and you really need to order the carne asada torta with Avocado. This is a real hole in the wall and doesn't look like much from the outside, but the portions are really worth it. Went with my mother and she tried the ceviche tostada wich she really enjoyed. The tostada was really packed with tons of fish and very citrusy, so I highly recommend the tostada and the carne asada torta (which I've had for years) (with avocado). They also have their own sauce on the salsa bar (mild on the far left and habanero on the far right side. Ignore the prostitution near the motel but if you got the cash it's all you, but for 12 bucks you get a big fat juicy carne asada torta, packed ceviche toastada and extra large horchata drink with chips. They even have a 42" TV on the inside and have a fridge with beers by the bottle. Another thing that looked real popular (every table had one ordered) was the mexican shrimp cocktail, will definitely try this next time! Good food, big portions and really good horchata for a real decent price. read more

This place is a real unsung gem! The Mojarra Frita is outstanding. I have also enjoyed the bacon breakfast burrito, which is served piping hot. The salsas are good as is the pico de gallo. When I get there to pick up my burrito and I get to work I see it has eggs and potatoes in it. I don't want eggs and potatoes in it! So when I call them back to tell them they tell me to come in for a refund. I didn't even want a refund I just wanted another burrito but instead the owner asked me not to come there anymore. I can't believe this shit, instead of thanking me for continuing to patronize his business for years even after a lot of my orders are WRONG he comes up with this crap. It's not my fault you guys fix my food wrong. I helped grow this business! Sent many many family members and coworkers there over the years. This place is one of The Best Mexican Restaurants in Ventura, CA!! I have literally been coming here since they opened and I knew the original owners from Santa Barbara, CA...called La Tapatia on Milpas Street. Marcos and his lovely wife are just Amazing as are there staff and familia....it is a neighborhood Mexican restaurant serving Breakfast, Lunch, & Dinner. The clientele is a mix of Mexicans and Gringos who know their Mexican food. Most importantly the food is Marvelous!! The Super Wet Burritos are Amazing and Marcos is the best cook ever. I love their little place in the hood and only live 5 blocks from there and it never disappoints me. Their Carnitas is outstanding and Marcos will make it crispier if you request that. The Al Pastor is WOW!! I love their tacos and they are twice the size filled to the brim with meat and get it "todo" with everything on it. The Sopas, Tostados (try the Ceviche one...very good), Chili Rellenos, and some of the Best Chicken Mole I have ever tasted is amazing. People rave about their shrimp cocktail too, but I have yet to try it. They have a salsa bar which has guacamole sauce and SPICY GUACAMOLE SAUCE with ground little tiny pieces of Habanero Chili's in it and it does not disappoint at all. Last time I was there Marcos had finally added a Habanero Salsa to the bar in addition to a Red & Green Salsa's. They also have carrots, jalapenos, and lemon. Marcos PLEASE keep the Habanero Salsa flowing...it was great for the people who like their salsa Caliente. Marcos ... my one complaint is PLEASE ADD THE CRUNCHY POTATO Tacos back on the menu ....they were the BEST EVER and us Gringo's LOVE THEM....PLEASE!! They usually have a good World Football(soccer) match on or a Mexican Novela on the TV. To all you Gringo posers out there TRY THIS PLACE...the food blows away the competition....no offense, but Corralles and Yolanda's just don't do it for me. This is Traditional Mexican Food and you will not be disappointed. I would say the best time to go is for Lunch, when everyone is at the top of their game. La Tapatia's burrito has ruined me for all other burritos. I had the Chile Relleno burrito -- and what a combo! So cheesy, a nice level of heat, the smokey flavor of the pepper, the soft squishy enfolding tortilla (not too thick!) and (because of all the people recommending a "wet" burrito) a layer of cheese and tomato sauce on top. SO. GOOD. Especially drizzled with the avocado salsa -- just amazing. This is the kind of hole-in-the-wall Mexican spot that I always look for when we are travelling, but this place sets a new high watermark. It's not a place I would necessarily sit and linger -- it's just a bunch of bare tables, no ambiance -- but as a place to get AMAZING food, it's a winner! read more

Recently went there and it seems as if food has changed. Used to have best burritos, Chilaquiles had too much sour salsa in them and I probably won't be going back.
