I rarely leave negative reviews, but this experience genuinely warrants one. We ordered five pizzas well in advance for our final evening on the island. When we arrived at the agreed pickup time, the restaurant had somehow lost the order entirely. Rather than acknowledging the mistake and working toward a solution, the staff immediately made it feel as though we were somehow responsible for their error. The manager offered no meaningful solution, no accommodation, and no apparent sense of urgency despite the obvious impact. On an island where dining options are extremely limited, losing a large pre-ordered meal isn't a minor inconvenience--it effectively ruined our last dinner. What was particularly disappointing was the interaction itself. The person at the front desk, who appeared to be the same individual involved throughout the conversation, was dismissive rather than helpful. A simple apology, ownership of the mistake, or any reasonable attempt to make things right would have gone a long way. Instead, we were left feeling inconvenienced by their mistake. Everyone makes errors. What defines a business is how it responds when those errors occur. In this case, there was no accountability, no flexibility, and no customer service to speak of. I can't comment on the food because we never got the opportunity to eat it. Based on the experience alone, I wouldn't feel comfortable relying on this restaurant for any order, especially one that matters. read more

Called ahead and placed a take out order (which I highly recommend as wait times can be super long-we overheard hostess tell a party that it would be about 90 min wait to be seated). We ordered mushroom pizza, cheese pizza, and garlic bread. The garlic bread was 5/5 with strong flavor and delicious! The pizzas themselves were just ok however-good crust but the rest was nothing great or bad. We tried to order calamari but was told that they only offer that for dine in? Also they don't have red pepper flakes or parmesan cheese packets, which was disappointing. Definitely worth checking out if in the area and wanting pizza. read more

Cute decor but staff doesn't seem thrilled that you're there. The food wasn't very good, especially considering the price. One in our party ordered Alfredo pasta with chicken. When you do that they will not cut chicken or put in on pasta so you're prepping your food at a packed table. I ordered chicken parm and they said I could pick my sauce. I wanted standard chicken parm but Alfredo on the pasta. To do that they added $5 and again brought everything separated out. Chicken on one plate, dry pasta on another, and a boat of the thinnest, most flavorless Alfredo sauce ever. Honestly Olive Garden has better Alfredo. This tasted nothing like Parmesan or cream. It tasted like milk with shaker parm in it. Awful. The sauces are all really watery, pasta and chicken were over cooked. Just kind of a weird experience. People seem to like the pizza so maybe we went wrong not just ordering pizza. It was a no for me. Definitely drive up the road to Wild Olive and get an amazing Italian meal with wonderful service for the same price point. Maybe an off night but we won't be back to find out. A delicious and very popular spot! They will have a line out the door 10 minutes before they open on any night of the week. So get there early because it is worth it. I did get ID'd by two different people because they didn't understand my license, so that was a little odd, but besides that it was great. You can never go wrong with ordering a pizza. read more

We absolutely love La Tela! We have been coming here every time we visit and stay on Kiawah, and we will continue to come back. This place is always packed. They do not take reservations so you definitely need to plan to arrive early when they open (or plan to wait!). And I'm not kidding when I say you either need to arrive early and plan to wait in line before they open or plan to wait 45 min to 2 hours! The space inside is small and a bit crammed so keep that in mind. I hear they do a pretty large volume of take-out orders so that may be worth trying as well. Luckily if you do miss the mark and end up having to wait a bit for a table, there is plenty of shopping and things to do around Freshfields while you wait. Everything is made homemade from scratch from their bread to their pizzas to pastas. The homemade bread they bring out to the table to start is so delicious! Nice and fluffy and hot. We like to dip it in olive oil with some salt, pepper, parmesan, and red pepper flakes. Yum! We love their basil pizza and most recently just tried their fig pizza which was amazing! Such a nice blend of sweet and salty. All of their salads are tasty. My dad and brother have also had the meatball grinder which they loved. Whether you are staying in Kiawah or Seabrook or live in the area, La Tela Pizzeria is a must try spot for pizzas and pasta! read more

Despite the mixed reviews, we had a five-star experience at La Tela! We were staying on Seabrook Island for a week, and although there are several other dining options in Freshfields Village, the quality is not always what it could be. Some friends recommended La Tela, saying that it's one of their must-orders whenever they're in the area, so we gave it a try! If you're trying to call ahead to place a takeout order ... don't. We tried to get through on their phone line several times, and just assumed they were closed because we couldn't get through. We drove up to check things out in-person and the restaurant was packed, so we placed a to-go order at the counter! The very friendly cashier told us it would be about an hour, so we did some grocery shopping at Harris Teeter and then actually went back to our vacation rental for a bit before coming back to pick everything up. There's also plenty of cute stores nearby, if you'd prefer to hang around Freshfields! Our food was hot, fresh, and ready right on time. We ordered two pizzas, a Caesar salad, some garlic bread, and two orders of their meatballs. This was a good amount of food for four people, and we actually ended up having leftovers. The meatballs were my favorite bite of the entire meal ... followed closely by their unique and saucy garlic bread. Of course it's a little bit expensive ... but it is Freshfields after all. Go in knowing what you're getting yourself into, and pack yourself a little snack before you order, just in case. Remember you're on vacation time! La Tela is totally worth the wait. read more

Does NOT have a gluten free pizza crust. After waiting for a table for an hour and a half that was disappointing to find out. Some reviews said there was gluten free crust but they no longer have it. Ordered takeout pizza waited an hour and 45 minutes. The pizza was very good but the crust edge was burnt blackened and inedible.

So 6 years later i was in the area again and decided to give it another try. Wife had the meatball grinder (huge) and I had the cheese pizza. My sister was with us and had some fancy pizza. All was very good and what an improvement. We eat here most every fall when at Kiawah Island. Their wood-fired pizzas are awesome! Wife is gluten free and loves their eggplant Parmesan. We were waiting at 5:00 when they opened, along with about 20 others. Service was great. I had Ricotta Cavatelli with Sausage Ragu and it's one of the best pasta dishes I've ever eaten. Also had a meatball w/ marinara, this was tasty and incredibly tender, melts in your mouth. Love the open kitchen and nice bar. We'll be back here again. read more

We absolutely love La Tela. It is a small restaurant with no reservations, and they are always, always busy. We've been here a handful of times throughout the years and always look forward to getting dinner here. Everything is made from scratch, from their pizzas to pastas, everything is worth a try. The quail egg pizza is my absolute favorite, but their other pizzas are just outstanding as well on their homemade pizza crusts. They bring you bread to start; we got the fried mozzerela, surprised to find it was a little colder on the inside, but we enjoyed it for what it was (cheesy mozzerela balls). The calamari is also very good! Their pasta sauce is great as their appetizer dipping sauce and for the pastas they serve. Chicken parm is one of their popular dishes, rightfully so, and the eggplant parm just melts in your mouth. This is a local Italian restaurant that is close to Kiawah Island. Before arriving, I saw the reviews for this place and didn't really consider it. We decided to come here for dinner because it was so close, and I am so glad we did. I'm not sure why there are so many low reviews, but don't let that tell you not to come. They have a large menu with all kinds of options. The pastas are homemade and so delicious! It was a ton of food, and really hit the spot in carb-loading for the marathon. I am trying to find a calm way to write this review. I am sure the food was probably pretty good. I'm sure the ambiance was fine- we were outside and got a few bug bites, but that's not the fault of the restaurant. We were really disappointed in the service. My wife ordered a virgin strawberry lemonade- she is pregnant and my three year old wanted to try some too. They brought out an alcoholic drink instead without telling us. My son and wife drank some- thankfully she recognized the issue. Initially the staff said it wasn't alcoholic, but to their credit checked and then admitted their mistake. While I was on the phone with poison control, the manager came out and apologized, and told my wife that it wasn't the most alcoholic drink on the menu. Poison control recommended monitoring him and giving him plenty of food and water. We stayed and made sure he was fed. Poison control was great- they even called after an hour to check on my pregnant wife and son (son is fine). But there is no way that the $80+ meal was worth the worry over my family. read more

Point off for the continual frustration of trying to get your food.They need to limit the number of orders they accept. The take-out and dine-in experiences are completely different. For take-out during busy season, be prepared for them to tell you it's a two-hour wait, and then for them to tell you it's not ready when you get there after the two hours. Regardless, the food is great. My favorite pizza ever is the Quail Egg (which is also available for dinner though the menu doesn't reflect this). Their crust is nice and chewy. We ordered two pizzas that had to be amongst the worst I've ever tasted. Neither one had one drop of any kind of sauce. Mushroom pizza had mushrooms, a tiny amount of goat cheese and arugula. That's it. The best part was the arugula because that can't be messed up. The other pizza was the ricotta one and it was equally bad. The crust was very tough and chewy on both. The menu says they are Neapolitan pizzas. Is that a code-word for dry? Trader Joe's crispy flat bread pizzas are far superior for 1/4 the price. I am being fair with this review. La Tela used to be my favorite spot in Freshfields. I recently revisited La Tela for lunch. Service was incredibly slow--good thing I was not in a hurry to be anywhere. The fortunate aspect of the slow service was that their pizza was topped and cooked correctly. Oftentimes pizzas ordered during the evening rush have half the toppings and are burned black on the bottoms. Unfortunately, to-go orders have to be made in person and waited on in person. (They will not accept phone orders or online orders anymore.) You have to drive to La Tela, place your order in person, and go occupy yourself for 1-2 hours till your food is ready. read more

Stopped by this restaurant while perusing the shops in Fresh Fields and was very happy! This place had a cute atmosphere, GREAT service, and amazing food. Our server was quick to welcome us and walked us through the wine and food menu. She suggested the meatball appetizer and it did not disappoint. The sauce alone deserved 5 stars. For a party of 2 she suggested the 10 inch pizza. We went with the Fig, which was a good balance of sweet and salty. Had the pleasure of enjoying two meals here while staying at the Andell Inn. One night we had a great pizza and after seeing the pasta dishes when I picked up the pizza decide we had to come back for lunch. I had the angel hair pasta with marinara and my girlfriend had the ravioli. Both dishes tasted great and the ravioli was amazing!
