I was quite pleased with the authenticity of this restaurant. Beginning with the meal, I had the cocktail shrimp, which was a bit different than what I am used to. First of, the sauce itself was rather sweet, but for spice, it had tiny bits of jalapeno pepper which kind of exploded in my mouth. I kind of had to eat around the peppers after that. I very much enjoy La Tolteca. There are many tables so it is easy to get a seat even on a busy Friday or Saturday night (and it gets busy). The service is also fast and efficient. I'm a vegetarian and they have a nice little section of the menu for me to choose from. So we (my boyfriend and I) have had Veggie al Trio, Veggie de la casa, Veggie enchildas, and Chile Poblanos. All have been good satisfying meals. I'm not sure what "authentic mexican" tastes like but it is similar to the many different Mexican restaurants I have eaten at. For those non-vegetarians there are numerous options for you to chose from. I really can't think of a reason not to go. O wait, I did think of a reason, one time we went there and there was a band going from table to table singing. We were horrified, then happy, when the service was so fast that we made it out of there right before they were to come to our table (talk about luck). For my couple of initial visits to this restaurants, I kinda liked their food but my last 4 times there hadn't been good at all , did not find the food either tasty or fresh for that matter. My husband and I went together with some of our out of town friends and I felt really embarrassed for suggesting this place. But for me the time when I decided to write this review was when they simple ignored our complaint of their stale and STINKING food. Our server told us, that since it is late and they are about to close ,she cannot do anything and the chef who made our food is already gone. Went here on a whim this past weekend for lunch takeout while shopping in DE. The place has slightly tacky decor, although nowhere near as bad as La Hacienda or Cancun in Bucks County, PA. It is very clean as well, and the staff are very nice. We ordered the chicken taco salad bowl, and the burrito de carnitas. They were both excellent, and were perfectly seasoned. I could eat the carnitas all day. The homemade tortilla chips were good too, the salsa, while tasty, was a little on the salty side. I recommend you try this place if you are in the area. read more

The most boring Mexican food I've ever had. Had to search for the bits of chicken in my luke warm entree and then wondered if it was chicken. I think they forgot to put the tequila in the dreadful limeade margarita. The waiter was a miserable man who delivered 3 of our meals and let the fourth person wait 15 minutes only to receive her meal cold. La Tolteca is a local chain of Mexican restaurants. This one is really close to my house, so I've been a couple of times. Personally, I disagree with a number of reviewers who think that it is overly Americanized. I feel that the food here is fairly authentic Mexican cuisine. It's tempting to order off their dinner/lunch special menus. The names there are things you are familiar with (taco, burrito, fajita) but it's not where their best food lies. Take a look in the other sections of the menus and read the descriptions, I promise you'll find something you like and the prices aren't significantly higher than the specials. On our most recent trip, I ordered the Pechuga Borracha. Chick breast stuffed with poblanos, onion, corn, cheese with a spicy borracha salsa. It also came with grilled veggies (mushroom, onion, pepeprs), beans, rice, avocado and a couple of flour tortillas. It was delicious and an enormous amount of food. I ate about half and was absolutely stuffed. The borracha is not overly spicy, but it has a nice subtle heat. The chicken may have been a little dry, but the combination of the stuffings and the sauce more than made up for it. My husband had chimmichungas off of the dinner special menu and he enjoyed them, but didn't think they were spectacular. Service was good, and we got out for two entrees and two drinks for about $35 including tip. read more

I love the place. It's quick, tasty and a good price. I lived in San Diego for a while and of course the mexican food was un-real! Moving back to delaware was a disappointment. There is a hugh gap in the world of mexican food here. But La Tolteca will do. The staff is always been friendly and quick. My only problem is that every time my wife and I go we seem to always get the kids section. Lots of crying babies. But there is nothing that the restaurant can do about that. I have been going to La Tolteca for years. I used to recommend it to all of my clients, NEVER again. To start off menu has changed with maybe 50% of "old" menu items on the new and items are more expensive. The meat in all of our meals taste as though it sat in a water bath all day, no seasoning but a tin/metal taste. Tacos were thrown on the plate, water melted the tortillas so everything was gooey and unmanageable. No amount of sauce could add flavor enough to make the meal edible. Every dish of the meal was generic. Server was disinterested and unavailable. Not enough place settings, had to fight for attention to get a straw for the lidded cup they provided for my 2y/o as well as to bring the other half of my meal that wasn't delivered. read more

We tried curbside to go for the first time in 2 years. Our service was terrible then and it's terrible now. I used the app to place our curbside pick up order at 7 pm. Email said pick up at 7:25. We got there a few minutes early and the food wasn't ready but we were ok with that. Well after waiting 25 more minutes in the car my husband tried calling and after being put on hold several times he was hung up on so he goes in. The guy says I'm sorry but we are slammed with take out orders, goes to the shelf and gets our order. We leave and get home to soggy cold food. We got the nachos, the tacos, and the beef enchilada. The Nachos were pretty good -- not the best I've ever had, but we were pretty satisfied with these. The Tacos were OK. Definitely not bad, but not really great. The enchilada was pretty terrible. The mole sauce tasted like chef Boyardee canned sauce and was super disappointing. La Tolteca has been one of our favorite Mexican restaurants for years. We've been here for quite a few meals ranging from a quick lunch to celebrating a birthday party. The food is always very good here. Today, we stopped in for the $5.99 daily lunch specials. I had a chicken burrito, beef taco, and rice. My wife had a chicken tamale, a chicken enchilada, and beans. The chicken was seasoned extremely well, and the rice was also. A couple of Dos Equis later, my meal was complete and I left a happy man.... I can't forget to mention how great the restaurant looks. I hadn't been here for a meal in awhile, so I didn't know that they had remodeled. Bright, vibrant colors... Very nice art work.. Even the lamp shades had a modern, but appropriate look for this restaurant. Bring your reading glasses is you're really interested in what's on the menu... It is a very large menu with some.great deals on it. But man... It is a lot to decipher. A can't fail place to eat if you love Mexican food though... The roaming mariachi band stopping to play and sing at your table is a nice touch also. read more

A late dinner out with friends, they sat us pretty quickly and the food came out fast. I had the combo platter with Chile rilleno and chicken tamale. The chile rilleno was amazing, the perfect combo of pepper and cheese with just the right amount of kick (I like things spicy and I would classify it as mild). I wish the tamale was just as enjoyable but the chicken was a little dry. Next time I would just get 2 tamales. My friends got the carnitas and ribs, and the meat for both was just so flavorful it melted in your mouth. As far as Mexican places go it wasn't that unique but it sure was good! Went for the first time at around 4:30pm. No waitress at the front (I guess because there was literally 3 couples spread about), then she was the one who made our drinks (geesh!). Food was okay, but I've never seen mushrooms and zucchini with fajitas (is that considered authentic mexican these days?). Couldn't eat it all, but upon getting home and attempting to nibble later, why did I find a rat dropping in the middle of two tortillas! Threw all of the remains OUT immediately. La Tolteca gets 3 stars! ambience, food, service and price. I ordered the nachos supreme; this has tender chicken, ground beef atop nachos, cheese sauce, lettuce and sour cream- hold the beans! My friend ordered the enchiladas and said they were delicious. The only negative is that you have to a limit on the number of drink refills and must pay if you want more salsa and chips. Poor service. Average food. Expensive beer. Liked the place on Fairfax much better, but service has gone down. Had a waitress that apparently didn't care what we wanted or needed. Didn't get a second beer until done with our food, and even then sat with empty plates in front of us. Quality of the food went down too. Smaller portions and less flavor. One in our party ordered no sour cream. Rather than remake the dish they scraped it off and covered it. And $15 for a pitcher of Miller Lite? I sent an email to owner about my experience and I still have not heard back from the establishment. It has been a day and a half since my dinner. I have to give it some rating as it wouldnt post with a zero star rating Came for dinner. I ordered the nachos supreme and I asked them to make it all chicken,no lettuce and add jalepenos. What I got was nachos with just chicken on it. The waiter took it away and apologized when he brought back another plate in a matter of seconds. It looks like they just dropped the rest of the ingredients on top of the already made dish. I have had nachos at other places even the other La Tolteca and usually it's great. This has been a disappointment at best. Going to have to remember to go to the La Tolteca near Talleyville. After eating some of the nachos supreme I was unable to be positive about this place. The nachos were mushy and the mound if sour cream did nothing to help. I ended up just eating most of the l pickled jalepenos that were on a side bowl. I could have had abetter Mexican meal at Taco Bell I haven't seen the waiter at our booth since he dropped of the food. He has been doing double duty as waiter and bartender. I asked to speak to the manager and he wasn't around I happened to pass by the location in Talleyville so is topped in there. I was taking to an employee about my experience when another customer chimed in and stated Oh,don't go there the service is horrible and the people don't want to be there. I got the email address to owner and I emailed him with my complaint. I also left him my name and phone number I have not heard anything as of yet and it is now Friday. I love the food here. Especially #225 from the dinner menu. Went here a couple of times with colleagues and friends, and they love the food here too. Went there on a weekend for drinks (margarita could be a little stronger though, tasted like lemon juice). Anyway, food is awesome. Will definitely recommend this place!! They have done a great job updating the space. We loved the pork belly dip and the enchiladas playaras. Don't visit unless you have nowhere else to go afterwards. Didn't have to wait for a table but the service was incredibly slow. We had to ask for our server after sitting ungreeted for ten minutes. In fact, I have time to write this review because we've been waiting for over 20 minutes to ask for our check. And we have two kids with us. Would be higher rating with better service. Was absolutely awful it too 30 for them just to get to us. Nobody assisted me while the workers and servers were walking past the seating place. Then when they assisted people they left us to last while other people that were last in line were helped first. We placed an online order about 45 minutes before showing up and when they assisted us it took 15 minutes more just to finish the food. There was also an elderly woman standing next to us for the 45 minutes while there and her food was ready the entire time and we had eyes on it but they did not check the name and she didn't get her food until we got ours which is not a a way to treat someone when it is your job to do it. read more
