We've been coming here for over 10 years! Many of the staff are still there and the food and service are consistently great. I can't eat dairy or onions and the staff are always happy to make the adjustments to orders. Chips are always fresh. Food is what you expect and want. Carnitas are outstanding. The fajitas are perfectly seasoned and I like that everything is chopped so it's bite sized. Oh and the frozen margaritas are like liquid gold. I always leave happy. read more

Don't waste your time here. We sat down and waited ten minutes before a server came up to us. When they did, we ordered a fajita burrito and a burrito bowl. The burrito bowl has barely any thing to it. The steak was shriveled and tasteless. The rice also had no flavor. The only thing giving it any sort of flavor was the half a spoonful of salsa. The burrito was the same- tasteless and full of mush. Don't recommend. Not sure how they have a banner saying best Mexican in DE. read more

After some chips, which were broken and seemed stale, and two margaritas, shared the carnitas fajitas. Fajita were very flavorful and a very large portion to share and in our case to take some home. Had lunch here with a colleague and it was just OK. She had a $7 cheese quesadilla and I had a $14 shrimp and pineapple salad. Both were fine but the service was really weird. I'm happy for the owners and their new location, but god do I miss the old place. The food had gone to s**t since moving up here to the big building. There's no flavor anymore, it might as well be Taco Bell "assembly" line food. I've traveled all over Mexico and fell in love with Carnitas (braised, then flash fried pork chunks). I've lived in Cali and Tex and know both adapted versions of the cuisine very well. I don't know wth happened here, but this will likely be the last time I eat here. The carnitas I ordered tonight, much like the last 3 trips up here (I travel for work) were more like pig fat soup. Sadly, bringing this to my waiter's attention (he's new), resulted in some half-ass "maybe they're busy" response. And since nobody else stopped by the table, there's obviously a deficiency with respect to their business culture here. MAJOR FAIL! What happened to this former Mexican restaurant gem? Today's visit was nothing short of a disaster. Terrible smell in the entryway, unfriendly greeting, poor service, badly timed delivery of food to our table, and ultimate the worst: mediocre tasting dishes. Started with a frozen margarita while we waited (15 mins on a Saturday night) for our table to be ready. It was delicious, though a little sweet for my taste. Complimentary chips and salsa for the table, that we supplemented with guacamole that everyone was happy with. I got the seafood enchiladas which came with a really yummy creamy sauce on top instead of the traditional enchilada sauce. It came with rice and a "salad" instead of the beans (the salad wasn't much of a salad, just toppings that I put on the enchiladas). read more

Don't waste your hard earned money. My family and I came here on a sunday. The place was pretty empty. It wasn't busy at all. But, the food took forrrreeeever to come out. when it did, it was god-awful. I ordered tortilla soup and carne asada steaks. Th soup was luke warm and very very salty. The steak was dry, had a weird soap like taste, and was waaaaayyy over cooked. Like gray and poor quality. Our server only brought over our bar drinks and then disappeared. We asked for water, she forgot. She never came back to check on how the food was or to even offer the check. She finally came, and we were relieved to get the hell outta there. The bartender was extremely sweet. They had a nice happy hour special. Kept drinking margaritas for 4 dollars. The pineapple fajita was AMAZING. The oysters were okay, they didn't have the mignonette sauce, so that kind of threw everything off for me. The place itself was beautiful. It's newly renovated. Worked across the street for years at old location - went down today to DuPont and saw they moved to new location. First impression - looks like a different colored version of old Chili's. Really - hardly any updates beside paint and bar tiles from Chili's. Food on lunch menu sucked! Shrimp fajitas for my daughter and shrimp quesadilla for myself. Tasteless. Boring. Even the ice tea sucked. Not what I remembered at ALL from previous visits. I was sadly disappointed. :( Guess I should have caught the drift when the parking lot was empty at NOON!!! read more

Not really authentic nor overly Americanized, La Tolteca is a good spot for a Mexican bite and margarita. Everything I had was tasty and the portions were big. I liked that the tricolor enchiladas basically gave me an enchilada sampler. It comes with two chicken and one cheese, but asked to sub spinach for one of the chicken enchiladas. It was definitely different from any other enchilada I've had before. There was a green tomatillo sauce, mole poblano sauce, and our traditional enchilada sauce; the sauces were standard but good. Same with the chips, salsa and guacamole. I went with the house margarita on the rocks. It was a nice size and was your standard margarita. It was a solid dining experience. read more

Been there many times. Like the food. Service not great and wait staff do not understand your questions. But the real problem is I am physically disabled and use a walker. This is the 2nd time the I had to struggle with the door while an employee was near. It's very hard to manage a walker and a heavy glass door and try not to trip over the floor mat. Bad manners bad business practice. My 9 and 12 yr old grandsons know to open a door for others. read more

If you want to sit around waiting for service while the waitress is texting on her phone, this is the place to go. And then the manager had the audacity to apologize. He walked by her several times allowing her to text and ignore the customers. Decided to give La Tolteca another try since they moved into the old Chili's space on Concord Pike. I've been to the old location and remember not being that impressed, but it's been years so I figured I'd give it another shot. we went in for lunch on Saturday - arrived around noon, so it wasn't very busy. we were both planning on ordering the lunch specials on the back page of the menu and as our waiter approached the table before we could even say anything he very rudely informed us "no lunch, only dinner, no lunch! He reminded me of the soup Nazi from Seinfeld. We looked at each other when he walked away, like what the heck was THAT all about? He seemed to have an attitude from the beginning. Hubby ordered tacos and I got Chicken Quesadilla. Nothing fancy, or difficult, but after 20 minutes we still didn't have our food and our waiter had disappeared. People who had come in after us were already eating! Finally about 25 minutes later, our waiter came over and said "Did you get your food?" UMMM - no, Do you see me eating it? Another 5 minutes and out it comes... 30 minutes for tacos and quesadilla! Anyway, my quesadilla was soggy and not hot. I ate the end piece which was a little cheese and nothing else, but when I got a bite of chicken in the second one, I immediately spit it out. The chicken tasted like it had started to go bad.. No chance I was taking another bite. Hubby said his taco meat was flavorless. no seasoning at all. He didn't finish his either. I guess it was the manager who came over and asked how everything was - I told her something was up with the chicken and she offered me something else, but no way was I doing that. This place is a joke when it comes to service honestly. The actual worst. And the most disappointing part is that the food is really good. We order take out from here all the time and have never been disappointed. However when it comes to dine in service it's nothing but a let down. I went here twice to dine in, and withheld my review the first time because i wanted to give it another chance, but I'm just over it now. I won't bore you with the details, but just know if you make a reservation they probably don't have it bc they didn't write it down. Very disappointed with last visit. I had a taco salad with black beans. My pate was swimming in the undrained juice from the beans. Ground beef was not seasoned. The hubby had the poblano bowl and it was tasteless and swimming in a watery juice. We will try one more time but if bad again we're done. read more

I'll start with ...it was about 1:30ish PM on a Tuesday. I choose this place based on past experience which were good. You generally expect the same consistancy. Ordered the tacos Salada - Al Pastor which was new item... this is three tacos. Waiter comes back sorry out of Al Pastor...hmmm ok. Ordered the steak instead... the wait was long....real long 30-40 minutes but was munching on chips and salsa u get. Ordered dip as well ...waited so long forgot we ordered it. Food final comes...3 tacos steak.... steak was cold as if someone made it in the morning and it was in a bin and placed into the tortilla...very basic very cold even though wrapped in aluminum to give it an appearance it might have been suppose to be served hot/warm/semi warm. But it was cold and came with a plate of refried beans which was hot. While I can understand kitchens get backed up, 40 ish minutes for a hot plate of refried beans and placing pieces of cold steak in a tortilla. 40 minutes for this...comon. maybe my expectations must be set lower. Maybe its suppost to be served cold. I'm no Mexican but I Mexican't understand why it took forever for cold food... Taste wise...very bland. Hot sauce made blandness spicy. If this was my first time, it would be my last. And it would be 2 stars. Mediocre is the kindest description I can give our experience here. This was our 2nd visit (I try not to give negative reviews after only 1 visit). First, my house margarita tasted so watered down I'm not sure there was any alcohol in it. Second, every burrito, taco, quesadilla and even fajita we have ordered in 2 trips has been bland and watery. The quac tasted less than fresh, the beef overcooked to the point of toughness. Prices are average, certainly no bargain. If you want cheap mexican dishes Taco Bell is a much better bet. Zero for two, we won't be back. read more

I've spent some time in Mexico, Texas, and California eating Mexican food and would like to know where this would be considered authentic? It's really another Americanized Texmex restaurant and as long as you go in expecting things like hard shell tacos and fajitas with only ground beef, chicken, and fish fillings you'll do OK. I could be wrong but I didn't see any pozole and moles on the menu much less lengua and al pastor fillings. It's in a strip mall so you may have to fight it out for parking on a busy night. read more

The food itself was slightly above average/good. Not authentic but had good flavor and is exactly what you would expect. The queso and salsa were both tasty. Had the Azteca burrito with steak and it was flavorful. The margarita was slightly below average. Just used a lot of mix. The service was slow! They were busy, but no reason why the food shouldn't come out for an hour. The server also didn't really check on us. Had to ask for chips for the queso twice. Had to pretty much ask for everything. Service that feels like you're stuck at your in-laws and they can't wait for you to leave? Food that's worse than being made from the frozen food section? A Margarita that came out warm, yet somehow on ice? Or maybe you'd like your waitress to take the cash split from a card payment as a tip, and return your ticket with the full bill charged like no cash ever existed. Then run away and hide like you just broke your grandmother's favorite dinner plate and she doesn't want to get blamed for it? Then this is the place to go! We came right after our shift ended from a hospital, tried to order our drinks and food in one shot, but kept getting cut off like our waitress didn't want us to order and we were bothering her from doing whatever it is she was doing. Finally after returning to the table for the 5th time she allowed us to order. We got our drinks, which mine seem to have come out of a frozen slushy machine, and my date's was on the rocks, yet somehow warm even being on ice. Food came out and we were both starving so I can't even remember if it tasted good since we scarfed it down, but the presentation was horrible. We get better plates from the mom and pop shops than these chain of restaurants. When it came time to pay, she plopped the ticket on the table like it was her telling us to pay and get out. I placed $10 I had in my pocket from a coworker returning the lunch money from a previous day and included my card for the remainder of our $40 tab. What was returned was a "thanks," her high-tailing it to the kitchen and never returning until after her coworker had told her I demanded to speak with the manager. What was left in the booklet was the receipt for my $40 payment on my card and the $10 missing. She chose to not use common sense and ask if it was split or a tip, and assumed it was her tip for her exceptionally horrible attitude as if we owed her the pleasure of giving them our business. The manager apologized profusely saying she must have been confused, which not only angered myself and my date, but made us laugh a bit too. So if you enjoy pina coladas and getting caught in the rain while your server steals money and time from you, this is the place for you! If not, there's a Five Guys right next door. I was extremely disappointed in the serve here. I've come here many times before and loved it. However, this time was terrible. The server rarely came to see our table. When we FINALLY got our food the shrimp in the tacos was undercooked. We let the server know and placed another order. After waiting 30 mins for the food to come I asked for the manager. He came out and wasn't helpful. Said the place was busy and the food should be out in 10 mins. We decided to cancel the meal, paid our bill, and left. I'll NEVER go back. read more

My husband &I have frequented La Tolteca when it was in Fairfax. We sometimes sat at the bar. Never had issues with being served, although they never had a dedicated bar tender. Since moving to their new location, we have had problems when we sat at the bar Last night we went in, & sat for at least 10. Minutes, before being waited on for drinks. . The staff member, that waited on us, obviously did not know what Sauvignon Blanc was. There were several staff member in the bar area, but no one was really paying any attention to us. It was very confusing. Finally got waited on for our food order. She did come over once to check on us , then disappeared for at least another 10 minutes. My husband waited to ask for aa condiment , then she disappeared again. It was several minutes after we finished. That we got our bill. No,pleasantries. They need to have their staff learn how to be a little more attentive & friendly. read more
