Today, I had one of those days. You know, those days when you just cannot take a break. Today I was stuck on campus until 10:40PM working on a group project. And of course I am cramming, because after all I am an engineering student, which means that I work better under pressure. Anyways, due to my late evening I was forced to get dinner at La Val's. I had the special with feta cheese instead of salami. It was a decent pie, but not anything spectacular. It definitely isn't anything to hike up the hill for. They do have a nice selection of beer on tap, but if you don't mind drinking in the ally, the Quickie Marts nearby have the same beers, plus some especially good ones, for much less. read more

The crust of the pizza is divine - a really tasty thin crust that's both crispy and doughy. The toppings seem fresh and they don't murder the vegetables on the pizzas. I enjoyed the mushroom and spinach slice. The pasta is good too, and the portions are generous. read more

This place is pretty ok for grabbing lunch near campus--the veggie sandwich is fine. Good place for getting an afternoon beer, too, and has large tvs if you want to catch the game. And a pool table! The tables are large, too, if you need to grade some papers while you eat. read more

One of my go-to places in Berkeley to catch a sports game. Big screens, ample seating, solid pizza (not the best, but good enough to satisfy a craving) and decently priced beer. Dec 11 rainy day in Berkeley, didn't want to order from Dominos but some local restaurant. Came across La Val and they seemingly have good review. So I ordered a pizza, it took 90 minutes to deliver, and it charged me $28 (tax included). The pizza was okay, better than chain stores, but we are thrilled to find a plastic wrap buried in the cheese. Can you believe that? They left a plastic wrap in the cheese. Never going to order from this place again, there are tons to restaurants out there for me to spend $28. read more

We were staying up the street in a hotel while in vacation and ordered via Yelp Eat 24. The delivery service itself was great, would order from Yelp again. The pizza itself was terrible. Oh, how this place has fallen over the years. I have such fond memories of ordering La Val's almost on a weekly basis when I was growing up. After a number of years living outside of the Bay, I finally moved back, and when I had a pizza craving, I remembered my old favorite. I placed my delivery order, and they said it would be 30-45 minutes, which is the norm. An hour later, no pizza. I called, and they said it was on its way but the driver just had a lot of orders. Not great, but ok. 20 minutes later, still no pizza. I called again, and they asked me to confirm what my order was. Clearly the pizza had not even been made yet. Flash forward, 2 HOURS after I ordered my pizza and still nothing. I called again, furious, and asked to speak to the Manager. Was told he was not there and that there was no one I could talk to. I expressed my frustration at their service. And, get this....the woman asked if I wanted to cancel my order!!!!!!! No apology, no offer to comp the pizza, just an offer to not even have to make/deliver the pizza, which clearly benefits them more than me. I was starving!!!! Finally, about 2hrs and 15 minutes after I'd placed my original order, a deliveryman showed up with a lukewarm pizza that was so greasy it was soaking through the box. Minimal toppings, soggy crust....just awful. Had we not been waiting so long for dinner, we probably wouldn't have even eaten it. Sorry, La Val's, never again. read more

Really disappointing experience! We order lunch for the office on Thursdays and this morning Eat24 was glitching, so I googled "pizza delivery" near our area. La Val's came up and I've eaten at the one in Alameda, so I placed an order online at around 10 a.m., scheduling delivery for 1:00. I worked at my desk all morning, but there is some running around to do in the last hour to get ready for our meeting, so when they called at 12:28 and left a message saying that we are outside of their delivery area and they are not going to make our order (totally unapologetic even though their website caused the problem BTW... just a tone sounding like I should have known better), I didn't get the message until I picked up my phone at 1:15 to check if they called to say they were lost or running late. Instead I found out that we don't have a delivery at all. Why would you wait until 30 minutes before an order is supposed to be delivered to call a customer? You need at least an hour to get a substitution! I was tempted to one star them, but I did place a separate order this morning and the person who took that order took down my special instructions and was really pleasant. I am hoping that delivery (in Berkeley, not Emeryville) goes through without a hitch, so lesson learned... BEWARE IF USING THE ONLINE ORDERING TOOL ON THEIR WEBSITE. A note to La Val's: Check orders as they come in and call a customer as soon as you see an issue. It's BS getting notice at the last minute and having an office full of hangry workers! when i think of la vals, i think of slices: slice of pizza slice of the day slice of life slice it anyway you want to slices and dices sliced thin sliced it a good lunch place. reasonable and economical. not bad for dinner either with their $0.99 dinner salad (got to get those veggies). they have a big tv to watch sports on, although the quality of the image is totally wack. i'm talking 1990s projection big screen here. their downstairs theatre is supposed to be good too... ...if you're into that kind of thing. read more

Pizza is OK. I stopped by on a Sunday afternoon and the dude at the counter wasn't able to sell me a slice of pepperoni pizza, claiming it would be a 20 minute wait. This is kind of like Starbucks running out of coffee. The place is consistently filthy too which is probably fine for the college set but not for me. Two great reasons why I come to this joint: 1) delivery during finals week and 2) away Cal football games!!! Good selection of pizza. I love light pizzas that don't make you feel groggy afterward; that being said, my personal favorites are the Athenian and the "Hula" Hawaiian. Beware that the olives in the Athenian are not the typical black olives, they're the fresher and stronger flavored ones. Yummm! For away Cal games, many students who live on Northside make the trek here to watch, eat and drink here (yep! this place sells booze!! beer on tap) This place can get super crowded so come early to get a table with a prime viewing location of the big screen. The atmosphere is nice, but the pizza was certainly nothing to come back for. I'd much rather have Blondie's or Fat Slice. They have a big screen TV so people tend to congregate to watch the current game. They do have plenty of seating, but with video games and a big screen TV all in the same area, it can tend to get loud. read more

A good place to watch sports on the large-flat screen television and have a beer. And the food is better than one might think. Both the pizzas and pastas are decent -- think the quality of higher-end frozen dinners. They won't wow you, but you'll be reasonably happy. The food here isn't very good. The pizza is nowhere near as good as Blondie's or fat slice and the sandwiches/pasta dishes are not the greatest. Yet I've eaten here dozens of times but that's only because it's a block from where I used to work, at Etcheverry, and you can only eat burritos four times a week. The fifth day you gotta diversify. I never thought I would, but I'm kind of hooked on this pizza. It's thin and crispy and delicious. Over on North campus every time it's pizza it's always la val's, which actually makes me excited when i hear "pizza" at an event. yum. sometimes the people taking the order are a little inefficient, and the people making the food are also a little inefficient, but you don't have to wait terribly long. Pizza, beer, cheap prices, big ass TV; I'm definitely a fan. I grabbed lunch here very often during my summer spent at Cal and the food was good every single time. You can get a big combo slice for $2.75+tax and it comes with a free small drink during lunch hours. They also have salads and pasta on their menu and according to people eating with me, those items are well prepared too but I can only opine on the pizza. Try the athenian, it was surprisingly good! Pretty relaxing place to go and eat pizza - I like the ambiance! There's a giant TV that plays sports all the time and it just feel very cozy inside. This review is dedicated to MK & AK. I didn't get to eat here as much as I wanted to because of the distance. (I'm pretty lazy.) But this place is pretty awesome. This is what I recommend that you do: 1) Make two awesome friends, and find a date you guys can spend at least 3 hours together. 2) Get tickets online (cheaper!) to watch Disassembly at the Impact Theatre. (It's inside La Val's. You can even order food if you arrive early for the show and take food downstairs. It's really cozy.) 3) If you live more than 5 blocks away, drive to Euclid and street park. It's free around dinner time. (Hopefully one of your friends drive. :D ) 4) Watch the show. Laugh, cry, and be confused. The experience is totally worth $10! :D (We all meant to go for the past 4 years, but didn't really get to until our last.) 5) Try to order the pear cider only to find out that it's not carried anymore. Hopefully, your friend knows the manager. He'll mix some lemonade, cider, and wine for you and your friends instead for FREEE! 6) Order hot wings, medium sized pizza (half La Val's Special, half Garden Delight), and Chicken Alfredo. 7) BEAST on all the delicious food! YUMZ! (The pasta is especially good, not too greasy or salty.) I've pretty much tried all the pizzas (delivered) and La Val's aren't the best in Berkeley (After all, how can places compete with gourmet pizzas like Cheeseboard, Little Star, and Zachary's?). 3 stars. But the experience of watching a show and eating afterwards makes La Val's 5 stars! Dine-in at least once, and don't just order pizza. Make sure to order some appetizers and pasta too. When I was living in Foothill my first year at Berkeley, it was hard to find good, affordable places to eat. Living on a student's budget can be tough, but Euclid had a few decent places to go for a study break with friends. La Val's has a decent selection of pizza and pasta, and if you want to sit with a book and eat or go with friends for a cheap night out, it's pretty good. The fettucini alfredo was creamy and al dente, but I wouldn't make a habit of eating here. The food is pretty heavy. read more

This is one of the best places to eat on the north side of campus. The slices of pizza run pretty large, which is awesome! I always throw dat garlic powder on top too. There's a $5 min for credit card charges but 2 slices will run you 5+ so it's never an issue for me. They make everything pretty quickly and have a good number of TVs to pass the time. There's ample seating and a pool table (mini) that you can pay to play on. Some of their pastas are also pretty good. Bathrooms are clean. read more
