LaVal's Berkeley is still solid pizza. Thank God. I used to come here all the time growing up and would love to stuff the video game machine with quarters. The pizza was solid and the price is pretty good. $8 for a slice and that includes a drink. Better than other old-school pizza places in Berkeley. The staff was nice, especially after we left a jean jacket there and they still had it for us when we came back looking for it. I've always been a fan of Northside Berkeley. We came here before our play at Theater Lunatico on a weeknight and this place had a steady stream of customers and people. You order at the front and wait for your order to be called. You seat yourselves at any of the available tables and there are many throughout with like 3 different areas. I think the main draw to this place is the price -- I saw pizza slices for around $4 and our calzones were $13. My partner and friend paid $7 for a glass of wine. The food was pretty good too. Though I will say my calzone could have used more cheese and more sauce. But overall the ingredients were fresh. They also have pastas there's and when we walked across to grab utensils and other items the pastas smelled so good. Things very solid fast casual place to grab a quick bite to eat! Windows overlooking the avenue and sidewalk provided a means to people watch while dining. Workers were consistent and reliable. La Val's is a solid place to get pizza in Berkeley! Ive visited them a few times and have never been disappointed by the food or the workers. The first time, I tried their mozzarella sticks which were perfectly fried and delicious on their own and with ranch. I've tried their margarita style pizza, veggie pizza, and most recently the cheese pizza. I really like a thin crust and La Val's nails the thinness of their crusts. The sauce could be a bit more flavorful, but again it's pretty consistent. My least favorite of the three i've tried would be the margarita. It was too many tomatoes for my liking. My favorite would definitely be the cheese, it's a classic! I also appreciate that their pizza isn't super greasy. I will definitely be back soon! The establishment is pretty spacious and there are some benches outside in a really cute area which I very much appreciate. I definitely recommend checking them out! read more

LaVal's is a Berkeley institution and has been a fixture in North Berkeley for decades. Their specialty is pizza though they also have pastas and sandwiches. I recommend sticking with the pizza (past meals of calzone and eggplant sandwich were just mediocre). After the Cal football game, we ordered the LaVal's special with pepperoni, salami, linguica, beef (we substituted double sausage), sausage, bell pepper, onion, mushrooms and black olives. I was expecting cardboard crust but it was surprisingly buttery, light, airy and delicious. The large was enough for 4 people; we also split a Greek salad. It wasn't too crowded inside so we watched some football and played pool. They have a good selection of beer (had a Blue Moon) and wines (good pours on the wine). It had been years since I'd gotten my hands on a La Val's pizza! I already knew I was about to grub. Throw DOWN on a pie! Yessir! And that, I did. This location has a cute communal outdoor dining space that's shared with the other restaurants in the square. Since the indoor dining was closed due to COVID, I decided to have a seat outside on their patio. The interior space is nice and spacious with several TV's mounted on the walls and game tables the dining room. I bet this place is fun when it's open for indoor dining. They had a mini pizza and soda combo special that I happily took advantage of. Went with a classic pepperoni pizza since that's what I remember getting when I used to go to the Alameda location. The guy at the register seemed overwhelmed and it took a while for him to take my order and for my pizza to come out. I'd say, don't come here in a hurry. Have some patience and you'll be just fine. I have to say, the pizza here was just how I always remembered it to be. Cheesy, greasy, flavorful, and yummy! I really like how they prepare their pizza crust. It's crispy on the bottom but still slightly doughy in the middle. Literally the best of both worlds if you ask me. And that's how I love my pies! Is it the best pizza in the world?! I was craving something cheesy and this hit the spot. The mozzarella was rich and stretchy. Exactly what I needed.

I was waiting in line for cheeseboard, but the line was insanely long. Then we found this place, and it turned out a great spot. We walked here for 20mins and I saw some beautiful redwood trees and architectures on the way there. The food turned out great. I loved their wings. It was not excessive sauced, and the wings were grilled well. Both pizzas were great too. Mini size is good for one person. We had a great time sitting outside under the trees. When I went in last night, I ordered the veggie pizza with no cheese. They asked if I would like the vegan cheese. I said no thanks, I don't care for it and find it slimy. La Val's is a no frills budget student hangout. The decor is rickety, there's a pool table in one room and a sports large screen TV in another, and greasy picnic tables and benches outside in the courtyard. And, candidly, I've had better pizzas in several Berkeley spots. So why do I give them five stars? This place is an incredible value. Their toppings aren't as gourmet or elegant as Rose or State Flour (2 of my local faves), but they make an excellent New York style crust, thin, crispy with a little char. And the toppings may not include burata,or wild mushrooms, or arugula, but they do the basics very well. I like the sausage with garlic and onions, but there are all the usual options. And the pies are half the price of their more elegant competitors. The value includes beverages. They have about 8 taps with artisanal beers and ciders. Washes the pizzas down very nicely. They also have excellent chicken wings. I haven't tried the sandwiches, pastas, or salads yet, but what I've seen looks pretty good. And although the furnishings are very modest, the staff are very helpful and friendly. Bottom line: not a great choice for a first date or a business meal, but perfect for a delicious meal without hurting your wallet. read more

I opt for the La Val's special which is ultimately a combo pizza with the standard pepperoni, sausage, onions, green bell pepper and mushrooms on a thin crust with red sauce. This comes out to less than $10. La Val's pizza is definitely best eaten right away so the cheese doesn't harden. Seating is generally always available since it's a pretty big space with your choice of a booth or a table. Definitely one of my go to places when I don't want to walk far. read more

La Val's pizza isn't like, hipster artisan or anything, but it's decent pizza at a decent price in a decent venue. It has thin crust, a good amount of toppings, and cheese that is adequately cheesy. I admittedly have a thing for cute personal pizzas, and at $7-9 a pie, they aren't a bad deal. Pasta is pretty tasty too - the sauce on the chicken penne is deliciously buttery. What really sets this place apart from others on the block is its seating area. Around campus, even the existence of seating area makes a restaurant ***fancy***. La Val's seating area is quite spacious with lots of windows, and the tables are large and made of wood. Such high class. So sophisticated.
