It's cool, you know. It be cooler if the salad dressing were homemade, Pizza has a crunch and chew that reminds me of Pizza Hut, which I like, i like that the cheese and toppings are good and toasty. Yay!

This place has switched ownership and has great upgrades. Pizza is consistently good. Nothing fancy. Just well done.

Got a "large" pizza. Was surprised about how small it was. The quality was okay but the price was high considering the competition.

Ordered slices of pepperoni, Julian, and Spinaci Aglio. All were amazing. Thin, crisp crust, tangy pizza sauce, good olive oil, great cheese pull. Simple ingredients coming together for a satisfying and piping hot bite. Pepperoni drips with the golden orange oil, characteristic of a solid pep slice. Spinaci has just enough garlic that works perfectly with the mild spinach. The star of Julian is the near crunchy kale complemented by pops of sausage. Place your order inside and pick up at the window just outside when they call out your order. There's a park a block or so down the road that's a great place to stop by and enjoy your slice if the small bench in front is filled up.

20-year loyal customer shocked by the increasingly rude front staff…read more We have been coming to Gioia Pizzeria for over 20 years. It's our neighborhood go-to, and we eat here at least once a week because the pizza is truly excellent. For nearly two decades, the staff was always friendly, but over the last couple of years, the front-of-house service has drastically gone downhill. The people taking the orders consistently seem like they don't want to be there. I've been overlooking the cold attitude for a while now because we love the food, but my experience today was the last straw. I ordered a whole pie and politely asked to have it double-sliced. The cashier looked visibly annoyed by a simple, standard request. It got worse when the pizza was ready: after she handed me the box, I kindly asked for a few paper plates. She literally threw the plates at me with a glaring look of unhappiness. I was honestly in shock by her behavior. Stunned, I asked her what her name was, and she flat-out refused to tell me. There is absolutely no reason to treat a regular, polite customer with that level of hostility over plates and a name request. I believe people need to be held accountable for how they treat others, especially in customer service. Looking at other recent reviews, I see that I'm definitely not the only one feeling this way. Gioia has been one of our absolute favorite pizzerias in Berkeley for over 20 years, but it's a shame to see a great neighborhood spot ruined by the attitude of the people taking orders. I am truly hoping management and the owners will read this and take real action. The food is still great, but the toxic energy at the front counter is ruining the experience, and loyal customers shouldn't be treated like an inconvenience. This incident happened today at 1130am.

Very unacceptable! Don't be going to people's address with some kind of punka** attitude about the front gate, or gate code not working, acting like as if they're responsible to fix the gate. Who does that delivery driver think he is? If there's a problem with the front gate, or gate code of a condo, or apartment. You respectfully with at least some sort of common sense, let the resident know, or if possible, go to the manager's office (if and when someone is there) which the manager can contact maintenance, rather than you come busting out your car with a stupid attitude about it. It's not my friend's responsibility to fix the gate, so informing the manager's office is a better option. I swear I better not see that happen again whenever I visit my friend, and we just happen to order pizza again. Got it? I hope I made myself clear.

The pizza was rolled very thin, but there was almost zero rise in the crust at all: the crust was dense and not airy. If I were to guess, the pizza dough had probably been sitting out for far too long, leading to the dough being way over-proofed. The cubes of lamb topping the pizza had a strange sourness to it and were incredibly dry. Similarly, the wings were also overcooked and very dry, and didn't really have much flavor to them at all. At $33.99 for an X-Large pizza (before tax and tip), you might as well head over to June's pizza in West Oakland to get a pizza for the same price. This was seriously one of the most disappointing pizza's I've eaten in all of 2025.

Between the two of us, we shared "The Bee's Knees," which had a tomato base, mozzarella, Italian sausage, soppressata, Mike's hot honey, ricotta dollaps, and fresh basil ($24). Overall, a very delicious pizza: perfect balance of sweet and savory. You can never go wrong topping a pizza with a drizzle of Mike's hot honey. For about $30 after tax and tip, it's certainly not a cheap pizza -- especially for its size, but consider it a donation to support your local artisans. The dough was rolled out very thinly and evenly, and the crust puffed up nicely and had a good chew to it. If you ever have a chance to see Pie On The Fly at a pop-up somewhere, I'd definitely recommend giving them a try. Their pizzas are tasty and the staff could not be nicer.
