First time having bbq in LA and I heard about this place from my co workers so I had to come check it out. First impression- food was amazing. I loved what I got, which was the brisket sandwich with a side of beans. The brisket was juicy (a little fatty but not to much) and tender. I loved the slaw on the inside as well as what I believe is either sweet pickles or sweet jalapeños. The bbq sauce is flavorful. Nice mix between tangy and sweet. The beans were a 8/10. Tasted good (I don't like sausage so I didn't like the sausage in it). My only downside with the beans is there was so little on my plate. I was assuming I'd get an actual side like a side cup. But they placed it in the tray and it was just enough for only 3 bites with 2 slices of sausage in it. So that was little disappointing, while my friend got the Mac and had a whole side cup. Overall I give this place a 8/10. And I would recommend this to a friend but ask for the beans in a side cup:). read more

I love barbeque. This is a recent development within the last few years. I wasn't properly schooled on how good barbeque should taste, so as a result I ate a lot of bad barbeque and then started avoiding it all together. I now know how good barbeque should taste, or at the very least I know what I like. I like La 23 BBQ. Look, I have no excuse why it took me so long to get here. None. I lived less than ten minutes away from this place for years and yet last week was the first time I tried it. After hearing raves from fellow foodies, I knew that I had made a mistake waiting so long to get my hands on this delicious food. From the outside, La 23 looks pretty basic: it's a roadside stand with tables and chairs on a big covered patio. You walk up to the window, tell them what you want and they bring it out to you in a "go box" and you can go on your way or you can eat on site. I decided to get the two meat half and half platter with two sides for $16. I figured this was a pretty good deal for this kind of lunch. I got the brisket and the jalapeño sausage with mac and cheese and cole slaw. Brisket- delicious, juicy and cooked to perfection with a lot of flavor. One bite of this goodness left me wishing I had just gotten two big portions of this meat and called it a day. It had the perfect amount of smoke and I enjoyed it. Sausage- pretty good. It didn't blow me away, but I was really in the mood for sausage so I enjoyed it. I would get it again, but I wouldn't get this as my only meat. I think it's a good compliment to any other meat you might get. Mac and cheese- WHOA! Some of the best mac and cheese I have ever had. Really gooey and cheesy with great flavor. I now understand why some people's pictures of this place show them with two servings of this stuff. It's phenomenal. Cole slaw- if you aren't a fan of cole slaw with mayo, this is the cole slaw for you. More like a light salad, I don't think there was any mayo in it at all and maybe it was made with some vinegar? I'm not sure, but it was good. La 23 definitely lived up to the hype and I would go back. This is probably one of the better barbeque places in the area and I hope that they stick around and stay on the Westbank and just let people drive out and make the trip. I wish they had another "green" side like sprouts or something like that but, other than that, I have no complaints about this spot. I've been looking for a good dry rub Texas style BBQ in NOLA and I finally found it. There are some other BBQ spots here that get a lot of press but LA23 is my favorite for sure. It's a ways out in Belle Chase and it outdoor seating only but three big fans kept the air moving so it was comfortable enough on a hot summer day. The ribs we really big and had a great rub on them. The brisket and pulled pork done perfectly and the portions are big. Super friendly they'll bring you your food and them come and check on you to make sure it's right. If Central Texas BBQ is what you crave, I dare say this is the most authentically Lone Star flavored option in the New Orleans area. Before we dive into my opinion of LA23's food (spoiler alert, its good!), lets talk about the Texas style. The defining ingredients are a relatively simple rub of salt and pepper for the brisket, along with paprika/sugar/etc. for more neutral flavored meats like pork and chicken. Then the real magic happens with an 8 to 12 hour smoke over "post oak" hardwood. This particular wood is incredibly important because it gives central Texas BBQ its characteristic dry yet distinctive woody note. Some people really love the simplicity in perfect execution of this style while others shun it for the Memphis/Carolina/Georgia styles which will use different spice blends and flavor woods. ---ON TO THE REVIEW ALREADY!--- LA23 has been around for a few years, but only in the last few months with their improved facility and dining area. Thanks to their increased capacity and larger kitchen, even the largest lunch rushes tend to only set you back 5 or 10 minutes. You get polite, but fast service from the guys behind the counter, and then away they go to the meaty assembly line for your meal. Within a few minutes of ordering, a styrofoam container filled with delicious meat and sides will be called out to you (the service is really that quick). This go round I kept it smaller and ordered the brisket sandwich with an included side of beans. Having your sandwich "Dressed" is a departure from the lettuce/tomato/mayo standard of po boys and consists of a bit of BBQ sauce, slaw, and spicy pickles. The brisket was wonderfully moist, smokey, and slightly spicy from the black pepper rub and the dressing tied the flavors together wonderfully. My only minor complaint was that the sandwich came on a run of the mill cheap grocery store sesame seed bun, but I can't get too upset about that considering. The beans deserve their own paragraph, so here we are! Bush's baked beans these are not, but one of the best side dishes I've ever encountered (Central City BBQ's "sweet corn spoonbread" is the best). These navy beans swim in a bath of sweet and smokey sauce with shreds of brisket and slices of sausage. They are definitely more on the soup side consistency wise, and dang delicious! If making it down to Belle Chasse is going to be a rare occasion, and you just want to try what LA23 has to offer, go for the "Top gun" platter. 3 meats, 2 sides, and a whole lot of sleep after finishing are a great crash course in this BBQ joint's flavors. read more

Best BBQ I've had in this area then again, (aside from a party in someone's backyard or a park) this is the only BBQ I recall having in this area so technically it is the best. I'm not trying to be condescending. The BBQ is good but I have no other place to compare it to. The closest BBQ joint that comes to mind is The Shed in Ocean Springs, MS. On my way to pick up my sister kids from school, I passed up this place that looks like a roadside stand with a good amount of customers eating at their outdoor seating in the cold so you know they are serving something good. While waiting for the kids to be released from school, I used Yelp to find the name of the place and found out they served BBQ. I read some of the reviews that they have odd closing time so I was crossing my fingers they would still be open by the time we pass by. We lucked out and they were still open. There were only two customers left eating when we walked to the counter. I've ate before I picked up the kids so I only ordered the three meat and sides combos for them to share. We decided on the Ribs, Brisket and Pulled pork. The two side were beans and Mac n Cheese with toast. I ordered a Beef sausage link also because I'm a sucker for anything that has jalapenos. After having a taste of everything, I regret having had lunch before picking up the kids from school. The brisket is my favorite, so tender and the taste of smoke on it melts in your mouth. The rib was rub spiced to perfection and the pulled pork was also delicious. I'm a sauce person and while giving a taste to all the three meat we got, I didn't had to add extra sauce. Even the Mac n Cheese and beans had Smoky flavor on them. Nothing but yummies. The beef sausage link was a little pricey for $4 but well worth it. While the kids were finishing up, out cashier walked around cleaning up and I found out the reason they close up shop at different time eat day. Once all the meats are either sold out or if it looks like there are no customers, the close up. I live on the Westbank so it's a great find for me and a treat to find this place. .....update on my earlier review. I often pass by LA 23 BBQ as treat/snack on my way back or to Lake Hermitage. The establishment is a bit pricey but I keep my order very simple,jalapeño sausage. After a long day of camp repair I stopped in for the usual,when given the total I was SHOCKED by the additional 25% increase in the price! The cost is $5 per link,for a 5oz or less link! When I asked about the increase,I was told the lower price was a 'special' but it has been $4 for since I first started stopping to get product there! The publicity that this place has received maybe has got them a bit rambunctious in their pricing! I'll be delaying my stop til Rouses to pick up a full pound of andouille for the same $5. Thanx! Sadly, the Mac did not live up to what the reviews said. The pulled pork sandwich was good. Had it topped with slaw, jalapeño, and sauce. Bottom line, hands down, end of story... this place in my humble opinion is THE BEST BBQ on the Westbank. Period. Only second in the Nola area to The Joint and then Squeal in 3rd place. Yes, its a starting dream business by a couple of charter boat fisherman that were tired of being broke in the off season, as was told to me by one of the owners, Bobby. They gave it a shot, hired some super awesome staff and here we are. The best damn BBQ on the Westbank. So with it being a start up, the seating is outdoors only. So its not always ideal when like recently super cold or sometimes rainy, but you know what?....its totally worth it. As a matter of fact, I am not sure they should change anything. It is what it is. In the beauty of its simplicity, the guys are able to focus on the food. I heard that they begin smoking the brisket and pork at 5:30 pm the day before. And start dark and early in the morning every day to handle up on the meat. Man...it certainly taste fantastic! The mac and cheese and the beans that comes as a side with the plates is also a hero in their own rights. Both I gobble up with no effort. You see it in the before after pics I posted. On occasion they have different sausages too. The daily special changes so definitely pay attention to the chalk boards. Bobby has also mentioned to me that they are starting to do catering as well. At the moment , mostly at the plants and refineries in the area with huge orders, but give him a call. He is extremely friendly and has an incredible passion you can see when he talks about the business and the quality of the BBQ coming out of this very humble shack. The prices are a good value here and its in a nice location as long as you don't mind ordering to go or sitting outside in their very small courtyard (which won't keep you dry if it happens to be raining). I had the brisket plate and it was decent brisket with a large serving but it still doesn't reach the deliciousness level of The Joint. The brisket at LA23 is better and more tender than most of the other options currently available in the GNO area other than the reigning BBQ champion, The Joint. The beans and slaw were ok but nothing amazing other than the slaw being exceptionally fresh. My pet peeve of having the BBQ sauce doled out like it is made of diamonds is practiced here and thus you only get a small little container of it with your meal instead of being able to add your own quantity from a squirt bottle. The sauce was too sweet for my liking and I would have liked some more spice and vinegar to it. The best thing about this place is that its right next to the Becnel's Farmer's Market so you can add some more variety to your meal. The people working at both the BBQ and the Market are really nice and friendly folks. They only have canned drinks here along with bottled water and I would like to see some fresh brewed iced tea. Overall it is a nice little trip out of the city to visit this place for some BBQ and do some shopping at the Farmer's Market but it still isn't going to tempt me away from the Joint very often unless I just happen to be in the area on my way to fish or shoot but this is certainly one of the few real BBQ options around Belle Chasse and should do very well. read more

How do I describe the delectable food that comes out of the tiny little hut that is LA 23 BBQ? It is better than I could have imagined. When I got out of my car, my stomach was instantly empty. The smell made me more hungry than I have been in months. The smell of the BBQ can only be described as perfect. The perfect amount of smoke and sweetness grabs you and drags you to the window. When you get to the window, it slides open and the aroma that wafts out seals the deal. If you had any hope of escape, it is gone the second the smell of the meat hits you. You are a prisoner to the BBQ. You cant wait to get to the tiny little courtyard to eat this food. you dont wait long, the service is fast. I had the brisket plate with coleslaw and baked beans. (I was hoping for potato salad, but alas, I was denied) The brisket was just perfect. As you can see in my picture, it is cooked perfectly, the outside is firm, the inside is just..well there are no words. Luscious comes to mind. The beans were both sweet and savory. I normally dislike baked beans, but I could eat these all day long. They have sausage in them and the taste just knocks your socks off. The slaw was fresh, but to be honest, I barely remember the taste,It isnt the star of the show! Unlike so much barbeque around this area, you don't need the slaw to brighten up the taste of the meat. The meat just stands on it's own. They don't over load your plate with sides, and you get your money's worth of good quality food. The service was quick and polite. Not one bad thing to say, the people seem genuinely happy to be there. I am now a LA23 addict. They have made me their lunch slave, along with the steady stream of military and plant workers and locals that drive up, hop out and drive off with their BBQ treasure. Ribs were tender and meaty, and done with just enough sweet and spice. Brisket was moist and tender and the BBQ was juicy and smokey. Baked beans with big chunks of sausage were most excellent. Crunchy coleslaw was the best I've had in awhile. There is a nice court yard to sit and eat in next to Lemon trees and a great little produce stand. The service was very hospitable and the waitress treated us as if we were old friends. We were checked on several times by staff even though we didn't expect them to do so! My family and I got here around 5pm and we wish we came earlier because they were out of the baked beans and I really wanted to try them. They only had enough brisket left for one more sandwich so I was in luck because that's what I wanted, I guess the lunch rush is the best time to come . It wasn't busy at this time and we got our food hot and fast. My wife got the ribs plate with slaw and mac and cheese -$14, my son got the chicken plate with double mac and cheese- $10, and I got the Brisket sandwich with a side of mac and cheese -$9.50. It was good for the time of day (we got there 2 hours before closing again lunch time is the best time), the brisket sandwich was the best thing we got and the chicken was juicy and falling off the bone but the skin was pretty burnt as you can see in the pic so my son didn't want to eat the skin, the ribs were a bit tough and either over cooked or just old considering it was the end of the day, the slaw is GREAT and the mac amd cheese is good. They have great customer service, very friendly. Also yummy sauces on every table. We leave town in a week and will come back during lunch and try the backed beans and get the meat at its best. I'm not a fan of smoked meats and dishes, Their side dishes even tasted smoked. But if you're a fan of the smoked flavor, you'll love it.

This is the best place to grab lunch on the West Bank! They are going to be doing renovations starting mid May 2016 into the summer and will be expanding their hours to include dinner when they reopen. Definitely the best option for BBQ in the Greater Nola area!! read more

Located just outside of the main gate of NAS JRB NOLA, this place is a no frills kind of BBQ stand. The day we stopped here, only the pork and brisket was left. They had sold out of the ribs and chicken and what thy had left, they were running low on. The brisket was moist and pretty good. The sandwiches are served with coleslaw and pickles. The sauce was already on the sandwich when I received mine. I had the Mac and cheese, which was creamy and tasted homemade. Overall, my dining companions and I enjoyed our food. A silly observation was that I was a little taken aback by the lack of tea. I can't recall ever having BBQ without sweet tea. read more

The best BBQ I have had in years. Brisket was mouth watering moist smokey tender and just pure delicious ness. Chicken moist and smokey simply perfect and the ribs yes you guessed it perfect. Just the right amount of rub and smoke tender but still a little chew. You have a variety of sauces to add for your pleasure all very good. Sweet and smokey beans and tangy Cole slaw a match made in heaven. And for me what I like is that they put an out of food sign out almost every day sometimes before 12:30 inconvient when I don't get there early enough but at least I know my BBQ is fresh and isn't being reheated. For years I had tried to get down the road to eat here but my work schedule never permitted or they were sold out early and closed up. Pork was awesome and so were the beans I didn't even need sauce for it. It was a nice day outside so we stayed to eat. While on a Westbank exploration tour my friend and I stopped at LA23 on the recommendation of my friend David G. I tried the brisket sandwich and it was really really good. The brisket was smoked tender with a great rub that didnt need sauce. I had the slaw which was good and great smoky beans filled with meat. Its so hard to find a bbq place with great sides these days. When on the Wank and in the area hungry its a must stop especially on a nice fall or spring day since its only outside seating. read more

The pulled pork and the brisket is always amazing , the last time I came I got the ribs to try something different and man I was glad I did because they were so good . I wish they had more options with their sides. but the most was smoked very well and tender. Ribs and pulled pork were a little dry, but the taste overcame that. I really don't know where to start outside of just driving around and looking at the area. Being from Florida I always seek local barbs restaurants and places for fried chicken. I drove by one evening and knew I wanted to stop .... why? It looked like a place that would have some good Q! On my return to the hotel, I pulled in to give it a try. They signaled through the window that they were closed. Even with that, they came out and talked. We talked about how their business was going and about barbecue for about 15 minutes. Before I left they told me they had half a brisket they could give me and apologized it wasn't sliced. Are you kidding me???? I readily accepted .................... returned to the hotel and thoroughly enjoyed the brisket. It was very very good. Infant it is only second to Franklin's Brisket i Austin, Texas and that my friends is pretty high cotton! The brisket was great and the customer service is even greater!!!! Stopped in and ate lunch here today. I had the pulled pork sandwich, which came with one side, and I had the baked beans. The pork was very good. It wasn't dry, and wasn't overwhelmed with too much smoke. It had a good flavor to it. The beans were really good also. The staff was friendly and put the orders out very quick. I wasn't a fan of their sweet tea. It wasn't very sweet, I think it had lemon juice in it ?? Not real sure what the wang was. It wasn't strong enough for my taste. I just politely dropped it in the trash as we left and went across the street to the store and bought another. I gave them the full 5 stars just because I feel like my taste in tea doesn't reflect how someone else likes to drink or make theirs. Overall, I had a great experience and will return for more. A friend recommended this place when I went to the Navy Base for work. It has a great location of right across the street. This place is amazing.
