Stopped in here today because I had seen a sign they had outside about honey & lavender latte (which I've become obsessed with since I moved to Ohio). I've experienced so many times where the balance between the two flavors isn't quite right where one seems to overpower the other. Here, it wasn't. The sweetness wasn't an issue either. It was just the right amount The only thing I docked a point on was time. When it comes to coffee, I prefer to be in and out. However, there was only one person working behind the counter (who by no means was rude, she was actually very friendly). This is my go-to spot when catching up with friends! I really love the natural light, the cute seating, and the flower arrangements that makes the spot so cozy. The cafe has a combination of different types of seating that ranges from a high-top communal table to an assortment of benches and plush chairs in one corner. I'm a huge fan of their lattes and their snacks -- their rice krispies and caramel/chocolate cake especially . I usually stick to their vanilla and matcha lattes, but I believe they also have fun flavors like beetroot, rose, and lavender for the more experimental customers too. If you're looking to do work, I'd recommend charging up your computer before you go. There are a couple outlets around the cafe, but they're a bit hard to get to depending on where you end up sitting. They also play great music! Also, I always tell people who have never been here that it's a very instagrammable spot if you're looking for coffee shops to add onto your "coffee" highlights on Instagram -- haha. read more

Limited seating, but darn delicious lattes and snacks. Everything is adorable and cozy-chic, and you'll spot at least a couple fellow-patrons artfully arranging their items for that perfect insta shot. Lab is good spot to catch up with a friend, meet that girl from tinder you're on the fence about, or escape a hectic, grey day. It's not a great spot to settle in and read or write a paper -- though plenty try. It does get quite loud between the music and all the conversations, but not to the point of needing to raise one's voice to be heard. Baristas are helpful and very sweet (if occasionally unbearably hip), and the space is clean and bright. Sometimes, you just need a latte that's both sweet and a little salty, served at a perfectly drinkable temperature, to clear your head and recenter yourself. And maybe a baked treat for good measure. Four years on campus and this was my first time here! Whenever I pass by, it always looks so busy, so I've never tried finding a table to study here. Decided to give it a go on a Monday afternoon, hoping it'll be a little less busy. I had the matcha latte with almond milk, and it was fantastic! None of that powdery aftertaste that can happen sometimes, and definitely not overwhelmingly sweet. The staff was quick and friendly, no complaints here! The place has a great vibe, definitely a space I can see myself studying in. There were people constantly in and out, so even though there was space with the tables, it was definitely busy. There's not much seating, so if you want to secure a study space make sure you get here on off-peak hours. Only complaint would probably be that it's attached to the tomukun noodle bar, so the smell of ramen definitely fills the air over coffee. But that's a small complaint with how awesome the place is. read more

YUM!! grand opening today! its a coffee, tea, and yogurt place! It was 50% off and had amazing carrot cake from Sparrow, donuts from the cider mill, and also frozen yogurt (mango, blueberry, original). Though they said the yogurt flavored mango was not as strong as it should be it had a citrus taste and texture that I liked the most out of the ones and I had that topped with mango, raspberries, and strawberries...some mochi on the side too. My roomie got a latte and some carrot cake and I ended up getting a slice too ( amazing from sparrow in kerry town and the frosting was great with a good amount of soft cake and nuts in it). The prices are good for coffee drinks and they do a pretty good job with the place and service. The people were super nice! GO CHECK IT OUT!!!! lots of bright space, outlets, wireless! I'm not sure if u can sit around and do work since not enough room...Not that many seats but a cool place to meet up with people grab some coffee and talk. Despite the still growing coffee scene in Down town Ann Arbor, Lab remains a discrete gem of E. Liberty. As you step in to a clean yet stylish and welcoming environment, you will be greeted by a team of talented baristas. I inquired about their cappuccino(I prefer a more traditional). My barista informed me that their cap method is typically Americanized, however they prepared my order expertly, complete with a delicious, and robust layer of foam. The customer service at this cafe is genuine and sociable. I never feel as if the conversation is forced or contrived. Though Ann Arbor is a city with many coffee options, treat yourself today to a delectable Affogato and tip your server with gusto. read more

I give this place 5 stars just for serving me an exceptional cup of coffee. The rest really doesn't matter to me. Lab is a snooty, minimalist coffee shop in Ann Arbor. I love the name and the design and the concept. However, it was a little confusing. First there was no menu on the wall as you'd expect. There was just a cash register that had little menu cards in front of it. It looks like they serve any coffee drink you want. They also have a selection of coffees. It appeared that the coffee was prepared not by machine brew but by pouring hot water over a funnel with a filter and coffee. They also serve coffee by french press. I don't know what they really did, but it was good. Lab also serves the new frozen yogurt that's popping up everwhere a la Pinkberry. They had four flavors including the original tart, honeydew, lychee and another. I think the tart frozen yogurt is disgusting. There is also a little bar where you add your own toppings to the yogurt. However I didn't see a sign explaining how this worked or the pricing. There may be a scale and you may be charged by weight? I'm not sure. It depends what you want from a place and this isn't for everyone, but they definitely serve a mean cup of coffee if that's what you're into. After having some less than stellar experiences at Comet a few years ago (baristas interrupting conversations I was having with friends to inform me that global warming is not the same as climate change), I checked out Lab. Ever since, I have been a huge fan of Lab. The concept of lab is simple: high quality coffees that rotate really quickly. So you'll come here one week and be able to get 1 of 4 different coffees, and if you return 3 weeks later you'll be able to get all new coffees. This quick rotation allows you to get a try for all different coffees including Anthology, Handsome Coffee, Intelligentsia, Madcap, and more. On that note I would highly recommend checking Anthology out if you have not. They have an espresso that is occasionally at Lab that is the best I've ever had in my life. Their coffees are off the hook as well. Other than coffee, they focus on high quality baked goods from local chefs, and you can get frozen yogurt with mochi! Atmosphere: 3.5 stars There are only three 2-person tables, 8-person community table, two seat by the window, and a living room type with couches and coffee table at the other window. To go to the bathroom, you must use a key by the entrance with the coffee bean scooper attached. Coffee: So I ordered the most popular: brown sugar and sea salt latte. It was exactly what I imagined. sweet and salty. They actually did a pretty good job but I also felt like I need to take small sip rather than gulps to prevent sudden increase in my blood sugar. i give it 4 stars. There was the Tumeric Agave latte. I cook with Tumeric sometimes and chickened out from ordering it. Plus it didn't have any caffeine. According to the barista, it is just Tumeric, agave and steamed milk. Supposedly iced is better than hot. Food: I ordered some kind of a chocolate rice crispy. it was pretty good. wasn't too sweet which I devoured pretty fast. Overall: 3.5 stars rounded up to 4 stars. The place is super cute and trendy, and I definitely caved to the hipster vibe. The drinks sound very fancy, and sound like they would be delicious. But in reality you're paying $5 for something that's not really that good. The drinks were both an odd mix of flavors that didn't combine well in practice, and drowned out any taste of coffee. I went to the lab on my way into the office and it's super cute. They have a solid amount of seating along with bar stools off to the side for folks looking out the window. There are a ton of windows which brings in a lot of light - perfect for working remote. They also have lotions, balms and candles galore for purchase. The coffee and lattes are solid. I tried the lavender and a spiced mocha on my visits. It's a bit pricey when you get a milk alternative but what can you do. Overall it's a great spot to work but I would try parking elsewhere and then walking to the coffee shop. The street parking available out front is meter run so I imagine it would get expensive. read more

As a coffee lover, I try to visit as many coffee joints as possible... there are few of my favorites and because of the unique mixture of offering at the store, I'll have to rate the place a 4 stars. In addition to getting coffee/tea, you can get some baked goods that's provided from Songbird Cafe, you can enjoy froyo on the side (much better during the summer/fall)... I'm very picky when it comes to froyo and Lab is on my top 3 place to get great froyo. The Con side of it... - parking (yeah, it's downtown) - overflow of customers from the noodle bar waiting to be seated - it can get hectic from time to time. Lab is like that girl on Instagram with the perfectly edited hipster photos - minimalist, put together and amazing for latte art pics :) So far I've tried the brown sugar sea salt and green tea lattes, both of which are beautifully served and have just the right amount of sweetness. The decor is lovely and ambiance is so soothing. If I met the interior designer I'd hire him/her to do my apartment in a heartbeat. Only docking a star because space is limited. Very cute cafe that is connected by an open doorway to the noodle bar next door. This is only relevant because during dinner rushes, the noodle bar patrons wait in Lab's seating area so it may be difficult to find a spot to sit. I ordered the special beetroot latte which is caffeine free and made of beets, ginger, turmeric, palm sugar. Lightly spicy and sweet, this was the lowest sugar option I could find. In my opinion, it tastes better with a non-dairy milk substitute. I tried it with both milk and with oat milk and the latter allowed the flavors to come through much sharper. It was not particularly spectacular, but it was soothing and comes in a vibrant beet-pink color. Their blueberry oat bar had the texture of dried and congealed quick-cook oats. Not a fan, but I did like that it wasn't sweet. Solid for a breakfast snack, but not a luxurious dessert unless you're craving something plain. Would return for the space, ambiance, and coffee-table cookbooks but my drinks and snack were not a draw. read more

This is in downtown Ann Arbor in the student area (East) side of town. The cafe itself is stylish and has a bit of a big city feel. It is a bit cramped in a few areas and there is not allot of seating so if you plan to study come on the off times. The coffee/beverages we had was good. We had a cappuccino, a regular and iced tea. The coffee was a pour over and had wonderful flavor ad described by the barista. Why not four or five? The service. The price is not cheap but in line with other cafes with better quality coffee.......but those cafes march quality coffee with quality service. The two baristas were not unfriendly but definitely not friendly. There was slight tension and a a feeling like I was bothering them.... This is based on one visit and like all reviews can go up or down with repeat visits. These two baristas may be having a bad day, have an oppressive boss or need to look for nee lines of work.... Ann Arbor's hippest little cafe has a young, minimalist, and modern art/architecture-school vibe, like something you'd find in the contemporary bohemian districts of Zurich or Berlin. Lab is very much a curated experience, from their creative / exclusive coffee and teas, subtle froyo and sorbets, and small selection of baked goods and macarons, to their mixtape playlists, artfully-composed tumblr site, and hosting of various indie / electronic music events. Lab sources coffee like record stores carry labels. They are hustlers of culture - cafe cognoscenti in a town full of coffee snobs and addicts, where Starbucks, Sweetwaters, Comet Coffee, Espresso Royale, and Elixir Vitae all compete within a one-block radius. Their wall of concert flyers says as much about their clientele as Encore Records' down the block. I love that Lab exists and thrives in Ann Arbor. Decades ago, there used to be a very different institution known as The Lab that fostered the punk underground here. I half-expect (hope) to see the next local youth cultural movement trace back to this scrappy, new-beatnik coffee bar. Keep Ann Arbor awesome! read more

My ABSOLUTE go-to in Ann Arbor to study, chill and basically anything. I first discovered this gem on my way to the TechArb on State St. and since then, I have become a loyalty member. Their matcha green tea lattes are irreplaceable and the best I have ever had - and I've had them at Cha Cha Matcha in NYC. The place is very hip and great for Instagram shots. The seating place is limited though, so make sure to get their early in the day! The baristas are also very nice and have great recommendations for drinks and food. Their baked goods are mostly sourced from Songbird Cafe, vegan and gluten-free friendly and pretty cheap too. I have never gone wrong with any of their baked goods or drinks, and you can ask them to adjust anything you want in your drink order. If you have either food or drinks at the place, the silverware and plates they use are super cute! They look like little antiques from an Victorian England tea set. Again, perfect for the gram. They switch their food around depending on the season, but I would definitely recommend the pumpkin bar and Coconut Bundt Cake whenever they have it! They always have a great selection of pastries or cakes which are displayed so classically. I just love the recycled atmosphere they have going on. But their Wi-Fi is pretty spotty. What to get: 1) their cappuccinos are the creamiest 2) You don't have to go to France anymore for macaroons! (Check their website for daily flavors) 3) delicious frozen yogurt! (these rotate but ask for some free samples) 4) Matcha Latte: they do a creamy green tea latte which tastes like perfection What you can probably skip: 1) Honey & Lavender Latte: I just don't think I'm a fan of flavored lattes. While it's deliciously creamy, the honey is simply too sweet and you only get a slight hint of lavender to put off the sweetness. 2) PB Gluten Free Bar: it's really a protein bar as it has PB, oats, flax and sunflower seeds but it's just too rich in a way--and that's saying a LOT coming from me. Lab has my favorite coffee in Ann Arbor. Every time I go there I have an excellent experience. They have rotating blends of pour over coffee and I have never had a cup I didn't like. The baristas really put effort into every drink. They also have a great pastry/sweet treat selection from local bakeries. The location is lovely: big windows, lots of light, and music at an appropriate volume. It's a great study spot, but tables are difficult to get as the location isn't huge. As others have noted, this is a place with off-the-charts hipster vibes, but I'm getting to like it for an occasional visit. Clearly puts some care into their menu selections, although the results are not cheap. Might be the only coffee shop I've ever seen that also offers frozen yogurt! I have not tried their food selections extensively but they do seem to be fresh and nourishing. Offers a moderate range of seating, but often seems busy and full as the day goes on. When the adjoining restaurant is open for the day, that door is open for easy traffic flow between the two businesses. Their espresso drinks may be among the freshest in town, as evidenced by the care, attention and detail the baristas put into making them as well as the range of flavors - in fact, I'm writing this review after having enjoyed a lavender and honey latte direct from them. read more

Lab is an adorable coffee/tea/pastry shop just off of UM's campus. Given the name, I was expecting something coldly scientific, but the overall vibe was more akin to a modern twist on a Parisian cafe. The first thing that struck me was the amazing looking display of sweets--croissants, cakes, cookies, bars. I didn't indulge on this trip, but wow these things looked remarkable! I was disappointed to discover only two options for pour-over coffee, but was pleasantly surprised that they offered three different sizes (I just needed a small caffeine hit, so I was grateful to save an extra buck). The coffee (an Ethiopian) was bright and vibrant. Offsetting the lack of coffee options, I'll note that Lab offers wine and craft beer selections in addition to coffee and tea. The atmosphere is cozy and pleasant, though it probably wouldn't be my first choice for lingering. Much of the seating is around high-top communal tables, so I felt a little crowded even though it wasn't busy. All told, I was surprised and mostly impressed with my stop at Lab. If I can spare the calories, I'll definitely be back to try some of their pastries. It will probably not be my first choice for a study session, but it seems like a great spot for catching up with a friend or for a casual coffee date. read more

Stopped into Lab for some late afternoon hydration from the heat. I wanted some macarons, but sadly they were out until later in the week. Booo. We sipped on their iced jasmine peach and coconut oolong tea in lovely wide mouth mason jars. I liked the contemporary wood design throughout. I agree with other yelpers about their emphasis of design over comfort. I lasted for maybe ten minutes on their bench before we decided to leave. Their stools weren't any better. During my last night in AA, I stopped by this place to thaw myself out from the cold. It wasn't crowded but there were people sitting around, studying, socializing, and enjoying their cups of joe. I got myself a lavender mocha latte and my friend got their famously advertised lavender honey latte. I thought it was a bit overpriced, too. $8.25 for a medium and a small drink. Both were good but a bit too sweet. Their latte art wasn't that pretty either. The milk was already mixed with the drink by the time the barista drew our hearts and whatnot. It also did take awhile for them to make the drink, I had to wait about 10 minutes for my drink to be made since there was only 1 barista making our drinks. Lab is probably one of the places that I attend the most consistently in AA. While I'm not a super avid coffee addict, I do thrive on Americanos and Lab makes them pretty well. If you're not a big fan of coffee I do recommend any of their assorted lattes and mocha (hot chocolate + shot of espresso). Their teas are also a solid choice; an iced peach tea is perfect for the summer. They've recently switched to baked goods from Songbird Cafe which I can vouch for as the best cookies. Froyo is seasonal unfortunately so it won't be available til the weather gets warmer, but when it returns it's definitely one of the best on UM campus :) If you like a little noise when you study, Lab is a hit or miss -- depending on the barista, some crank up the music while other's put the volume at a more subtle level. Overall, it's one of my favorite places to study. Great vibes, awesome drinks, and a lot of seating. What more can you ask for from a cafe? read more

Wow. just wow. I enjoyed every minute of my 3 hours at lab. Let's start with the venue. It was crowded but I was still able to find a spot with an outlet to do work. The vibe is chill but classy and the dessert/snack bar makes your mouth water just looking at it. I ordered a Honey Lavender Latte with Almond milk and it was BOMB. the perfect mix between coffee, milk and herby sweetness. I camped out here for about three hours to do work because I like some white noise. I didn't have headphones in because I enjoy the hustle and bustle PLUS they had a Killer Beyoncé playlist to jam out to in the background. When I arrived, there was only one seat available, at the front counter with the sun streaming directly into my eyes. I felt sort of self-conscious sitting there, partially because I was slowly boiling alive and partially because the cafe itself looks like an Anthropologie catalog come to life and I was just in a t-shirt and jeans. I probably would have enjoyed this cute little spot and their amazing drink menu more if I could have found a cozy armchair in a poorly lit back corner somewhere. That's not a mark against them, just a tip: If you're planning to come here and you're at all given to self-consciousness, maybe at least put on some mascara and try to arrive before the noon rush. To their credit, the staff was very cheerful and friendly. My shrub was delicious and incredibly refreshing, and I hear the coffee is amazing. I'll definitely be back to grab a latte the next time I'm in the area. As others have mentioned, it is a little pricy compared to other cafes near to campus. I'm not sure I'd be comfortable sitting here to study, either. I'd worry about other potential customers having to turn away due to lack of seats.
