This was my first visit to Quest Diagnostics in a long time. I had been going to a different lab company for the last several years since they had some long term employees that could get my veins. I was honestly a bit nervous to go to Quest and encounter someone who hadn't worked with me before. Check-ins are done at the kiosk. It's easy to do and was literally just one to two minutes at most. I had an appointment for 1:00 pm and was called back less than five minutes later. Unfortunately for me, only one of my Dr's lab orders went through their system, so I had to get bumped out of my appointment. I called the MD office for them to re-send the orders and ended up being a "walk-in" but since they weren't super busy, I was called back again after ten minutes. The phlebotomist who worked with me was, Gervon? I hope I got that right. I meant to write his name down but got side tracked. Anyway, he was great. He was progressional, and easily without hesitation, able to find a vein on me. The poke was painless. It was so fast. Gervon, filled several vials and was done before I even realized he was switching them out. I will definitely be asking for him during future visits. I was very happy from start to finish. At no point was I informed that certain departments, facilities, or billing entities within Hoag operate differently or could be considered out of network, despite being part of the same health system and marketed as such. Only after services were rendered did I receive bills indicating that portions of my care were processed as out-of-network, resulting in charges I never would have consented to had accurate information been disclosed in advance. This practice feels intentionally misleading. Patients should not be expected to decipher hidden distinctions between "covered" and "non-covered" facilities or billing entities within the same hospital system--especially when staff affirmatively represent that services are in network. Hoag presents itself as a trusted, patient-centered organization, yet my experience reflected a system more focused on revenue protection than ethical transparency. To be clear: this is not about insurance complexity--this is about being told one thing, relying on that information, and then being billed another way entirely. That crosses a line. Patients deserve honesty, clarity, and full disclosure before care is rendered, not after the bill arrives.
