I've been taking my Golden Retriever to this animal hospital since 2015. Unfortunately Dr Sumpter sold this business several years ago and ever since it's about return on Investment, not the pet. They upcharge you for everything, more blood work, bring the dog in for an exam before a refill on medication (Apoquel) that he has been on for years. When I was a kid our family dog hardly ever went to a vet except for shots, he eat table scraps & kibble, and lived much longer that dogs today. Now it's special diets, pet insurance, and monthly visits to a vet for skin allergies or ear infections, thankfully we love our fur babies. Love this team!! I've been taking my pets to Ladera off and on for years but I've never felt compelled to leave a review until now. My frenchie got into the trash on a Saturday night and by Sunday he was really sick. I was so grateful that my local vet is open 7 days a week. It saved me a trip to the ER and Ladera was able to do all the testing needed to figure out that his dumpster diving had given him pancreatitis. My dog got bit by a bee and I rushed to this hospital as it was the closest hospital to my house. The tech Michelle was so great she took my dog immediately to the back to assess and give him oxygen. I did not have to wait at all. My dogs face was completely swollen and I was worried if we would have waited any longer he could no longer breath. The doctor later spoke to me and they gave him meds and now he's recovering at home. The care the doctor and tech provided was so fast and they seemed to really care about my dog. Our family dog unfortunately came to the end of her road. Ladera Animal hospital were great with the process. They fit us in the same day I called, were extremely caring and made the usually traumatic experience very smooth. They explained the process, gave us time with her and overall could not have been any better. Although not the first concern, the cost was very fair. I couldn't recommend this animal hospital enough. While, yes, it's expensive (what vet isn't nowadays), they are so kind with my reactive, 85 lb. doggie, Lily. I always have so much anxiety going in because I know she will growl and not be easy to work on, but despite that, they always find a way and never make me feel like she is a good girl (and she is)! They are the only people who can trim her nails. And, our girl has a LOT of allergies, and they are very cognizant of her medical history and give her the best care possible. I am so grateful for this team and their kindness. With good pet insurance, this is the place to go if you have a dog like mine who doesn't like strangers and who has a lot of health complications. read more

STAY FAR AWAY. I usually don't leave reviews but this is the worst vet I've ever been to and I gave them three different visits and opportunities to provide quality care. The receptionists are extremely unfriendly and unprofessional and don't even greet you when you walk in. You stand there awkwardly waiting while they giggle amongst themselves. The vet and her high school aged looking assistant were rough with my cat, I could hear other animals wailing in the back the entire appointment and I got a bad feeling. They said they couldn't get a urine sample from my cat because she was dehydrated so they kept poking her multiple times for it. They told us to come back the next day which is hard because she's very dramatic going to the vet but we did and they told us the same thing, that they couldn't get a urine sample. We decided to stop going here and go to a different vet and they couldn't even email over the new vet her (unfinished) bloodwork. They kept putting everyone on hold and didn't make it a priority at all. It's a simple email. Do not bring your animals here - there are better options out there. If you are looking for a vet look here. We took our dogs to Dr Sumptner when she was there and eventually started seeing Dr. mayna. When he opened Sendaro we went there. However after being a loyal client for many years I would not take any pet to Sebdaro. When you call if they are in another line they ask if it's an emergency or can you hold. I've always held because pets and emergencies can't wait. This time it was my turn I called on June 28th because my dog couldn't stand and then began having horrible seizures. When I called I was told I would have to take him to a walk in clinic because they were booked. Imagine if you went to the hospital and the ER said you need to go to urgent care because we're booked. I immediately called Ladera and the only thing they asked was how soon can you get here. When we got there they took my dog in the back to start an IV line then brought him back to me in a room. He continued to have seizures and tried to walk but kept falling and hitting the wall. I told her it was time he had been too good of a pet to let him suffer and put him through a lot of tests when by then it had become obvious he was losing the battle. She asked if I was ready and I said yes. They took me to a clean room since during his seizures he had lost control of his bladder and bowels. They lowered the lights out a thick blanket on the ground and brought my dog in snuggled in another blanket. They showed me a button to push when I was ready and left us. I got down on the floor and he put his head on my leg and I rubbed his head for a little bit. They had given him something to stop the seizures but I knew it wouldn't be long before the next one came. After a while I pushed the button and the doctor came in. She was compassionate and never once rushed me. She asked again if I was sure I was ready and I said I was. I wanted him to stop what he had been going through for well over an hour. Before we left he had gone completely stiff during one of the seizures and fallen over backwards off the couch. It was time. She did what she needed to do and assured me I could stay as long as I wanted. Finally I knew it was time to go. One last kiss in the head and I left. Meanwhile you should know that aside from telling me to take him to a walk in clinic because they were booked I was told they opened at Sendaro at 7:30 the next morning and if I wanted I could drop him off then. To this day not a single phone call from anyone at Sendaro to ask how he was doing or if I still needed to bring him in. Nothing! Do not take your pet there. They have zero compassion for you and your pet. Ladera Ranch is so caring especially at the hardest of times. I had never met this doctor but she treated me as if my pet had been in her care all of his life. read more

Dr. Huang and staff were awesome!! And Dr. Huang was so patient with Jaq as a new patient. She took time to get to know Jaq and make him feel comfortable. We were able to feed our 110lb, 2yr old, German Shepard, puppy ice cream while she gave him 2-shots in the hip, 1 shot in the shoulder, exam him and spray vaccine in his nose. There was no "growl" no head flick back or fearful behavior. Jaq focused on his puppy ice cream and left less fearful of the vet's. So happy we found this place!!! read more

We took him there and they handled him with such kindness and care--the staff was amazing. The Vet was thorough, compassionate, and wise in her diagnosis, testing, and recommendations. They diagnosed and treated his condition. Ultimately we later lost our beloved best friend but their commitment to care ensured his inevitable passing was preceded by very little suffering. I've been coming here on and off for 15 years. While I understand prices increase, $45 for a nail trim?! I had a recheck for my dogs ear infection and asked if we could get a nail trim as well. I have gotten nail trims here many times. They just increased their price to $25 last time I had it done. So didn't expect it to be different. Went to check out and it was $45!! That's ridiculous when I can get it done at my doggy daycare with a dremel for $15. Very unhappy with the service . We been going here for a long time but it went down the hill last year or so . My dog almost died cuz they didn't do enough tests and didn't diagnose him correctly . We even went back to them same day and asked for more tests and they still didn't do it ! The doctor was treating him for ear infection only when he has IVDD and now another emergency vet did neck xray right away and saw a mass in the throat . How do you miss that ?? On top of that after our dog was already in ER fighting for his life they lied straight to us saying the WE denied services which we would never do! I don't ever write reviews, but I had to for this vet hospital. Absolutely the worst vet clinic I have ever been to. From never being greeted when walking into the facility... being told my dog needs to start treatment for anal cancer (2 y/o that needs her anal glands expressed bi-monthly)... boy that was fun... to the absolute classic response to all my questions "we wont know until we run tests" $$$, and lastly, after getting my dog spayed and her continuing to shake for about 3 weeks post surgery to then be told upon bringing her in "I don't know what is wrong with you dog. Here try putting her on sedation medication..." HA... Just an FYI, I purchased her a thunder jacket off amazon that immediately fixed the problem (she was having a hormonal imbalance from the surgery). I'd imagine a Vet would easily be able to come to that conclusion on their own. My gosh, I could continue to list all my events here from my unfortunate 2 & 1/2 years of using them. And BTW, I only ever went in to their office for routine checkups + spaying and post op. What a rollercoaster of uneducated feedback from both Dr. H & Dr. C. I'm sorry, but please, please, please, do not utilize this facility. I went through two doctors at this location and BOTH aren't even a fraction of what my new Vets are like at a new facility. It has been over a year since I have been here. And I was never going to write a review until a friend of mine just told me some recent news... Her dog also was told it had cancer. Went through chemo, and then had to make the decision to get her dogs leg amputated per the same Vet. To then find out post surgery that her dog never had cancer to begin with. I booked with Dr. Sally Huang for an exam and vaccination for one of my foster dogs, Coby. Dr. Huang was very thorough and detailed. She noticed little things about Coby and explained to me in a simple way. Dr. Huang was caring, not just trying to rush me through, and answered all of my questions. Had the worst experience today. I have seven pets that have gone to this vet since they opened in ladera ranch. Have always loved the doctors and so have my pets. Today, the doctor did not connect with my dog and my dog actually snapped at her. She spent a total of 3 minutes with my dog before leaving the room. All I wanted was a prescription renewed, so she listened to her heart and glanced at her eyes. It's when she grabbed her back paw that my dog got agitated. She has bad hips and the doctor saw her struggle to get up when she came in the room. She should have know to be gentle with her back legs. This 3 minute appointment cost me $73, which I get, with inflation, but ugh. Then she told me a needed a $100 test so she could renew her heart worm prescription. Ugh again, but I get it. What I'm upset about most is that she's never met my dog and she renewed the prescription I came in for at half the previous dose. When I questioned this at the front desk, they said she was busy but she would call me back. Instead, hours later the front desk woman called me back to say the doctor cut the mg dose in half because of my dog's weight change. I asked her to check my dogs records to see what that weight change was. She has always been a lean dog and if she has lost weight, I'd like to know and the doctor should probably be concerned. Come to find out my dog actually gained two pounds. I'm not a vet, but how does gaining weight justify cutting the dose in half given the doctor's explanation??? Since it was obvious the doctor was not going to call me back, I told the woman on the phone not to bother asking for another callback, but to please tell her I was very disappointed in my experience today and her bullish;t (yes, I cursed, but later apologized for cursing) explanation. The veterinarians and staff are very friendly, responsive, and compassionate. We adopted a senior dog with a pre-existing health condition and was referred to Ladera Vet by a friend. They are always accommodating with appointments, especially if more urgent. Dr. Huang is excellent. She always provided the options as well as those costs so I could make a decision, and I never felt like she was trying to push unnecessary services for my dog. She accurately diagnosed a condition that usually only a specialist can typically diagnose. I felt that she went above and beyond in her communications with me, and was very caring. In the end, she provided such compassionate care when we had to say goodbye (as did her staff). I would highly recommend them. read more

We had a sick and dying cat that we loved very much. Dr Coins and the staff were so understanding and emphathetic. They did what they could to help but ultimately had to return to put her down.They made calls to family first to help and were very understanding of our emotional trauma. Took my little guy in for a wellness exam and got him all up to date on vaccinations. I also expressed concern for his dental issues and set up an appointment to have a cleaning and some extractions done, Dr. Sumpter was extremely helpful and explained what would be done and why it needed to be done. She was happy to give me an estimate of what the procedure would cost and walked me through each expense, answering any questions I had. A week later I took Malcolm in for his cleaning and had him back home about 5 hours later. All of the staff here are very helpful and friendly, they took the time to explain costs as well as how to administer medication for Malcolm. I was nervous to leave my dog because he's my little baby, but the amount of care and trust from the entire team here is wonderful. Highly recommended! read more

I love this vet! I transferred my pets here from a different vet in the area and I couldn't be happier. My dogs are my and my fiancé's babies and we are very picky about who we trust with our animals. This vet is hands down the best! They are not pushy with pricing, they write up their suggestions in an estimate and let you make the final call. They also help advise on where to cut cost if you aren't able to spend the money on everything they suggest. Overall I have been bringing my pets here for 2 years and I have since then moved out of the area but I make a special trip for my dogs because I trust them! We recently adopted a puppy from a shelter so the next step was finding a vet. I visited 4 local places before settling on Ladera Ranch Animal Hospital. The front desk staff are cheerful and friendly -- to both people and pets. They are also efficient even when "hanging out" and chatting with customers and each other. This creates a nice welcoming atmosphere. The reception area is also bright, clean, and spacious -- it's very easy to separate if visiting animals get nervous or unhappy. There are products on shelves but no upselling. And they do encourage pet insurance and have brochures available -- considering how expensive it can get just with regular health care & vax, insurance is good. Snuggle Pi's first visit was after coming home from the shelter. He had an upset tummy and we wanted to get it sorted quickly. The technicians and vet were all very gentle with him, soothing and calm, which helped him relax quickly. They explained everything (and did so simply) and got him sorted out nicely. Since then my experience has continued to be wonderful. They send out reminder texts and emails for appointments, are easy to schedule with, and (a small yet nice touch) always refer to him by name. Our last visit was routine vax and heartworm check so he went out the back solo. The tech that took him took a moment to let him acclimate before walking him out. She verbally encouraged him rather than tugging him along. When they returned she took the time to reassure me that when he'd become nervous she'd offered him snuggles and he'd settled down immediately. I'm not sure if this is standard, though I think it may be, but we always get the same vet. When booking an appointment I've been told what days Dr. Sumpter's there and Snuggle Pi's appointment is then booked with her. I really like this. Not only does Snuggle Pi see the same person regularly and thus develop a relationship with her, but seeing the same vet each time means she has a developed knowledge of him. Finally, he is eager to go in when we go there. This indicates that he has positive associations with the place and that tells me that they treat him well. read more

We've been taking our black lab here for 10 years. They have always taken great care of her. In August we noticed a lump developing in her shoulder. Dr Coins diagnosed her with a cancerous tumor. He recommended we take our lab to a specialist in Tustin. Their estimate was around $7000. That was too much money for a 10 year old dog. We asked Dr. Coins if he could do the tumor removal and he said yes. He did the surgery and did a great job. He is a true professional and takes a genuine interest in the animals he cares for. Our first time there... had a great experience with the front staff and Dr Coins :) He made us feel so comfortable... Sat on the floor to examine our doggy babies who were very anxious. That was so kind of him! Explained every thing in detail, addressed all our concerns. Both the dogs needed Anesthetic dental cleaning and possible extractions! They gave an upfront lower and higher end estimate. We felt so at ease to leave the dogs the next day in their loving care. If you are looking for a trust worthy, honest and reasonable vet, I highly recommend Dr. Sally Huang at Ladera Ranch Animal Hospital (949) 347-6803. My dog, Monster, is a 14 year old Beagle Mix. About a month ago, she had a knee ACL repair surgery at a Vet in San Diego ( our previous vet). Last Tuesday (July 27th), Monster went from a happy dog (still in recovery but definitely happy) to a not active, not eating, not drinking, not walking, constant shivering, and very much lifeless. Monster crashed within a few hours and was declining fast. We contacted our old Vet and the knee surgeon, they did not provide proper diagnoses on her condition. Due to their busy schedule the earliest appointment we could get was for a week later on Thursday Aug 5th. In the meantime, Monster continues to deteriorate fast and just in a couple of days Monster was barely alive. I called Ladera Ranch Animal Hospital and rushed Monster to meet with Dr. Sally Huang. Dr. Huang ran a few tests and immediately started IV with antibiotics and anti-inflammatory treatments. Dr. Huang took the time to explain Monster's condition to us, provided options and prognosis. We followed Dr. Huang's suggestions. Today when we picked up Monster, She wags her tail for the first time since Tuesday. We came home and she ate a full meal on her own standing!! I can't thank Dr. Huang enough for saving Monster. I do not believe Monster would still be with us if we waited a week taking her in. read more

This is one of the best kept secrets in Ladera Ranch. A true 5 star vet in the middle of dog lover country. I've been taking my pups here for years and absolutely love the care and attention my furry children get. Dr. Sumpter is a true animal lover and even our feisty English Bulldog Brutus loves her and her staff (that's saying a lot). Here's my breakdown: GOOD 1: They love animals. The staff is all amazing and I haven't had even 1 bad experience in all my years of coming here for my vet needs. My pups aren't afraid to come. I had a couple of bad experience at other places before coming here so I appreciate how wonderful they all are. GOOD 2: They're extremely helpful with the various pet insurance forms when needed. I personally have major medical plans for both my pups though VPI and whenever we have covered treatments they fill out and submit the paperwork for me. On occasion I've had covered items denied because of misunderstandings on the medical charts and the doctors were more than happy to jump on a call with VPI to further explain things. It's time out of their busy day to help me and I really appreciate that. On just one occasion alone it was the difference between $300 being covered or out of pocket. GOOD 3: They have great hours. They're open early enough for me to get in before work and late enough for my wife to go after work if needed. BAD 1: This is where I usually put things that need improvement , but in this case I don't have anything to suggest. They're doing a great job at everything they do. Overall.... I love the staff, my doggies love the staff, they provide great services at reasonable prices and it located right by my house.
