We were on our way home from the beach and the my kids' car broke down (on a weekend of course). Found them via yelp review and they were super helpful from the git-go. Helped us connect with a tow truck and then got the car there. Most important, is that they showed concern for my kids who were with the car and were worried for their safety. They directed them to a safe place to wait for the car and the person stayed late until we knew the car was picked up and the kids had been retrieved by a family friend. The repair was done quickly and for an appropriate price. We drove back to Ladysmith to pick up the car and all was good. read more

Driving home from Christmas vacation in our rv , we noticed that the tire pressure sensor on a rear tire was very low. We got off I95 and were lucky to find Ladysmith. They were great at searching for the problem and helped get us back on the road in under and hour. Went there to have them plug a flat tire. The guy didn't know how to do it. Almost 3 hrs later-they figured it out. In the meantime, they broke my tire pressure sensor. They replaced it but it still didn't work. Took it back the next week for them to fix it and do front end alignment. They said no one was trained to used the new alignment machine. When I picked the car up, it had never been moved from the spot I put it in so they never fixed the sensor. Ended up at Goodyear tire. They replaced all four tires and replaced the tire pressure sensor that they said wasn't installed right. I live in a community where people rely on word of mouth for recommendations. Our van had mechanical issues while we were driving North on 95. The shop was able to get us in first thing the following morning. We had already Googled every possible outcome and the diagnostics came back indicating the issue we thought it was. Even though is was New Year's Eve, Danielle and Steve worked hard to get the parts delivered and our van repaired in record time. We were on the road shortly after noon. We were treated with kindness and empathy the entire time we were there. Steve (mechanic) kept us updated throughout the entire process, and Danielle (front desk) made sure we were comfortable and aware of all anticipated costs. DO NOT GO HERE!!! Wanted to charge 5 hours labor for less than 1/2 hour of work!!!! That's the quick story. Story below if you have interest and to see the type of business you should avoid. I will gladly edit anything that is not factual. You have my number. My 22 year old son was driving his 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis from New Jersey to Florida to start his new job. Yes, unfortunately, he is driving a 19 year old car. The car only has 100,000 miles on it, pretty good for 19 years old, but not well taken care of by last owner. Grand Marquis, The car is important. It is a common car. I am sure these mechanics have worked on several of them. My son left New Jersey, Thursday Sept 28 2023 about 7:00pm. 2:00am Sept 29, I get the call...."The car is on fire! There is smoke everywhere!" My son is not very car savvy. I am, I am pretty sure it is the water pump. get towed. Ladysmith Tire and Auto listed on the AAA website and close to the towing company. 8:00 am Ladysmith opens. Informs my son they are too busy to get to his car. My son informs them "my father is pretty handy with cars. "There is a $140 fee to inspect the car." They, before even looking at the car, drive my son to a hotel. (Thanks for the ride, take it out of the $140) and he has to spend $130 for a hotel room. So my son down $270.00 and nothing done with no idea when something can be done. 4:45pm my son calls me, "Dad, don't freak out" 'They want $1200 to fix the car". I call them at 4:49pm. I ask how they come to a price of $1200. I am informed the water pump is $480 parts and labor, i think, Part and 3 hours labor Apparently they don't install the serpentine belt as part of that service. Then I am informed the belt "Shredded" and damaged the belt tensioner, $480 parts and labor. TWO HOURS LABOR!! This is literally ONE 10mm BOLT. I tell them don't touch the car. My son will get it out of there. Call my son, tell him to get the car. He gets an UBER. More money gone. Call AAA towing and bring it to the hotel. I will fix the car.5:22pm Ladysmith Tire and auto calls me, they can do the work for $770.00. I am on my way down. My son will pay your BS $140 and get the car out of there. Parts total $213.20 . Being I can tell the type of shop Ladysmith is... Double the parts total. $426.40 should be the parts charge. So if they were a semi legit business they would have made $213.00 for doing nothing. If they were a good honest shop maybe up charge $100. Here is a Youtube link explaining how to change the water pump. The video is 11 minutes and 39 seconds long. You don't have to watch it but listing it to show exactly how easy it is to change. Normally you would think the video is edited and it has to take much longer than 12 minutes...you would be WRONG! You can actual change this in 10 minutes or LESS. I admit this is very unusual. Job completely done, in a dark hotel parking lot, working by flashlight, About 12 minutes of actual wrenching, rest of time waiting for thermostat to open and cleaning up and checking for leaks and test drive done at exactly 12:00am. Ladysmith, if a legit business, could have made $213 in parts charge and 1 hour labor, not sure exactly their hourly rate guess about $140. $353.00 for less than 1 hour worth of work. Instead Ladysmith chose to take advantage of a 22 year old, out of state driver and try to rape another $700.00 off of him. Not including the $130 for the hotel and my son's wasted time. I really hope this post saves someone from this nightmare. read more

We in for yearly inspection and was told brakes in rear at 3/32 and a front hub needs replacement. They provided estimate for work they said needed to be done. Original rear brakes lasted 119000 miles before I had them replaced less than 32000 miles from same business 3yrs ago. I took vehicle home and took rear brakes off and measured them. They are not even close to 3/32nds. Thinnest was barely under 6/32nds. They must have forgotten that they replaced them in the past. Don't take their word for anything. Verify everything. The estimate for the work they said needed to be done is over 1,000 bucks. The picture are the rear breaks that were on the vehicle and the one along side is a brand new break. Really no difference. They had a sign in sheet for drop off, so I was able to have the car diagnosed the following day. Unfortunately, the car was discovered to have a dead engine. Mechanic quickly took a look and told us to have it towed to Hyundai as it would be under warranty. They let us camp out in the waiting area - dog and all while we waited for a ride. While driving from NJ to FL for the winter, our van broke down on I-95 in Virginia. We limped it off the highway and called AAA, and since we didn't know the area, the towing company recommended Ladysmith Tire & Auto. Even though we arrived at Ladysmith close to closing time, they assessed the problem and lent us their work van to get to a nearby hotel. The manager even gave us his cellphone number in case we had any further problems that night. Not only did they fix our broken cam shaft (which had been caused by our mechanic in NJ overtightening a screw), but the mechanic stayed late so that we would be able to get back on the road sooner, and they tested it "like Mario Andretti stole it." The price was fair, everyone was friendly, efficient and knowledgeable, and the van is now finally running properly. I highly recommend Ladysmith Tire & Auto. read more

Just left Ladysmith Tire & Auto where I got an oil change, synthetic oil. I will never go back again. Nice people but outrageous prices. I was charged $94.11 for a synthetic oil change. Never have I ever paid that much, so before I wrote this I did some checking and found other places and their prices of the same thing. Meinike $69.55, Walmart $49.88, Jiffy Lube $79.99. I should have taken the drive to any of these but since Ladysmith Tire & Auto was more local to me, I figured I would try it. Well I did, and NEVER AGAIN. Just a warning for all you folks. read more

This place saved me on a Friday evening. My minivan had overheated on I95 traveling south. We had just put over $2000 in repairs into this low mileage 2007 mini van. I managed to get off the highway and stumbled upon Ladysmith Auto. I first met with Lisa who works Nextdoor at the ANYTIME TOWING service. She was so kind. I had a potential disaster and she helped me navigate the simple process. I was frustrated, mad, and afraid . Lisa, welcomed me and my puppy to stay in her office for the 3 hour wait I had until my daughter arrived. Next morning I spoke with Mike from the auto shop who explained what had gone wrong with the repairs done earlier and my cost, which we considered fair. Once I arrived I met with Danielle who highlighted the issues and assured me the process had been repaired properly. She told me to call her with any problems and encouraged me to inform the shop who did the original work of this problem. I then met Steve the mechanic (who worked on my car and has been a mechanic for 40 yrs). I got his view on this problem. His words... sloppy work. Steve, Lisa and I stood around and chatted for a while and I felt like I had made two new friends. If your in need of towing or car services and your in this area or traveling up or down I95 north of Richmond Va. make an effort to use these two businesses. My 14 year old daughter and I were traveling up to CT for my father in law's funeral. My clutch went out while pulling into the Ladysmith rest stop. AAA suggested I get towed to this place. The next day I discovered I needed a new clutch (not a surprise) but the price was about $500 more than it should have been. They knew I was headed up north for a funeral and said they'd try to fix it ASAP. Well, they ordered the wrong clutch kit and told me I also needed a new flywheel. Close to 4 grand to repair everything. Their web site says that they have a "free customer service courtesy shuttle" if you are within 10 miles. My car was ready at 4:45 on Wednesday, but they had no one to give me a ride until the next morning. Of course I couldn't get an Uber or a taxi before closing time, so my daughter and I were forced to spend a 4th night at a motel in the middle of nowhere. Stay away from this place, especially if you are a female from out of state. read more

I broke down on 95 and had my truck towed here. They diagnosed my truck as having a bad diesel injector pump with a cracked housing. They wanted over $2,700 to replace this part. I bought the pump for $900 and replaced it myself in the parking lot, at night, limited tools, 20 degrees out in two hours. The pump was not even bad. The housing comes apart and five of the six screws holding the housing together were missing. DO NOT GO TO THIS SHOP EVER!!!! read more

Unplanned visit! I was driving from NC to NJ to attend a wake for a friend. The cherry on top of the day was when my tire EXPLODED on I95 about 8 miles from Ladysmith, VA. I DON"T KNOW LADYSMITH VA. I was resigned to the fact that I was probably going to be ripped off, and also probably not going to make it to NJ in time for the wake. I could not have been more wrong. The staff was wonderful, friendly, and compassionate. They needed to get the tire from another shop, and STILL had me in and out in 1 hour and 10 minutes. We were towed here after our car broke down on I-95 in freezing wintry conditions early one morning January 2014. AAA arranged the tow, and the tow dispatcher explained that the repair service was offered by the next-door repair shop. While we were waiting for the tow, she checked with the manager and verified that the shop could investigate the malfunction right away. The Xpress staff were very courteous and they began working on the car as soon as we arrived. The shop was orderly and clean. It took them about 75 minutes to perform the diagnostics - a bit longer than I'm accustomed to. But they recommended three repairs, two critical and one that would need to be addressed eventually. I elected to have all three done. The manager estimated it would take about three hours to complete the repairs, including getting in a part. It took about five hours, in part because the mechanic had difficulty with a stubborn part in a difficult position. The waiting area was initially very cold, but the manager figured out how to get the heat on.We walked across the road to McDonalds for a meal, and there was also a snack shop at the gas station nearby. I can't attest to whether the repairs were priced fairly, as I haven't been able to find a comparison online, but I do believe the manager and mechanics are honest. Since we were about an hour from home and no easy way to get there, and there was no hotel within walking distance, I appreciated that we were able to drive away at 2pm and get home before dark. read more

So, my car's battery light started coming on intermittently on I-95, which lead me to this shop. It's conveniently located right off the highway. The bottom line is that the shop did good work in a timely manner. They were friendly and the waiting room was pretty clean for an auto shop. That being said, they are VERY pricey. As I waited there, however, you see how much traffic they get off of issues on I-95, so I can't really blame them for cashing in. So, to my issue. I knew going in that an intermittent battery light was probably the alternator or battery. Both very easy to check. Beyond that, the issue could get ugly (short, something in the electrical system, etc.) They charge a $90 diagnostic fee that is NOT waived even if you have the work done there. So, that was up charge number 1. The issue was confirmed to be the alternator. The quote was high, but what is an I-95 motorist to do. The parts cost was literally $100 above the web site cost from Advanced for the identical part (I'll cut them a little slack and assume there is a delivery fee, but not $100). They charged $100 in labor for a 30 minute job. There's a $25 environmental/supply fee, for something that is bolted on and is not only recyclable, an alternator has to be recycled or you pay an added core fee (like a battery). Total cost was about $50 over the high end estimated on RepairPal. So, all told, this was a VERY expensive repair, but they did get me back on the road. For that, they get 3 stars. Would I trust them to repair my car again, yes, I have no complaints with the work. Would I go there if I have another choice, no, the cost is prohibitive. read more

My wife broke down in on 95 at one day, we had our vehicle taken to this shop to have it repaired. Paid 1519.41 to have the rack and pinion steering assembly replaced as well as a new pump put in. I paid them the money and my wife picked up the vehicle. Upon pick up (which was after hours) and driving home the steering was way out of wack (pulling to the right severily) and had an extremely bad wobble at any speed over 55mph. What a Horrible shop, now I have am sure I will have to take them to court in order to get any of my money back. STAY AWAY SAVE YOUR MONEY DO NOT GO HERE!!! read more

I've been to this shop 3 times in 3 days and have finally given up. The first day, ok. You have a wait on inspections right before 2:00. Alright. Come tomorrow at 8 a.m.? Cool. The second day, 8:20. 3 people in front of me and they have a two hour wait as well. WTF. I walk out. Today. The third day. I walk in, the guy sitting at the desk looks dead at me. Someone else is in front talking to him so I wait patiently. Couple minutes go by, still talking about some race they were in. 5+ minutes and they're still chatting like old housewives. Another guy comes in and interrupts them to ask a question. Gets his answer and he's out. Back to ignoring me. I smile, and walk out again. This place has the worst, most despicable customer service and if I didn't have to give at least one star I swear you wouldn't have one. I will gladly pass by your shop to go anywhere else from now on. And as much as people need jobs in this economy, I hope the guy that ignored me, instead of taking fifteen seconds to answer my question, gets fired. The staff was knowledgeable and accommodating while they made arrangements with local part suppliers and their amazing mechanics to make the necessary repairs to my car same day at a very reasonable price. The office and shop managers, Danielle and Curtis were phenomenal at explaining what was needed and assuring me that they would be able to get it done! As soon as we got off of 95 we see this tire shop and think how lucky we are. Well we were wrong. First off the girl at the desk is extremely ignorant to people. Second off they told us we need a new tire because ours isn't repairable when really it was. So we say how much for a new tire. We get quoted a price that is almost double. She then proceeds to tell us if we are using a debit card it will also be an addition 4%. To make matters worse when we refused to pay their outrageous price for a tire they charged over $50 to put our spare on. This place is taking advantage of stranded motorist on I-95. read more

No games or price gouging, just great customer service.
