I have an '86 560SL and a '98 S420 Mercedes and Jerry keeps them going. He knows Mercedes like no one else, and I've owned a Mercedes for over 20 years. His prices are honest and reasonable compared to the MANY other mechanics I've used for my Mercs. His neat and tidy shop is conveniently located in Lafayette, about a 10-15 minute walk from the BART station. There is no substitution for experience. All the guys in the shop are great and they've pulled my cars back from the brink many times over the years. They always explain what the problem is and show you exactly what they're going to be doing. I've learned a lot about cars from them. Before I found Jerry and Santiago, I was on the verge of getting rid of my cars because they were too expensive to maintain and were breaking down all the time and I felt like a fool. Prices seem higher than other shops. After I picked up my car, I called other shops on Yelp with high ratings and asked for estimates without telling them anything had been done. Estimates from other shops were 20-30% lower than what I paid Lafayette Motors for the same work. Also, two shops advised that the repairs I listed was extensive and replacement of certain parts was probably unnecessary, so I should reconsider whether or not I wanted them to perform all that work. It's possible shops give you a lower estimate to get your business, but in my experience, good places do not deviate from the estimate by much, if at all, when it's time to pay. The best indie mechanics have never charged me more than the estimate, even if it took them longer. Also, repairs took longer than what I've experienced with other mechanics. Maybe there is a parts supply issue, longer time required to diagnose the problem, or longer time required to perform the job. I've had better value and work elsewhere. I struggle to find any reason to return with my business. read more

This placed was highly recommended, Jerry helped with my car's repair last year every went ok , but recently I brought my car again to check engine light this time Santiago helped me he was very nice until I decide not to do the repair at his shop because my car's warranty would cover for the repair at the dealer, Santiago then charged $180 for checking the source of the problem he actually told me over the phone that He was not charging for the diagnostic since they had worked on my car in the past. I am not against paying a fee but He should've said something since the beginning, He charged close to what the dealer charges. My opinion Santiago was a little dishonest and overcharged for the service provided. read more

I own a 2002 Jaguar XK8 coupe. I purchased the car in 2012 and have had the car serviced there exclusively after examining a few other shops in the East Bay. I have owned sports cars for 40 years and and can evaluate a good mechanic quickly. Carlos Caicedo is a master mechanic who is technically proficient and very experienced. He diagnoses issues correctly and explains the method by which he will proceed with a repair. All costs are clearly identified so as to avoid unpleasant surprises. The repairs are done correctly and quickly. Equally important is that he is honest and does not try to upsell unnecessary work. Finally, if a mechanical issue arises occasionally Carlos is ready to answer the phone and provide his expertise to solve the problem.
