I first started seeing him when I moved to the west side of Manhattan, where he was working at a salon near Hudson and Charles Street. When I later moved back to Brooklyn, I tried a few local spots but ultimately decided it was worth the trek to the West Village to have my difficult, curly hair managed by Roberto. Not only does he consistently deliver the exact haircut I'm looking for, but he also does it with speed and efficiency every single time. UPDATE: Pulsd refunded my money. They said it was probably a one-time honest mistake from the salon. Blowout was supposed to be included. FYI - bought Pulsd for $59 For A Haircut, Blow Out, and Style at LAICALE SoHo Salon (a $155 value) and was still charged $63 more at the end for the "blowout" without any advanced notice. I liked the result -- granted it was a simple single process black color to cover up my greys -- so I didn't mind paying but it would have been nice if it was all clear and upfront from the beginning. The title was misleading and inaccurate = false advertising. Stylist was nice but didn't even offer me water or anything. I was so thirsty I had to ask for water at the end. read more

This is a place that I always go back to. The amount of effort and precision is amazing with the cuts. When I had it cut very short once I had to watch my stylist Fabrizio and take note of what products he used so I could replicate the look. My beaux said that he always makes my hair look so slick ! Even when I was at a Brooklyn bagel shop in Queens and my hair was really long, a man asked me who cut my hair - I just generally just said some place in Manhattan and he said he knew a lot of the places because he cut/styled hair too - so of course I said it was Fabrizio at Laicale and he said he did a great job! I love that they offer tea while there - the staff is so attentive and polite. If your new to the place and similar places in Manhattan, just take more of how the services are broken down and the prices so you are aware...it's not like it was in Queens in the mid 90s. I just want to say I was not disappointed at all. I loved how my hair came out. I finally found my person and place. Annabel was truly amazing and attentive to what it was that I was looking for. She listened and was also on the same page as me for a natural and subtle highlighted look. As stated in my prior review, I started coming to Laicale because my stylist moved here. While he's moved on to another salon, I stayed with Laicale. The music and atmosphere are soothing - don't be surprised if you start snoozing at the shampoo station. Yes, it's Soho pricing but it's also consistently high-quality. Takako somehow puts up with my distinct lack of style and low-maintenance habits. She works her magic so that my hair looks fine despite my inability! read more

UPDATE: adding some stars because when I contacted the salon (3 weeks after my appointment when I felt the color still wasn't settling in) they were responsive and very kind about refunding me. So their customer service, aside from my experience with my stylist, has been very good and caring. I wanted a corrective color. I was blue and she said she could get me to dirty blonde and I was fine with that, thinking I'd come back in 4-6 months to go lighter blonde. I knew this would be a process. I wasn't expecting my blonde to be back in one session even. Little did I know I wouldn't be close to dirty blonde after three hours in the chair with Noemi. Also, reflecting now and seeing what others in this situation had to do time wise, for her to put in three hours feels rushed and like she didn't actually care at all what my end result would be. I'll preface by saying I have thin hair but I use what I've been told are high quality and good products in my hair regularly - olaplex 3 through 9 (including shampoo and conditioner), it's a ten miracle leave in conditioner, chi heat protectant spray, oribe hair oil, etc. I'd been blue for 7 months, touching it up myself at home with manic panic every 4-6 weeks or so (although my initial dye from blonde to blue was done in a salon- not Laicale). I'd lost SOME length but after this episode with Noemi at Laicale My hair was the shortest it's been in my life. She didn't cut it so I assume it broke off but she said she was using products to heal my hair and I walked away with it shorter than it's ever been. She started by saying she'd get me to dirty blonde. She first tried to get all the blue out of my hair. She was optimistic and at one point even said she wished she could show a colleague because she was amazed at how much of the blue she got out. I think she used the word transformation but I can't remember. At the time I was feeling optimistic given her response. She then suggested a milbon hair treatment. I asked some questions to understand what that would do and when she said it would help keep the hair healthy, I agreed. After the treatment she asked if I wanted a blowout or regular dry and I opted for a regular dry because I didn't want to pay more money on top of the $600 for a styled blow out. When she was done I was shocked. In utter disbelief. I thought to myself "she can't be done." My roots were orange. My hair below the roots was grey/green. I asked her "what would you call this color?" She hesitated. I said "it's orange grey green" and she said "yeah" ... not quite the "dirty blonde" she kept saying she was aiming for. I stared at the mirror in disbelief and she could tell I was upset. She urged me to step outside so I could see the color outside in natural light. It was raining and gloomy (how fitting) but I obliged. She handed me a mirror on the sidewalk and nothing felt better when seeing it in the "natural light". I came back inside and she said I couldn't touch it for atleast three months. I said I couldn't leave the salon like this as I have a job, work trips, etc. and her attitude immediately changed. She wasn't trying to help anymore, she seemed dismissive. She explained she could put a toner (I think it was a toner) on the roots to closer match the colors and bring me to brunette. I took that option because what other option did I have? She returned with the toner and quickly threw it on my roots (she had another client arrive at the tail end of my tragedy) and then she rinsed, blow dried and dismissed me rather quickly. She said she could try for blonde again in February. When I asked "so you want me to come back in three months and try again and you'll charge another 600 then, right?" She said yes with little remorse. She said she'd "speak to her manager" but I didn't feel any reassurance. She later texted to say my next gloss, which I could do in 2-3 weeks, would be "on her" ... at the time I said thanks, I appreciate it and I'd check in in a few weeks once I'd settled into the color. Few weeks later I don't intend to get s gloss at Laicale. A professional salon gloss treatment is typically 50-100. A store bought kit is 10-30. I appreciated the gesture when I got the text but the more I think about it now the more I am insulted by it. I would gladly pay another salon $100 to avoid having to go through trauma with Noemi again. I wouldn't trust her again with my hair in a million lifetimes. I knew going from blue to blonde wouldn't be easy. I knew it would be a process. That's why I started the process an entire 6 months before I was hoping to be blonde. I didn't think choosing a high end salon in soho would leave me out $600, traumatized and with the worst hair I've ever had in my entire life. I am PRAYING to the hair gods and universe that I can get back to blonde with length that is even a little beneath my shoulder in six months as I get married this summer, but I'm terrified that won't even be possible. read more

Laicale is a great salon, home to some amazing talent. Austin Burns is hands down one of the best colorists and stylists in the city. To put it briefly, Austin has absolutely insane talent. He has been taking care of my hair for over 5 years, and I would never want to see anybody else. I have been through the full spectrum with Austin as far as color is concerned, from bright blonde, full highlights and balayage to a dark single process. No matter what I have done to my hair, I am always complimented on the color and style. Despite the processing, my hair has never looked dry or brittle. Austin is not hard on my hair, and he makes sure that any damage from processing is balanced out with phenomenal products and a perfect trim. At this point, I let Austin do as he wishes with my hair; he has my trust. He knows what is in style, and he is always up to date on the latest coloring techniques. I used to always feel anxious in previous salons with other colorists. Noemi is THE BEST at cut and color. I spent years getting a haircut that was just okay, asking for angles where I didn't really know the terminology for what I had in my head. Noemi knew what I wanted from a few hand motions of mine, and gave me the cut color and bangs of my dreams. I'm skeptical, but optimistic. So it's not like I typically focus on the negativities in life. I hesitated before tainting the thus-far-5-star-rating but my experience at Laicale leans too far towards the :( side. So here it goes. I got a very drastic cut. My hair has always been long, wavy (permed), feminine. I decided to lash out and get a Twiggy-inspired quasi-pixie cut. My stylist was having fun with this makeover but as soon as she saw her next appointment walk through the door, she started to hurry through the rest of my cut. This was no cut to be taken go-lightly! My life was in her hands! She razored the back of hair too short all of a sudden, the left and right sides were not symmetrical, and when I pointed out the details I wanted polished, she was frustrated and impatient. It is not my fault that her next clients were here, or that my hair cut was taking her longer than desired. In the end, I did get a good cut and I've been complimented on it left and right. However, to get that final result I had to force feed a tear-chokin baby. The experience made it a no-go in the future. SIMONE SIMONE SIMONE!!! Simone is absolutely amazing! I used to work near Lacaile and would always walk past the salon. It's in a great location and always looks so chic from the outside. My mom was coming into town and I knew she needed a great cut and style. I surprised her with an appointment at Lacaile. We found a style online and thought we would try the age old game of hoping the actual cut would come out like the picture. Immediately after my mom was finished with her shampoo and condition Simone came over to greet us. She was extremely warm and friendly, but most of all SHE LISTENED. She was super engaging and excited to get started. Not only can she hold a great conversation, but she explained every step to my mom just to make sure she stayed comfortable. Simone was very detailed, but didn't waste any time. Throughout the entire cut it was like she was truly creating something special. After she finished the cut and style both my mom and I were floored. IT LOOKED EXACTLY LIKE THE PICTURE! Both of us were completely amazed and 100% satisfied. I wish I could go into all of the amazing details, but I think that anyone who is looking for a change needs to visit Lacaile. If you're lucky, you'll get Simone. I have had more than one bad haircut in the city. I have had several mediocre ones as well. Since I had my first haircut with Takako about 3 years ago, I will not go anywhere else. I have curly hair that I usually wear straight. The way she cuts my hair, it always looks good both ways. She listens to what you ask for, makes suggestions and always does what's best for you. One time when I was there the lady who washed my hair told me she thinks Takako does the best layers (of all the stylists there). I also love Laicale in general - totally unpretentious and relaxed. My stylist told me they have all kinds of models come in for haircuts including Brooke Sheild and singer Tia (?). I think they did something for America's Next Top Model too. I was 15 minutes late for my appointment due to a meeting but they didn't mind at all. Had my hair blow dry by Alex, who was super nice. Hair came out pretty good. Had my own little corner away from the rest of the salon where he worked his magic. I think I drifted off to sleep midway. Just started going to this salon because my longtime stylist Kevyn moved here from another salon. So far I'm enjoying it! The decor is very contemporary and clean. The staff is young and hip (I'm not hip but aspire to be). High quality shampoos and conditioners. And they have their own line of products, which I may test out soon. I also love that they do bang trims for free in between haircuts. The location is great too. Gives me a good excuse to go shopping in Soho after my hair appointment! Kevyn is the best! I go to Sarah; and have been going there for 2 years - It was more expensive than I had been used to paying, but once you get a haircut that is an experience from beginning to end, the money becomes less of a big deal. An excellent haircut looks good even when it is grown out - so I go a little less than I might for a less expensive cut. I have long wavy asian hair, and have run across quite a few stylists that are intimidated by it (it surprises me alot too!), but Sarah knew exactly what to do - she's so lovely - she's a beautiful Italian woman of few words and a striking Modigliani look. We spoke a bit and she just started. Somehow, she was able to tame my mane, but give it more wave at the same time...! There is a range of types of stylists as well as patrons here. There are alot of men who get their hair cut here! And fairly conservative looking men too - I often think to myself "why would you spend this much money to get an inch lopped off your basic short cut?" However, I think they really enjoy the experience that Laicale provides. They are hip without being over the top. I have also had an amazing highlight job put in that simulated beach hair - i mean lots and lots of tiny strands of warm blonde in my black hair that managed to look natural. During my sophomore year of college, I decided to experiment with different hair colors and found a shade that I really liked. However, the roots were growing out and I knew maintenance at college would be impossible if I dyed it again. I really had no idea what to do so I decided to receive a consultation at Laicale before coloring it. I had Takako as my colorist and some tall, curly haired, olive skinned guy as her assistant. There were several things I absolutely LOVED about the place, and some things that I got really irritated at. After weighing the pros and cons... this is what I came up with. First i'll talk about the good thing: 1. Takako is an amazing, sweet, charming person. She looks super frail but she works like a beast. She made the perfect compromise on how to color my hair and I adore my hair color. It's been about a month since I got it colored and the roots are growing out really nicely. The color's lighter than my natural hair color, but dark enough to blend in with my roots. The color's even, and did I mention she's like the nicest person ever? If you're looking for someone who's a perfectionist when it comes to her job, you should really ask for Takako. She makes sure you're satisfied to the very end. Having said that, there are things I also REALLY disliked about the place. 1. The person who really annoyed me was Takako's assistant. He seemed nice at first, but then he ended up being really rude. He washed my hair... but left soap in my ears, around my neck, and the water went all over the back of my shirt. He rushes through everything, so he didn't really check to see if the color set or anything... thank God Takako is a perfectionist. She had to interfere a couple of times... again when: 2. So apparently at Laicale, if you color your hair, they don't dry it for you after they wash your hair. They have a bunch of products that people in the past have used (ew gross/unsanitary) so that you can selfdry and style your hair. Once again, thank you Takako for deciding to blowdry my hair in order to check that the color went on evenly. 3. Oh and speaking of the products, Laicale uses their own line that smells like a musky-type of coconut. I hate it. It makes your hair greasy for days no matter how much you wash it, and the coconut smell won't go away. It might be good if you like that soft, glossy, coconut-scented look, but in my case, it was a big no-no. Hope this helps people. read more

I love Laicale. I think I started seeing Fabrizio for haircuts, at least 10 years ago... (Wow) And shortly after Emiliano joined the team, I began seeing him for my color. In a past life I worked for Toni and Guy... As a Salon Coordinator. That experience gives me a keen awareness about all things required to provide a seamless experience for the client. In all my visits to Laicale, I have NEVER been made to wait. I have never been made aware of scheduling "issues",or my stylists being overwhelmed, or double booked, or any other kind of "drama". Truly, this alone is an incredible example of the professionalism and care that is taken by everyone on the team. But it is not the only thing.... I enjoy the familiar faces, and that everyone greets me by name. I am able to "chat" if I wish, or sit in the chair and work, or just be quiet. I am never bothered, and am always comfortable. I am constantly impressed and pleased with the results of my appointments...and am regularly asked by strangers, "who does your hair?" I always respond accordingly and even give directions, or write it down when I can.... I am honestly completely smitten. :) read more

I just got my hair cut by Takako last week and it was great! I walked in, told her I needed help updating my look and she was immediately able to recommend and then cut my hair to look awesome. It looked amazing right after she finished, and although I'm slightly frustrated that I can't quite restyle my hair exactly the way it was that day, it still looks great no matter what...and in my experience that is not always the case. I like the atmosphere at the salon as well. It was hip but not intimidating and everyone was nice. As a warning, they have a "cash only tips" policy which seems to be the norm these days. read more

Yes, Laicale is expensive (haircuts start at $75). And yes Laicale is worth it. I can't really afford to go here for trims, but I wouldn't go anywhere else for hairCUTS. I've seen Sara maybe five times and everytime I walk out thinking how amazing she is, and I always get a bunch of compliments after she's cut it. The best thing about her is that she has an innate sense of style. She is great at making suggestions for what you can (and cannot, based on your hair type, face, etc.) do, and will help you come up with a hairstyle that works for you that matches whatever look you are going for. I am very picky about my haircuts and am in a visual field so I want all the details to be perfect, and everytime I see her, Sara surpasses my expectations and gives me a haircut that is better than anything I could have envisioned myself. I trust her completely, which is saying a lot. The salon itself/in general doesn't quite live up to the high standards to which I now hold Sara, but it's certainly not problemmatic in anyway. The staff is nice, and they offer you tea/cookies/etc, but it does have a bit of a too slick downtown factory circa 1999 feel to it for my tastes. But provided I feel comfortable in a salon, I am willing to listen to a little bad house music if I am going to get a fabulous cut. I've never been to anyone else there, but and I do think that Sara is probably slightly better than some other stylists, but it seems like everyone who goes there is very happy with their haircut. Another plus is that they seem to do a very wide range of styles -- from more conservative uptown goes downtown long and staight looks to more messy, deconstructed looks. I am never going to trust anyone else but Laicale Salon. I have been going here for over 3 years. And I always request for Takako. I have really thick hair and she takes the time to make it look gorgeous. The cut and the blow out/curling iron finishes are amazing. Takako is my go to here after being recommended by my boss. 4 years ago, I told my boss her hair cut looks amazing and [expensive!] and she told me to go check out this place. I have never been happier. Just make sure to book at least a week prior to your requested date.. they fill up pretty quickly. I wanted to come in today, if not I was going to come this Saturday but she's all booked. I'll try to schedule something pretty soon. Tip your shampoo guys well along with your hairdressers!
