The shop is filled with happy professionals who you can tell are appreciated at work! They even offer wine!!!!!!!! Wine plus a quick touch by Van is simply a perfect pair!! When I first started going to Van I was trying to get my hair to grow and did a big cop...cutting all my hair off and starting all over...with Van's weaves he certainly made the transition a smooth and comfortable one! Van works magic with his weaves...& he's always consistent...After experiencing his weaves, I wouldn't dare try anyone else :))) & now that my hair is back like I never even cut it, just more healthy and full & I owe it all to Van!! I searched and searched for a salon that was black owned, that specializes in color, natural hair, using quality products and advocates for natural hair. It took awhile to get an appointment, but it was well worth the wait! I had years of black box color in my hair, and was apprehensive about coloring for fear of damaging my hair and losing my curl pattern that took me years to obtain. Because of the box color, I wasn't sure how light my hair would even get, but I trusted Jamal's creativity and expertise. We had some challenges with lifting, but Jamal was able to pivot and pull it off! He over exceeded my expectations and honestly brought a sister back to life!! His assistant was a beautiful spirit and bomb at her craft! The salon was clean and cozy and peaceful! Parking was a little challenging, but that's DC life ‍. I love this salon! Lamaj in the City is a black-owned business in the heart of DC, near U St. NW (and minutes from Shaw-Howard Metro Station). I have been a client of Jamal's since 2006. He now owns a salon in Capitol Heights, MD, called Salon Lamaj as well as Lamaj in the City. I prefer the DC salon just because I work in DC and spend most of my time there. Most recently, I made an appointment to get a haircut, as my hair had heat damage. One of the things that I noticed is that Jamal (and the other stylists too) at Lamaj in the City pay attention to the health of your hair, and will advise you on what you can do to better address any breakage or other hair problems you may have. I appreciate that extra effort because it demonstrates that the stylists are passionate about what they do, and ultimately, they care about their customers. Ok so back to my appointment (LOL). My hair is natural (I do not have a relaxer/texturizer/keratin treatment), and I received a wash, conditioning treatment, haircut, and style. I left with a sleek bob. I really love it! This review is for Jamal and the business since Jamal is the owner of the salon and the stylist I booked. Jamal was clearly overbooked. I arrived to my appointment on time only to be told where to sit and wait. I waited and watched 3 other clients rotate in his chair. After nearly an hour I walked out. My time is valuable and stylist who deliberately overbook clearly do not value their clients' time. This is common at black salons and it is highly unacceptable! When this salon opened up in my neighborhood I was super excited! I had been to the Maryland location and had a good experience but this one was closer! So I made an appointment online. Jamal is the best! I did have to call instead of booking him online but it was worth the extra steps. He is everything a girl could ask for in a stylist. The salon has only been open a few years and already they've remodeled it! I swear it looks like something out of NYC or LA! Top notch stylist we're already working there and now the furniture and salon look matches. You've got to see it for yourself! The salon is small but I like that cause I get the attention from the time I walk in. It's very personal and everyone is so nice. My haircut is always fresh and cutting edge without being too trendy. That's what I love about them. I only go to Jamal but I've been there for a while and I see the other senior stylist catrice's work too. She's really good. Her clients always leave so happy. I had been maintaining my own locked hair for ten years and after a recent big chop and transition to relaxer,I've been hopping from independent stylists via style seat with mixed and often Unsatisfying results. I realized what I needed was a salon home. I'm paying the same money but with a salon I figured the experience would be elevated and dependable, right? Correct. So, I searched for a Black owned salon in DC where I could get great hair care and styling and in a salon setting with great customer service. After an extensive search (question: how many black own salon/spas are left in the city?) I found Lamaj, which is a Mizani salon.The salon itself is a beautiful new space. I booked the short sassy special (wash cut and heat styling -$120) and enjoyed the whole experience. My stylist Brooke was young,but was so professional and consulted with me and greeted me warmly. This is important to me and often hair professionals overlook this aspect. She's also a great young talent. My typical service is a relaxer and a pixie cut. Jamal listens and really tries to please. He uses his shears as an instrument of precision and always makes my hair look great! He also has a really great personality (which is refreshing). It's a plus that you can schedule online. You will not be in this salon all day-- you are in and out within a reasonable time period. He has an assistant (Mercedes) that does any shampooing or relaxers and she does a great job too. The salon is in a very cool part of Shaw. I don't know of any specific parking so, I just take Uber to the salon. Overall- it's a really good experience. read more

I received services from this salon by Shayla on 2 occasions. The service was pleasant and I decided to become a regular client. I made an appointment with Shayla to which she sent me a message asking me to change my appointment because she had a photo shoot. I then cancelled because of a conflict with my schedule. Even after this instance, I decided to make another appointment with Shayla. She sent me a message the morning of the appointment saying she was looking at the wrong date and had to move my appointment back an hr and half. I confirmed and made the appropriate adjustments to my schedule. However, later that afternoon at 2:00 for an appointment scheduled at 4:30, Shayla asked me to come another day because her client's service was taking longer than expected. I then once again cancelled. I will no longer be receiving services from this salon due to the unpredictable nature of the appointment system and consistent errors in viewing the calendar along with recognizing client services ahead of time in order to avoid such instances as the aforementioned. First visit to this salon was fab! Lets start with the parking directly out front curb side is free!!! If you know Dc at all parking is terrible & you have to feed the meters. I give this place no star. Catrice totally and completely messed my haircut up. I showed her exactly what I wanted and walked out so disappointed. I asked 4 finger coils and walked out with NOTHING I asked for and she overcharged me because I HATED my haircut completely. I will never go back. My haircut look like a buzz cut..... smh. There is no fixing this. I'm going to have to cut all my hair down because of her. I think she should give me back my 150. Yes ppl she charged me 150 for a buzz cut. Van has been my stylist for over 6 years. He is amazing and has my weave looking so natural that people are often unsure if it's my hair or not :-) But not only weaves, Van is the King at natural hair maintenance. Ladies he won't disappoint you. I'm sooo happy that Van is with Lamaj in the City! From my first visit to my now 50th+ visit to the salon each experience has been amazing. I wish I could give zero stars. Van was incredibly rude for no apparent reason. He needed to grab breakfast and eat in the middle of my appointment and I had no issue with it. Near the end of my appointment, he asked if I wanted my weave straightened or curled. I wanted the original curls the hair came with, which was the whole point of me buying it. But when I looked in the mirror, he had combed and flat-ironed them out. I was horrified and tried to decide what to do instead. He raised his voice at me, telling me to hurry because he had another client waiting. I don't think it's unreasonable to take a second or two to think through a decision especially considering I had given him 20 minutes to eat, and considering it was his screw-up. This is just one example. He has previously made rude comments about my hair choices, not the way a client and stylist normally talk, but in very condescending manner. I complained to the owner Jamal, and the solution they came up with was for me to return to the salon and have the style washed out of my hair. Gee, thanks, but the problem is they stylist's attitude. I really don't want anything to do with this horrible person so why would I have him do my hair again? Booked an appointment with the owner Jamal. Heard a lot about what an accomplished stylist he was so I booked a blow out and trim as a trial run to see if this was a suitable place for me to return to regularly and for me to refer my friends to. NEVER WOULD I RECOMMEND THIS PLACE!!!!!!!! First of all, the shop has a policy about clients being late and or cancelling appointments less than 48 hours in advance, policy states a fee will be imposed for either infraction. My thoughts were "wow, my time is going to be valued here since they are so strict with timeliness"...WRONG! Appointment began late, and that was just to get my hair washed by someone else (not Jamal). Let me also state I booked an 8am appointment to avoid the "it got busy and I got behind" that stylist always hit you with. Oh and also, another fave moment was when there were women who walked in AFTER ME who's hair was washed BEFORE ME. Additionally Jamal was OVER AN HOUR late for the appointment. As a business owner, how are you going to threaten your own clients with late fees and then you are late yourself? CAUTION; the individuals who work here are less than friendly unless they "know you". This observation was made by me when I saw that every lady had been offered a beverage, except for me. I am not that pressed for a mimosa but if you are going to offer that to your clients, shouldn't everyone have the chance to decline? DO THEY EVEN KNOW THE SERVICES THEY OFFER? I asked for a blow out and trim, the woman who basically did the majority of the work on my hair (again not the stylist I booked) proceeded to brush my hair with flat brush and blow dryer. I have had a million blow outs in my life so needless to say I knew that was not actually how one gains a bouncy voluminous blow out. After she dried my hair straight, she proceeds to use the flat iron. Again, a never seen before technique for this one of a kind "blow out". When Jamal finally arrived, he was on the phone and interested in every one else except for me, his client, who had been waiting over an hour for him to arrive. I explained to him the style I had booked and basically insinuated that it was overcome by events since I had essentially gone through the procedures of a silk press as opposed to a blowout. He said he could still give me volume and curls, plus the trim so I allowed him to. The curls we gone the next day, and there was no volume in the body of my hair what so ever. As I stated before, I get blow outs regularly and the curls from the round brush and blow dryer usually last me 5-6 days! This was an overpriced, not what I asked for, failed, experience. If you value your time and expect professionalism at your beauty salon, RUN don't walk IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION!!! read more

I have been searching for a stylist since I moved to the DMV back in 2014. After my appointment I truly felt I have found my stylist. I love my sew in. It is everything i need and want. I also like how Van kept it professional when his assistant had to leave. My wait was longer then expected but worth the wait.
