It's been a few years since we have been to Lamberts. We were very disappointed in the food. You know it's bad when the local gas station has better pot pie and ribs. My visit today found their menu and their prices about the same as the last time I came 5 years ago. That is amazing. After several visits to the Foley AL Lambert's, it's Missouri forebear presented itself directly in our route to Lollapalooza. We stopped for dinner. Right off the bat you're treated to the best of what Lambert's offers: the throwed rolls. Catch one (literally) and put your choice of apple butter or molasses (two unusual spreads) and you're good. Same for the "passarounds" brought to the table by roving staff. At our table, the fried okra was a universal hit. For this reviewer, the fried onions and potatoes--in a swankier joint, they might be called "Lyonnaise"--were delicious. Others at the table either didn't eat onions or rated them "fine". The macaroni and tomatoes did not excite anyone at the table, including the avowed pasta lover who had really been looking forward to them. Was it a false memory from Foley, or were they just not as good? To her they tasted overly sweet. On to the main courses: the Lollapaloozians ("Chappel Roan!") split a chicken pot pie, while the reviewer and wife ordered country fried steak and fried chicken, respectively. The pot pie was judged by all to be a little too salty, but the crust and consistency of the innards were spot on. The country fried steak (not a typical choice from this reviewer) had the right combination of crust and gravy, but too mildly seasoned for a Louisiana boy. A little pepper helped. The fried chicken was unpleasantly dry to the point of disappointment. Thoroughly cooked, but just too dry. Sides were fine: the greens and potato salad were proper in good Southern form (is Sikeston still "Southern"?). Cold Chunky Applesauce was exactly as one would expect. Mashed potatoes were bland, but there was plenty of gravy and sauces to mask it. Overall the food was OK, and we'd put it at around three stars. We concur with other reviewers who found some fare to be overly salty. Add an extra star or two for some of the specialties, particularly the rolls, okra and potatoes and onions. On to ambiance, and hoo boy: As with the Foley property, you will walk into festooned spaces that make Cracker Barrel seem minimalist. It's a sit-down-with-menu and server (very friendly, in our case) experience, but with roving servers, some carrying pots of passarounds and others pushing a cart of (almost goes without mention) hot rolls thrown, sometimes at great distance. I'd give this five stars as it's a unique restaurant experience. This ain't Applebee's. read more

While this joint is famous for the "Throwed Rolls" it should be even more famous for the mouthwatering, satisfying, traditional Southern dishes. I had the "Country Fried Steak" and it was so so good. The gravy was on-point, the crust was crispy without being rock-hard. (I will quibble about the mashed potatoes: they tasted like they came from a box.) My dining partner had the Beef Liver & Onions. I almost had to stop him from licking his plate! The Pro Tip is: DON'T FILL UP ON THE ROLLS! Because the entree portions are HUGE and they have a cadre of young waiters and waitress that are constantly roaming to bring "passarounds"; Fried Okra, Fried Potatoes; Black Eyed Peas, Macaroni & Tomatoes... And all of these are in addition to whatever side come with your meal. (But -- having warned you -- I gotta say: The rolls are TERRIFIC!) It's an altogether amazing experience. We went mid-afternoon-ish on a Sunday and -- of course! -- there was a multitude of folks ahead of us. They gave us number 293 and the next number they called was like 155. I thought, "Great! We'll be eating at midnight!" I was wrong: They hustle people in like nobody's business. I don't think we waited more than 30 minutes. I've wanted to eat at Lamberts for years. But always rushing up and down the interstate, I've never made the time. Today, we did and I'm glad. First, we did not know what to expect as far as the decor. It's pretty cool. They have lots of old advertisements, pictures, etc. and even a small game room. My personal favorite is the old advertisements. Yes, they really throw rolls clear across the restaurant. More importantly, the rolls are hot and fresh. And I love they come around with molasses and apple butter. Excellent. I had the barbecue pork steak. The steak was huge and flavored very well. It came with three sides and again they tasted great. The only room for improvement... The steak and the mashed potatoes could've been hotter. My wife had a veggie place. She liked everything on it. Especially the coleslaw and the carrots. The staff comes around with hot sliced potatoes that are flavored very well. They have Black Eyed Peas, ravioli and fresh okra all included, and all you can eat. It's pretty neat. The staff was friendly. The service was prompt. Another area for improvement, however is cleanliness. When my wife sat down, she sat directly into beans. It was quickly cleaned up. We'll be back. Lamberts is one of those often-reviewed places about which I couldn't possibly say anything new. From my modest perspective, I'll confirm that the staff is enthusiastic about making diners feel at home, and making sure that all the "pass arounds" (served family style, above and beyond your order) are regularly distributed. We spent about an hour here, enjoyed the atmosphere and filling comfort food, ate about half our meal, and took the rest home for later. Food was not very good. Corn was so sweet couldn't eat it. Roast beef was unseasoned and chewy. Gravy was flavorless. Slaw tasted like sugar and cabbage. Rolls were kind of doughy. Iced Tea was sugar water. My daughter had chicken tenders and fries neither of which were good. Tenders were like they had been under a heat lamp for a while. We were excited to visit Lambert's . I do have to say the best thing about it was the rolls. The food was mediocre at best and ridiculously overpriced. The service was great and the server pleasant. The kids walking around with the "pass around" items all looked like they'd love to be anywhere else. I felt sorry for them. My husband ordered liver and onions with mashed potatoes and turnip greens. He got two skinny slices, one of which was charred on one end and overcooked. The other was cooked perfectly. The mashed potatoes and accompanying gravy both tasted like they came from mixes. The turnip greens were perfectly cooked but over seasoned and very salty. I ordered the chicken pot pie. It was a small aluminum bread pan. The top crust was very tough and there was no bottom one. The filling had good flavor, but was again very salty. My side was cottage cheese. Hard to screw that up and the sliced cucumbers and onions, which were quite tangy. The "pass arounds" were delicious, fried okra, macaroni with diced tomatoes and juice (yuck), fried potatoes, and onions, which were very greasy. We never saw the additional pass arounds that were advertised on the menu. As previously stated, the rolls were delicious. I definitely disagree at the price rating. It is listed as $$ when it should be three or four. A Chef salad is priced at $17.00. Every item on the menu was overpriced. read more

Very fun place. Busy! I was there on a Saturday. Arrived before 11 and it was already packed. I was a virgin and really didn't know what to expect. It's a whole experience! They do, in fact, throw rolls. So - we were seated immediately but had a bit of a wait before our drink order was taken. She said "I can put it on a paper towel. Well - there WAS a roll of paper towels on the table! I pulled off a sheet and she ladled on some fried okay. So - that's how it is in this joint! Drinks came. Orders were placed. I got chicken and dumplings, mashed potatoes with brown gravy, cooked carrots. As we awaited our food we got some "throwed rolls" "throwed" our way. Large, pillowy, warm, soft, yeasty rolls. Heaven!! Another gal came by with offerings of apple butter or sorghum. I tried each on my roll. Apple butter was the better of the two but plain butter was even better. Our food arrived quickly. Huge dumplings. Actually too large. Too big for a bite but no easy way to cut them without splashing the broth out of the bowl. Restaurants are often afraid to season their food and it's kind of a pet peeve of mine. Not so at this joint. Food was well seasoned. Very soon after our food arrived, more people came by with big bowls of stuff. One was macaroni and tomatoes. Good but oddly...sweet? Fried potatoes - delicious! Probably my favorite thing I had here. They offered some kind of peas or beans. Maybe black eyed peas? I'm not sure. I didn't partake. The chicken and dumplings were good but awkward to eat. Mashed potatoes were okay. I like them creamier. The carrots were just basic cooked carrots. Tasty but nothing special. Fried okra, same - tasty but basic. Rolls were great (although maybe a touch undercooked). And as I said, the fried potatoes were excellent. Delicious. The food is inexpensive and the place is lively and fun. Options are southern. Definitely a destination rather than just a place to grab some grub. Very fun family place. Good with kids. I do recommend. One last note - I have to assume there is a ton of food waste here. With the bowls of food coming around and the rolls, you end up with A LOT of food. You CAN take it home. This was a great experience! Stopped by here on the way home from St.Louis. We dined on a Sunday right when they opened at 10:30AM! There were already cars rolling in. We placed our orders, i got there fried chicken plate with yams and macaroni and cheese! Had no idea what I was about to encounter when I walked in. It was chaotic but that is the vibe it appears. I had the fried chicken and it was good, not momma's good but tender and tasty.
