I'd like to start off by saying that every single negative review on this site has been written by complete morons that have their head's so far up their collective asses, they vomit feces. I've been going to this place for years and there's a simple reason as to why: IT'S AWESOME. This is Vista's own Cheers so show it some goddamn respect. From the dark wood and brick that harkens back to an old world pub sensibility to the ever changing variety of beers and laid back clientele, everything about the place is comfortable and homey. The outside patio is spacious and has a round table fire pit which is a huge draw especially in winter. Add to that a variety of food that includes all your standard "bar food" with unique pizza choices, great sandwiches and even salad and pasta dishes. I would argue the menu is almost too big. Most of the bartenders and servers have worked there for years so they know what they're doing. This is how they make a living so if you've had a bad experience there it's probably your own fault and you should reassess your behavior as a customer. No one wants to take care of a high maintenance or rude guest. I mean, one of you idiots was waiting to be acknowledged by a host...in a BAR. But I digress. We're talking about how awesome this place is, not how mind numbingly stupid some of the people are on Yelp. Next let's discuss the location. Um, phenom---wait for it---ENAL! Backstreet is right next to the Krikorian, a movie theatre with enough screens to play pretty much whatever is out. They also do midnight shows which can be fun after some drinks. Plus it's right on Main St. so if you're craving anything from Mexican food to sushi, you're in luck because it's all in walking distance. The clientele is usually relaxed and casual. Just like any bar, you've got the normal, classic kind's of drinker's from the girl drinking the Tokyo ice tea with 3 of her "woo" girl's to the older guy across the bar drinking beer with an old friend. But Backstreet definitely has probably the widest array of different TYPES of people I've seen hang out at one location. Which isn't a bad thing. It's just too overly complicated to classify. Many of the beers are of course brewed in house, Backstreet being a brewery and all. And despite what you may have read, each beer has a distinct flavor and tastes different from the rest. Don't let the palate challenged dissuade you from trying great beer. Not everything can taste like Bud Light, kid's. Even if there happens to be two IPA's on the menu, they will taste different from each other. Indeed, every beer on the menu is deliciously unique. So where does this leave us, I wonder. I think ultimately what confuses the weak minded reviewers on this site about Backstreet is that it's not any one thing. Is it a bar? Absolutely. Is it a pizza place? Yeah. It is a brewery? Definitely. It is a restaurant? Sort of, yeah. But it's certainly not just ONE of these things. It's not just a standard restaurant. Strictly put, I'd say it's a pizza place that happens to have a bar/brewery attached to it. Don't expect a host to great you for God sake's. Backstreet Brewery brings shame to the word "brewery" as all their beers are weak as infants. Their IPA tasted like it had an IBU rating less than 50 and their wheat beer tasted like water. The sampler of 5 beers here proved to be absolutely bland and quite possibly the worst beer sampler our picky hero has ever had in San Diego county. After an afternoon of touring other breweries around Vista, Backstreet was ten levels of awful compared to everything else up there. Hey Backstreet... Miller called, they want their beer back. PROS: - There's lots of parking and other food options in the mall. CONS: - Tasteless beers. - Forget about table service. I've been coming here for years with family and friends so I hold this place pretty close to my heart. On most visits, it's pretty busy. Once we discovered the bar area offers food as well, it's been our go-to choice for seating as the restaurant part can get loud with lots of kids, sports teams, bigger groups. The service can be a little slow at times but always friendly. The waitress Meagan has been working here forever (actually 10 years she just told me last night) and she's super awesome. The staff has always been knowledgable about the menu and willing to work with specific requests such as no cheese on the pizza for me :) Like I mentioned in my tip, I'm not really a fan of their home beers but I tried the Benevolent Sun IPA last night and it's so far the only one I've really enjoyed. On the back of the beer menu they offer other breweries beer. By the way, Monday night is bike night here AKA a bunch of guys showing up on Harley's and parking out the front and meeting up for beers and pizza. Beers got really awesome in the past 6 months, Backstreets new head brewer was a brewer at Alpine Beer Co. and is killing it here being the head honcho. I have had some killer creative beers in the past few months that he has done including a ghost pepper stout, blackberry porter, tart cactus saison, and a beautiful Imperial IPA, cant wait to taste whats coming next. They also have about 6 guest beers which rotate and are sometimes pretty rare. Kevin is a great bartender that makes you feel at home and is down to talk beer. Today I went to Backstreet Brewery & Lamp Post Pizza on 15 Main Street, Vista CA. I walked in and the asked the bartender for a table with a plug for my pc. She pointed me to a table, and I sat at 5:20 and looked through the menu. Then, I waited. And, waited. At 5:40 still nobody had come over to me at all. Several different waitresses walked past many times. I was pretty annoyed after 20 minutes of being ignored. I decided to leave. Right then two girls walked in and sat behind me. I really dont like this bar, and it has nothing to do with cleanliness or the staff but its just the price for the drinks and not so great beers that make this place two stars. They always have the same craft beers on the board for almost 2 years. Their signature cocktails which you can find on the small menu of your table never changes as well, and their prices are pretty damn steep. Your better off going downtown to the Gaslamp and spending just as much for one drink and being in a better quality setting. Every time I come here day or night, theirs always a gang of dudes creepily watching the front entrance and if it happens to be a girl walking through, all eyes are immediately locked and you can feel the weird vibe shift throughout the bar. The service is ok here, its the pricing and the never changing over priced menu that really bugs me. We sampled all of the Backstreet beers on tap at the time of our July visit. It was difficult to tell the difference between them. The IPA and the Pale were almost indistinguishable, as were the lager and the blonde. The red did seem slightly more interesting -- but is that just because of the color? If you're looking for something to wash down pizza, it's probably better than Bud Light, but as a microbrau, this is highly forgettable stuff. Didn't realize it at the time, but the staff largely just read the copy from their website when introducing each round of tasters. read more

I worked at a Lamppost Pizza in high school in OC, and was really happy to see that the All Star Chicken Pizza is still on the menu. It's still amazing. We got the wings, and it was suggested that we get them double baked...they were good that way, but took longer than the pizza...so in the future I would ask them to hold off on the pizza a while so we can get through the wings first. And daayyuuuummmmm! the pizza was HOT, and I burned the skin off the roof of my mouth. However, this is no ones fault but my own. I worked at the place 20 years ago, I should know better! Beer selection is good too, since San Diego is Beer County, there's more than just Coors Lite and Bud Lite on tap. Good beer selection of local brews. Love coming here before the movies. Great selection - friendly staff. Didn't know they allowed NON service dogs INSIDE though! Just saw a party of 8 - looked to be about 2 families with a puppy. The kids were running round jumping on the booths screaming also and the "parents" were oblivious to their behavior or the dog! we came here because we had an hour to kill before our movie started, so shared a pitcher of beer. the interior is really cool and you can see the brewery up top, there's a big bar, elevated tables etc. i don't know much about beer, but we got the heritage hefferveisen because i like lighter beers as opposed to ales. it was a pretty good beer-we all agreed. what I didn't like was the service. the whole time it felt like we were being rushed...he snatched up our glasses literally the second after we finished them, asked us multiple times if we wanted something else, confirmed twice that all we wanted was one pitcher to share, and was just all together cold. i felt like he was trying to get us outta there, even though there wasn't a wait or anything. but when he saw his friend walk in, he was nothing but nice. it was just rude & i wouldn't want to go back here unless i was in the same situation (waiting for a movie). i have to say, the pizza smelled & looked amazing. read more

Love the Hefeweizen! A great craft brewery with a very nice patio. Went here for lunch on a Saturday so I can't speak as to nights but it was a very family friendly atmosphere during the day. We had the garlic chicken pizza which was very delicious. It was a bit expensive for pizza (even with the $4 off daily special) but it was quite good. Parking was a bit of a tricky situation since there is so much over there but if you are ready for a nice stroll it's a great time. read more

I've been meaning to write a review of this place for a while now as the Wife and I have been here several times. We usually go in around lunch time on a Saturday and eat lunch and have a couple beers prior to going to the movies next door. We usually alternate what we try from the beer menu, they have a wide variety. Although some have been very strong and bitter (7% alcohol I believe) I have enjoyed everything I've tried. The wife isn't a big fan of those though but has liked several other brews that I can't remember the name of now. Although I recall them being pricey for a small, the pizza has always been tasty. The two of us have difficulty finishing it so I'm thinking their small is probably like a Dominos Medium. We have ordered some of the appetizers as well but its just your typical deep fried bar food you would expect (not a bad thing). They always have a game or two on inside so seating is usually limited but It has always been beautiful outside when we arrived so we usually sit in the outside seating area with the sun and cool breeze. Like a couple others have stated, depending on when you go and how busy it is, they may be understaffed, delaying you getting your order taken. I have gotten up and gone to the bar for a refill more than once. Usually the Wait Staff is very prompt on refills ect. Overall I'm pleased with the service here and will continue stopping in for lunch before the occasional movie. read more

This place is connected to Lamppost Pizza, but I'm only reviewing the brewery. This brewery is at a great location, next to the theatre so you can go here and have a drink while you wait for your movie to start. The bartenders are really nice and the place was very clean. They have some good beers on tap, I recommend getting the sampler to help you choose. My personal favorites are the Hef, Green Little Pils(? not sure if I remembered the name right), Rita Red Ale, and Asian Wit. I also had a vodka tonic, and that was standard. Prices are really good here, the sampler was $6 and the vodka tonic was $5, big difference from downtown San Diego prices. read more

If my review just covered my beer and appetizer I'd give them 5 stars hands down but my taste buds danced with their pizza. Lets begin with the best to worst: Back Street Fuel Injected Coffee Oatmeal Stout **Nitro** Seeing a stout on any beer menu is like telling my mind you want the best of both worlds when your dining, you want your cake and eat it too with your meal, they truly are my liquid dessert. Now I had no clue what "nitro" meant and so I had to ask because never had I'd seen a beer advertised this way. It simply is adding more nitrogen, which gives it more of a thick mouth feel, and allows you to have the wonderful show that you often see with Guinness where you have "the waterfall of tiny bubbles slowly yielding to a dark brew with a fluffy, white head thick enough to float a bottle cap." Sorry had to share my findings of further explanation of the beautiful nitro process, and cannot take credit for that description though I agree with it whole heartedly. This beer was excellent smelled of fresh ground coffee, great taste, and very smooth. Potato Skins $7.49 I don't ever expect much from an appetizer to be honest, its like a snack ultimately meant to pacify you until the main course comes. These potato skins are surprisingly good and hearty. Probably could have just enjoyed these had I not been so kind and shared. Their presentation is nothing special, 5 potato skins covered each with their cheese and bacon. I actually enjoy that they put the sour cream and jalapeños in a side cup. They could very well have been frozen since they seemed perfect in that no cheese was spilling over or there wasn't an overabundance of bacon juice that made them a slippery hazard to hold. Nonetheless I enjoyed them! Pepperoni pizza This was nothing of a wow factor, it was a little to greasy for me (yes I know pizza is greasy, but there is a happy medium to me when it comes to pizza). It was good in terms of pizza but nothing special. This place has a great location, especially for a date night or if looking for a nice place to enjoy an evening with beer in hand. Went out for some drinks with buddy's from work. When we got there we sat outside un attended to for many minutes. Then the server came out and took our beer orders. We ordered a few pitchers.. she later came out to tell us that we can not have pitchers of the beer we ordered.. no biggie. So we order a diffrent beer. To be told they won't give us a pitcher of anything we want. She also told us that we can't order "mugs" because that's for special people only. When everyone else is being served them. Wow! Had not been back here in Years since they changed this location to Lampost, but I had a Groupon for a pickup and decided use it. When I arrived, unfortunately they informed me there was an issue and they just had to put it back in and make it again to ensure it was right. I said thank you and asked if I could possibly get a discount for waiting? :) I smiled. The girl really went to get her manager and he came back and TRULY made it right! Apologized, told us our Pizza was on the House, & even gave me and my kids drinks and stayed and talked to us too. I also want to note that I was so happy that they gave me no problems in wanting 2 completely different specialty pizzas half and half for one pizza. What's a brewery without any brew? Lame. So me and my 2 gf's hit this place up on a Sunday evening, it wasn't too busy since the football crowd had already died down I think, but anyway when we walked in, the two hostesses blew us off, we had to ask if it was ok to sit ourselves, that wouldn't normally piss me off if it was busy but it wasn't! then we looked at their brew menu, when I pointed at what I wanted, the bartender carelessly points at all their brew options and says "we're out of that one, that one, that one, and that one." uhhh.. I had no idea that Lamppost had elected to go the route of BJ's. Some work friends and I dropped in here on Halloween for a couple rounds. The beers are pretty good, however I can't recall what I had as it was, you know, Halloween and everything. It is pretty cool, however, that you can watch a beer maker at work in the tanks above the bar. Decor is cool, nice and simple. Will definitely try it again in the future and do my best to remember what it was that I had consumed. read more

Talk about strategic planning! A brewery located next to many restaurants and a movie theater??! I think they earn four stars for the location alone. Bump it one more star for having fire pits...and if I could bump up to six stars, I would for the beer selection. No worries for you non beer drinkers, it's a full bar also. Plenty on the tap menu that regularly get rotated in and out. Bar staff seems to be on it with the speedy service and wise recommendations. Got that mid-beer hunger? I guess I'm in the minority; I really liked this place! Boyfriend and I met up with some friends here for a bite to eat. It was on a weeknight, and was fairly empty. We got a large pepperoni and sausage pizza, and some jalapeno poppers. I will say that the prices are a little on the steep side, but I don't mind paying if I think the food is great... and it was. The pizza was very tasty, and the jalapeno poppers.. well, I'm not really a fan of them to begin with, but these weren't bad. I'm not sure what the name of the bartender was who was working that night, but he made me some (3) killer margaritas! Big kudos to that guy. Everyone in my group left full, and happy. My only real gripe about this place are the prices. The pizza, cheesy breadsticks, and beer are great here. However you do pay for it. A large meat lovers pizza was $28, but it was tasty. Monday nights are $2 pints so that was nice. Their happy hour prices for drinks and apps are good prices. Overall its a good place for beer, pizza, and to watch the game. I don't know if its as good as Pizza Port, but they have 6 or 7 tvs in the bar to watch the games. Also the fire pit outside is a nice touch and fun to sit around at night drinking. read more

Too bad the beer is not better. We live nearby and we keep trying this place out. Every time we go I am hoping the beer is better but it's always the same IPA's and sour tasting beers. Even the hefenweisen is not sweet, would it kill them to produce a sweet or mellow beer? This time we heard they had a new brewer so we were excited to taste the new beer. We had samples of many of the beers but they were all sour or tart or just IPA's. I hope they will get some descent beer someday. May I suggest at least bringing in some guest beers from Port brewing besides the DOUBLE IPA. How about a nice Dunkel or a smooth brown or even a Belgian. The food is overpriced but good, not great. Horrible service. To the point of unbelievable. Absolutely avoid this place at all costs. It is extremely rare that I would give any establishment a one star review. But servers at Backstreet -you definitely earned this one!! Talking to your fellow servers while people sit at dirty tables without service for 45 minutes (several tables in my eye line were going through this) and then standing around texting on your iphone isn't what you are at work for. I would have to assume that there actually isn't a manager on site at this establishment. Do yourself a favor and go down the street to Mother Earth and order food from Urbn Pizza. Both establishments actually want your business. This is such a great location I can only hope that they run it into the ground quickly so that someone who knows what they are doing can move in.
