Although El Paso (via Sunland Park) does have a horse racing track, it is one of the most famous places for cowboy boots (custom leatherworks), it's the Wild West, and it's freaking TEXAS... believe it or not there is no "true" place to actually buy equine gear. It's so strange, there's a luxury custom boot-maker on every corner and you can't walk 10ft in a store around here without passing someone wearing "Ariat"... but NO place for people who actually own horses lol Luckily, we stumbled upon Landmark Mercantile, and how amazing it was. Now then, there may be others closer to LCNM that have been coming here for years. For us though, we never really even need to travel towards LCNM, and if we do, we aren't looking for something like this. As horse owners though, we needed and wanted some stuff. I'm very picky about shopping online for certain things unless I can touch it, see it, experience it etc. This is what lead us to seeking local equine stores, which eventually lead us right out of town to mesquite. This place is very big! And from horses to cattle to whatever animal you'd have on the farm, they have the gear and the food you need. Everything is available here and whatever isn't, I'm sure they can order it. I didn't see anything that seemed to expensive, and everything seemed to be market average. When you first arrive, you're greeted by some adorable little cows in the pen. Likewise, there were some large roosters patrolling the entry way. Ok kinda cool. But then, to our delight, they have cats. No, not feral / stray cats, but cats that have names and actually live in the large store; like 10 of them! And they are super friendly! They have locally sourced, fresh cuts of meat, and dairy, and bread, and even ice cream! Get a scoop and walk around the store! As far as tack goes, which is why I was there, they have every single thing you need for horses. While the Louis Vuitton breast collar was tempting, I went with the fancier / show type set and got a new bit, bridle, breast plate etc. They have so many options from plane to fancy, cheap to higher end, and everything in between. Saddles, head stalls, reigns, leads, halters, bits, hackamores, saddle blankets, (I could keep going but just know they have all of it). For me, the location is awesome! Living in a brand new home in a brand new luxury community in El Paso, naturally there's no livestock kept here lol. So, we board at a world class performance facility called Armstrong Equine Services. Which happens to be ONE exit on I-10 away. And, the owner happened to walk in while I was inside - reassuring me this place is the place for anything equine related. I'll take more photos next time. What a fun lil place we randomly spotted on the freeway! The ostriches were what caught our attention and we were desperate to feed them! But sadly, they said they didnt have any feed for them. The way their cages were set up though didnt exactly look feeding-friendly neither. Still really really cool to see them, especially their eggs! They're about the size of newborn babies or bigger! My husband and I wanted desperately again to buy one! But they said no to that too for maternal, safety reasons lol. That mama ostrich will mess you up if you dare try to take an egg! They also had goats,baby goats, rabbits, buffalos, texas longhorns, bucking bulls, rams, ducks, and freaking peacocks!! Freaking love peacocks lol. They at least had chicken eggs to sell but the lady we talked to said that it would be best not to eat those anymore as they been sitting out in the sun for quite some time lol. Glad for her honesty. It wasnt more than 10 mins that we visited the entire place but it was still super fun to walk around the place and check out these animals! We cant wait to come back again and hopefully get to feed them next time. read more

Looking to purchase chicks? Buyer Beware!!! We purchased 6 chicks a little under 2 weeks ago. We have now lost all but 2. We have a flock of about 30 chickens and 2 roosters, but we do not breed them, so we usually buy 6-10 chickens every spring to grow our flock. We got our first chicks 8 years ago. We have the correct feed, know what temperature they need to be kept at and a special room for them to stay while they are babies. We lost the first chick about a day and a half after they came home. The second was the next day. We had the remaining 4 for about 3 more days until the third one died. The remaining 3 chicks looked to be doing well except one was very small and not growing like the other two. She died two days ago. We still have two chicks that are now doing very well. We are a family that truly cares very much for all our animals and it was extremely upsetting to loose so many baby chicks, especially for my 3 daughters. I did contact Landmark after the first chick died to see since it was so soon if we could have another one and the lady, uncaringly, told me they don't replace chicks and that's why they keep them for 24 hours so all the deaths will happen on them. Well all the deaths didn't happen on them! We will not return to this store. We have purchased chicks from both Horse and Hound and Tractor Supply with no problems whatsoever. read more
