In need of one small bottle of Japanese sake I've trekked to Chelsea, Manhattan following my daily Sisyphean Task. This brick and mortar business has good operating hours as they open late to accommodate customers who either work late or travel afar and yonder of lengthy commute times. My need and purpose of one small bottle of Japanese sake was not for consumption, but for Ching Ming Festival 清 明 節 worship to offer prayers, and libations before tombstones in memory of my beloved grandparents. I needed a metal screw cap bottle for easy opening access as I will be outdoors in a cemetery standing on traditional burial graves (not indoors of a mausoleum) without a wine bottle corkscrew opener. The staff is limited but able to heed my hope within my mind for my plight. Sake Hakutsuri Junmai Ginjo, 300 m - $7.99 Disappointingly there were no staff specifically from Minoru's Sake Shop offering tastings, providing guidance or lecture wearing traditional Japanese kimono robe as per their Yelp photos. There is no indication on their website of a tasting schedule or a flyer posted on the door either. The sales associate did not provide any explanation or description of Japanese sake polishing as mildly sweet or astringent and savory flavor, but the dude appears very apathetic and stolid without any sincere care for customer service. Selling the product with the intent to usher customers out in order to return to his phubbing rather than working appears to be the normal. Wouldn't recommend because the employees are either racist or incompetent. I came here to purchase some saké based on the reviews for Minoru's Sake Shop, but apparently it no longer exists? Although they do sell saké, the employees I encountered weren't helpful in selecting one. The cashier was on his phone until it was time for me to pay, and another employee just glared at me from 10 feet away the whole time I was shopping, instead trying to assist me. I did buy one bottle, but I wouldn't return here due to the poor customer service. I'll stick to Astor Wines or Sakaya for my future saké runs. read more

I've been here before and more often before the new management. However, recently, went there for a Sake wine tasting. I actually, bought the Junmai Ginjo Yumenokaori wine served best chilled. I'm not normally a Sake drinker and newly diabetic so being that Sake is mainly made of rice it breaks down into a starch. However, at only 55% , 15% alcohol content, 1.3 acidity, S. M. V +2, Semi-dry, it's not much alcohol & this wine can be paired w/ Oysters. Vinaigrette salads, pasta & pork terrine etc. Holidays are near so I may be keeping this one for the holidays to introduce non-sake drinkers to it. The reason I didn't give this place (5) stars is because the owner has a hifalutin demeanor. He's stand offish & If it weren't for his nice staff he'd make no money and he has good quality wines & spirits. Give it a try, I recommend it. read more

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: (I wish yelp would allow me to underline) If you're in the neighborhood and in the need for Soju, your obvious thought would be to "go to Korea Town". Yeah, that's what I thought too. But in reality, capitalism is privy to this fact and the closest liquor store in Korea Town obnoxiously charges $30 for a bottle of soju. OUTRAGEOUS, RIGHT? Right. I was pretty determined to get soju and not pay an exorbitant amount for it, and after digging around on Yelp, that's how I found Landmark Wine & Spirits. I called and asked the owner how much for a bottle and he told me... EIGHT DOLLARS! My fucking god, half a mile up it's triple the price. I couldn't believe it. I told him that very fact and he just chuckled and agreed. This is how you keep your credit score high, guys. So yeah, the next time you need soju bottles for your picnic, don't play yourself. I popped in here last night in a hurry to get something specific quickly. The staff was very friendly and helpful. They quickly helped me find options across the price range spectrum. I made my selection and was on my way. While at the checkout, I realized that although it looks small from the outside, it is a fairly large store that is stacked to the ceiling with a variety of all kinds of wine and spirits. On a quick glance, the prices are pretty good as well. This shop is located about a half a block from the 23rd street 1 train, so if you are hopping on or hopping off of the train it is a great go to spot for alcohol. read more

Recommended for: SAKE, wonderful wines, champagne, shochu, ports, you name it! Service 6, Selection 5, Quality 5. This place has been my personal secret that I have only shared with my closest friends, but I feel I am doing a disservice to Yelp by not "yelping" about Landmark Wine & Sake. This is the only place in all of NY that I will go for my Sake - and you all know just how picky I am about my Sake. The staff here are absolutely amazing and a delight to work with. They are enormously knowledgeable, and if you are a novice to wines, sake, etc. they make learning fun and talk in very simple terms. If you're more of an oenophile, they speak your lingo - and the banter is amusing to say the least. The staff is completely laid back and truly enjoy what they do. The selection is vast and impressive. They carry brands from around the world, and if there is something you are interested in, they'll try and find it for you (big plus with me :) ). But I'll be honest in saying that they have never steered me wrong with a recommendation nor unable to accommodate any request this demanding man makes. As for the quality, oh, its amazing as well. Wine's that you'd usually pay $100s in a restaurant are much less retail, and they'll even steer you like a sommelier. They carry both expensive and non-expensive brands of all categories. Yes, I trek all the way from 86th to here, but believe me, its absolutely worth it. The best thing about this place... and keep this a hush-hush on yelp ok... is the tastings. It's so hard to find a place offers good sake in NYC; I think I can count the number of stores that sell beyond the usual five bottles on one hand. Landmark is, for lack of a better term, a new landmark for me. The selection is awesome (usually filled with rare and seasonal sakes), the location is pretty much central to the entire city (not the far up, not too far over), and the staff here is extremely knowledgeable. The first time I went, I literally said "Hi, I need a sake for a picky person. I think he likes unfiltered sake that's not too sweet." The gentlemen behind the counter came around and brought me over to the display. I then got a pretty good education on sake and was given a recommendation. That recommendation was the "best sake ever" according to the bottle's recipient. This exercise has been repeated a few times now too. Don't forget to check in on Yelp for a discount. I called my favorite vineyard in Sonoma to see who their New York distributor was so that I could send a very special, meaningful bottle of wine to my father in NY for Father's Day. I live in Chicago. Landmark was the only place in NYC that has that particular bottle in stock. When I called Landmark yesterday, the kind gentleman on the phone said I just needed to call back when I had the exact address, and he'd quote the price of either messanger or delivery service. When I called back today with the address, a different man named Uialtesn told me he would not take my order because "you live in Chicago" and "we have a lot of problems with that." I told him he could charge my card before placing the delivery order to make certain it went through. He said "no." I asked to speak to his manager. He said the manager was on vacation. I begged, saying they were the only place in NY that could help me get this special gift to my dad. He said no again. He said he would do it if I paid cash. I'm in Chicago! How would I send cash? Look, I've worked in the wine industry, and I respect that credit card fraud is a problem for vendors. However, good wine salespersons know that customer service pertains to more than how you treat your customers in your store. The man's utter unwillingness to help--and the fact that he provided contradictory information to the person I spoke with yesterday--make me certain that not only will I never shop Landmark, but that I'll let my friends in Chelsea know to stay far, far away as well. read more

Right down the street from my job, Landmark is a great place to get that " Boy am I glad to be out of work" liquor. The shochu selection is awesome! I love sweet potato shochu and these guys have a pretty nice selection of that variety, and others. Tons of sake, and some plum wine, and of course regular wine and champagne. The owners/employees are very nice, funny and knowledgeable, and every experience here has been awesome. This one of my favorite liquor stores in the Chelsea area. read more

At first it seems like a hodge podge of wines and the selection is moderate.. def. not huge BUT every time I get a recommendation, I am never disappointed. Swung by here one day after hanging out with some friends and was pleasantly surprised by the selection and the staff! Good prices and great specials, and I definitely noticed the classes they have looked pretty interesting. I do like the way it is organized, it takes a minute to figure it out and then you can make your way around very easily, although the staff is super nice and happy to help. As I have been walking by this store for the past six months on my way to and from school, I finally stopped in to take a look for something in mind from the Burgundy region. Noting the high ceiling and the volumes of wines and spirits, I found I was in a remarkable store whose reach is exceptional and clearly a great venue for sake. While I didn't find what I was looking for from the Echezeaux area, I was really taken by the whiskey section nearby. Does the store have everything? No, but if you are looking for a big California wine section, sake, vodka, Whiskey (Irish, Scotch, Bourbon, Rye, craft) and gin, this would be a good place to go in the Chelsea/Flatiron District. read more

Great selection, (apparently a super den of sake - which I love!) clean and organized layout, all price ranges covered (many wines under $15) and they deliver within a local area for only a $30 minimum! Why 3 stars instead of 5? First, staff is apathetic or unknowledgeable. Twice I've been here and didn't receive any help, suggestions or recommendations. Any question was met with a perfunctory "yea, it's good". Secondly, considering their amazing delivery, you'd expect many customers would want to be repeat customers (like me). But they do NOT have a) an online inventory of their wines nor do they b) log your purchase history in their system. So if you want to re-order from them, you must remember the name of the wine precisely or do it in-person, at the shop, racking the ceiling to floor shelves trying to remember the label or name. So good for going in person, but don't expect any expert help and their perks aren't really helpful. read more

Gorgeous, lovely shop. Bright, clean, sleek, modern feel, though with sophisticated charm. Lovely selections. Not much that I haven't seen elsewhere. Though alluringly shelved, and well stocked. My issue was the same as Gracie's. In such a shop where the prices are anywhere from $2-$15 more than I can get the same item elsewhere, there was no service. No greeting when I entered, nothing when I left, no offer to assist, or ask if I was looking for something in particular. Extra odd as I was wearing and carrying items that should flag any salesman to pinpoint someone comfortable making a moderate to expensive purchase. But the staff were more interested in conversing with each other. Seems like it's hit or miss with service when going through the other reviews. I'd say this is a great option for some exception sake/plum/Asian wine options...and for some quick quality gifting, if you're in the area and find yourself in need post haste. Otherwise, no dice. This place is a veritable pantheon to the spirit world and I don't mean ghosts. Shelve after shelve of small batch and craft distillers of excellent quality. I go here to learn as well as buy. The staff are not pushy and let you browse in peace which is nice. I spent most of my time perusing bourbon, whisky and rye. I scored a bottle of Wisconsin whisky which I had never seen before. Took it hom and it was as delicious as they told me it would be. Also a sizeable selection of wine which I did not investigate. All price ranges covered. This is my favorite liquor store in NYC and should easily be in everybody's top 5 at least. First off, I mainly drink sake and soju, so naturally I'd be inclined to come here. However, I know a thing or two about whiskey and wine and the selection here is top-notch. They might not have everything, but I'm often surprised by the things I find here I can't find other places. About the service: I know that you can get good advice from the knowledgeable staff; they've helped me and I've seen them help countless others. I personally like that they don't ask me if I need help all the time. Yes, I've been staring at the shelves for a long time, but that's because I'm checking out all the stuff I haven't seen before. I don't like it at other places when I feel like I'm being surveilled by the staff. This place is also super-easy to get to, take the 1 train to 23rd St and it's right upstairs. Located quite near to the 7th Avenue Whole Foods, this wine store has a huge sake selection and hosts frequent tastings at the tasting bar in the back of the store. Prices are pretty decent and the sake selection is one of the largest in the city. The staff is very knowledgeable and will be happy to explain the intricacies of the world of sake to you. read more

A good selections of sake, which is the primary reason why I come here. Sakaya has a good selection as well, and is closer to my apt, but this place is cheaper. They have a variety of ginjo/daiginjo sakes including my favorites of waketake. The place is pretty big, and has nice high ceilings. Everything is kept clean and nice looking. Although prices arent as good as Mitsuwa in Edgewater, NJ, its still the best alternative to Manhattanites who love sake. Will be back for my sake needs. read more
