I am 67 years old and I recently switched dentists after having the same dentist for decades. It was a difficult decision, since she was also my friend; however, I honestly felt that during my senior years, I needed an extra level of proactive dentistry which sadly, I was not getting. The level of expertise and detailed dental care I received during the past three visits at Lands End Dental really surprised me. I believe that Dr. Rosa Mathai is a perfectionist, enjoys her work, and of course, is very dedicated to her craft. All my life I had major phobias about dental work and it wasn't until coming to these fabulous dentists that I overcame my fears. In fact, my entire family AND my senior mother were patients. Recently, I came in for routine hygiene with Joe and met the new dentist, Dr. Rosa Mathai. She's just as wonderful, calming, efficient, and professional as my previous dentists, and totally adorable. Dr. Mathai is very thorough and conservative - not doing unnecessary dental work unless she feels it's in the best interest of a healthier mouth. Overall, I love the dentists and wonderful staff of this office. They're all so helpful and reassuring and most of all, honest and transparent. Highly recommend them if you ever need dental work. Dr. Wardani is not a nice person. I too, once thought he was wonderful and a great dentist. Until he persuaded me to purchase $10,0000 dollars worth of laminates that did not fit properly. He ruined my teeth and my smile. His associate, Dr. Paul Ortner (West Portal Dental Care) was supposed to fix my teeth but only made the situation worse. The teeth in question began fracturing and had to be removed at a cost of close to $6,500 per tooth. Dr's Wardani and Ortner offered me a $5,600 settlement. When I wouldn't accept it Dr. Wardani had Susan, an office manager from the West Portal Dental Care, threaten me over the phone. Dr. Wardani was super sweet and so were his staff until things went wrong. He used to give me big hugs and tell me I was his favorite patient. He made me feel like I was part of their wonderful dental office family. At the same time he was telling me I needed dentistry I didn't need. I would never recommend Dr. Wardani to anyone. read more

Dr. Wardany is the best dentist IN THE WORLD. No, but seriously. He's incredibly nice -- and so are all the other people who work in his office. You get a definite sense when you go there that everyone's positive and friendly toward each other (no in-staff sniping or tension), they're all happy to be there, and they're all considerate and understanding of what you might be feeling at all times. In short, the atmosphere is awesome, which is a big deal for a nervous type like me! Dr. Wardany has talked me through everything he's doing when he's done my dental work. There are no "omgsh why is he picking up THAT instrument?!" moments, because he lets me know what's going on and why. And as noted above, I'm an incredibly nervous person at the dentist's office (childhood experiences, eek!), so making ME feel comfortable and confident while I'm having teeth extracted is an epic feat! He makes sure I'm doing okay at all times, and he offers "breaks" if it's a longer procedure. (Unlike many doctors I've seen, he never brushes you off if you're having pain or discomfort, or just feeling a little anxious, or what-have-you.) His manner is confident and understanding; you can relax, because you feel like you're in good hands -- and his education and experience confirm that you absolutely ARE in good hands. He also, as another reviewer noted, clearly keeps up with current studies and dental practices (and founded a forum on dentistry in SF, too!). Super-knowledgeable, is what I'm saying. Like whoa. This is the big one -- I mean, okay, it's ALL important, but this one is so incredibly hard to find: Dr. Wardany is honest and has your best interests at heart. I know, I know. You've heard it all before, you're jaded, you're not buying it. But listen! I've heard lots of people say that kind of thing, too, and it's pretty much never been true. So I feel your pain. But then I went to Dr. Wardany, and damn, he's the real deal. SERIOUSLY. It's like having your awesome older brother or favorite cousin go into dentistry -- you know he's not trying to overcharge you or mess you over or anything, because hey, it's family! I know it sounds crazy, but this place is totally like that. Yes, he's running a dental practice, and yes, that means there's a charge for services...but he clearly does his best for you, always. He charges less than any dentist I've ever been to; he doesn't recommend more than you need; he talks over the options with you and gives you a clear idea of ALL the options -- he doesn't steer you toward the expensive procedures; if you have an emergency, he makes himself available to help you ASAP, and he doesn't guilt-trip you about it, either. When I had a procedure go longer than expected (deep roots! some teeth just aren't cooperative), he assured me that it was perfectly fine, I was doing great, no need to worry about the schedule, he had it all worked out. He continued to make sure I was doing okay, and he continued to offer breaks when he thought I might need them. He didn't rush me or make me feel like a bother. Oh, and then there are the "little things" that aren't so little: Dr. Wardany follows up with you to make sure everything's going okay (via phone call and through follow-up appointments, of course). When I had to go to the oral surgeon, he called over to that office and let them know I was coming. He calls my prescriptions in to the pharmacy so everything's ready to go when I get there. He makes sure I have a magazine while waiting for the novocaine to set in, so that I won't be bored, for heaven's sake. He remembers me. When I walk in the door, whoever's working at the front desk greets me by name, too. I've never had such a positive reaction to a medical professional before. I seriously want to bake him a cake (only, it seems odd to give a cake to a dentist...cavities and all that). And I don't even bake! He's just that fantastic. trl;dr -- Take your teeth to this man. I have been Dr. Wardany's patient since 2008. Throughout my experience, he has been attentive, caring, and genuine. Dr. Wardany ONLY does what he deems absolutely necessary to one's well-being (contrary to commercial approach of most dentists, these days). He always follows up with a phone call after procedures to make sure his patient is well. If this is not true care, I am not sure what is! This is a professional with great integrity and expertise. I first started seeing Dr. Wardany a few years ago when I had a tooth infection and needed an emergency root canal. Being self-employed...I don't have insurance and was really done with going to dental school because I like anyone else hate going to the dentist, and that just prolongs the experience, and I found with how much time it took away from work, I was actually not saving any money. Dr. Wardany charges reasonable rates for EXCELLENT work...he's friendly, knowledgeable, and isn't one of those hack dentists that tells you you need your wisdom teeth pulled when you don't, or need braces when your teeth are straight. So when he does tell you something is needed, you know it absolutely is needed. I know that every dollar is wisely spent. I followed him to his new office though I live in Oakland now, and the people he has working in his office are just as friendly, and not in that phony customer service way but genuinely friendly real people. For my last appointment I called expecting to get someone answering the phone who worked in the office- but the Doc himself answered....I don't know the neighborhood and had a puppy in my car and was having trouble finding a shady spot, and he gave me advice on where he thought there might be shade to park my truck, he and my endodontist (Dr. Dan Simon, also reviewed, and they happen to be friends) make the most pleasant dental experiences I've ever had in my almost 41 years...and I've had a lot of dental work. Exams, fillings, crowns, root canals, implants.... I'll definitely be sticking with him for years to come. And I think that dentists are definitely someone that you want to find based on referrals by real people not services, because the services don't tell you when a dentist makes you feel comfortable and doesn't overcharge...so trust me (though you don't know me) and the others who say..he's great! read more

This past Saturday, I had a dental emergency after dining out with the hubby and two of our friends in a Santa Clara buffet. Upon seeing the horrible reviews we should have just opted not to eat there but given that my friend was almost due to have her baby, this would have been one of the last opportunities to spend some time with her, so against my better judgment we decided to give the place a shot. I took my bite of a piece of broccoli and immediately knew something was terribly wrong. I felt a tiny grainy piece of something hard as I bit in and upon spitting it out, I felt my tongue rubbing against something that felt sharp and jagged on my back molar. I did read one review later where this happened to someone else due to finding a piece of bone fragment in their dish as well and had to go see a dentist. I wasn't in any pain but knew that my back molar must have gotten chipped but given that I hadn't eaten anything that should have had any bone or anything hard in it, that came as a huge surprise. Well, for the rest of the meal, I could not eat a thing but we still had to pay full price. I couldn't eat the rest of that evening so the hubby frantically started looking up emergency dentists on Yelp. That's when we found Dr Wardany, who was the only dentist to accept weekend appointments. Following morning we called and were able to get an appointment for 11:30am. I was so hungry but couldn't even take a sip of water because my tonque was too sore by that point as it had been rubbing against that tooth the entire night. When I walked in, Dr. Wardany was very friendly and understanding. After some paper work, he had me sit in the chair and took an x-ray of the area. My biggest fears were confirmed, the tooth had been chipped and due to it being a tooth were I had a rather large filling put in a few years ago, he told me other than filing my tooth down a bit so it wouldn't feel so sharp, I would need to have a crown (possibly root canal) done later. This really caused a lot of panic and anxiety in me because I couldn't believe how a trip to this buffet and biting into a vegetable could do this. I had already gone through a lot of bad news that month, not to mention a lot of financial hardships after having my valuables stolen from a friends car, then learning my mom had tried to take her own life, followed by a friend who turned her back on me in the midst of all this. Being on the verge of tears, Mr. Wardany listened to all my concerns, answered my questions and tried to give me the best advise possible on seeking someone who could accomodate my fragile state and rather than have me go through additional stress, find a dentist who specialized in Crowns and Root canals and could sedate me during the process. At the end of the visit, we expected to pay the $250 just for the emergency visit, however, he ended up not charging us for the visit and instead told me to just put that money towards having the actual work done elsewhere. As many things that were already going on in my life and the worries I was facing, it really brought me that moment of peace, when he showed me this kind gesture, even though he still ended up having to come in on his day off to see me. It was such a relief to know we could now put this extra money towards getting my tooth fixed. I would definitely recommend seeing Mr. Wardany if you ever have a future emergency or just need a compassionate dentist with good bed side manner for your basic dental needs! :) read more

The story (you may want to scroll down to the bottom if you don't have time/do not like to read personal stories as yelp reviews): I was in desperate need of emergency repair for my front tooth on New Year's Day. I had absolutely no luck getting in touch with a single dentist at my assigned dental office, who had set all of his "emergency calls" to be forwarded to his secretary. I was anxious as I had to leave town on Monday morning to get to an important meeting, where a broken tooth might not fly as a good conversation starter. And of course, there was the excruciating pain that comes with fracturing your maxillary incisor... Somehow, Dr. Wardany had gotten a hold of my phone number and contacted me at around 10am Saturday morning. He scheduled an appointment immediately for 12:30. Met the guy for the first time, but could tell right off the bat that he was very understanding of my situation. Took care of all the administrative things (since no one was working on a New Year's Day) and got to working on my tooth immediately. After the X-rays, he discussed the possible need for a root canal. But because of my extenuating circumstances (I was going out of town the following Monday morning, for a very important meeting on Tue), he did a temporary fix, just so that my tooth would look and hopefully feel normal for the time being. What was so great about him was that with each step, he made sure I understood what was going on. It is usually hard for these trained professionals to cut out the science jargon... to help you understand what is going on without sounding condescending. Shows how much he respects his patients and values their opinion Kindness alone cannot make you a great doctor, of course. The end result was nearly flawless- my two front teeth looked nearly identical after only about 45 minutes in the chair. He anesthetized using a method that I hadn't even heard of as a researcher, which demonstrated to me that he is constantly keeping up with research and the general scientific community. He told me that he learned some of his techniques from his old clinic, where he trained under great dentists and also picked up a few great skills from highly experienced dental assistants. He is always engaged in the situation and constantly learning... an essential trait for anyone with a doctor title in their names. My tooth ached the day of (as it should have, as I broke about 50% of it off), but it felt much better after. I've been able to eat some solid foods three days after the treatment. I was able to make it to the meeting successfully, and of course, no one could see that my tooth had been chipped only days before. Reasons for five stars (what you should get out of the long story...): - extremely kind and understanding of the patient's comfort, needs, and situation. Individualized attention that one usually cannot expect with many healthcare professionals these days. - knowledgeable. solid background and education. extremely trustworthy (this was confirmed with other dentists and dentists-to-be). picking up new ideas and keeping up with current studies in dentistry - Great aesthetics and hand-eye coordination. my new tooth appears flawless! - A morally and ethically solid dentist! Does not recommend more than you need (again, confirmed with those more knowledgeable in this area), and provides emergency services. Other dentists who "offer emergency care" will direct you to their helpless secretaries. - Experience, experience, experience! He has worked under many skilled dentists in the past, and it is obvious that he learned a great deal before moving here. Of course, he made sure I had a follow-up visit scheduled in the upcoming weeks. I cannot wait to go thank him! Usually not even great bars or restaurants merit a yelp review for me these days, but his help/skills/kindness makes this all worth my time (and yours, if you are still reading it). I could write a novel about Dr. Wardany, five stars is hardly enough. He is hands down the greatest dentist and a great person! I have horrible teeth- REALLY, I should be used in case studies. If it were not for him I would be limited to only lukewarm liquids with no flavor. I have had paralyzing fears of dentistry since I was very young, I was given sedatives, laughing gas all of it. Now, I don't need anything with Dr. Wardany, I am always comfortable and at ease. He takes time to explain everything that is going on with my teeth, what the procedures will be, how it is done and what will happen after. I am right now with a temporary crown and when I went in for the permanent he noticed that the shade was off and we decided to go another week so it would match. The work he does is truly amazing, my teeth are taken care of inside and out, so I feel good and they look great. People are always surprised to know how much work I have had done because there is minimal appearance of the many crowns I wear. :-D He is observant and takes his time with you and makes sure you are comfortable and informed of what is happening. He follows up after difficult procedures to check in how you are doing. He is very professional and up-to-date with new things and careful to follow the best route of practice for each person and every tooth. I have been seeing Dr. Wardany for almost a year now and he is easily the best Dentist I have ever had! He is compassionate, friendly and has an all around wonderful "bedside manner" I consistently feel relaxed and in good hands with him, which isn't always easy when there's a drill in one's mouth. He is also an absolute genius with Cosmetic Dentistry; my four front teeth used to be absolutely whack, with big spaces, chips and some light discoloring. Now decades later since Dr. Sherman has retired I've stayed with the practice now that Dr. Wardany has taken over and still love it. Though my insurance through my new employer doesn't fully cover this office anymore I'm staying because Dr. Wardany and his staff of Joe, Brittany and Merlette are great. They know what they're doing, how to handle patients and among anything are super friendly. Dr. Wardany has seen myself along with my entire family now since he's taken over and he knows all of us, our stories, history and greets us all with hugs every time we see him. (though the last paragraph is an update) I felt it right to let people know that Dr. Tamir Wardany is no longer at West Portal Dental As you now know, by having found Dr. Wardany at his new practice and location on Geary .... he has moved. In all three instances of seeing Dr. Wardany when he was at West Portal Dental, he was wonderful. Though he helped me out in two emergency situations I still stayed with my regular dentist who I have been seeing for about 15 years. But this weekend when my partner woke up on a Saturday with a bad tooth ache, I called his office now located on Geary and the message gives you his cell phone number to call, saying he'll call you back. I left a message on his cell phone and in about 5 minutes (No Joke) he called me back as he was driving to Sacramento for a wedding!! He talked to my partner and listened to her symptoms, gave a preliminary diagnosis, offered to try make calls to see if his friend, another dentist who specializes in root canals, could possibly see her today, and if not he said he would definitely see her tomorrow on Sunday when he gets back from the wedding. Well that does it ... we are both switching to Dr. Wardany as our regular dentist. I don't care if we do need to drive to the outer Richmond. Our regular dentist is very good and between us we have spent thousands (actually many thousands) with her but three times now when she has not responded to her pager on the weekend is just too much. I think Dr. Wardany deservers our money and we deserve the kind of care, concern, and quality that he seems to provide all his patients. He just called back a second time from the road to say that the other dentist is celebrating his 10th wedding anniversary and is not available today but Dr. Wardany will see my partner tomorrow and will call us as he leaves Sacramento to let us know the time he'll be back and will meet us at his office. I feel like we've gone back in time and a wonderful small town family dentist really does care about his patients. The crown on my front tooth broke off one evening when I was eating dinner. I had had it with the dentist who originally did the work because it was one fiasco after another. I turned to Yelp. I was desperate. After reading various reviews, I thought I'd give Dr. Wardany a try as the reviews were good and he was conveniently located. What a lucky break! (No pun intended). Dr. Wardany turned out to be the best overall dentist I have ever had. Not only do I now have a permanent implant that is a perfect match to my other teeth, his kindness, patience and eye for aesthetics and perfection is awesome. Great dentist, great office, great staff! I went in this afternoon with a broken tooth of which only a shard was left, and a severely cracked tooth adjacent to it. I have a compromised autoimmune systems (multiple sclerosis and severe allergies) and they were absolutely wonderful. Dr. Wardany may be the most intuitive dentist I've ever been seen by, and the office staff are warm, friendly, and right there to help. You're told exactly what the options are, both in payment and treatments, before anything major is done, and while you're getting the problem taken care of by solid professionals, the staff is taking care of the financial and insurance questions. I have several issues with my teeth, and wanted to go somewhere close and made an appt. with another dentist office, they were so rude even before I walked in there I cancelled. Saw a friend and she said you must go to my dentist Dr. Wardany, you will adore him. Had my first apt. with Dr. Wardany today. Incredible. Welcomed by the nicest staff (at 8 in the morning) even the ones who were not going to be involved with my procedures came up and introduced themselves. Dr. Wardany himself is a gem. He explained everything he was going to do beforehand. And afterwards sat down and gave me all the options we could go through. And best of all for me-never gave me a lecture about letting my teeth go for so long. As I figured that was going to be part of the deal. Very kind and very professional. Not even sure I want to post this, because I'm afraid his office will get too poular and it will be hard to get appointments! I just got back from Dr. Wardany's office for emergency tooth extraction. Last night I was in horrible pain and I googled "emergency dental care". I currently don't have a dentist so I took a shot and called Dr. Wardany's office I called him and left a vm at 7:20pm...I received a called back at 7:25pm. I was in the chair at 9:00 this morning, and out the door by 10. He didn't really have have an open appointment and that's still all the time it took! He get apologizing for taking so long. Whatevs...the office has a great, current magazine collection! He is amazing. His staff is amazing. His office is squeaky clean and cozy. UPDATE: Saw Dr. Wardany as my new dentist due to some tooth sensitivity a few weeks ago. He not only explained things to me but even called me before my follow up to see how I was feeling and if the antibiotic was helping! Now - How's that for a dentist who really cares?!!! I went to see him this week for my check up and progress (luckily, the problem is no more..for now!). Dr. Wardany is a gem and very sincere. His staff, Brittney and Merlet are so pleasant, friendly and helpful. Had some confusion with my dental coverages and they were kind enough to make some calls. All I can say is this: If you want a great dentist with wonderful "bedside" manners, who genuinely cares about you as his patient - GO TO DR. WARDANY! If you want a great dentist with exceptional staffing who treats their patients with lots of kindness and helpfulness....GO TO DR. WARDANY! If you want a great dentist who you want your teeth to grow old with - GO TO DR. WARDANY!
