Close to school, closer than Starbucks, pretty good quality sandwiches, breads, and bagels. The staff is very friendly, I appreciate good service. I like coming here on my breaks from classes at Laney, and if I want some coffee, this is the closest thing around than walking all the way to Starbucks on 8th and Broadway. I don't always come here, but when I do, I get a vanilla latte with lots of foam or a bagel. :) The prices are a bit steep like $7 for a sandwich, but hey support your local businesses! read more

This place rules! Sandwiched between a greaseball donut shop and Laney College is an unpredictably awesome little coffee house called Lane-e Kefa Coffee. It's conveniently located right next to Lake Merritt BART. My first impression was that it is clean and well-lit with nice marble top tables and attractive hardwood floors. Local art adorns the walls and gives the place a laid-back community vibe. They do coffee/espresso drinks, pastries, bagels, breakfast and lunch sandwiches. I like that they use bold, smooth Ethiopian coffee. I always go for their yummy lattes. They're competitively priced and the barista is a cool gal that really knows her stuff. I've been stopping by on my way to BART for a couple of months now, but I just tried a breakfast sandwich for the first time last week. I wasn't expecting a whole lot, but HOLY CRAP. The sandwich in question was called "the Atlantic". It's some kind of sexy combination of fluffy scrambled eggs, smoked salmon, green onions and cream cheese on a crispy English muffin. Since then I've been back for the roast beef with blue cheese and the turkey pesto provolone. Both were obviously made of quality ingredients and served hot on super-fresh French baguettes. These people aren't messng around--they even make their own homemade pesto!! Plus they whip everything up twice as fast as Peerless, Blue Bottle or World Ground and the owner is super-super nice. I didn't know there is a coffee/cafe shop by Lake Merritt Bart Station, until my girlfriend told me. We decide to go in there to have lunch. There are a lot of students eating there during lunch time because it is close by the Laney College. My friends and I order the egg, spanish, swiss sandwiches and it was good, The egg is bigger than the sandwich and I love it so much. it was warm and yummy. My friend told me the coffee is really strong. I would love to go back there to try their coffee again. read more

Weird neighborhood! I just started working across the street from the Lake Merritt BART station, and there is nothing around! Not even a Starbucks to get my daily caffeine! Best free coffee I've ever had! Not sure the price because they were offering free coffee for their grand opening when I went in, but very good. I bought the prosciutto and egg sandwich for 5.50, which was also very good. Lots of egg and prosciutto on a fresh french roll. Also great atmosphere, comfortable chairs and mellow Salsa music. Love this place!! I go every Thursday and Friday morning before my ride picks me up for work and the people are always friendly and welcoming. They have great food and my FAVORITE thing is the cappuccino smoothie. A big plus is the location right by bart, its a perfect rest stop in between my train and ride. read more

I came here for breakfast last Saturday and the vegetarian breakfast sandwich on an english muffin was really good. Very generous portion size. The coffee was also good. Its in a convenient location, next to the Bart station. I plan to come more regularly now that I have discovered it. The wifi was fast and the music was good for working. read more

This is my waiting-for-classes spot. I usually have a Hazelnut latte, and let me tell you: this is some good espresso. I'm always having trouble with baristas overpulling or underpulling shots, or burning my milk... But here, I don't have to worry. Ordered a sandwich and coffee. They sell coffee in branded bags. "Do you guys roast your own coffee?" "Yeah. Except it's roasted in San Francisco. By someone else." "Oh". I picked up my sandwich when it was done and walked to school. Unwrapped and found they'd confused the order. Took it back and when they handed me the new sandwich I checked and found they'd confused it a second time. After getting back to school and unwrapping the third sandwich I found it, again, to be wrong. The coffee was okay. The sandwich was not good. Ingredients of a very poor quality. Dubious turkey and bacon. The house made guacamole slathered on the sandwich (which I hadn't ordered) tasted too strongly of onion, distractingly so. It does not bode well for a lunch spot when they are incapable of preparing a satisfactory sandwich in three tries. read more

This place is great. I like the idea of supporting local businesses. This is a high quality coffee shop. The owner is a sincere, and friendly guy, and it seems like he does most of the work by himself. The food is made fresh with pretty good ingredients. The breakfast sandwiches can be a bit heavy for breakfast (I usually finish only half on my daily BART commute), but the lunch sandwiches are perfect. I'd recommend the Lane-e breakfast sandwich, or the chicken pesto sandwich for lunch. Of, course I'd also highly recommend the coffee. I usually get an Iced Mocha with 4 shots. The coffee is made fresh and the espresso is tasty. You don't have to cover up the taste of coffee with milk or sugar like other places. It seems like they import their own coffee from East Africa and brand it themselves. I give it four stars only because it's a bit slow and the line can grow long. Lane-e Kefa is understaffed but I continue to support them with the hopes that they hire more workers and increase efficiency. read more

I arrived at 7:51, no one was ahead of me, people who were in the cafe were already served. There was a line of people, at least 7 after me. I ordered a sandwich and smoothie. This was the same order I had the first time I was here. I also gave them a tip. 8:05 rolls around and the owner seems concerned. He asked me how my smoothie was, looking confused almost unsure why I was still here. Maybe I should have taken this as a hint that he forgot my order. I said it was fine but I was waiting on my sandwich. One by one he served everyone else their food and I'm still sitting here. Everyone starts to leave. I'm really concerned now. His first response was, they were all ahead of me, um no. I proceeded to show him my reciept, which he refused to look at. I'd been here for almost 20 minutes. Then he "apologized" and made the sandwich in less than 2 minutes. I should have opted for the refund but I didn't have a lunch and this was my meal for the day. Although he gave me a free sandwich coupon, I conveniently lost it as soon as I got on bart and I'm not sure I'd want to go back. Before i arrived at this cafe, I was just telling my partner how convenient it was and how I liked the breakfast. Maybe it wasn't my morning but I think it would have been better if they just admitted the mistake in the first place instead of blame me. This is a java oasis in the mini food desert that surrounds Laney College. Their drinks - caffeinated and non, smoothies included - are delicious, and their sandwiches are even better. The owner greets you with a familiar smile, and he might be caught making your drink or a delicious sandwich. The baristas are friendly as well. Did I say sandwich? I love the breakfast sandwiches because the eggs are actually from a shell (not a carton), they are seasoned and fluffy, and they don't skimp!
