We havent been here in a while and while we were away they changed how you order food to touch screen and/or in person. So, I quickly went to the touch screen and found the beef noodle soup that I had been dreaming about -- i thought i had ordered it spicy and that they came with pickled veggies like the Taiwanese version but I must not have ordered it that way -- either way the soup was nice and brothy, with chunks of braised beef shank. The broth was studded with a couple of diakon slices, and bok choy? or chinese broccoli (i forget now) with the regular noodles. The noodles were bouncy as expected and the broth was flavorful -- so while it was not what i had intended, it was indeed just as good. However, the good doesnt stop here because I am a sucker for XLB and pan fried noodles and this place has both. I wish this place gave sliced ginger for the XLB but nonetheless the XLBs were good. I had moderate success in lifting them out of the steamer basket because of the spoon that i had to use -- perhaps I should ahve asked for a second soup spoon rather than employ the regular tablespoons they have out. I like the filling more than district dumplings BUT, found that i often poked holes in the bottom and all the soup would escape :(. The pan fried buns were good but i felt that the ones I've gotten here previously were better or Yu Noodles had better ones. Their dumplings in chili oil, however; is a whole different story. I love their wontons in chili oil -- everywhere else they have peanut butter in theirs, but this one.... just spicy chili oil. These were probably my favorite wrapped meat item (XLB, pan fried noodle, wonton in chili oil). I ended up using the chili oil and vinegar as part of the sauce for my pan fried buns. I'll be back soon-ish after all its quite close to work... but hopefully I have better luck with my dumpling/bun choices.. and maybe I'll actually order the noodle soup correctly. read more

This is the best noodle spot that I have tried on the DMV here. We drive all the way from Virginia to come here. The hand pulled noodles are fresh and tasty. I usually get the stir fry seafood or shrimp noodles. They use very little oil and have a mild flavoring since the noodles of the dish are the star. My wife loves their lamb soup with noodles. The lamb broth is very tasty. They have good chicken fried rice and well. The chicken is soft and tender. The rice is tasty. It is fun to watch the noodles being pulled in front of you. Flavors on point! Very good and tasty food, didn't even have the chance to take a lot of pics of the different dishes we ordered because we were just very excited about the food. I loved the smoky flavor of their fried rice. The pork and chive dumplings were very very good. Now, they could do better with the service. The floor staff was not so friendly and they looked bored. I also noticed that one of them was wearing EarPods and he had to remove them every time someone asked him something. Also a couple of dishes were forgotten and we had to ask twice for about them. They could also do better with their little self-service station for water, sauces, and silverware. It was a little messy and they could add more sauces or simply have a better system for that. This is my favorite place for pulled noodle soup. It's located in the Rio shopping area in Gaithersburg, MD right across from the Dick's Sporting Goods store. The dining room is small (only a dozen tables or so with one or two outside tables to the left side of the restaurant) and the decor is just simple tables and chairs but it's clean and they don't really need fancy decor here. The food is not fancy but it's really good quality and speaks for itself. The kitchen is open so you can see them cook your order. You order at the register and they give you a number to put at your table and they bring your order out to you. The staff is very nice and they are quick with bringing out your order. You grab silverware, napkins, etc yourself Their roast duck noodle soup with thin hand pulled noodles is my favorite and I get it every time I go. They actually pulled the noodles by hand! Personally I know it's not a huge deal but I really didn't want thin but much preferred thick noodles in my soup. So I asked the cashier and staff if I could get a swap (note I haven't touched the bowl yet), and they said no. So I had to just eat the bowl I had which I didn't end up enjoying. So I understand if it was my own fault why this request could be seen as unreasonable, but in this situation I find that this was a bit cheap. I didn't expect them to deny me the switch because at most restaurants I've been to they're usually pretty good about that. Also as to the food? It was okay. Honestly I think I've had better Hot Beef Noodle Soup at places like A&J. They are hand pulled and made though, so if you're in the area and really craving your noodles, then it's a decent choice. Honestly this is a little difficult for me to write because I was very excited to go in tonight for the first time. First, my boyfriend and I ordered wide noodles at the front and with the style of payment the restaurant asks for tip as you pay with card (weird but fair). Food comes out, clearly not wide noodles but we just wanted to triple check with service members of the restaurant. Which leads to my second point-- Service was unacceptable. I had tried to flag down 4 people in a restaurant that was not busy! 3 servers up front, one had Beats Headphones, 1 other man that was watching the floor. Ended up taking the bowl to the counter where all 3 servers told me the noodles I had were wide. Mind you, this was not my boyfriends first time here so we were both confused when skinny noodles came out and slightly irritated at the unprofessional staff. Lots of opportunity especially in this neighborhood but guest perception was unprofessional and the restaurant seemed like it was being run by young teenagers. My boyfriends family had come here multiple times in the past and said it felt like an authentic boutique Chinese restaurant which made me excited. I live within walking distance (5-6 min drive at most) and by the time I got home and started to eat, I found that the food was cold. The dumplings seemed to be frozen and re-heated because when I went to take a bite, it was full of water/juice and squirted everywhere. The noodles seemed a little mushy and overcooked. Delicious, authentic, hand-pulled noodles in the DMV. I can't help but compare this place to A&J since Taiwanese beef/tendon noodle soup is one of my favorite dishes. While I grew up going to A&J and it'll always have a special place in my heart, Lanzhou Hand-Pulled Noodle serves some great competition in the area. When you walk in, you get to watch the noodles being pulled right in front of you. It's a fast casual spot where you order at the counter and take your number to a table. The ambiance is clean and bright. People don't linger - it's a get in, slurp, get out kind of place. We ordered the PAN FRIED PORK BUNS which were delicious and had a huge amount of juicy pork inside. The condiments (soy sauce, black vinegar, chili oil, etc., are next to the beverage fountain). For noodles, you can choose from hand pull or knife slice. If you choose hand pull, you can pick from a range of widths. I opted for the regular width and BEEF COMBINATION SOUP. They bring out the soups pretty quickly. The beef combination soup is piping hot, authentic and, best of all, tastes clean. Nothing too greasy or heavy here. Add some of the chili oil and it's the perfect broth. I believe it's the largest portion size for beef noodle soup in the area. They even give so much beef/tendon that I had to distribute my leftover meat around the table. I had a bite of my brother's stir-fry knife slice noodles which were great as well, although slightly soupy at the bottom. The noodles are thicker, chewier, and shorter in length. Highly recommend this place. In the three times I've gone, I can't bring myself to order something other than the beef combination noodle soup. My heart is heavy - this is difficult for me to say, but the quality of the experience at Lanzhou has truly fallen off a cliff. I ordered takeout in the middle of summer 2021 (no indoor seating due to COVID), and ordered the stir-fried noodles and pan-fried pork buns since soup would have been too hot for a humid Maryland day. Unfortunately, the AC was not on in the waiting area (either broken or to save money) and so there was close to 0 airflow in what felt like a 95 degree sauna. There were no other customers waiting, and I should've taken that as a sign of what was to come. What previously were nicely-made fresh cut QQ noodles became a sloppy, goopy mess. The stir-fried noodles tasted slightly mushy and it felt reminiscent of microwaved leftover lo-mein. So sad. Then, I take a bite of my pan-fried pork bun, and even though there was a nice crisp to the bun on the initial bite, I was immediate struck with this minty flavor in the meat filling - very very discombobulating. I am usually a forgiving man willing to give places second chances, but I think COVID really did a number on this restaurant. This spot had so much potential...but I will likely not be returning in the future. The steam dumplings were delicious especially with their dumpling sauce mixed with a little hot oil! I can't say I was a fan of the knife sliced mixed beef tendon noodle dish. Weekday Lunch Review: Beef Noodle Soup (thick/knife cut) - (a bit too) chewy noodles, tender beef, fresh veggies. My only complaint is that the broth was a tad bland and the raddish did not compliment the dish. Fried Scallion Pancake - Served hot and fresh, but a tad on the oily and soft side personally. Semi-clean place with a steady progression of people as lunch really rolled into the noon time frame. No doubt the food is made fresh, but this is not the most kid-friendly place (I brought my tot and we both just had to deal with her crawling all over the bench as I didn't see any high chairs) Minus 1 Star - Terrible Service. Even considering that it is a Chinese Fastaurant, I didn't want to be treated like the bottom of someone's shoe. The high school kids acted like everything anyone asked them was a bother. Minus 1 Star- A/C was broken. Don't get me wrong, I can drink/eat hot soup on a hot day like the best of them, but seeing the 2 spot coolers that we're doing absolutely, nothing while I was trying to eat lunch and look after my tot sweating uncomfortably was no bueno. I ordered the beef noodle soup with regular noodles and had baozi to share. We waited quite a while, maybe 20 mins, for the food but it was fine since they seemed to have their hands full with customers. The broth of the soup is really light but flavorful at the same time, which is so hard to find. It tasted very authentic and the noodles were also the perfect consistency. The meat was tender and flavorful, and vegetables were good too. Probably the best Chinese noodle soup I've had in the DMV. The baozi was super oily but cooked well. Nice modern place in Rio with lots of customers! You go up to order, and they bring the food to your table. SO wanted to try their noodles, since lanzhou is known for their hand pulled noodles. We did come to the right place! Haven't had proper hand pulled noodles since college, and not many options around here. Prices are fairly reasonable considering the supply (I've had better for cheaper though). The broth has a very strong daikon taste for both noodles we got (bf got beef combo). I'm not too impressed with the pork meat in my broth, but the beef in my boyfriend's bowl is very tender and juicy. The noodles were on point they got the texture right for sure. They don't stick together, they're chewy, and the taste paired with the broth makes it perfect. Shengjianbao I was eh about - it's not bad but it's lacking the juice that I'm used to. Overall, pretty cheap eats in a nice environment, but I've had better. This general area makes it a good date place to go to though! read more

Great example of a restaurant that has just a few options on the menu, but executes then very well. Fresh, hand-pulled (it is in the name!) noodles, in stir fry or in soup, while you wait. Noodles come in pulled or knife-cut - Toddler K preferred the pulled, with the exceptional soy based stir fry sauce. I'm a fan of the knife cut, half inch ribbons of exceptionally fresh pasta. Broth for the soups is very tasty, and the meats (tried both pork and beef) were tender and flavorful. Stir fry veg was very crisp and fresh. Best part of our meal was the steamed pork buns - they had that pan-crisped bottom that was full of flavor and the meat inside had quite a bit of gelatin to make it very tender and unctuous. Extra bonus - love the the self-service condiment set up and the self serve water station. They also have the good crunchy ice. If I could change anything, it would be to offer more canned drink options. Don't generally dig sugary sodas, would have like a few seltzers. read more

Staff were all very nice and kind, and they have a self-service station with sauces/condiments and utensils and such. The only downside to this place is it's location - I imagine/hope the owners will use the profit they earn over the next year to move into a larger restaurant space. It's was crowded inside with very few seating options. Walking area is minimal as well. Their bar-styled seating near the register does have outlets for phone-charging which was somewhat entertaining. We waited about 25 minutes from the time we ordered to the time we were served. The deliciousness of the food made it all worth it, but I'll probably return for a special occasion or during slow hours only. The good news: the Roast Duck and Beef Brisket soups were excellent. Large portions. Rich broth. Lots of noodles, BokChoy and scallion plus the appropriate meat. I also ordered a side of the Fried Chive Dumplings. Flavorful, hot and browned. This is a counter service or kiosk ordered eatery so it's take away or eat-in casually. I will be back. Really tasty noodles here. I got noodle soup and it was delicious but the stir fried noodles looked REALLY good. I'll have to come back so I can try them. They have an open kitchen so you can watch them prepare everything fresh. The portions are more than enough to make you full. I recommend the skinny noodles for soup. The broth is very tasty. The service was also good. There's not a ton of room to sit inside so it's a little hectic. If you can manage to snag a table, all the natural light inside is nice. Overall, good experience. Granted, they're still in soft opening mode. It's still pretty darn amazing. My mother said she's coming back and would come here for snacks... that's pretty high praise considering she's so picky with Chinese food. If they keep their level this high, they're sure to do well! Also, we ate so much food that we needed a walk and it's the perfect setting for that since it's in a shopping center with our favorite neighborhood lake! We started out with one of every side dish which since their menu is changing a bit due to soft opening, that was chive pork dumplings, beef dumplings, scallion pancake and the pork pan fried baos(bun). The pork buns and pork dumplings have literally the same filling, so it really depends on your palette. My mother loved the buns while my sister and I preferred the dumplings. The dumplings were juicer where the buns soaked up all the juice and made the bun very sweet. We then had a second round of food with stir fried beef hand cut noodles, ox tail hand cut noodle soup and sea food knife cut noodle soup. Those noodles are on point. I don't care what anyone else thinks. These noodles are exactly as they're supposed to be. I definitely preferred the ox tail soup broth better than the seafood broth, the ox tail broth was just so flavorful. The seafood soup was delicious though and had a very subtle flavor. I believe this place was technically still in their soft-opening phase when I visited, so I'm hoping that things will improve as they figure out their kinks. Here's what I liked and some areas they can improve on: The good: - Station where you can fill your own water, mix your own sauces, grab your own utensils, etc. - Relatively easy menu to order from (this menu seems to have changed a few times already since their first opening day btw). - The kitchen seems very open and you can watch the chefs physically pull the noodles from windows. - Dishes were decently priced. - Noodles had a good consistency; I tried the regular hand pulled noodles and next time I want to try the knife cut ones! The bad: - No visible menu above the cash register. What happened to it? Some customers had pictures of it but when I went, it was empty. - Servers almost just throwing down the bowls/plates on the table before moving on. - The space is too crowded. One of the servers who is slightly bigger, kept bumping into customers as he tried to walk between tables to deliver food - No effort to thoroughly clean off the tables in between customers. You don't need to wait to be seated as it is more "counter service" but it was annoying to wait for someone to come by to clear off the bowls but not at least do a wipe down of the table. - Stir fry noodles were pretty salty. - Scallion pancakes were more "dough-y" than flaky or crispy. The ugly: - I spotted multiple water cups with very visible food chunks still attached on it. Gross. Please wash everything better!! - While I didn't personally witness this, a friend told me that he saw the dough touch the ground when the chef was stretching it. I really hope this is not true, but thought that it is important to note since he's not going to write a review himself. I came here on their second day after their grand opening wanted to check this place out after hearing about it for a while. Everything was very clean and it was spacious with ample seating. There's also a seat close by the kitchen where you could watch the chefs cook. When you walk in, there is a front counter where you place your order and then you are given a number and can sit down at any table available. It is more of a casual dining vs a sit down, but it does take a while for the food to come out. We ordered the char siu noodles (only had a couple of pieces) and the beef brisket noodles. I am familiar with the variety of hand made noodles (thinner hand pulled noodles and the wide and thicker hand shaven noodles). When we ordered, the front staff did not mention the different noodle options and I asked about it and she said that they had them. I think it would be helpful to include the different noodle types for those who might not be familiar with hand made noodles. The pan fried dumplings were pretty good and I would get them again! Came here today for lunch because my daughter wanted dumplings. Boom- here we are with some fantastic pan fried pork dumplings and a bowl of regular hand-pulled noodles with chicken. We received the noodles first (easily enough for two, if you're not starving). I loved it. The flavor was simple but well done. The noodles were tender with just a bit of "chew." The pork and chive dumplings were bursting with flavor and the perfect texture of soft and fried. This side dish came out much later than the noodles. I wasn't sure if that was to be expected, or if it was a mistake. Either way, it was delicious. My 8 year old finished the plate after sharing some of my noodles. Came in on a Sunday afternoon and this place was packed. My girlfriend and I read reviews and they were all across the spectrum so I figured it was time to come in and see what the hype or lack of hype was about. I will say I wasn't as impressed with the pancakes and pork buns. I think the pancakes were oily and I have had better at other places. The pork buns weren't bad but I thought the pork could use more flavor. For my main, I did like the beef stir fry. I think I did make a mistake though in not getting a meat and soup combo with noodles. After trying my girlfriends I thought the broth was good and better than what I got.
