Some things you expect to be spicy aren't like pad Thai but you can ask for chili oil on the side. If you like the standard Americanized Chinese food this is going to hit the spot. I found things to be very sweet and lacking in spices. When you order hot and sour soup you don't expect sweet and sour. We came here for their lunch special where there's a lot of items to choose from! I give it a 3.5 stars for their food and 4 for their excellent service. After the waiter takes your order, 5 minutes later your soup and appetizer is served (included, no extra charge) you have a choice of hot and sour or egg drop soup) I chose the hot and sour, it was delicious! I ordered the Pad See Ew with beef (the beef was very tender and the rice noodles were very tasty and not dry at all), my husband had the Mongolian Beef with rice, and my friend had the Pork fried rice (it look good and a huge portion too)! Good place for Thai and Asian. It's all in the name. Yummy Bowl is good but not great but it's more affordable than most places in Highland Park though. Come for lunch to get a deal. They have a lot of vegetarian friendly options to choose from. At lunch on a weekday is the best time to come. It has the best prices. They have a lot of lunch specials. It's about $10 each. The portions have gotten smaller though. I had the Thai Cashew. This comes with a choice of protein, and I got tofu. She got the Pad Thai, which looked basic. The food had a good spice but not much else flavor to be honest. For sure it's one of the more affordable places around here to eat. It also means it's not one of the better places as far as food. They have some choices such as choosing the protein of tofu in items that can be made for vegans and vegetarians. read more

We came here on a weekend after reading the great reviews and we were pleasantly seated right away. Only a few tables were occupied and they were not very busy for a Saturday night. Our server took our order and within a few minutes (less than 5 minutes) our order of chicken fried rice and Mongolian beef arrived. The speed of our order arriving gave me an uneasy feeling that turned into more concern when the chicken in our fried rice looked like it was boiled and tasted rubbery, and the Mongolian beef was extremely dry rendering it inedible. The coke I had ordered was flat and lacked flavor so our server brought out an unopened can instead without hesitation as if he knew the machine had run out of syrup. Americanized Cantonese food is so ubiquitous, we assumed from its name that Yummy Bowl would be "just another chop suey joint." We anticipated a tiny, nondescript storefront, but what greeted us was an expansive and attractively decorated dining room. In fact, the restrooms are so distant, I thought I had crossed the border into the next town! We and our friends were seated at a large round table with a lazy susan. Few others were dining in on this post-pandemicThursday evening, but carryout orders kept emerging from the kitchen. The extensive menu lists many pan-Asian dishes including Thai in addition to the usual Cantonese warhorses. Diners on a vegan or gluten-free diet will find plenty to indulge in here. There are no dinner add-ons; everything including tea is à la carte. When my Missus debated adding a bowl of soup to her order, our server cut her off with, "That's enough food!" We didn't know if he was joking or serious! Apps and soups were straightforward, so I'll fast-forward to the entrées. The orange beef, orange chicken, sesame shrimp, Happy Family, and pepper tomato beef were fresh and impeccably well prepared. We took home an order of beef fried rice to enjoy the next day. The food at YB has been consistently excellent throughout the years. It seems portions, pre-pandemic were larger, and to-go containers were "packed" with food. Now, with prices for food higher and eating-out portions smaller in general... Yummy Bowl prices have indeed gone up while portions seem smaller. What once could have been sufficient for two, covers one strong appetite. I've no clue if some businesses/restaurants have NEEDED to shrink portions, or if "greed-inflation" is at play. Some businesses seem to have no singular reason for price increases or portion decreases. This used to be one of my favorite Chinese restaurants. Recipes have unfortunately changed. Very sad because I have been ordering from yummy bowl for years. The egg rolls are now frozen pre-bought and the chicken tastes like rubber. I heard from others that the recipes were different but decided to try for myself. The egg drop soup was not edible. When I asked the owner why the eggrolls and food was different they said that the eggrolls are a different recipe, I asked if they were bought in and frozen and they said yes and now this is what they have.. everything was noticeably different and not good. Very disappointing because yummy bowl had the best eggrolls. The chicken dishes were horrible as well. It's evident that the owners are trying to possibly cut costs by purchasing eggrolls and premade chicken...I wish that the owners would respect their dedicated customers and just sell the restaurant with original recipes Instead of cutting costs and destroying the restaurant with horrible food, they owe to their customers. read more

So I ordered from Yummy Bowl and it's been about 2-3 years since I've ordered take out or dined in. Have driven by and it always appears like they're closed or no one seems to be dining in, so it seems sad since I've had some fond memories of this place. I ordered delivery this time and the food was just plain...how can I put this...um, not good...at all. I'm being generous in giving two stars bcoz an older delivery driver was so nice and apologetic for being a bit late (which he wasn't). I wanted to order safe things so we ordered their veggie egg rolls which from memory was really good. Not this time. The egg rolls shrank and it was kinda tasty, but not really. Ok they sucked. Mongolian beef was ok but was more onion than beef and def needed more flavor. The fried rice was also lacking in flavor and soy sauce. The worst dish was the chicken egg foo young. Wtf?! It was 3 patties of greasy fried egg and in a separate container was the chicken pieces, bean sprouts and gravy. It was like a deconstructed egg foo young and didn't work at all. A total throw away, right in the garbage disposal!! What a complete let down. I'm sorry but I didn't lose my sense of taste during COVID thank God but I cannot recommend this place. Just a brief update...I'm a huge Yummy Bowl fan for their consistency. My last few orders have been for lunch, and today with the new COVID-19 rules (no dine in), I ordered online and opted for curbside pick up instead of going inside to grab my order. THEY TAKE COVID SERIOUSLY HERE! When I placed my order over the phone, they told me to come for curbside and pulled up to one of the three curbside parking spots out front and called for my order. They brought it to the passenger side window and reached in and politely said, "I am putting it on the floor now." So careful and cautious while masked. My regular go-to is shrimp fried rice, chicken fried rice, and chicken egg rolls. Always hot, packed with mini shrimp and chicken, and delicious! And, there's always enough for leftovers. Having been a loyal customer of Yummy Bowl for over 20 years, I am dismayed at the downturn in cooking expertise over the past year. While the ingredients seem to be of high quality, many dishes are laden in far too much oil. I have ordered a wide variety of the menu over the years and have lately seen an inconsistency of preparation. Some Szechwan and Hunan dishes are often sickeningly sweet (almost to dessert standards). The egg rolls, a favorite with any order have turned into soft skinny logs dripping in grease. The name says it all. Everything I've had here is yummy! I would have to say: this is one of the best Chinese Restaurants on the North Shore. This is a clean, well-maintained, large space. The tables all have a fresh sheet of butcher paper. I like that. I've only eaten here at lunch time. All the lunch specials are around $8 or so. All come with generous portions, and I believe most (if not all) come with soup, an egg-roll, and crab rangoon. Everything I've had here is good. I really enjoy the Sesame Chicken. This is an excellent Chinese/Thai restaurant that has a lot of variety, but I just went with Chinese-style dishes to taste. I tried the egg drop soup, pork potstickers, kung bao chicken, triple sichuan delight, and moo shu pork. For the egg drop soup, it was seasoned well and the eggs were nice and velvety. The pork potstickers were also really good. Crispy dumpling skin and flavorful filling was delicious and I appreciated the prevelant taste of ginger in the dumplings. For the moo shu pork, the pork was very tender and flavorful with it having the sweet salty flavor that combines well with the moo shu crepes. I very much recommend the moo shu pork as this place makes it very well. For the other two dishes, I appreciate that this place understands what a chili pepper sign next to a menu item is supposed to represent. I can't think of enough times where I've gotten a spicy Chinese dish and I can barely taste any spiciness which always disappoints me. The two dishes I had were perfectly spicy to the point of sinuses being cleared. The triple sichuan delight had the combination of beef, chicken, and shrimp with just a delicious and tantalizing sauce that makes me want to order here again. Kung bao chicken was also amazing and perfectly spicy. Definately get both these dishes again as well as others. Egg foo young patties were bizarrely small, plain, and almost surely not fresh, with the protein served separately. Large party and all agreed the food was worthy only of the garbage bin. When will diners of this area stop being okay with happily accepting whatever slop they're served? Apart from Abigail's in Highland Park, good luck finding a restaurant which is genuinely worth eating at. So I haven't been here in oh, say, 15 years or so. This place was not good back then. So I am so glad I tried it again. I've been hearing some good things from my fellow "locals" and they were right! I came here for a lunch meeting. They have a huge selection of choices on their lunch menu. With most, you get soup, app (egg roll and a crab rangoon), and a nice size entree.... and a fortune and almond cookie. I'm trying to be healthy :-P so I got shrimp and veggies with brown rice. I asked for it steamed. It was perfect, and just what I wanted. The shrimp was plentiful, firm, and a nice size. Not fishy at all. There was a very good variety of veggies too. I came home and told hubby we must go back for dinner. I also just happened to notice on the way home that our usual asian place closed, so this will be a perfect place to try again for dinner! read more

Chicken & broccoli, with almost no broccoli and all green pepper? Basil chicken, with all green beans and no basil? Chicken fried rice, with two small slices of chicken in a sea of rice?
