Not your average Mexican food! LaPaz is a step above the typical Mexican restaurants that you're used to. The waitstaff are prompt, friendly, and leave you with a sense that they actually care about their work. We started off with chips salsa and queso, which ended up being some of the better queso dips I've had out of any restaurant. We also got the chicken and spinach suizas and shrimp quesadillas. I thoroughly enjoyed the suizas (I never had them before) and recommend them to anyone. The shrimp quesadillas are full of flavor and there were plenty of shrimp! Both meals had more than enough food for anyone, we ended up getting to-go boxes. If you're looking for better quality Mexican food with a casual/traditional setting, I highly recommend trying this out. read more

Solid Mexican restaurant with good food & drinks! I had the blackberry swirl margarita to drink. It wasn't very strong but it was tasty. The queso with chorizo was really good, big portion. For my entree I had shrimp tamales and they were really yummy. I applaud this restaurant for their ability to handle huge parties with ease. We had around 15 people in our party and everything came out at the same time and it was all correct & it was quick! If you've ever read any of my reviews, you know I lurve me some Mexican. And the biggest struggle moving to Bham from Dallas, Texas is the lack of good Tex-Mex. Sure there are plenty of Mexican restaurants around town.. some that claim to be more authentic and less chainy (is that a word?) than others... but seriously, I haven't found my go to place. Which is a huge disappointment. Like Brian wrote in 2012, not much has changed since then. The meal was completely unforgettable and bland. Seriously, the highlight was the salsa. I had the Santa Fe Enchilada - there was absolutely no green Chile sauce, even though the menu said it should be "smothered" in said sauce. Because there was no sauce, the enchilada was dry and a struggle to swallow. Ughh.. do yourself a favor and skip this place. I've come here for 30 years and I love the food. However, the last THREE times that I've done takeout/delivery, they have forgotten an item. Usually I wouldn't mind, but charging the $ they do for a burrito sort of makes you irritated. Come on, please check the orders before letting them leave the delivery room. read more

Don't sit at the bar unless you want to be ignored and take forever to even order a water. The past few times I have been here the service has been downhill. Good thing is that El Cazador is close by and can serve you immediately. La Paz has a great location but without quality service they are quickly putting a sour taste in my mouth. Not a good time, unfortunately. I have been here before, a little less than a year ago and it was really good. Maybe I came on an off night, but this was not liked I remember. The atmosphere was good, not really busy, but a crowd was coming in. We were looking for an outdoor seat and received one about 10 minutes after we arrived. A young lady came over with with chips and never introduced herself or greeted us. We thought she was the initial person that brings the chips and salsa so when she came back, it surprised me a little. We ordered the ceviche for an appetizer and our entrees at the same time. The Sante Fe enchiladas were average and Luke warm. Nothing really memorable about it. Tastes under spiced and the egg was over cooked. The ceviche never came out either, which bummed out. Yes, yes, yes. This place is a huge favorite for my whole family and I can see why. First, the queso. WHITE QUESO. It was awesome with a slight bit of heat to it but it was just enough. It's super thick which would borderline be an issue because you end up with so much on a chip, BUT they give you a really large bowl (praise) so you can eat all the queso your heart desires. Second, the margaritas. They are perfect and strong. I'll leave it at that. Third, the food. Every single person in my family has loved everything they've gotten here, with special raves about the fish tacos. I got two enchiladas (beef and chicken) that came with rice and beans, thinking it would be a normal amount of food because enchiladas are pretty small, right? No, I don't know that I've ever been served so much food. It was so much and I couldn't finish alone. This was the same for everyone's meals across the board - large portions, but it makes what you pay for worth it. The service was good and the atmosphere is nice. For the award winning queso it was good, but the $8 bowl with chorizo was not enough for 3+ people. I've had better queso. These people do not know good customer service even when not busy. We must have got a bad waitress because she made the experience subpar and came off rude. When we ordered she told us there were no tamales and she could tell that my mother was disappointed. She went to go double check and then she came back pissed off and snapped at my mother saying that "she tried she tried." It was extremely awkward for the whole table like she was about to have a nervous break down. The steak, chicken, and bacon wrapped shrimp fajita was delicious as well as the Cancun burger. It was huge. However the combination plates were a little basic and the chicken suiza was just OK. The food gets four out of five stars but the waitress was awful. When we finished eating the waitress came and said oh you're finished already and then she never came back we never saw her again. We sat there waiting over 20 minutes for a check and had to grab some other passing by waiter to get it for us. When that new waiter went to go ring up our check, I saw the waitress run over had to him and whisper to him while he was processing the payment. The whole time we were waiting, I saw the waitress at the bar and saw her make at least seven drinks and never came to bring us our check or say goodbye or thanks. That woman ruined the experience for us, but we still tipped. Would not recommend to anyone else it is not the best Mexican in Birmingham and is not authentic. read more

The queso is delicious - not your typical cheese dip. I get the combination with a beef enchilada or burrito and the chicken chimichanga. They put verde sauce on the chimichanga and it is delicious. The chicken inside is not basic shredded chicken. Everything is seasoned well. This is definitely a more expensive Mexican restaurant but the food is higher-end and good portions!! read more

I'm surprised at some of the poor ratings for this restaurant. I eat there often for lunch and have never had a negative experience with either the food or the service. The food is great, portions are generous and the wait staff is very attentive. I usually get the Tacos De Arrancheras. I still can't pronounce it, but this dish is really good. It has bacon... After a show, we chose La Paz off the late night list-- open to 10 on week nights. La Paz has the best queso dip in town and red and green salsas both yummy! Have had good margaritas, but not tonight. Server was nice but a bit distracted at times. The menu isn't the creative one of the old days. My tamarind BBQ salad was somewhat bland, but improved with addition of salt. Watery ranch on side, but plenty of chicken, avocado slices. My husband was not impressed with his chimichanga. Atmosphere: La Paz does a fine job creating a good atmosphere inside with great decorations, a cool building, warm lighting, and high quality tables and plating. Unfortunately, the atmosphere is ruined by a very loud radio with speakers all over the restaurant that, when I was there, was blasting Top 40 garbage from the 80s and early 90s. There is something deeply troubling about eating Latin food, or any food for that matter, to Wham. Food: Grossly overpriced and unoriginal. For the same price you can get better Latin cuisine from La Cantina or Sol y Luna in town, or for even cheaper and more authentic, try out Gordos on Valley Road (you need to be able to speak Spanish.) The margaritas are decent but extremely overpriced. Unfortunately, La Paz is typical of a privately owned mid-level restaurant in an expensive part of town. The inside is dressed up to be a nice dining experience, but the food is mediocre at best, with only the high prices to try to convince you that the food is good. Final word: Not worth it, but if meeting a group of friends there or on a business lunch, you'll survive and leave full. read more

This was adequate Mexican - I had a taco salad with chicken and it was perfectly fine. I love their salsa, both red and green - everything else I've tried at La Paz has always been just fine. When my children were toddlers, I enjoyed coming here for two reasons - first, most other parents with toddlers were here (at night), so my daughters could see play friends. Wow. How amazingly unforgettable can a meal be? We ordered Baja Fish Tacos and Shrimp Poblano. The Shrimp Poblano sounded promising but what arrived at the table looked like a pile of mess. It was a multi-colored mound of food covered in gooey cheese. After donning climbing gear, and a hazmat suit, I ventured into the dish and discovered the shrimp... nicely seared on one side and uncooked on the other. Luckily it tasted better than it looked. The pepper was cooked nicely but the mega dump of cheese overpowered the shrimp. The coconut rice was nice and fluffy and the beans were okay but certainly not great. The shrimp tacos were better although the condiments were sloppily added. Two tacos had nice slices of avocado and none in the third. Overpriced, under seasoned, unoriginal and a waiter who seemed bothered that we didn't want an appetizer and ordered water to drink. There is much better in the 'ham. read more

Can't believe some of the bad reviews for LA Paz. Here's my take on the meal my fiancé and I enjoyed yesterday evening. We arrived at approx 8pm. It wasn't busy but it wasn't dead either making for a bit atmosphere. We were promptly brought chips and salsa. There red salsa is so Morish it tastes fresh and has a good level of spice. Fresh salsa in some Mexican restaurants is hard to find. We ordered a couple of margaritas to start with. I got the swirl which is Margherita mixed with sangria. I usually don't drink fruity drinks but I was in the mood so what the hell, yolo. It was actually really good so good that my fiancé actually ditched her original drink order and got one too. After chatting away about world politics and whether the value of tertiary education is overrated we ordered some meals. I got the Arizona quesadilla whilst my fiancé got the steak fajitas. Both meals arrived promptly and had good but not great flavour. Word of warning the portion sizes are huge plan of getting something you will enjoy for breakfast or lunch the next day. You get great value for money. Big shout out to our server she was excellent. She was extremely friendly and provided great customer service. We were all chatting away as if we had known each other for years. For those wondering there is indoor and outdoor seating for those al fresco diners. I'll be back. Till next time read more

So I got great service here, and my boyfriend swears by La Paz, but I wasn't particularly overwhelmed by anything. The chips and salsa were great, because you got typical salsa as well as tomatillo salsa. For the entree I got the chicken tostadas. Can't exactly remember what kind, but they were so plain compared to the menu description. There was no sauce on them whatsoever, so three bites in of chicken and tortilla my mouth was dry. It's been a while since we've eaten at La Paz. The menu has been updated but my favorites were still available. Had a Texas Margarita and it was amazing. Still made from scratch. The fish taco platter was fresh and delicious. Our server, Jimmie was great, super friendly, attentive. So refreshing these days. One thing I always pay attention to when I eat out is the cleanliness of the dining area. I will not revisit an establishment if the dining area is filthy (Sumo - yuck!) La Paz has a clean dining room and I even saw a person wiping down window sills, chair backs and seats. I love this place! read more
