I brought in my gaming laptop, which would not turn on. I received a call back with a quote of $500. When I said it was more than I wanted to spend, I was asked what my budget was! I said $200, he then offered $350. I said no and I would pick it back up. He called back 2 seconds later and offered $250. Half off the initial quote! The device was repaired but these guys don't charge an honest fee for honest work. They look at your device to see how much they can try and take you for. My initial first experience with 'LaptopMD' 247 W 38th St Manhattan. Problem: I could not receive Wi-Fi / internet in my bedroom after buying/installing/configuring a brand new Router. I had bought a new NETGEAR router and configured it perfectly with the help of NETGEAR upper level techs. It "worked perfectly with my cell phone", but did not connect to my HP laptop 7 to 8 feet from the router. I took the laptop to 'LaptopMD' a quick walk from my apt. First I was told "the WI-Fi connection works okay here in out shop".... "if we have to replace both the hard drive plus the Win 11 software it would be $250.00.... if we only have to replace/reload Windows 11 it would be $175.00... leave the unit here and we'll call you in a few days". They called and said "nothing wrong with the hard drive, we can replace Win 11 on your unit".... I agreed and paid $175.00. 2 days later when I brought my laptop top home and reconnected everything, I still had no Wi-Fi/internet connection through the router (even if it worked with my cell phone). LaptopMD then said "we can send someone to your apartment to trouble shoot for $50.00"... I agreed and a very nice young Man came but could not solve the problem, he took my laptop back to the shop... 2 days later they called me and suggested selling me a $25.00 Wi-Fi dongle which "should solve the problem"... I paid $25.00 for the dongle and BAM I had my Wi-Fi/internet connection back immediately. The version of Windows 11 they reinstalled on my laptop was 3 versions behind the current most version (which I had to update to). I'm out $175.00 and lost data when they reinstalled Win 11. They should have suggested/sold me the $25.00 dongle to begin with. I'll never go back there again. read more

I had a data recovery issue on an external hard drive. I dropped it off on a Friday and they told me they would diagnose and let me know on Tuesday. Meanwhile, I have a pressing deadline where I need the data. I didn't hear anything until I called on Tuesday around 4:30-5:00pm. They told me that they could only not go any further until I paid $195.00 to open the hard drive and scan it. They also told me that they would not guarantee that the scan would be successful. I asked them, how long would the scan take. They could not give me an answer. I said a few days, a week? I told them, it would be very rare if the scan took more than a few hours. They finally said it would take a couple of hours and they would call me in the morning. No one called, so I called them in the afternoon and they said, the technician working on your file is not in yet. I told them the scan only takes a few hours and I've dropped of the drive on a Friday and now it is Wednesday of the next week. They did not apologize and explained that "technology takes time"... which is insulting as I am a IT computer professional. Wednesday near close of business, I received an email stating that the drive was unrecoverable. I think they knew that on Tuesday and had already scanned the drive, but wanted to get the $195.00 in their pocket to perform "the scan". SHADY. I had been a long-time customer for more than 10 years- but my recent experience with their service and the attitude of the staff was horrible and unacceptable. Sent in my 2014 Macbook Air to have the motherboard replaced. Got quoted an pretty high amount for how old the laptop is, $375. When it was in their possession they told me the battery was bad and added another $100 to already ridiculous quote. It took me 5 months to pay the whole invoice. It took me this long because they would not guarantee the laptop is running optimally. So I was not about to pay $500+ for something that wasn't guaranteed to work properly, but over time I paid it off. So when I finally got the laptop back the processor was running so hot no apps would run and the battery was dead. So in conclusion I paid $500+ to this business and received back a broken laptop. I should have asked if what troubleshooting they did and why they thought a Windows reinstall would fix the problem, but I was too trusting. Did they check for bad RAM? A bad motherboard? Who knows. Anyway, they reinstalled Windows and I brought it home and it very quickly started crashing again. I got a Windows notification that an update was available, so I tried to download and install it, and got the same error message I had been getting before I took it in. Last year (Summer of 2022), I accidentally spilled a fruit drink on my HP laptop, inadvertently damaging my keyboard. I tried to clean the keyboard myself, which didn't work in my favor as I broke one of the keys. After some months of not having not using the Laptop, I decided to have the keyboard repaired. I shopped around, came across Laptop MD, and decided to try them. They looked it over and said the keyboard was replaceable. I dropped it off on ( February 2023) Friday, and by Monday, my Laptop was ready for pickup. I was utterly surprised because I was under the impression it would take a while due to the keyboard's color (deep purple). I assumed they'd have to place a particular order, which would take at least one week. I did not believe for one second think they would slap on just anything in sight to replace what I originally had, as I asked beforehand about the model's color. However, I was assured they would replace it with the same color. They did a fantastic job. Turnaround time was excellent, the replaced keyboard worked great, and fixing it was worth every penny. I recommend them to anyone in need of laptop repair. Also, good people, cover your keyboard with a silicon keyboard cover to avoid liquid damage. Lesson learned. read more

Update: After a few days of back and forth, it turns out the repair was misdiagnosed. I was told before approving the repair that the problem was a faulty chipset--after paying, coming home, having the same problem, and calling several times over the next few days, I learned that the main problem was a faulty CMOS battery. I have a fresh CMOS battery sitting in my drawer and can replace it in five minutes--I didn't need to pay $75 for that. After explaining this, the manager offered to refund my $75. As I was told up front, they kept the $100 nonrefundable diagnostic fee. This isn't a great outcome but I think it's fair--removing one star for the waste of time. read more

I brought in my Macbook Pro for a trackpad replacement . The price was fair. After using the laptop the battery doesnt last more than 30 min now. Battery Cycle was at 0 when I picked it up. Didnt throw a red flag being they had to remove the battery to replace the trackpad. I brought the laptap to Apple and they told me that the battery was in fact changed with the trackpad and they did use an apple battery! Nothing was told to me about changing the battery and they didnt use an apple battery so now Im at apple spending more money to get a new trackpad with a new Apple battery! They offered a deep cleaning service, free of charge IF it doesn't fix the issue, $299 if it does. I had dropped my iPhone 4s back in December, the screen was completely shattered. I had contacted Verizon, where the sales associate literally advised me to just get a new phone for the amount that I'd have to pay to repair it. I contacted Apple who gave me the run around & then instructed me to send my phone in, only to tell me that it'll cost $265 to fix the screen/LCD! I held off taking it to anywhere in the city b/c the reviews were either too good to be true, or the actual "real" ones were saying places were gutting their devices for parts . I came back at about 2:15pm, to which Nick told me "all fixed" & that they were charging it. I turned it on just to make sure & sure enough, the touch screen was fine & working properly. Nick was great to deal with & even emailed a copy of my receipt. Not to mention, the repairs have a 30 day warranty so just in case something goes wrong, you can go right back to them. Came in on 5/19/18 and was quoted 3-5 business days to repair a laptop screen. 5 days go by with no update or notification that the repair would be outside the 5 day window. I contacted them on 5/25 and they told me it was USPS' fault and not theirs that the part had not come in - then Laptop MD decided to actually check what was going on and discovered the part was shipped late by the manufacturer. I spoke to a manager on 5/28 and they still don't have the part and don't know when it will come in. They said I should have been offered expedited shipping - that never happened. They offered me $20 off and said there's nothing else they can do. I cancelled the order. Read through all of the 1 and 2 star reviews about this place and you will see a pattern of lack of communication, bad customer service and shady business practices like inflated prices, shoddy labor, downgrading parts and even charging customers for mistakes that they themselves made. $275 seems to be their baseline quote for many repairs - I have seen that number more than once in previous reviews.
