YELP deleted my review for some reason and i am posting this again just to make sure to warn people about this business. This complaint is against LAPTOPMD, A LAPTOP/COMPUTER REPAIR CENTER LOCATED IN MIDTOWN MANHATTAN. I took my girlfriend's SONY VAIO Z570 LAPTOP, which has original price tag of $1999 from 2009(have receipt for it), for a repair. THE LAPTOP INITIALLY HAD POWER ISSUE. THE LAPTOP WOULD NOT TURN ON, AND IF IT GETS TURNED ON, IT TURNS OFF ITSELF. I repaired broken electronics and sold for cheap so I know how electronics work. It was mostly for hobby and I felt bad for things being trashed which only needed minor part replacement. However, the laptop was out of my reach. I took it apart and was not confident enough to fully take it apart and repair. I knew it was a motherboard issue and maybe need a replacement. I look up online and saw good reviews for LAPTOPMD. I called for an estimate and they told me I would have to take in the laptop for them to put an estimate on. I took it on 1/31/2012(Tuesday) around 4PM and they told me they would have to open it up and see what is inside and call me back in couple of day. No phone calls until Friday. I called them at the end of the day and they said they were in full schedule and not able to fully diagnose the problem. I finally got a call back couple of hours ago saying it might be a keyboard cable that connects to motherboard is shorting (technical term for bad flow of electricity) and need a replacement. The total of $275. According to them, the cable itself was $100, which I think was exaggerated. I know it's an expensive laptop so I gave them a go. Got a call back a week after that saying it is all repaired. So my girlfriend went to pick up and issue wasn't solved. The laptop had the same issue and they told me they need to send it out to a "different location" for better diagnosis since they cannot fix it. Since they didn't call me back in a week, so I called them back and they told me to replace the motherboard and the cost will be whopping $400. I told them NO, put back old stuff and give back the laptop but they insisted to fix it. So they brought down the price to $350. I gave them a go and waited for it. Waited for 2 weeks, no phone call. I called them and the parts didn't arrive. I asked them if it is new parts and the answer was absolutely "yes", even the laptop was 2.5 years old. The same day, they called me to pick up the laptop and the result was the issue was fixed. However, they broke CD/DVD drive, keyboard does not sit properly, broke some piece of plastic on the side, and has a different CPU inside it, one side of the speaker does not work, and fan noise. VERY SLOPPY JOB. I went in the next day and confronted them and they went into a little room to discuss and told me to stay away from the room since I was sitting very close to that room. They were discussing for about three minutes and guy named Matt came to talk to me. He told me that it is a delicate machine and they have NO IDEA WHAT HAPPENED. I asked them questions and their response was I DO NOT KNOW. I asked Matt again if the parts were new. Matt told me it is both new/refurbished. I laughed. Their decision; $50 discount. I asked them to open it up again to see what is wrong and they refused. It is still under 30 day warranty but they refused to even take a look at it. I was very upset and just took $50 and left. New problem: 1. DVD drive does not work. It vibrates hard and scratches CDs. It never happened before the repair. 2. Fan noise is noticeably louder than before. Maybe thermal paste was not applied correctly or loose screw during motherboard installation. 3. HDD light, Wireless light, battery charging light, cap lock light, scroll lock light, number lock light do not work at all. 4. The CPU installed in Z570 model is intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor P9500 prior to the repair. However, it is showing as P8400 after the repair, which OEM price is at least $100 cheaper. 5. I don't usually write reviews; in fact this is the first I've ever written. I just felt the need to get this out there. Any LaptopMD employee, PLEASE READ THIS. On the whole, this place performs as advertised. Professional service, free estimates, you name it. What I want to talk about is one ATROCIOUS employee I just talked to, named CHRIS (at least, that was how he answered the phone). I don't think it's fair to the company to take off more than one star for a single rude employee, but I really hope they at least look into this issue. I dropped off my laptop for repair on Windows 10 on Friday. About two employees in and out of the waiting area. Both in professional LaptopMD attire, polite, just what you'd expect from such a well established place. Guy with the Russian accent, you're awesome. Everything went fine, no problem. I was told to pick up my laptop on Sunday. When I got in on Sunday, there was just a single employee who I couldn't tell even worked there. He had on baggy jeans, a beanie, no LaptopMD attire whatsoever. After a few exchanges with this guy you just know he's not the pleasant type (*I ask a question* "No idea what you're talking about" *awkward silence). Onto more concrete stuff. The engineer I presume did a re-installation of windows 10 on my laptop. First thing I did when I got it back was to ran sfc /scannow, which is fairly standard procedure for checking errors. It failed. CHRIS told me to not worry about it, and that if he ran it on his windows machine it would probably return the same thing. As doubtful as I was I accepted his answer for now, and ran a dism /restorehealth to see if that fixed the problem. When that returned an error as well, and I took it back to CHRIS. I didn't expect him to fix it, but I asked him if he could make a note in my case that this procedural test FAILED right when I got the device back. He reads the error and goes, "What does that even mean?" To which I respond, "I don't know." (I've seen the error before, which is the "source files cannot be found" error, but I don't know exactly what it entails). Now, CHRIS goes, "Now you're just making stuff up. You don't even know what this error means. Have you tried this on any other device that runs Windows 10? No? Then how do you know if this doesn't happen to every single windows device in the universe? You're REALLY starting to push me." He outright refused to add a note that dism fails. Like, what the heck dude? You're the professional here. If I knew exactly what that error meant I would have fixed it myself. Not to mention, I'm pretty sure /scannow and dism commands are very standard procedure in checking for system file errors, and he clearly had no working knowledge of either. Instead, he's insinuating that I'm making errors up and "pushing him." I felt pretty insulted. The only thing that got me out the door was that he promised I had 30 day warranty if anything went wrong, but I've still got a bitter taste in my mouth. Don't get me wrong, this place is great. It's just this one guy CHRIS who comes in on Sundays who is far below what this company normally provides. I still fully recommend anybody with a problem to come in and get it checked out. Just not on Sundays. If any LaptopMD employee reads this, I hope they look into it. Chris, if you're reading this buddy, hope you saw it coming. You better not be the un-fireable boss. read more

I've been meaning to write a review on this place for a while now but never got around to doing it since the laptop I took to them to be fixed is in fact still blue screening. I took my laptop to LaptopMD last summer and told them that my laptop had been blue screening for a while now as well as over heating. I was told that the issue could be my hard drive and that It would have to be replaced. They also offered to back up my data, which I said no to since I did it myself, and upgrade my laptop to windows 7, which I also declined. All in all, to replace the hdd, clean the fan came to 175. I knew it cost way too much but considering I was in a pinch I paid it anyway. Got my laptop home and it still blue screened. I contacted them and was told to bring it in again and then told that the issue was my laptop was slow because of it having windows vista and always running something in the background which caused the blue screen. The new suggested "fix" was to upgrade to windows 7 which would cost me 100 dollars more. Originally the upgrade to windows 7 with my previous fix was only 50 dollars more but now 100 dollars? Still, I said fine, which was a terrible idea. Waited a week and still no word from them on my laptop. Called them and they hadn't started the repair and apparently forgot that they were supposed to do it. Two days later I got an email telling me to come pick up my laptop. Got it home and again and blue screened. Now I am 275 dollars down for what I expressed to them were their trial and error fixes that they had me paying for. They asked me to bring it in a third time so they could try to figure out what was wrong with it. Eventually they contacted me saying their techs couldn't find the problem and asked me to see if I could find out exactly what triggered the blue screens and bring it back to them. When I got it home and started it up it started up as if I had just hard booted it which I found odd. Eventually, I remembered that before taking it to them I turned it off from the power button because it was on the blue screen window again. How can they see what the problem is if they didn't turn it on to test it is what I'm dying to know. Sometime later I contacted them telling them I still wasn't sure of the trigger and If I could bring it in anyway and I never got a response from them. So now I still have a laptop that blue screens and no refund. I guess despite their name being laptopmd they only know how to fix cracked phone screens. By the way, I wouldn't trust these "reviews" since they ask customers to write a review for them for a discount before they get home to see if their device truly does work. read more

A couple of weeks ago, my 13 year old's reasonably new HP laptop developed a crack inside the top left of the monitor when he took it on a weekend trip to a friend's house. We spoke to HP, and they said it would cost $270 to repair (they said this issue was not covered by the warranty), and they told us to go back to BestBuy to get the work done. BestBuy said it would take about four weeks to get the part and do the replacement. My son was less than eager to wait four weeks. We took the laptop home and began searching online for an alternative. We found LaptopMD in midtown Manhattan. The speed of service they mentioned on their site, combined with the reviews I read, looked too good to be true, however I thought I'd give them a call. I spoke to them right away, and after double-checking our laptop's model number against their inventory, told me they could fix it immediately. They happen to be down the street from my office, so I took it in at 10am the next day. They estimated a cost of $250 to replace the monitor (which is roughly the same as I would have paid to BestBuy with a four week wait!), and told me it would be ready by 2pm. I got an e-mail around 12pm telling me the work was already done. I picked it up in the early evening, and after checking it over, took it home to my son. After using it for a few minutes, my son told me he noticed a tiny surface crack in the screen -- something I hadn't noticed when I checked it before leaving LaptopMD. I took it back the next day, and they immediately told me it was no problem, and they would take care of it right away. I got an e-mail a couple of hours later telling me the repair had been completed, and when I went to pick it up later in the day, it was perfect. I, of course, was not charged another penny. I took it home to my son, and this time it passed his thorough inspection and it's as good as new. I would use LaptopMD again without reservation, and I would recommend them to all my friends and associates. They fixed our problem in a couple of hours for the same price we would have paid to BestBuy to fix the same problem in four weeks! read more

I've used Laptop MD twice recently and both experiences were great. First, I took my iPhone and iPad in because I had started a new job and I needed to install the company's calendar and my company email on both devices. Their tech department was in Australia and their tech guy had just sent me a bunch of wireless settings and VPN's that made absolutely no sense to me. To top it off, no one on staff here in NYC knew how to install these things either! So by the time I got here I was beyond frustrated. Then I met Anthony. He was super patient & he installed everything on my phone; he even texted the tech guy in Australia just to make sure I had everything exactly right:) Then he synced both devices - I was there for several hours and he charged me $100. He literally saved my job! Next then I know, my trusty Sony VAIO stops working. So of course, I take it to Anthony to be repaired. But-the patient is in bad shape & days later Anthony calls me to say VAIO didn't make it. It was a crushing blow, but Anthony came to the rescue again. He talked me through my options for replacing VAIO and seemed to have all the time in the world to answer my questions - and there were many! This was a big decision for me; I'm so not a techie-I just plug my devices in or turn them on & I expect them to work. When they don't, I am in total crisis mode. I purchased a new MacBook Pro and took it back to Anthony for data transfer and set up. Anthony and the team at Laptop MD made the whole process so easy. I've always been a PC girl so once again Anthony patiently explained the differences & gave me a basic tutorial plus an introduction to Pages and Numbers (Apple's version of Word & Excel). These guys turned a horrible situation into a good experience-what more could a customer want?? Great prices, friendly and helpful staff plus exemplary customer service!! I will never, ever enter the Apple Store and suffer through an appointment at the Genuis Bar again. Take my advice people-avoid the seventh ring of hell that is more commonly referred to as The Genius Bar and just come to Laptop MD instead. You'll be so glad you did!!! Elizabeth read more

(I wrote this on Citysearch in 12/07) They're like an old-fashioned family doctor's office! I just discovered LaptopMD on New York Citysearch about two months ago. Since then, they've achieved my loyalty by: 1) fixing my younger daughter's laptop, when the screen wouldn't work, within a day or two, at a very fair price; 2) replacing a faulty power adapter; 3) evaluating a laptop that I was going to send to a needy community in India, giving me a reasonable free estimate on what it would cost to replace a faulty motherboard, and being very pleasant when I decided not to repair it; 4) install memory chips (purchased elsewhere) in a laptop I am sending to Ghana - at no charge; 5) when I picked up the two laptops for India and Ghana after the free evaluation, one of their technicians was in the elevator with me, saw I was having a hard time carrying the two laptops at once, and walked me to Eighth Avenue and was willing to stay with me until I got a cab! 6) Answering the phone at 9:30 last night when my older daughter's laptop hard drive crashed in Boston, when she desperately needed her files to complete rabbinical school exams and papers; 7) Answering again at 8:50 a.m. this morning and reassuring me when I called to say that we were sending my daughter's laptop to them by Greyhound Package Express, and working with us to arrange a messenger to pick it up at the Greyhound office; 8)Laptop MD is evaluating it for free, and then will try hard to recover the files today and email them to my daughter. They expect to charge a few hundred dollars (plus $50 extra for emergency service) if their evaluation says they can recover the files. I'm completely confident that the technicians at LaptopMD know what they are doing. [P.S. 8/10: LaptopMD got my daughter's files back to her the same day, at a fraction of the price that others quoted me.] I've only known them for two months, but I'm already a very loyal customer. I came in with a particularly boutique make of laptop (a Clevo WS230), with a cracked screen and broken hinges. I left it in for a few days to get an estimate. I told them about my problems; when I came back to reclaim my prize, they told me nothing that I didn't already know. In fact, they went so far as to spin tales of a faulty motherboard, and an inability to get output via HDMI.. Except after I got my machine back and tried to conduct my own repairs, I discovered that they lied to me. My motherboard was fine; my laptop boots up fine. The estimate started at about $500, then went up when my motherboard "failed". How did they know? They tried to plug in my laptop via HDMI. I held onto my SSDs (I don't trust anyone with them), so they didn't have an OS to work with. I'd assumed that they would be wise enough to try booting a Linux distribution from a flash drive, or perhaps even to use a motherboard tester. Nope. And the hinges? Sorry, they can only be found in Europe. We'll get 'em and install them for you, but they'll take a month and will not be cheap. Except a few days later I found the exact hinges I needed from a store based in Delaware. The name of the tech who was assigned to my laptop and who told me this information was Pasha Andrukhov. I'm sure he's a nice man and is pleasant to hang out with off the clock, but I wouldn't trust him with so much as a bag of Legos. Do not recommend. You will be ripped off. These people are incompetent at best, deceitful at worst. Do NOT lett their pretty office, trendy waiting room, and free Wi-fi lull you into a false sense of security. Stay away. read more

I have had several friends recommend this company and on their experience I thought I would try them, My experience was Great. I brought in my daughters Toshiba 9000 tecra and it was old but she cherished it. It just stopped working. The guys there worked on it for several days to rebuild and restore it while saving the documents and folders. It didn't look good and they didn't want me to throw away my money, It was ten years old. So they offered me an alternative that I couldn't resist. Ivan gave me a choice of several computers they had in the shop and offered to rebuild one (I chose an IBM Thinkpad looks new) They installed a new larger hardrive, 4 times the memory and several bells and whistles my daughter didn't have before on the toshiba at no extra cost because of the delay in trying to revive the old one. Plus they put all the folders from the old computer in the new one. Never lost a picture or an Itune download. These Guys are Awesome. They where so concerned on doing the right thing I felt guilty. My daughter Loves the Laptop and is amazed at it's performance. All for $ 250.00, because of the delay, If That's Not The Ultimate Customer Service What Is? I visited them three times and each time they had people coming in for repairs and service and not once did I see a dissatisfied customer, What I did see was a grateful clientele knowing they are coming to the right place to get the right job done by the Best. First of all, I'm very cynical about most commercial enterprises, especially when it comes to buying/servicing products I have limited knowledge about. It's buyer beware. Therefore, when my aged Toshiba laptop slowed to a crawl and started shutting itself off & turning back on, I tried to fix the problem myself, running additional virus programs, cleaning out old files, etc. Nothing helped. A friend recommended Laptop MD's free diagnostic. He'd had a very good experience with the place. I went to Laptop MD's office, which was attractive and inviting, and gave my computer to Nick, the customer service manager. After I told him all the problems with my laptop and everything I'd done to try to correct them, he said they would check it thoroughly, and before they did anything, let me know how much a repair would cost. He also said the price might be such that I'd be better off buying a new computer. (They don't sell computers.) I spoke to Nick the next day & he told me the hard drive was kaput. He also told me the price they would charge to install another hard drive and said I'd probably do better to put the money toward buying a new computer. He also answered several other computer questions, even though I was no longer a potential customer. All in all, I was very impressed by Nick's professionalism and by the fact that Laptop MD helped me without making any money from me. I definitely recommend the company to others. read more

Avoid this place! I've always had a fear of repair shops and this place was no different. I decided to come here because of the great reviews and awards. When I was on the line to drop off my laptop, I noticed another customer wanting to fix his hard drive and was quoted at $300. I immediately thought this was strange (completely charged too much). I dropped off the laptop and told them what I assumed was the issue. The next day I receive a phone call and was told the price would be $300, plus a down payment for the part, plus a new windows installation, plus any other fees... I said no and when I went to pick it up, I heard them also quoting $300 for another customer repair. I picked up my laptop and came home and started looking through reviews and found that most customers, despite the issue, are quoted at $300 or more! I took it to another repair shop and was told it would cost $75 to repair. No other fees, no other installation required, nothing! LaptopMD even said the only part they could find to replace the damaged piece was in Taiwan but I actually found a place online that sold it for $20 out from California! This place is a complete rip-off and apparently start their quotes at $300 or more for laptop repairs. It's a shame that such a place is one of the top picks on Yelp when there are better places to go to. Please stay away from here! read more

Took my water damaged 2014 Macbook pro (minor water damage--computer still worked in safe mode) there after the Apple store said it would cost $1240+ tax to replace the logic board. I tried showing the tech pictures of the damage (Apple had taken them while diagnosing the problem), but they didn't want to see. Was told that the keyboard/logic board were one piece, and that they could both be replaced for $600. After 3 weeks of waiting, I called to find out the status of my repair. They said that they didn't need to replace the keyboard (which was never broken to begin with), and that it would now only be $400 to fix the logic board. After a few more days, I called again to get an update. This time they said that they cleaned the logic board "multiple times", but that it still wouldn't work. They said it needed a new logic board which would be over $1000 for the part alone (which is what I originally was told could be replaced with labor for $600). I told them I didn't want them to replace it, and picked up my (still broken) laptop. Brought it home and took it apart, and the logic board hadn't been touched--still had the same dust and corrosion on the board which was there in the pictures from the Apple store. Only reason for 2 stars is that they seemed nice and didn't try to charge me for the failed repair. read more

I was in NYC on vacation and the hard drive on my laptop malfunctioned. I did not have a bootable flash drive handy, so I asked them to check/fix the hard drive, and to start by using chkdsk. They said they would let me know in 2 hours. 7 hours later, I called them, and they acted like they completely forgot about it, then took 1 minute to look at it and said "yeah, the hard drive is dead. We can put a new one in, and put an OS on it for $300." I declined and bought another laptop to get me through the trip. As soon as I got home, I got my bootable flash drive, ran chkdsk and it was fixed in 10 minutes. Likely, they didn't even look at it. They, instead, opted to try to lie to me for the $300. I'm sure this actually works in most cases with tourists, so its a common practice. Unfortunately, this is completely unethical and opportunistic. The reviews look as though they are good at fixing iphone screens, but as people, they are definitely not professionals and are not looking to actually make money fixing computers, unless they can gouge you for the high-return services. All you can do about it is leave reviews in all the important places and have a nice, SEO-friendly review site built. All I can do now is help the next guy before he spends his money here!
