I had a great experience here as a new patient of Dr Gina Day and her team member Adriana. I called on Tuesday and Adriana answered right away and offered me same week appointment options. The whole team was friendly and efficient, and they had many frames options from my favorite company Prodesign Denmark. I had a lot of fun talking to both Dr Day and Adriana, and Adriana was particularly helpful in helping pick out a Prodesign frame that worked with my prescription.

I appreciate the covid safety options for those of us who are chronically ill.

Stephanie was very helpful. In 2021, the glasses I got here never did work for me. This time, because I'm non adaptive to bifocals and have Partnership as my vision plan, I was approved for two pair. It is my hope that this time the glasses will be perfect. I had to pay extra for blue block and anti glare out of pocket and will update my review when the glasses arrive. On a side note for covid conscious people, they still offer an outdoor waiting area, hand sanitizer and masks are optional, ALL staff opted out of wearing masks today, but I wore mine.

    Great place, friendly staff.

The initial eye exam felt like an assembly line where I was passed from one person to the next, then ended with a salesman-type (they called him a counselor) who was basically a closer. I felt like I was buying a car! That said, everyone was very pleasant and they worked around my schedule to get my surgery done before I left the country. The surgery itself was super fast and painless (albeit a bit unnerving psychologically, but that part only lasted a few seconds). I got the SMILE surgery, a slightly less invasive technique than Lasik. There was a tiny bit of irritation after the numbness wore off, but the next morning I was fine, and within a few days my vision was quite clear. I only got one eye done, so one eye is near sighted and the other is now far sighted, and my brain stitches the images together so I feel like I have 20/20 vision. It's incredible! I need prescription readers now, though, so I can do my up-close stuff without my new far-sighted eye feeling wonky. It was expensive but overall I'm happy with the results. Would recommend. Bonus: As the surgeon got ready to perform the minute-long operation, he put on an 80s station and Sade's song Smooth Operator came on. I asked if he puts this song on each time he operates, but he said it was a coincidence.

The entire process felt smooth, professional, and reassuring. I especially want to highlight, Marleny Garcia at the San Ramon office, who was absolutely incredible. She took the time to thoroughly explain all of my options and walk me through the entire surgical process, which immediately put me at ease. I left our conversation feeling relieved, confident, and genuinely excited about the procedure. What really stood out was how personable and honest Marleny was. She shared her own vision journey and personal experience with eye surgeries, which made a huge difference for me. Hearing her story made it easy to trust her, and it was very clear that she truly cares about the patients who walk through the door. I had originally planned to consult with other doctors' offices before making a decision, but after meeting with Marleny, I felt completely confident that I had found the right place for my laser eye surgery. She played a major role in helping me feel comfortable moving forward. Thank you so much, Marleny, and thank you to the entire Scott Hyver Visioncare team for such an excellent experience!

They clearly forgot about me until I complained - blamed it on "a new system." Miraculously, they called my name two minutes later. Came in for a persistent red eye - over a month. Dr. said she could give me a steroid but wanted me to take artificial tears for a month to see if it cleared up. It did not. So now I'm here again. The receptionist asked for my insurance. Told her she should have it on file from just a month ago. She said they implemented a "new system" and it didn't carry over. Hmmm, that sounds familiar. I pulled out my phone to show her my digital insurance card. She says that won't work with the "new system" and only hard copies will work. Huh? However, she was somehow able to check me in and take my co-pay. After those hoops, I've now been sitting in exam room for an hour when someone finally came in & said your Dr. is in a surgery that's taking longer than expected. Another Dr. will see you When, I asked? I'm not sure, he said. How much longer will I need to wait? I just need a Rx for steroid drops to clear up my red eye. I'm not sure, he said. Still waiting... Needless to say, I will be on the hunt for a new ophthalmologist if I need to see one again.

Shoutouts FYidoctors in San Rafael Whatever anyone thinks,…read morethis place will forever be my haven. I wasn't supposed to be here. I wasn't their patient. I didn't have an appointment. I hadn't purchased my glasses here. Until that day, I had never walked through their doors, let alone knew who they were. I was just someone driving to a wedding in an unfamiliar area when, without warning, the lens fell completely out of my prescription glasses. I've worn glasses virtually my entire life and never experienced anything like it. One second I'm dressed up, driving to a wedding and going about my day. The next I'm frantically looking for the nearest exit and closest shop that can urgently repair my glasses. You can 'see' how difficult and stressful this situation was, with a sprinkle of already being late to the ceremony.... It sounds almost funny afterward. In the moment, it wasn't. I put 20 minutes onto a parking meter and dashed off blindly for this store. Mind you, it was minutes before closing. I walked in, explained what had happened and prepared myself for all the perfectly reasonable questions: Are you a patient here? Did you buy these from us? Insurance? ID? Do you have an appointment? Instead, they just helped me. They took my glasses, put the lens back in and secured everything. Without me even asking, they inspected everything, checked the opposite side and tightened that screw too so I hopefully wouldn't find myself in the same predicament again. I offered to pay them. They wouldn't take a dime. I was in awe. I hadn't even expected them to take me, let alone be this attentive and caring. I wasn't looking for a freebie. At that moment, I didn't care what it cost. I was dressed for a wedding, away from home, and my glasses had catastrophically failed while I was driving. By the time I walked back around the corner to my car, I still had 9 minutes on the meter. But maybe the reason such a small interaction affected me so much is because of the contrast. This wasn't the first time these glasses had fallen apart. The 1st time this happened, I went back to the practice that actually sold them to me. I was their established patient, wearing glasses purchased from their office, and they still wouldn't let me do a walk-in. I had to go through the normal scheduling process to find an appointment time for a repair. Ridiculous. I remember joking with the opticians there, "Oh thank goodness it happened while I was safely at home. Imagine if my glasses suddenly fell apart while I was somewhere unfamiliar and actually needed them." Then they did. While I was driving, no less. I was nobody to these people. My own provider had every reason to consider these glasses, and me, their responsibility. This office had none. I cannot overstate how much that contrast floored me. A practice I had never given a dollar to treated my eyewear problem with a level of urgency, kindness and basic humanity that I hadn't experienced from the practice where I actually bought the glasses. That's why I'm writing so much about what was probably an incredibly ordinary few minutes in their workday. To them, maybe it was just tightening a screw and putting a lens back. To me, it was somebody coming through for me during a genuinely lousy moment when they had absolutely no obligation to. The ratings here are remarkably high. I've also seen the recent criticism from longtime patients who feel things have changed since the business changed hands. I'm not here to tell those people they're wrong. Their experiences are theirs. I'm here to add mine. And mine is admittedly unusual. I haven't had an eye exam here. I haven't ordered glasses here. I can't promise anybody what their experience with those services will be. But I can tell you something most reviews probably can't: I know how these people treated someone when they weren't their customer. If you're reading reviews trying to decide whether to give this practice a chance, that's the perspective I can offer you. Based on my experience alone, I'd feel comfortable giving them the opportunity to earn my business when I actually needed an optometrist. Maybe that's an unusually strong opinion to form from such a short interaction. But sometimes eleven minutes tells you a lot about a business. At least compared to the practice that sold me these glasses... I certainly found my haven.

Dr. Shin's negative…read morereviews all had to do with personality; unlike the other surgeons reviewed, no one complained about his outcomes. That seemed worth following up. I found Dr. Shin matter-of-fact and knowledgeable. He knows what he's doing and is ready to get on with it. During the process of preparing for and following up on two cataract surgeries, I had lots of questions, and always got the support I needed from his staff, and when necessary from him. He knew I was nervous about the surgery and took the time to allay my concerns, including scheduling an extra visit. I was a little concerned at first about having state-of-the-art surgery in a charming 100 year old building, but in retrospect it was a much more comfortable experience than a hospital setting, and probably more sanitary. Having to fast the day of the surgery, I wasn't thrilled to have my two procedures scheduled for mid-day. It made more sense when his scheduler told me that Dr. Shin does the patients first who are least able to tolerate fasting. This is someone who worries about his patients. My wife's cataract surgeon had her come in for follow-ups the day after surgery, the next week, the next month, and so on. Dr. Shin saw me the day after, and then said to see my regular opthamologist in a few months. Some might find that off-putting. I was reassured by his attitude that this is routine stuff. OK, you know what to expect. Dr. Shin might not suit everyone, but if you want your cataracts fixed skillfully and efficiently, he's the guy.

At the first visit he…read morewas confident and clear: it was pressing on my eye, and I should try compresses and ointment, then schedule an excision if that didn't work. I followed his instructions exactly. It went downhill from there. I was called in on a day he doesn't do procedures, told there was only a 50/50 chance he'd actually do it, and nearly charged for an unnecessary second consult. Staff falsely claimed I'd reported pain. When I finally saw him, he contradicted his own diagnosis, said my blurry vision was just my glasses, hadn't reviewed his notes, and seemed reluctant to do the procedure he'd told me to schedule. In fact, he said I think this is scar tissue at this point. If I do this, you might just have more scar tissue. This completely contradicted what he told me on the first exam. The excision itself was worse: not enough numbing, nothing to brace my head against as the blade came toward my open eye until I asked, and a wobbly headrest. I could feel the cutting, and when I said so, he dismissed it. In fact, when the Q-tip he was using to clean it afterwards hurt like hell he said oh it's only a Q-tip. And I said well I don't care what it is. It hurts. I was on the verge of a panic attack. I had to sit with my eyelid in a clamp, flipped open and had to watch a sharp blade repeatedly come towards my eye. You really gotta be numb for that! The procedure worked, but only because I pushed for it and survived it. My adrenal system is wrecked.
