I wanted to update this review to increase the rating for Larry's as new information came to light this year. Evidently, there is something that affects the mk5 Jetta sedan and Jetta sportwagons (2005-2011) where, for some reason, no repairs to the door locks will fix the locking mechanism. As a bonus, it comes along with an undetectable parasitic drain on the battery if not driven every day (for instance during a global pandemic vs driving 1hr to and from work every day.) Having 3 other trustworthy, smart mechanics try to figure out my old car impressed on me that Larry did his best and the timing of the car's inherent flaw was purely coincidental. If anyone else has a similar year VW with these issues happening, I urge you to save your money trying to diagnose and repair, and put it towards a new vehicle. I heard of Larry from my relatives who live near to his shop. They spoke of him with a sort of reverence that I rarely hear used for a mechanic (I also trust my relatives implicitly). So, our car developed a strange whistle, or whining sound, as we were driving down to Asheville. A simple online search seemed to indicate that it may be a breather-box problem. So, I went in to see Larry with these issues. He quickly asked me a series of questions that helped clarify what might have gone wrong. He also asked me what kind of oil should I put in the car. I told him that my regular mechanic had advised me to use regular oil in the vehicle, to save some money. He then told me why that was a very very bad idea. I listened to his explanation, and it made complete sense. I could tell he was not trying to talk me into an oil change, or swindle me in anyway shape or form. He recommended that we do a detergent in the oil to clean out the gummed up mess that is the inside of my engine. Apparently, the crankcase had a positive pressure value instead of a vacuum - which is a very very bad thing. I had noticed on the trip that the car was struggling. He also mentioned that the turbo might be a bit tired. That did not surprise me. All in all, he did a detergent cleaning of the engine where he took apart various pieces to clean them out. He had to fabricate some new parts (instead of being overcharged by the "stealership"), and advised me to drive home with the conventional oil, and THEB use a specific detergent to clean the car after the trip. Then change the oil once we are at home, back to synthetic- and watch how the car reacts. I found this to be very logical. He's been there for around 40 years, I hope that he sticks around for our next trip down, but if it's time to retire- I respect that. I found him to be a very pleasant, warm, honest man. I went in today without an appointment as I was concerned that my oil gauge was showing no oil. I was treated most courteously by Josh who immediately went to look at my car. Although, they were technically not repairing cars today, Larry, the owner, told Josh it was ok to work on my car while I waited. While going through unfiled documents this morning I came across the bill from my visit to Larry's on 08/30/2018 for my recently purchased 2008 Volvo V70. I was having a check engine light issue that the code reader at Autozone was unable to pinpoint. The basic issue was one of the camshaft sensors, exhaust of intake, was malfunctioning. Not wanting to bring the vehicle in to a Volvo dealership I looked up Larry's in Asheville, made an appointment for a Volvo code read and drove up from Hendersonville. Larry was out of the shop at the time of the appointment and I was greeted by an employee named Josh who was condescending and unpleasant from the start. Before he connected the vehicle to the code reader he actually questioned my judgement in purchasing the vehicle in Atlanta GA without having his "expert" advice and input. The result of his code read was the same as autozone P0075 INTAKE CAM VVT sensor code. Funny because I had already replaced the sensors. Before reattaching the the engine cover he did mention that the code read might note be accurate and the issue could be one of two exhaust sensors. When I asked him to pinpoint those two sensors he was unable to do so but "thought" it might be this one or that one". I paid the bill, left the shop, returned home and ordered an OEM exhaust sensor, located it visually and later installed it myself. Has worked perfectly since. I will never return and do not recommend this shop for Volvo under any circumstance. read more

In my 40 years in the automotive business I never encountered a finer Volvo, VW, and Porsche expert! Larry has invested tens of thousands of dollars in the most modern and up-to-date diagnostic equipment and software, and can diagnose and repair any drivability problem! I took my VW to be diagnosed by Larry. The check engine light kept coming on and My brakes seemed to be acting funny also. Larry checked it out in a few hours called to tell me the catalytic converter needed replacing plus a bolt for the front suspension. I picked the car up because I could not leave it to be repaired. Larry was really worried about the doors squeaking. I took the car to a vw mechanic and the catalytic converter was not broken and I needed c v joint replacements.
