Responding to Peter, i left out no details. You stated you stand by your work, yet you refused to work with me and would not communicate and that's not a person who cares. Had you simply given me the courtesy of discussing this, i probably wouldn't be here posting. So, how about I stood by you when Dan retired? I came to you to (hopefully) be a life-time customer. You complained about wishing more of Dan's customers had stayed with Larson's when you took over. I don't see you as loyal, yet you expect loyalty. You "dismissed" many long-time customers who apparently had older Volvos. Not even a group email letting them know ahead of time and a simple "thank you" for bringing your car to Larson's. I am old fashioned and that kind of respect goes a long way towards future good will. I am not "bashing" but giving my experience. Call it what you want, you had every opportunity to work with me. I would rather have not had to spend my precious time dealing with you on this level. It is unpleasant.. You couldn't be bothered and you ignored my emails and calls. And, no, the issue i paid you for was never resolved by You. You drove the car with me (in rush hour traffic) when i left your shop and it was still "choking." We have a '92 Volvo that started making an intermittent noise. Peter took one quick look at the car and pretty easily diagnosed the problem. I had just found out from my regular mechanic that my '07 XC90 needed a new transmission, so I was in the market for a new Volvo instead of sinking more $ into it. I took the new one I was test driving by Larson's to see if he could check out for me and he asked what was wrong with my old one....long story short Peter looked at my Volvo, and I did NOT need a new transmission. He saved me from buying a new car. I have since taken my Volvo XC90 to him for all repairs. The last time I took it for a tune up, he had a shop car that he let me use for the day! I've taken my V50 to Larsons for a few years now and have always had a great experience. * Problems and solutions are always extremely well explained and Peter takes as long as you need answering questions * I had a hard to diagnose fault with the cooling fan system that took determination to finally reproduce and figure out that was why the battery was draining * Parts are always left for you to inspect and he shows you what went wrong (and there's no bs as the evidence is there) Most recently I had a banging noise from underneath the car. I brought it in right at the end of the day, he immediately saw what it was (MY FAULT when I replaced some suspension components and not torqued the bolt to spec.), fixed it in 5 minutes and then didn't even charge me. As life gets busier I do less of my own work on my cars, but I'm enough of a mechanic to know when things are right, and when things are sketch. Never sketch here in my experience. read more

Called and left a message about needing help with my windshield wiper (the passenger side stopped working after one of our snow storms). I honestly didn't think I would get a call back, but I did! Previously had this into my preferred dealership 3 times and they couldn't fix it. An independent shop replaced the battery and said it ran OK. ( it ran horribly within 24 hours). I echo the previous reviewers. I chose to use Dan because of these reviews, and I wasn't dissapointed. When I pulled up to his shop I knew I'd come to the right place. A messy garage with Volvos packed in. I brought him the mechanics worst nightmare... the intermittent problem. He had the problem diagnosed and repaired in a couple of days. I had him do some other work as well, and was very pleased with his ability to explain what would be done and how much it would cost. He is a man of his word and an extremely competent mechanic. His prices are more than fair and as many of us know, finding a mechanic you can trust is priceless. read more

I can't say enough good things about Larsens's Volvo repair on Roosevelt. I got an honest first hand estimate by the same guy who's working on my Volvo and no middle man to jack up the price. I have happily switched my Volvo car maintenance to Larsens's Volvo on Roosevelt from my previous mechanic of 25 years that was just down the street a ways. Larsens's offered to FIX the problem I was having for less than the estimate of the other place just looking at it. So right off I saved a bunch of money and the service was top notch and exactly as promised. It's great to have a trusted mechanic! Dan is an excellent guy and an excellent mechanic. After recently buying a volvo and calling Dan to take a check engine light he was able to quickly diagnose the problem. Dan offered me a great price on fixing problems with my cooling system and changing the timing belt the next week. Dan helped we weigh the costs of some repairs for the piece of mind and really took the time to explain my options. His work was great and the time he took to follow up to make sure everything was going well was even better. Another five star review for Dan. Long story semi-short, my '89 740 broke down in Ballard last week. I was prepared to have it towed into his shop, but thought I'd call ahead as a first time customer to make sure he would have time to deal with it. I got his voice mail and left a message. I called again a half hour or so later and got Dan. This was a Friday. I hadn't realized that they were closed, but had gotten Dan as he was checking his voice mail. He let me know that they weren't open, but hey, since I was broken down in Ballard, and he lived nearby.... An hour later, Dan met me at my car and had it running within 5 minutes. I had a dead fuel pump, but Dan showed me how to get things running if I couldn't afford the repair yet, and was happy to let me be on my way free of charge. Again. I had found a mechanic that was willing to come help me get my car started. On his day off. For free. Needless to say, he got my business, and will continue to get my business as long as I have my current car or any other Volvo that I might buy. Oh. To top it off, the fuel pump replacement ended up running nearly $100 less than he had quoted me while originally getting the car started. I had other work done as well, and at the risk of offending other mechanics, this was the first time I've had work done on a car without any nagging feeling that I was being taken advantage of for not knowing enough about cars. read more

Peter (and Dave) of Larson's Volvo are simply the best, in every sense of the word. I found them online, through Yelp actually, when I was searching for a new garage to service my 2004 Volvo XC70. After a couple years of being unsatisfied with the local big box Volvo guys, I decided I needed to change up my mechanic, and I now have a relationship for life. From the first time I took my Volvo into Larson's, I have been at total ease. Peter's disarming and honest approach was so earnest and refreshing, I couldn't help but feel my car was in the right hands. He did a full inspection just to figure out what (if anything) needed to be done, and then gave me a thorough and honest breakdown of the car's status. Instead of pushing me to get any and everything done that wasn't 100%, he gave me a prioritized list to help me understand what was really important and why. He has always acted as if it were his own car - and this is key - instead of just doing things to make more money. He provides an honest breakdown of what is going on, how much things will cost, and an honest assessment of whether it's worth it or not, and often it's not. And then 2 years down the road, when that deferred maintenance becomes a bigger issue, you not only know it's coming but have complete trust and faith that Peter and Dave are doing everything right. Over 3 years or so, there have been numerous occasions where Peter has gone out of his way to help me save costs - whether it's him scrounging his contacts to find used replacement parts when appropriate, or giving my wife and me the assurance we need that doing something in 6 or 12 months down the line won't be a problem. I simply cannot stress enough how happy I am to have found Larson's, and I will continue to go out of my way to recommend them to friends. My car is likely nearing the end of its life, and I remarked to Peter how I may have to buy another Volvo just so I can keep him as my mechanic, but he assured me they can do basically any car! I tried this place last week based solely on the 5-star Yelp rating, but am really confused why they have that after my experience this week. First, I followed gps to the address (coming from Seattle) and when it said I was there, I was like "where??" Not a sign in sight... I cruised around the block and it sent me on Roosevelt where I saw the block where the shop was supposed to be, but saw signs for two other businesses. After calling and being told to find street parking, I noticed an old sign in the window that doesn't even match the Yelp business name, but close. I had an airbag warning light to get checked out. Was happy there was a loaner car to use for the day...until I got in the car. I kid you not, Peter introduced me to the 2000 Volvo wagon loaner by telling me four problems with it, and after each said, "I haven't had time to fix it." That left me with a bad taste...being sent off in a vehicle that he hadn't taken the time to make sure is in good condition and completely safe for the customers. It drive like crap and then realized even the AC was broken, which he failed to mention. Warm day in Seattle, so this was irritating. I could've used public transportation had I known the condition of the loaner. When I get the call with estimates, Peter explains the airbag problems along with a recommendation to fix the power steering pump. Total cost was around $3k. I already had an estimate from another shop on the power steering pump, which was lower than what Peter quoted. As a result I wanted to compare his airbag quote with that same shop. I'm not abt to authorize $3k in repairs without confidence it's needed or the best deal. He got irritated when I asked him for specifics on his quote, including part #'s. He said, "we don't really do that" but reluctantly read some over he phone when I asked again. Every other shop I've been to had printed out detailed estimates for me in any work they recommend. It includes part #'s, cost and labor. But Peter "doesn't do that." I opted to not have any repairs done and planned to just pick up my car. I stopped at gas station to refill the 30 miles with I had used, but the trick be explained (prying open the gas door with my key) didn't work. After multiple tries I gave up and let him know I tried to add gas. I immediately offered up that he just add $5 on to the bill instead. He looked shocked I couldn't maneuver the gas thing and then was ready to dispute the $5 (too low) when I said, "the AC doesn't even work, the car is a piece of crap." He got offended and said "most people are just happy to have SOMETHING." I would have preferred a public bus. He pretty much tossed my credit card back towards me on the counter after he ran it. Totally not impressed and have mad much better experiences at multiple other shops. If you're in auto repair, you can't be offended when someone wants a second opinion. Dan was my mechanic from the day he opened up his shop. He's honest, does good work that he stands behind, and has reasonable prices. He'll talk to you about your car problems, explain things clearly, help you prioritize work if you don't want to do things all at once. Absolutely no gender bias: he treats his female customers who know nothing about cars with the same care and respect that he gives anyone else, and he tolerates people like me who are in love with their cars and want to talk about them incessently with good grace. I've moved, and I miss Dan more than anyone else in Seattle. I've used other places, before Dan opened his shop and during a hiatus that he took, and I never found Dan's equal for quality, price and genuine care. Your Volvo will be happy with Dan. read more

Let me just preface this review with a little bit of information: I've never been in this shop (I was on my way to do so) and I've never even met the man face-to-face, but he has already secured any Volvo repair work that I may need to have done in the future. I called Larson's to schedule an appointment for my sick Volvo. Dan Larson is that extremely rare commodity in car repair - honest, straight-talking and unusually generous with his time. I read the other review of him after prior screwjobs from Seattle mechanics. I called to sheepishly askl about a bundle of quirky issues on our Volvo. He gave me a general reaction (he typically doesn't work on our model - a '93 960). But told me to stop by. Which was the smartest thing I've done with this car in years. He replaced a blown fuse, checked through a wide array of things and then - here's the kicker - didn't charge me a thing. Dan's the best. Plus his co-mechanic/apprentice is his daughter. If you have a Volvo and live in Seattle, you can do absolutely no better than Dan Larson. read more

After getting a couple of estimates at the usual old volvo places, Dan, not only had the fairest price, but was also kind, and explained everything in detail. One shop mentioned an expensive job that would have to be done fairly soon, and Dan said, no, that's not true, it can wait. He's always made time to answer all my questions, and is patient, and never condescending, like some others. When having problems with my wipers on a rainy day, he met me in Ballard, on a SUNDAY! Dan is the best! Well, let me qualify. He's the best Rear-Wheel-Drive Volvo guy I've found in Seattle, and as good as the the best I've known. I recently had the opportunity to get to know him as a result of bringing my daughter's 240 to him after driving it from Florida, and following a negative experience with another noted 'Swedish' shop in the Seattle area. I have owned and/or maintained twenty Volvo's since college, and know these cars fairly well. Though we've had my daughter's car in the family for a few years, it was only driven during her breaks from school. A new job in Seattle finally required that she have regular 'wheels', so my son and I decided it would be a worthwhile adventure to drive the car diagonally across the United States. Before leaving, we replaced a lot of 'consumable' parts (brakes, hoses, belts, fluids) to get the car in shape. Perhaps inevitably, we developed a transmission fluid leak during the trip, and based on my experience, plus consulting some trusted Volvo guys back home, I determined the likely source as a rear transmission bushing and seal. We managed to complete the trip by keeping the fluid topped-up. Since i wanted the problem repaired right away, and I was going to be in Seattle only few days, I accepted a recommendation from an acquaintance to take the car to another shop because they promised they could do the work before I left town. I asked them to plan to replace the worn parts, and authorized an oil change since it was due. Total time for the work should have been under three hours, After having the car for two days, I received a call informing me that they could NOT schedule the work before I left, and that I should leave the car for my daughter to pick up the following week (not to mention her need to use the car for her internship job while they had it). Not willing to submit my daughter to the mercies of an unknown repair facility (she is not in the least car-savvy), When I went in to collect the car and settle my bill, I was charged $146...for an oil change...the only additional work they performed was a 'diagnostic review', which entailed them looking for a wide variety of other work they could charge us for. Charges also included a fee for cleaning the underside of the transmission to verify the condition I informed them of in the first place. Needless to say, we escaped as quickly as possible. I'm sure that shop does top-notch work, but...well, you know how it is to feel taken advantage-of. I sought advice for another Volvo repair shop, and was led to Dan Larson, who specializes in older (rear-drive) Volvo's like my daughter's. I was told to expect straight talk, and that's just what I got when we met. He quickly verified the original diagnosis which I had guessed-at, told me the range of problems he might encounter, what the costs might be, and made an appointment for a couple days later. There were several statements Dan made about daughter's car which are well-known among Volvo addicts concerning her model, and which proved beyond doubt that his knowledge base was complete (he is Volvo Certified and spent years at a dealership). When daughter picked up the car from Dan, the bill was more than reasonable (on par with what one would pay in less expensive cities), and Dan went to the effort to explain to her what was done, and more importantly, what should be scheduled soon in order to ensure the car's continued safe operation. He has earned our confidence, and I am greatly relieved to have found someone of his caliber to entrust with my daughter (and her car), so far from home. Be advised that Dan's shop is small, parking limited, and his operating hours, 'different'...but his honesty, openness, and knowledge are equal to the best anywhere, and well worth the effort for those who own and maintain 'real' Volvos..I hope he never decides to retire. read more

He came in on his day of to fix my car knowing that I would have to wait 5+ days to get the work done. The guy knows his stuff and goes well out of his way to make his customers comfortable and satisfied A+++] This is my first ever Yelp review and it's the great service I received at Larson's that's got me chiming in. I've had a 89 Volvo since December and had been taking it to another mechanic mostly because it was in a convenient location. I was never really happy with the way things were described to me there and just the general interaction with the owner. He even told me once that I need something fixed that he himself had previous fixed just weeks earlier, which I had to remind him off. So I tried Larson's and I'll probably stick with them. It's a tiny garage that holds only 2 cars but Dan makes up for that with his expertise, concise explanation and personality. He explained every single detail of each issue my car had, ranked them in order of necessity (also explaining why) and gave me some quotes. He made me feel at ease and open to me firing as many questions at him as I could and did not make me feel like an ass for not knowing much about cars. I'm really glad I decided to check out his shop which has been around since the 80s. A funny side note, I had been explaining to Dan all the problems I had with the mechanic I was going to and he was able to guess which mechanic it was. Amazing.
