An honest and affordable mechanic is a rare and precious thing. These guys have gone above and beyond to save us money and (mostly) deal with issues on our ancient Mercedes utility van in a timely manner. The only thing I'd change is that their communication with customers leaves much to be desired. You need to be very proactive about reaching out to get information and an up-to-date timetable. They're kind and supportive once you get them on the phone, you just have to be persistent. Thomas & Thomas are two Hungarian brothers Pal (pronounced "Paul") and Adam akin to "Click & Clack." My family has owned numerous Audi's & VW's and we've been using these guys since the 80's. They are partly why we continually drive VW & Audi because it stays affordable and reliable with them as our mechanics. They focus on European cars but they still fix Japanese & American too. They are diesel experts & know a lot about the older European cars too that the dealer usually avoids. They try to source the better made European parts when possible & don't jack the prices up on parts. They'll even let you bring your own parts in to install. They are about half the cost of the dealer in terms of total labor & even the local VW dealer would refer older cars to them. I am an Audi Club NW, BMW CCA PS, Porsche CA driving instructor & I have referred many happy customers here. If you want kiss ass service with a fancy shop go else where. Just drop the car off and they'll fix it quickly for a good price. No appointment necessary because they're usually wrenching on a car to answer the phone. Avoid. Wanted to like them but ultimately too many not-so-great things happened and that let me to question their integrity. For my car - they told me I needed an expensive $1000 service and when I took to dealer for diagnosis, learned all it needed was a simple procedure at a fraction of cost est from Thomas and Thomas. On previous work they'd done, I had to return more than once to get on-board computer reset or I ended up having to go get the part for them because they failed to do so - both of which consume my time. Their diagnosis skills are so-so and my experience required multiple follow up visits to have them finalize. For my partners car, they repaired coil packs and less than 12 months later, same issue, coil pack issues. For my friends car, they held their car for nearly one week with no updates only to share in the end the solution was beyond their abilities. read more

These guys are the best. I used to take my VW Golf to a small VW/Audi shop which was fine but the prices just seemed really higher than they should be. Been around to different shops but never really found the "one". Took a chance on these guys after a friend suggested them. I'm not someone who knows anything about cars, and I've had some expensive lessons because of this, but these guys did not try to sell me on anything that I didn't need. Perhaps not a frilly, fancy place (and they were very busy so don't expect the turnaround time to necessarily be instant) but I'm glad - I just needed my car fixed. My car needed a new power steering pump and hose. I ordered parts online and had them do the labor. When they installed the pump, turned out it was completely dead. Even more fabulous, the power steering hose was incompatible. Had to order a new replacement pump (and wait for that to arrive) - and this one worked but ended up being really noisy according to Pal (pronounced "Paul"). As he told me later he ended up picking up a used part from elsewhere that worked great and cost half as much as the one I bought online. I thought I should probably buy them a case of beer or something as a token of thanks. Pal was pretty nice about the hassle. Oh, and they put a clamp on my front bumper (which had been sagging from an accident) and made it look 10 times better - didn't ask them to do this. These guys might be the One. read more

Very very bad experience here. Unfortunately unlike others, I did not have good experience with them. I had trouble with my car trunk not opening. Came here to fix it. After the day they said that there was one small piece they need to order, and that it will arrive the next day. So I took my car back and went the next day as they asked me to. However the part was not there the next day either. They asked me to wait till the afternoon and said to take the car back (again) and come back the day after. I asked them that if they were certain the part would be there. They said yes. But the next day it was still not there. I wasted 3 days lots of time trying to coordinate my daily commute to work with dropping the car off. However nothing was done. No apology ever given. After the 3rd time they said they'd call me when the part arrives. Never got a call from them ever. Not only that, they messed up my car - They popped some fuse near the dashboard and that my trip and time got reset every single time I turn off the car. They messed up with my trunk that some part has come loose. They also messed up with my driver side door - the switch that is used to open up the trunk. They are now loose and I can't even get them fixed without changing the whole door panel. I will not recommend anyone to come to this place. read more

The good and bad. Good, they fixed my car's oil leak and did it for a fair price. Bad, the first time they sent me home after a 60k service, it was leaking so badly, the low oil light came on after day and i almost toasted my GTi. And they misplace some of the under carraige paneling. I'm giving five stars because they said initally they had thought the leak was from a loose drain plug and they were able to fix the problem right away once they figured out where it was coming from. The car no longer leaks and i think uses less oil than it used too. (perhaps there was a slow leak all along.) So if you are able to participate in helping them help you keep the car running, this is a good place to go. read more

Thomas and Thomas are great neighborhood mechanics! I took my 2005 Hyundai in to have the center console/gear and heating dial lights replaced. Turns out that the lights are not sold or avail separately If Pal had not engineered a solution i would have had to purchase a whole new heating system to the tune of almost $500 just for the part!! Instead they found a work-a-round that only cost me $250. Big thanks guys! I really appreciate it!! Additionally over the summer I had to have the air conditioning repaired in an 1999 Ford van.....parts for this are definitely not avail.! It took some time and research to find and confirm the parts were correct but Pal preserved and found what was needed and made the repair. Approachable and Affordable. These guys have been keeping my vehicles alive for years, my wife and I have three BMW's 334,xxx miles on a '89 325ix, 225,xxx miles on a 2000 528i and 145,xxx miles on a 2000 M5. They always pick the best quality parts & use the right fluids, full synthetic oil etc... and are very reasonable. Adam and Pal are very focused on what is necessary to keep a vehicle safely running and not concerned about finding problems to fix that are not in fact PROBLEMS. I second the review that says to not mistake a no nonsense straightforward approach with surliness because they are busy but still manage to get stuff done on time. I no longer live in Seattle but have driven down from Bellingham every time I needed to see them for five years, they have always accommodated my schedule and treated me right. Pal and Adam appreciate it if you bring lunch once in a while... I spend a lot of time there. i have had automatic transmissions fluids and filters changed twice in the 528i, no such thing as lifetime fluids if you want to drive the mileages I do. Alternators, CV joints, Brakes, Shocks, Struts, Control arms, Tune ups and Radiators done over the years. BMW power steering fluid reservoir,and hoses WILL fail around 90,xxx miles. They are frequently replacing parts on my vehicles and I feel it is a much better deal than driving a brand new vehicle AS LONG AS these guys are IN BUSINESS. They really do make driving a nice European car feel new even if it is 31 years old. Talk to Adam & give them both Good Food Or Bring in Good Coffee for best results. I had many things that had to be done on my car, clutch, thermostat, brakes, etc. I got quotes from 2 other shops then after this place was recommended by a friend, I asked for a quote and it was significantly less than the other 2 places. Significantly. I wanted to be sure I was comparing apples to apples, so I dropped off the exact quotes with all the parts and labor costs line by line in writing from the other shop that did the initial quote to be sure they knew everything that had to be done, so I knew I was getting a quote on everything I knew I needed. I dropped my car off on Friday and got it back Monday,which is when they told me it would be done with everything done at the price they told me. This is not a super fancy, high end shop, this is a shop with guys that have been there a long time and do what they say they are going to do at the price they said they would do it at. I will take that anytime over an espresso machine in the lobby. :) read more

Avoid at ALL COSTS! Went in for a diagnostic check, took four weeks for a response on what was wrong, was told the car was unfixable and they would scrap it. Ended up with a $1000 impound charge from the city instead. Car was put on the street with no warning or notification from the shop and subsequently towed. Daily calls received no reply or response. When they didn't answer their phone I stopped by to find out what was going on and they hadn't even looked at it yet. Their prices are fair, they use quality parts, have super reasonable labor charges, and do a great job. Plus, a few weeks ago I had an emergency light pop on and immediately drove over to them.. within minutes they found the problem, cut off a piece of a leaking hose, and sent me on my way without charging me a penny. Great, honest work-- they'll keep working a problem til they solve it; and since a couple years ago have been providing some basic and gratis detailing after mechanical work is complete. I can always count on them for cheerful, friendly, no-nonsense service on things as varied as emissions issues, a busted motor mount, routine maintenance, chasing down electrical issues, etc. Only (slight) gripe is that they get very busy and sometimes it's hard to reach them at a given moment. read more

Our experience with Thomas & Thomas was very negative... I first brought our 97 VW gold here to have them find out why our check engine light was on. They said it was a common issue with Golfs, and that the checked out the rest of the car, and that there were no problems with it. 2 weeks later, the golf developed a coolant leak in our car, so we took it in to get it fixed. They neglected to call us after it was fixed, so they had our car for the weekend after it was ready. I picked up our car, and two days later, the coolant light was back on. We brought the car in 3 times to get this fixed, and they didn't fix the problem, until finally the head gasket blew, shooting cooling all over, and leaving us stranded and waiting for a tow truck for 3 hours. We had the car towed back to them to fix it, and they charged us almost $1000 to fix the problem... this was the 4th time we had taken it in for the coolant leak! The found another problem when they were fixing this (something with the heater core), but we were fed up with them and took it to a new mechanic, who told us that the new problem was a result of the head gasket blowing, which was a result of Thomas and Thomas not fixing the problem the first 3 times we brought it in. So yeah... I am never going here again, and am telling everyone I know not to either. They were terrible about not calling me everytime the car was in, and I had to call and check on the status. And they failed to correctly diagnose our coolant leak which lead to much more extensive problems, and about $2000 dollars more in repair bills. read more

I know what parts cost, and some places really go too far on markup. Not this place. They also know where to get good quality parts at good prices. Absolutely fair labor charges, perfect workmanship and they go above and beyond in service. Last week they dealt with my wife's Honda civic many ailments, and delivered the car to our house after service spotlessly clean, which is amazing considering the kid + dog general slobbiness of that thing. The most amazing mechanics in Washington State. These guys have the best customer service and I totally trust them. They actually provided me with a diagnosis without charging me for it. It was absolutely amazing!!!!! My last "family mechanic" took me for almost 1000 bucks to do a 60K mile tune up on my Toyota Tundra, these guys did the same exact thing (except a little bit more) on my 90K tune up and it was 300.00 . They are a no nonsense shop that does good work at fair prices. They aren't just looking to make a quick buck. I had trouble with the shifter in my Golf after I installed an aftermarket part to make it shift faster. It never shifted smoothly again afterward, but it was quicker, when it would go into gear anyway. I needed to sell the car and figured I'd needed to get it sorted out beforehand. $50 later they had installed my original shifter and adjusted it so it shifted like new again. Very pleased with the outcome. A word of warning, they are all about the work, not customer service. If they don't call you back it's because they are out in the shop. Try again.
