They initially replaced the battery (at premium prices), but the car died again two days later. After towing it back, they kept it for a week with no updates, eventually charging me nearly $1,000 in labor just to "tighten cables" and drive it around town. I've never done a review, so you know this sucked because I'll live with mediocrity. That's life, but this was a step above and beyond. Took my car to this place because of proximity. Called ahead of time to ensure I would get in back in one day or to make arrangements, etc. Drop it off first thing in the morning, as instructed. Maybe at about 4, and after a call around lunch by me to see what was going on, I get a call it's ready for pickup but nothing has been done. I go in for a slightly over $200 bill for the diagnostic. I already knew what was wrong with it and was told it would be fixed in one day. I pay without any gruff because hey, at least now maybe they'll fix my car, and often when places have already charged you for the diagnostic or whatever, they reduce the labor on the fix. So I'm leaving, without much help from the staff, and I say, so what's the deal, you'll call me when the part comes in (no parts is why I was told they did nothing to my car that day). Guy doesn't acknowledge me much, but I'm thinking he's busy. It's been a couple of weeks, and no one ever called. Hey, why bother, they got $200 out of me to do nothing. In the meantime, I took my car to Mo's, and it was a very pleasant experience and a couple hundred dollars cheaper than what this place quoted for work they never did. But like I said, not having a car for a day and paying $200 for the pleasure of it, that's service! Seriously, though. Very disappointed because I would have like to have been a customer. Clearly I will not be back. I'm a gambler. You win some, you lose some. I lost going here. read more

We have gone here for several years for our xc60 but will not be returning. Immediately after a maintenance check up our AC and heat stopped working properly. They diagnosed it as a computer issue and said we needed to take it to a dealership service department. We did and in addition to needing to fix the electrical issue, they discovered the need for 1,700 in repairs due to the support for the engine failing on one side and oil collecting in part of the engine. The service provider was very surprised this wasn't caught already. With the combination of missing obvious issues and new issues arising immediately after taking it in for service, we will not be returning. read more

So, after standing in line at Avis for three hours to pick up our reserved rental, we get a flat, on the freeway, in Seattle, rush hour traffic, just 10 minutes out of the airport pick up lot. Unbelievable. Shame on SeaTec Avis, but that's another story. Anyway, we had to pull off the freeway with our flat and into an unknown neighborhood and started driving through the hills looking for a gas station. None to be found. BUT on the corner of this neighborhood, we found Larry's Volvo repair. My husband explained what happened to the mechanics and they were amazing. Like a Formula One professional team, suddenly they were surrounding the car and fixing the flat, in like five minutes. They were amazing, so kind and helpful. We are in our 70s and honestly, didn't know what we were going to do. They were like angels we just happened upon. We don't live in Seattle, but if we did, they would be the only ones I'd trust with our car. Anytime you have a business that shows such kindness and gives help like this when they don't have to, you know they probably have integrity in their business dealings, too, and it's getting more and more difficult to find mechanics with integrity. Used to take my car here all the time, spent a fortune there. They replaced an angle gear twice with used junk then gave up on me while my car sat for a year in their yard after paying thousands, Warren said it was out of warranty. Busted my hood latch, then just billed it to me! Then one of the employees over filled my oil by TWO QUARTS AND BLEW OUT MY SEALS! They sucked it out and called it good.... All I smell is BURNING OIL, I would never recommend them! The shop floor is so dirty and you get in and out of my beautiful car...I don't care if he hit his head it ain't right Warren. You suck! I am the latest owner of a 1992 Volvo 240 GL Sedan. I bought it in a private sale from a Volvo enthusiast. I a long time customer of Larry's Volvo. I use to go to another place in West Seattle but have been going here for over a decade because of the price and responsiveness. But this time is even more special. I called Warren to advise him that my son tried to fix his own headlamp. Needless to say he failed. He ended up shorting a fuse as he was trying to fix it but he didn't know that was the issue. As he was exchanging the bulb a piece of plastic feel down and couldn't locate it. So when I tried to explain it to Warren and said we dropped a black chicklet looking thing he said to come in and he'd look at it. Warren figured out it was a blown fuse and exchanged it. headlamp is working perfectly! I've been dealing with serious grating noises in my 13 yo volvo for 8 months and my usual repair shop could not figure it out, recently saying they thought it was a transmission problem that would cost more to fix than the car was worth. I decide I might as well try to find a Volvo specialist for one last evaluation and found Larry's with its terrific reviews. Larry's diagnosed and then fixed the problem (engine mounts) within two days and restored the car to great shape. I was stunned. Larry's is a small shop and a little funky in a Beacon Hill neighborhood, but it has Volvo mechanics who know what they are doing. And really nice people too. I'm currently living in Spokane and commuting to Seattle to work. I was going to load my car up on Thursday night to head home for the holidays after work on Friday, and after I started her up, my alternator belt decided to fall apart due to a seized idler pulley. I called Warren at 0800 sharp and told him about my problem. Without hesitation, Warren told me to send the car to him and he would get me squared away. He was very patient with my frequent calls to check in and was very up front with progress and estimated cost. I was most impressed with Warren's good nature and honesty. He knew I was in a jam and instead of taking advantage of that, he billed me very fairly. As long as I own a Volvo, Larry's Independent Volvo will always be my first choice when I need service or repairs in Seattle. read more

I left my car with them to troubleshoot an exhaust issue and they used it to haul parts without my permission. I came back early to get something out of the car and saw there was an engine cylinder head laying on top of my stuff in the back. I asked them about it and they said they brought it back from a machine shop while out test driving my car. First of all, if they had asked my permission to haul a cylinder head with my car I would have told them to take a flying leap, and I'm certain that's why they didn't ask. Second, they set it right on top of, next to and above things I had in the car that could have been damaged by a heavy block of metal, including two valuable antiques. Third, they laid it over the folded-down backrest which is somewhat hanging on the hinges, putting much more leveraged weight on them than I'd have ever done myself. They said they needed to drive it again to find the problem but I no longer trusted them with my car. So I politely declined, asked for my key back and left. I feel violated, like they misused my car for their own business purposes and didn't really care if they damaged it or my possessions while doing it. I caught a bad vibe right when I got there, partly because they told me the diagnosis was going to be free of charge. I generally don't trust shops that offer free inspections and troubleshooting. It feels like bait. I should have trusted my instincts and bailed. I don't like leaving bad reviews for blue collar types. That's my background too. But I felt like this was so out of line something needed to be said. read more

Dealership said they couldn't get to my car (needed to be towed in) for at least two weeks. Larry's said they could get to it the following day and it was actually finished that day so only one day without a car! They were honest, quick, mentioned a couple things to keep an eye on vs. trying to hard sell me to fix them now (which is not necessary). Can't say enough about their service!! I've got an older Volvo station Wagon, "The White Loaf" It will get you from A to B just don't be in a hurry. Check engine light comes on so I pull in. BANG. Warren comes out checks it out and then won't take a dime. WHAT! Really, no service charge, zero, zip, nada. So I go to pick up a dozen donuts for the crew. Everybody is happy. One more for the file.... My creampuff Nissan Maximum has a check engine light come on. SO... take it to Warren. O2 sensor says the computor. OK.. fix it. Well... after a few days in their shop ( i'm thinking$$$) Warren says.. its not the sensors its in the computor and he can't repair it. WOW.. ok. what's the damages for a couple of shop days... I have had the worst experience with this shop. I was referred to them by our family mechanic, I read their reviews, I thought they were going to be trustworthy but I was wrong. I've spent over $7000 in repairs, including replacing an engine. I bought one of there rebuilt engines but a month after I bought it the check engine light was on and the codes were the same as my old engine. They gave me the run around on fixing it and every time it went to them something else went wrong. I had to keep spending thousands of dollars there, pretty much rebuilt my whole car, they've broken my radiator and let me drive off with no fluids, the list just goes on. I would not give them your business. Find an honest and trustworthy place. read more

Are you kidding me? There should be 50 reviews with 5 stars for this place!! My Volvo wagon has been serviced here for the last 6 years. I have experienced nothing but the best Larry's has to offer. You want an honest mechanic for anything Volvo? This is your place. Warren, the owner, is part of a dying breed of honest mechanic in this day and age. I bring my car here for every scheduled service--certified by Volvo for any warranty, as well--and I have never experienced any "upsell" of services. Ever. When you pick your car up, Warren will explain anything that may need to be serviced, how long you can go without the service AND how much it will cost! No bait and switch tactics here. One time the service engine light was on, I drove straight to Larry's without an appointment and parked right in front. Instead of scheduling an appointment for a later date, one of the mechanics, Janusz, met me at my car curbside with computer in-hand. He plugged the computer into the car and ran a diagnostic right on the spot. He informed me of what was wrong and said it wasn't of dire importance. He reset the light and I was on my way. ALL WITH NO CHARGE!! Any other dealer/mechanic would have charged at least $50-$100. With the low maintenace and reliability of my car, I wouldn't think of purchasing another brand especially knowing that Larry's Volvo has my back. I've had occasion to need some work done and was able to leave my car and drop my keys for them to check out. They were able to take a look and advise me with my options before proceeding. It's amazing what it costs to have your "scheduled service" done these days. The Volvo dealer quoted me $500 for the 60,000 mile service, so I decided to look elsewhere. Larry's did the same service for about $283 (incl. tax)! I was able to wait for my car and they had it finished in about 2 hours. The WIFI was fast, and they served me coffee. Everyone I interacted with at Larry's was super nice and convivial. I highly recommend this place for a great experience. TIP: If you're going to wait for your car, keep in mind that there are no restaurants or coffee shops in any direction for at least 1 mile. read more

I read all the great reviews and stopped in to have them look at my 2013 XC90 that was making a rattling noise on acceleration. The owner greeted me and immediately went out to take a look and then had his main mechanic go for a quick drive to see if he could figure it out. It's very rare to find a busy shop these days that will take the time to do those things. They all want to schedule you out a week and charge you for the diagnostic. They gave me their best guess without putting it on a rack free of charge and offered to do the job later in the week when they had their first opening. No pressure just very helpful, and a reasonable quote for the repair as well. They also answered some questions on another repair I needed and turned out to be the only shop that gave me the correct answers and that includes the Volvo dealer and some of the best shops in the area. I would highly recommend them; good people and they know their Volvo's. read more

I have owned Volvo's for over 20 years, and have had VERY mixed results in having them worked on. From the first moment I stepped into Larry's I had a good feeling about them as I saw the owner running the show from behind the front desk, and witnessed him giving some free advice to a customer on the phone. I don't know about you, but sometimes you just have a feeling about people. That is what it was. I knew that he wasn't out to rip people off by taking advantage. There are so many great reviews here and I'm happy to add another one. My experience with Larry's far surpassed any I've had with a car repair shop ever. Initially they diagnosed my new to me, used xc90 with needing a new accessory belt, as well as a tensioner and idler pulley. After replacing these parts the sound in my engine persisted which meant there was a very rare internal issue with the engine that meant a costly repair at the dealership. After realizing all this, Larry's only charged me for the initial inspection I'd brought it in for and even let me off the hook for an hour they spent working on my steering wheel. In total my bill should have been about 1 thousand dollars but being there was a misdiagnosis and given the scope of the problems they ate the costs associated and I got out of there for less than 200. It's not required for a company to be so incredibly forthright and stand up but when it came down to it Larry's did right by me in a way that far surpassed my expectations and their liabilities. My $1200 diagnosis and quote on a power steering pump and reservoir from my "dealer" was fixed by Larry by simply tightening the hose clamps...cost $42 dollars...plus the gave me additional recommendations on items I can fix in the future ...something my $300 75K check up at my "dealer" also failed to provide. Worth checking out before you assume your "dealer" is looking out for you. Honesty is still alive in the auto repair biz. read more
