    Shrimp cocktail
    Christopher Z.

I cheated on Yelp and went to Trip Advisor before my most recent visit to South Padre Island. On Trip Advisor, I read about Las Olas. It's tough to find... it's in the complex of the Peninsula Inn... so you have to go through the hotel and pool to get to this restaurant. It was clear after sitting in here, that most of their meals are served to the hotel and pool area, and not to outsiders coming in. There was only one other table in the restaurant, and they were staying at the hotel. Either way, the place is very nice. It's in a circular shaped building with windows facing the pool, and the gulf. Modern decor adorns the room. We ordered shrimp cocktail, fish tacos, and shrimp enchiladas. The entrees were simple, with just a few fresh ingredients in each. The highlight of the meal was the shrimp cocktail. Don't be fooled by the appearance. There are only two shrimp hanging on the top of the glass, but there are plenty more floating in the cocktail sauce. And the sauce was good too... different... it clearly was made with fresh squeezed oranges. The food took a little while to come out so they brought us some chips and salsa. Seriously... this was maybe the best salsa I've ever had. It was uniquely different too. It had a spice that I couldn't place. Almost Indian tasting. I loved it. If you're in the mood for some good baja style Mexican food, then give this place a whirl. It's a little upscale, and can be tough to find, but it's worth the visit.

Margarita on the rocks and virgin mangorita.

Incredibly nice place for dinner. Buried at the back of the Peninsula Condo/Resort. Fronts the large dunes behind the beach. It is hike from the parking lot, but we were picked up by staff in a cart. They must run regularly since our wait was minimal. The decor is simply lovely. The food was fresh and light. We had fish and shrimp tacos. Both dishes were well presented and tasted great. Drinks were super - my wife had a fresh virgin mango margarita, which most places don't seem to provide. Service was very nice and food was excellent. View is gorgeous. It is worth the discovery off the beaten path.

The woman who opened the door (who turned out to be our server) seemed bothered she had to open it. There were no prices on the menu so we braced ourselves. My husband asked why there were no prices on the menu and the server simply advised there were no prices on the menu. We ordered coffee and water only to have our server tell us they only had bottled water ($). When she brought our drinks, she also brought a small bowl of animal crackers??? (There were no children with us). It was disappointing to have the coffee served in melamine cups AND wasn't very good. My husband ordered a plate which came with eggs, ham, 2 biscuits, and hash browns; I ordered the oatmeal with toast. It took a long while for our orders to arrive yet there was only one other couple in the restaurant (who had a different server than us). The 2 biscuits on my husband's plate looked as though they had taken 1 biscuit and split in half. He said the ham tasted like Spam and the hash browns were greasy. The eggs were okay. My oatmeal was okay. To their credit, it did come with raisins, pecans, cinnamon, and butter on the side. Neither our server nor the other one working were very friendly which didn't help make the food taste any better. The sign said this is Doña Carmen #4; maybe 1-3 are good.

I am on my phone watching Facebook reels. She started to talk loudly to them about things she was not happy about and got louder and louder and got more and more descriptive of things she was not happy about. She spoke Spanish to them and I think she assumed I did not understand Spanish. It got to the point that I felt embarrassed for the employees and I raised the volume on my phone so that I did not have to hear what was being said. It did not work! That made me very upset and I began to get a tight knot in my stomach. She was very loud and talked to them in a very condescending and mean manner. I lost my appetite!!! I could only take so much. I got up from my chair, walked over, interrupted the meeting to motion my waiter to me and told him to please cancel my order because I did not like what was happening in front of customers. I said it was not right. And, I made sure to look at her when I said that. I also said I will never return and walked out. I feel sorry for the employees. I really hope she did not take it out on them. But, I had to say something. This happened exactly as I have written it. The woman did not respond to me in any way. I think she was shocked.

We did have to wait a few minutes to be seated, and weren't sure why we weren't given menus. But we saw signs indicating to order at the back counter. The food took about 10-15 minutes to come out, but it was warm and delicious. My husband got the blacked mahi sandwich, I got the Iron Skillet Shrimp (pictured) and a Turbo Pelican Colada. Everything was delicious! The iron skillet came with 8 huge shrimp and I opted for garlic butter, which gave a dipping sauce. The fries were HUGE! Our kids loved the fries, burger and hot dogs that they ordered. The drink I ordered was strong and tasty, the toasted coconut was the icing on the cake. It has become one of our favorite places to eat on South Padre Island. One of my favorite things is how genuinely pet-friendly they are. They even have a dog menu, so our dachshund, PeeWee, gets to enjoy lunch with us too. It's refreshing to find a restaurant that truly welcomes the whole family, including four-legged family members. After watching the KRGV Take 5 segment, I loved learning that the new owners were the cooks before taking over the restaurant. You can absolutely tell they know what they're doing. The quality of the food, the consistency, and the atmosphere have all been elevated under the new ownership while still keeping the laid-back island vibe. If you're looking for great food, excellent service, reasonable prices, and a place where everyone--including your dog--is welcome, Mahi Nic is the place to go. We'll definitely be back again and again with PeeWee and the rest of our family and friends. Highly recommend!
