We stopped by Las Trancas on our way home to Pittsburgh. We were staying at the Hampton Inn so it was the perfect location to have dinner at. Just your usual chain Mexican restaurant with lots of space inside. We were seated instantly and there was no wait on the chips and salsa (the best part). Our server was attentive and friendly. We got the guacamole mexican style which was so good. I ordered the fajitas tropicales (which also came with rice and beans) and my husband got the molcajete. On our way home from a long road trip, we decided to spend the night in Charleston, WV. Our hotel had a list of nearby restaurants so we decided to go Mexican. Restaurant is huge and even though it was quite busy, we were immediately seated. I had assumed it might be a bit slow since they were so busy. Not at all-I've never seen so many servers hustling so hard. Our chips and salsa were quickly dropped off while we studied the menu. Chips were warm and fresh and the salsa had a nice taste to it. We both opted for fajitas-one steak and one chicken. Both the steak and chicken were excellent in my opinion. Vegetables and meats had a nice tasting "simmer sauce" which produced great flavors. As I had mentioned the excellent service, drinks were never left empty. Also, this has never happened to me in a Mexican restaurant - the manager or owner was active on the floor and stopped by to insure or meal was good. It was better than good. There was a birthday party. No napkin, forks on table. No water. Drinks were ordered but my wife and I arrived and waiter asked me what drink I wanted when I was standing, not sitting. Didn't have the menu. 10 minutes later finally got drinks ordered. Had to wait about 8 minutes to order drinks. Las Trancas for me was similar to most chain style TexMex restaurants. The food was good but I wouldn't say it stands out. The service was great, my waitress paid attention to my needs while eating and offered refills as soon as my glass became low. I have eaten her several times while in Charleston WV. read more

It's a great place to stop if you're craving some Mexican. When I lived in the Southridge area, sometimes we'd eat there once a week. The prices were great and large portions. Service was always fast and dependable. Wait staff is extremely friendly. Also, it was great for events. My son's midget league had their end-of-year party there for all classes. There was plenty of room for us. I LOVE the carne asada tacos. That is my go-to at this restaurant. Double yum! I think I'll run over there again on Friday for some! Casual date night landed us at Las Trancas in Southridge after seeing Jungle Cruise. I was quickly reminded why they are one of my favorite Mexican restaurants. The Las Trancas dip was phenomenal. My chicken chimichanga's where on point; loaded with veggies and tender chicken. My husband got his normal pollo loco and it is hands down the best in the valley. Piled high with two chicken breasts and tons of veggies. You could have fed two people on just his dish. The dip isn't on the menu yet, so you'll have to ask for it, but it's a good change up and only $5, you could make it a meal. read more

7/10 if it were an option, but I felt 3/5 was a tad too harsh. Now, I'm not gonna lie and act like this place is anything all that special. It's your standard Mexican restaurant, nothing more.... But one the things that I really liked about Las Trancas was their Salsa. In fact, I'd consider it some of the best that I've had. It's a less "chunky" salsa too, which is what I prefer. Aside from the food, I thought the service was good and the decor was refreshing. It is a lot more rustic on the interior than your standard Mexican restaurant. I found that to be kind of cool. Good food, consistent, not too pricy. The California Burrito is awesome! It's huge! The Chicken Taco Salad is good. The chips are a little thicker here than other Mexican in the area. Definitely a fan. Cheap menu (reasonable prices, compared to many places) and a heavy (and hot) plate is what you get in return. If you like authentic Mexican, this place has what you're looking for. Service was good. Our server was patient with us ordering. We were pretty indecisive with our selection. Third time was a charm with his return. Delicious food, and clean tables, seating and floors. Do watch out with those plates. VERY hot. Immediately can scold. Again, do be careful with a lot of the plates on the menu. Like, figurative plates but also the literal plate itself. Heh. 45 minutes since we sat down, we still had no food. The place was packed, but we didn't even get silverware or napkins when we were seated! The servers were gruff, and when one of them dropped a dirty knife from another table onto our table (and almost onto my husband's lap), he just made a joke. Our server finally came and let us know they had her bar tending and serving on a busy night. she took our order we waited a 1/2 hour maybe 45 minutes before our food came that was cold like it had been sitting out the entire time. Went here this evening with my girlfriend after work. Ordered cheese dip for an appetizer and it was scorched. I told my waiter and he just said "Ok", took the bowl and brought us back another bowl presumably from the same batch because it was still scorched. The food came out quickly, but it tasted bland. The real fun came about an hour later when I got home and had explosive diarrhea worse than I've ever had aside from when I had a stomach virus. My girlfriend had the same problem. Had to get up and refill my own water. Both my order and my husband's order were not right when they came out. I ordered Huevos Rancheros and told them not to cook them hard and guess what? As for Mexican Food in Charleston, Las Trancas is the best! Chips and salsa are a staple in a Mexican food restaurant ... you know the food is pretty decent if they pass the chips and salsa test! I grew up in AZ, so Mexican food was a staple for eating out, so I think my palate is pretty savvy for determining what is "good" vs "not so good!" Ok, so we're a couple of transplants from South Texas so believe us when we say we went to Las Trancas understanding what state we live in now and didn't expect any fireworks. Well fireworks is what we got! We came in on a busy Saturday night and were seated within 10 minutes. After seating and taking a quick look at the menu we placed an order of carne asada tacos and chorri pollo (chorizo and chicken). We were barely starting to dig into the delicious chips and salsa when our orders came out! It couldn't have been more than 15 minutes. Needless to say as excited as we were to dig in, we were pretty apprehensive.. fast food typically means pre pared "fresh frozen" dishes. But boy were we wrong! The carne asada was tender and tasty and the chorri pollo was chargrilled to perfection. Beans and rice were up to standard and we topped it off with some Mexican dessert (a choco chimmichanga I think it's called). Travelling through South Charleston for work on and off the past few weeks, I've come to expect some pretty mediocre chain restaurants along this gauntlet of strip malls. Had we not been staying at the hotel next door, we probably would have skipped Las Trancas, as from the outside it looks like more of the same. Not much better looking inside. However, every time we have eaten here, we have left completely satisfied; actually we've left stuffed after overeating to a comical degree. Everything we have ordered from the enormous menu has been totally decent, and some of it really delicious (they have a Greek Diner-sized menu with just about any kind of mexican meal you could want--not usually a good sign, but they make it work). Ask for their tomatillo salsa, which is a nice spicy addition to everything, particularly the Texas fajitas. Also, the waiters have always been very attentive, and all smiles when they see us, which is either because they like us, or they aren't sure whether we've slept in the bathroom overnight when we show up the next morning for an early lunch. Joined 17 friends and family for a birthday celebration. My daughter and I shared fajitas for two (we got mixed beef and chicken). It came with six+ flour tortillas, a plate each of beans and rice, a salad plate consisting of lettuce, sour cream, guacamolé, pico d'giao, and I feel like I'm forgetting something, sorry. Portions were generous. We ate our fill and took home enough for 2+ more meals. Ordered the cheese dip, which was perfect consistency and piping hot. House tortilla chips were served hot and were a nice hearty thickness. I drank a Mr Pibb and a Corona (bottled) with a slice of lime. My daughter ordered a strawberry daiquiri (which was served virgin but was fine after she sent it back. Just a miscommunication, easily rectified). Everyone at our table enjoyed what they ordered, which ranged from taco salads for the octogenarian and birthday girl, to various dinner meals. No complaints from anybody! Toddlers were served their beverages in to-go cups with kids and straws and we required three high chairs/boosters -- no problem. The service was good, and at the end, a fancy sombrero was placed on the birthday girl's head and she was served a complimentary fried ice cream. They even serenaded her with the brief but heartfelt Mexican birthday song Las Mañanitas.
