    Smash burger

Solid option in Madison. Try the taquitos and smash burger both were a big hit, with two otherwise picky eaters. Very friendly staff.

    Menu

Stopped in for lunch. I've had Shrimp and Grits everywhere that serves it, New Orleans, Charleston SC, the Jefferson Hotel Richmond, many places in many states and cities. This was hands down my favorite Shrimp and Grits ever. Of all places, Madison Va. I felt like ordering a second serving when done. Great flavor with a little kick. I will order it again without hesitation. But I need to try other menu items. Anyway, nice place, nice service, great flavors. Highly recommend.

It was even more awkward because there were many empty tables in the bigger dining room and only one other party was seated there. We were also a party of 4. But the service and the food were awesome. We had appetizers of a very savory and huge pretzel with beer cheese and mustard sauces to dip it in. And sausage sampler's. Also very tasty. We decided to go there to honor my youngest son, Shane, who passed away a few years back, for what would have been his 52nd birthday. It was a wonderful experience and memory of past visits there with him and his family.

The entire meal I was looking at three empty tables across the dining room. The area is cramped. The wallpaper is peeling. There is grime on the bathroom doors. The view into the kitchen is unglamorous. Our server was reserved and underwhelming. I asked her what she could suggest for a vegetarian. There is one dish - with mushrooms. I asked if the green beans were cooked with ham. She said no and asked if I had food allergies. No allergies - I said I don't eat ham. The server said the beans had stewed tomatoes & mushrooms. I asked if they could leave the mushrooms off. She said, "Yes, if you pick them off." What? I ordered the French onion soup. I told the server I don't eat meat but I can tolerate beef broth. That was her invitation to say they use pork broth in the soup, but she didn't. Hubby ordered the Jager Schnitzel. He enjoyed the veal. The red cabbage was his favorite (he pulled out a bay leaf). The French onion soup tasted off. The creamed corn had three huge pieces of what I assume were husks. Otherwise it was good. The green beans were decent. I picked out the mushrooms. We were overlooked in the back. Hubby asked for a manager when he noticed I wasn't eating my soup. We were surprised that our server was the manager. There wasn't anything in her demeanor that demonstrated leadership or being outgoing. She removed the soup charge off the bill. When we had gaps in service, we asked another server for help (sharp knife, bag, lemons). Paying was a challenge. It is easy to be overlooked in the back of the restaurant. When we left, the hostess asked how we enjoyed the meal. I started to share. She said, "I'm still talking." I wish we hadn't gone inside. The idea of visiting the Bavarian Chef was much better than the actual experience.

In fact, I asked my son what his favorite thing was on our trip in this area, and it was this spot, where they had a fun game of hiding candy canes for the kids to find. We stopped in for lunch and the meal was fantastic. We ordered off the specials menu with the grilled cheese with bacon jam, a bowl of tomato soup and the naan pizza. The grilled cheese was perfectly balanced with salt and savory. And the tomato soup was a delicious pairing. The coffee was hot and tasty. In fact, I came back here several times during our visit to Madison. The biggest hit of all though was the giant chalkboard in the back. Our kids just loved drawing on it as they waited for lunch to arrive. It's such a wonderful spot. We are excited to come back!

My sister and I got vanilla lattes (hers half sweet and mine with an extra shot). We also decided on a pastry. I got the blueberry muffin which was packed with fresh blueberries. She got the churro croissant. I wish we asked to have them warmed. That would've made them even better. Anyways, we enjoyed this pit stop and I'm going to try to find this place again, even if the service in the area isn't the best!

Serving American classics with high quality and great hospitality…read more Sandwiched between two floors of antique malls, Jack's was the perfect stop in the day to get some no-frills nourishment. Their breakfast is incredibly generous and made with ingredients that were fresh, clean, and meticulous in detail. The design of their menu is just so promising with unique twists that are not unheard of, but just an elevated touch when it comes to American diner food as a whole. Things like truffle infused hollandaise, fried green tomato BLT, pairing balsamic with goat cheese, a blackened pork, even mushrooms on the breakfast menu all hint that people developing their menu are confident in their skills in offering something more when it comes to breakfast plates and sandwiches. Their homemade aiolis (highly recommend their pesto aioli) and hot sauce tie any dish together-- breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Things made to this quality are not to be unremarked. Came in with friends so we can try everything on their menu, and we were pleasantly surprised on all fronts. Presentation, ingredients, preparation all elements that made our meals great and were evident across all dishes ranging from protein to carb. Details like toasted bread with already spread with butter, perfectly poached eggs, and brioche as the bun of choice were things we peeped. We would have left satisfied if these details weren't accounted for, but we were so impressed this became a revisit during our short vacation. Their space is greatly spacious, with an open drinks station so its just not pretentious. There is even a section in the front to pick up goods made by local artisans. This is a great place to dine in, no notes.

They were also small and soggy.. something you could get from the frozen aisle at the grocery store. The house salad with iceberg lettuce was $7.50. I had a drink while I waited for my to go order and it was $10 with flat Pepsi. The steak in my sandwich wasn't seasoned and the extra cheese for an extra dollar was missing. The condiment for the sandwich was mayo and there was very little onion. I gave my review a 2 because the hush puppies were delicious and the ranch is made in house. The server was also very sweet. But I won't go back for a poorly seasoned dinner for 2 that costs almost $100.
