Stopped in for lunch. I've had Shrimp and Grits everywhere that serves it, New Orleans, Charleston SC, the Jefferson Hotel Richmond, many places in many states and cities. This was hands down my favorite Shrimp and Grits ever. Of all places, Madison Va. I felt like ordering a second serving when done. Great flavor with a little kick. I will order it again without hesitation. But I need to try other menu items. Anyway, nice place, nice service, great flavors. Highly recommend.

My family grabbed a booth right by the front window, which allowed us to watch the action inside the restaurant as well as Main Street. The coffee was fresh and they were great about topping it off. For our breakfast, I got the cheese and ham omelette served with potatoes. My partner also got an omelette but got the grits for his side (great choice!). My daughter ordered the pancakes, always a hit, and our son got scrambled eggs. We all enjoyed the meals and the great environment inside. It's a great spot for families and filling meals.

Service: kind staff but slow service. Seating was full, so likely some of the wait was due to that. Ambiance: loud to the point it was hard to hear the people sitting at our own table. Table across from us was full of children with no adult supervision, and the younger kids were rambunctious, and the older kids wound up screaming at them. Same kids were yelling outside the bathrooms and wandering in and out of the back repeatedly. Just too loud for me and my group.

I had an excellent, generous, gracious meal at the Bavarian Chef this afternoon for my birthday…read more I'm still groaning! The food was fabulous and we got the full complement of sides--whipped potatoes, green beans, creamed corn, spaetzle, carrots and apples, potato dumplings, zucchini, braised red cabbage, German potato salad, maybe more (my belly's so full, I'm not remembering well...)--rye rolls, red pepper soup with crab, trout with almonds (yum!). We had a very nice dry German Riesling and. German Pinot Noir. The five of us shared a piece of the amazing German chocolate cake. Our server, Nick, was very pleasant, efficient and professional--good at his job and possessing a beautiful, warm smile. I had an Asbach Sidecar that was very well made. I see a negative review from a couple of months ago (~February 2026-ish?) that sounds like it was written about another restaurant, not the delightful Bavarian Chef I know and love. The writer of that poor review seems to have been enjoying the sound of her own writing (which leans toward the overly dramatic and away from anything like an honest review) more than trying to express anything real about the Bavarian Chef. She seems to have an ax of some kind to grind, as she could find not one nice, decent thing to say. I disagree with her with every well-seasoned, perfectly cooked vegetable and flavorful rye roll digesting in my belly right now. The Bavarian Chef is a treat. You'd be a fool to miss it!

In fact, I asked my son what his favorite thing was on our trip in this area, and it was this spot, where they had a fun game of hiding candy canes for the kids to find. We stopped in for lunch and the meal was fantastic. We ordered off the specials menu with the grilled cheese with bacon jam, a bowl of tomato soup and the naan pizza. The grilled cheese was perfectly balanced with salt and savory. And the tomato soup was a delicious pairing. The coffee was hot and tasty. In fact, I came back here several times during our visit to Madison. The biggest hit of all though was the giant chalkboard in the back. Our kids just loved drawing on it as they waited for lunch to arrive. It's such a wonderful spot. We are excited to come back!

She got the churro croissant. I wish we asked to have them warmed. That would've made them even better. Serving American classics with high quality and great hospitality…read more Sandwiched between two floors of antique malls, Jack's was the perfect stop in the day to get some no-frills nourishment. Their breakfast is incredibly generous and made with ingredients that were fresh, clean, and meticulous in detail. The design of their menu is just so promising with unique twists that are not unheard of, but just an elevated touch when it comes to American diner food as a whole. Things like truffle infused hollandaise, fried green tomato BLT, pairing balsamic with goat cheese, a blackened pork, even mushrooms on the breakfast menu all hint that people developing their menu are confident in their skills in offering something more when it comes to breakfast plates and sandwiches. Their homemade aiolis (highly recommend their pesto aioli) and hot sauce tie any dish together-- breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Things made to this quality are not to be unremarked. Came in with friends so we can try everything on their menu, and we were pleasantly surprised on all fronts. Presentation, ingredients, preparation all elements that made our meals great and were evident across all dishes ranging from protein to carb. Details like toasted bread with already spread with butter, perfectly poached eggs, and brioche as the bun of choice were things we peeped. We would have left satisfied if these details weren't accounted for, but we were so impressed this became a revisit during our short vacation. Their space is greatly spacious, with an open drinks station so its just not pretentious. There is even a section in the front to pick up goods made by local artisans. This is a great place to dine in, no notes.
