This time we got the Caviar Juk ($20), Caviar Ppang ($20), two mocktails: Watermelon Basil and Apple a day ($8 each), and the Oli main ($32). Caviar Juk is still elite. The Caviar Ppang is also very good, the foie adds a great fattiness to the brine of the caviar. The duck was tender and rice was interesting and fruity. Both mocktails were also great. I went with a larger group, and I have to say I think I was the only one who was disappointed by the meal. Everyone really seemed to enjoy the cocktails and food. Unfortunately, the dish I ordered was not tasty to me. I got the Bibimbap, which is a dish I've had at other Korean restaurants. By comparison, the one at Yoli was dry with a very unusual taste I couldn't quite place. The meat was almost non existent... very little at all in the bowl, which was mostly rice. Friendly, helpful waitstaff. Relaxing atmosphere. Almost everything is gluten-free. I got the corn cheese which was pretty spicy but also really good. I tried my friend's juk and I loved the flavor. I got a baby bibimbap and actually that and the corn cheese was so filling. I liked my agi bibimbap- I'm glad I tried the red sauce with it too bc it's barely spicy and mostly sweet and a nice complement to the rich meat and egg. I got those two boxed up before I finished so I'd have room for dessert. I tried the hotteok and the texture was odd and the breaded part didn't taste like anything? An upscale and modern Korean spot in Downtown Bend. The inside is moody, good for a romantic dinner but we went for lunch. Their options were untraditional with creative twists on Korean dishes. Prices are higher than standard as well. Their Fried Cauliflower was a nice appetizer. Crispy on the outside and just cooked on the inside so it wasn't too mushy. My Duboo Set Lunch was tasty. I misunderstood it for soup but still really enjoyed it. The tofu was soft and took up the sauce well. Their side kimchi soup and banchans were delicious as well. My family (all Korean) were amazed we could not only get Korean food this good in Bend but also dishes that have been modernized. The chef clearly has accolades and knows how to cook, but can he train a kitchen staff that isn't Korean to execute? The answer is YES. The hwedupbob, dolsot bibimbap and the bulgogi lunch box were all BANGERS. The banchan was so refreshing and somehow tasted new and modern while tasting familiar at the same time. I just went to Seoul in April and I was loving the food here after eating so much there. Hats off to the chef and his wife for running a great restaurant and giving this Korean family the best meal we've had in Bend. read more

Not crisp or lively tasting, rather, tired. Even the presentation in a metal tray was unattractive. Banchan can be the shining stars on a Korean table. Not here. Popped in for lunch, not knowing exactly what to expect. The space inside is pretty nice, laid back, and cozy. I felt a little out of place in gym shorts and a hoodie, but figured it's still Bend, right? The server was great, answering my questions and describing portion sizes really well. We split a kimchi pancake. The texture was really nice, soft with a light seer on the bottom. The dipping sauce served with it was so good. I ordered the Bulgogi Bi Bim Bop. It's a huge portion and is so hot. In fact, the bowl stayed piping hot the entire time I was eating. The flavors of kimchi, beef, and egg were really good. The tangy red sauce served along with the bowl was really tasty as well, although I found it got lost when I mixed it in. It was better if I mixed the rice and then drizzled some on top. There were so many good dishes here it's hard to even process. We did the tasting menu to try all the things. The chef was very accommodating as we came with my friend's kid and they didn't make him order the tasting menu thankfully. Most memorable bites were the jook (don't sleep on this one, I was so surprised!) and the samgyupsal. I didn't actually like either dessert, but I was super satisfied with the savory dishes. So delicious! I've only ever been for lunch when the menu is a little smaller and less expensive and the dining room is near empty. Service is quick and efficient. The lunch set is delicious, all protein options are equally delicious. You can also make an amazing meal ordering a few appetizers (most of which are vegetarian). We always order extra banchan (orders usually come with 3, for a small fee you can get 3 more). The kimchi is vegetarian and delicious but definitely Americanized with less funk. Friday night dinner with friends. Started with the Yellowtail hwe and the fried cauliflower. Hwe was average, not worth the price IMO. We walked along Deschutes river from the south side of Downtown to this restaurant. We were interested in the 5-course menu but were informed that it was not available that day. We had the best Juk (mushroom rice porridge) with runny egg. This rice porridge is the best we ever have. I was honestly shocked at how rude the dude with a Mohawk was to us. We popped in randomly on a Friday night and were only met with a lot of huffing and puffing (and sweat). No hello. No anything other than "reservation?" It was two of us. After a lot of grunting and heavy breathing he just said, "it's not going to work." We asked if we could order to go, and he said bluntly no. Very nice first visit but just did not do it for my tastes. YELP Short Answer: Maybe but there are other options I'd suggest trying first. LOCATION: Not the greatest, on the wrong side of Greenwood. Parking is a hit or miss situation. Find a spot and walk. This location seems to not hold much luck for anyone except the landlord. BUILDOUT: Very nice, tasteful and kind of authentic. It is a little claustrophobic as the windows are opaqued so just feels kind of closed in. MENU: A little confusing, I have had an easier time ordering street food in Korea but I am sure if I return it will be easier. FOOD PREP: Nicely done. FOOD QUALITY: For what we ordered did not like the tastes and the oysters were terrible on our visit. WAITSTAFF: Very nice and like a lot of Bend restaurants, it took 20 minutes to get our bill when we were clearly finished on a not so busy evening. OVERALL VALUE: Not for me, did not think this was worth the visit, sorry, I know they are new but nothing really worked for me. TIP: Ask a lot of questions to make sure you're happy with your order. I visited Bend for the first time recently which meant that I researched all of the best restaurants in town. Yoli came highly recommended and, as far as I can tell, the chef is the only one in Bend with multiple James Beard Award nominations and experience cooking in multiple Michelin star kitchens. Yoli offers an a la carte dinner menu, a five course tasting menu ($60), and a large chef's tasting menu with 24 hour notice ($135 food, $55 beverage pairing). We were here to celebrate so we got the chef's tasting menu. It was enormous and delicious. Service was very good. Laura, the co-owner, called me a few days in advance to confirm our reservation and plans to get the tasting menu and wine pairing. When we arrived for dinner, she had a table prepared for us right next to the kitchen and with our tasting menu displayed in a frame. She was very attentive and served us all of our courses and wine pairings. We liked getting the tasting menu in advance, along with the wines listed for each course, so that we knew what to expect (plus some surprises). Laura and Chef Joe did an excellent job pacing the courses and drinks, with each one ready exactly when we expected. They were also ready with to-go boxes when they noticed us getting too full. The menu was 9 courses as printed (counting seven gansig appetizer bites as one course) and each course had a beverage pairing. There was also a large selection of banchan and three additional surprise courses: a bread course and two extra desserts. The menu (see photos) describes each dish pretty well. A few highlights were: all of the gansig appetizers, daegu (cod), anju (fried chicken and waffle), tangsuyuk (veal), bread, and ssam (pork). We agreed that our least favorite course was the sujebi (truffle noodle); we didn't care for the gummy pulled noodle texture or the flavors involved. By the time we got to the ssam board, we were extremely full, so we packed up most of the last few courses. I felt a little better when Laura said they expected us to be stuffed at this point. The two bonus dessert courses were an ice cream dessert that included chocolate, banana, and spice cake and then an impressive display of cotton candy (three types: kimchi, pear, and apricot) and five types of petit fours. (Bonus courses did not include beverage pairings.) We were so full at that point that we couldn't help but laugh when not one, but two extra desserts showed up. (I forgot to take a photo of the ssam board but it was huge, with three types of pork and wraps along with the banchan) The ambiance at Yoli is a little plain and industrial (like exposed duct work) but they are doing their best with decorations. I particularly liked the wall with menus from other restaurants the chef has visited or staged at. Overall, we really appreciated our meal at Yoli and Laura and Joe's hospitality. A few pieces of constructive feedback: verbally explain each dish and pairing a little more beyond what is printed on the menu (e.g. some of the cooking techniques involved, why that pairing was chosen, tasting notes for the pairing); a few courses could have been smaller and we would not have felt any less full or less pleased (especially puageula foie gras course); the larger courses could have used larger beverage pours; and desserts were not as strong as the savory courses. All the dishes we saw at other tables also looked delicious and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. I will definite visit again the next time in Bend. read more

What a GEM in Bend! It was easy to make a reservation just a few days before we wanted to come. The 5 course dinner is a steal-excellent portions, the food is WONDERFUL and everyone has leftovers. There is a huge array of wines from affordable-not so much, but plenty of options. I almost didn't want to review this place because it was amazing and I don't want to have to fight for a reservation or seating in the future, but that wouldn't be fair. Our party of 3 did the 5 course menu. It was wonderful bc we didn't all have to agree on the same food choices, even though you have to have full table participation. We each got different things. The food came out quickly and was nice and hot. Great service. Every single food item was fabulous. We will be back! The sweaty mowak man was so disgruntled that when asked if he had any seats for 2 people around 7:30pm on a Friday. It was NOT busy and he was almost out of breath to even ask us what we wanted. I asked if to-go option was available and he rolled his eyes and said not a possibility tonight. Without explanation he was rude and dismissive. As someone who lives in an area with A LOT of Korean restaurants, this was a disappointment. The kimichi jiggae literally tasted like kimchi water. I got the grilled pork belly ssam wraps and they weren't that great either. The grilled taste was too smoky and the pork cut used was heavy on the fat instead of the evenly distributed layered fat cuts that is usually used for this dish. They also serve this was seaweed which we weren't a fan of. The lettuce was semi limp :( The banchan was ok. Overall, I would recommend skipping this place if you're looking for quality Korean food because at this price point ($23 for the pork belly wraps and $7 for kimchi water) and taste, the side dishes shouldn't be better than the main course. Parking is available at the front but it is limited so recommend parking just a bit down at the public parking if you have to eat Korean food. read more

A much anticipated addition to the Bend culinary scene, Yoli serves up Korean cuisine from the kitchen of a former Fusion 5 chef. It's located downtown in the space formerly occupied by Bad Wolf Bakery and Bistro and Alpenglow Cafe (and others, I forget) next to Super Burrito on the corner of Wall and Greenwood. The proprietors have done up the space quite nicely. You'll probably need reservations. Menu is definitely Korean-inspired with such standards as bibimbap, bulgogi, kimchi jjigae and of course, various banchan. We were there for lunch which offers a slightly different menu. - Spicy Dak Saendeuwichi (spicy fried chicken sandwich): Not quite like the Korean fried chicken I've had in other places (not in Bend), Yoli's seems like a Korean version of the southern classic Nashville sandwich. And it's very good, even if a bit unwieldy as a sandwich (I ended up using a knife & fork). Packs a good bit of heat. The sandwich comes with an interesting and, for me, unique take on a potato salad side. If you like Nashville's try this one. - Dubu Bi Bim Bap: a tofu version of the classic. The menu bills it as 'spicy tofu' but it really isn't all that spicy. Huge serving, even for lunch. While good, Yoli's version could use a kick. Maybe more of the sauce it comes with. - Sides: spicy fried cauliflower - excellent; corn cheese - very good and unusual. - Set lunch: our tablemates ordered set lunchs which looked good and garnered compliments. Unlike the other lunch items, they come with three banchan. That's what I'm ordering next time I stop in for lunch. When I come here for dinner, the kimchi jjigae (kimchi soup) is an automatic order for me. Several other mains look interesting. Yoli has a liquor license and offers creative cocktails plus beer/wine. Also some unusual non-alcoholic drinks, such as the kwangdong ginseng. Service is impeccable. And the utensils are awesome! I really like the utensils. I don't normally award five stars to a new restaurant but I've been waiting for good Korean food for a while and Yoli fills the bill. Mind you, they aren't the only game in town (5 Fusion, Spork, Bend-O Bento, a truck over at Podski I think), just the only proper Korean-specific sit-down restaurant that I know of). First time in Bend, OR. I came in around 6 pm without reservation and was told there was no table until 8 pm. So, I ended up ordering takeout. The Wagyu beef (from Australia) was not as tender as I expected but still tasty with great flavoring using gremolata. The portion of kimchi fingerling potatoes were overwhelming large and the Banchan which I love came in a very small amount. If they have given me abundance of Banchan, I would have awarded them 5-star rating. I would assume the table service will come with unlimited supply of six Banchan selection. read more

Went into the meal with zero expectations and no prior knowledge of this place or the chef and was absolutely blown away. Instantly when we walked in we were all extremely impressed at the attention spent to proper sound dampening all over the restaurant from low slung panels over the tables to the giant furry wall art, a VERY welcome change to the loud dining rooms we have become accustomed to in this area. The food was all fantastic, both for myself with some knowledge of Korean cuisine and my parents who had never heard the word "kalbi" before and are often reticent to try new things. Service was exceptional, was not expecting table side presentations and our waitress was extremely attentive and helpful with suggestions and answering questions for my celiac partner (nearly everything on the menu is gluten free or can be made so and they are very conscious of cross contamination) The bill was about 20-30% less than I expected given the quality of the food. Went to use the restroom after the dinner and saw multiple James beard nominations and chefs jackets from Alinea and TFL hanging on the wall, which served to fill in some gaps as to how this meal had blown all of our expectations away in such an extraordinary manner. My parents who are locals and again, had never heard the word 'Kalbi' before this evening, couldn't stop talking about how they can't wait to go back again and try more new things. I am THRILLED that this little restaurant was put on my radar by none other than my own critical Korean father, who told me that if I didn't make a stop here while in Bend I would disappoint him (kidding...sort of). And you know that when a Korean dad recommends a Korean restaurant, it usually means it's worth the trip. The highlights: In case you didn't know, the chef behind Yoli has worked for years at high profile restaurants (i.e. Alinea, The French Laundry, Masa, etc.), and has earned the James Beard nomination three times for Best Chef NW. I preface with this info because not only does it deserve to be mentioned, but the culinary experience is evident in the dishes presented here. He and his wife have cultivated a space to share authentic Korean flavors, some dishes also married with less traditional ingredients that lead to really awesome creations. For example, we enjoyed a fois gras dish with strawberry kimchi, Korean passionfruit honey, and gangjeong. We also ordered yukhoe, wagyu beef tartare that is made even more special with Korean pear and wasabi creme fraiche. Of course, we had to also try the Korean fried chicken, which had a delightful crunch and was doused in a just-spicy-enough sticky sauce. Do what we did and order their bultada (fire) sauce on the side, and drizzle it into the juk (mushroom rice porridge), a dish that's tasty on its own, but sparkles when some spicy is added. The improveables: I really had to rack my brain for things this place can improve on. The main issue I had was that the kimchi in the banchan was not spicy! I wanted to blame this on the fact that I had finished a bottle of soju and was maybe a bit less aware of my senses, but I was surprised at the lack of zing with the kimchi. It was fresh with good flavor, but just not what I was expecting. And maybe it was a dud batch. My second improveable is that I wish the fried chicken was bone-in; clearly, this is simply preference because the dish is delicious, but I love cleaning off bones and found myself longing for that experience. Overall, the meal was unique and outstanding, the service was prompt and friendly, and the ambience is lovely. I have heard from some people (mainly Portlanders, admittedly) that the food scene in Bend is lacking. I think that they just need to visit Yoli so they can have their minds changed. read more

Let's face it. Bend, although a great city for culinary experiences, has limited Asian choices. Because of that, Yoli has a large gap to fill. We are experienced foodies that have been to lots of Korean restaurants over the years, different kind of Korean styles... so as such, my first advice to you is: when you visit Yoli, please set your expectations right. Read on. This is a nice place- visually beautiful, kind of fancy, a nice clean interior, comfortable chairs that look like they're Eames-inspired. No musty smells, no stench, clean floors, good lighting with warm color temperature, a pleasant cost ambiance that is good for dates, during which people can actually converse with each other without having to shout. Quiet background music that I didn't even pay attention to. The food itself is very clean, well prepared- but as I hinted already above, more of a fusion taste than a hardcore authentic Korean taste, I would say. Set your expectations right. They do use the right set of sauces and flavors. Good quality ingredients. Wine list was nice but we ordered by the glass and selection was good- about $15 per wine glass on average, acceptable price I would say. Didn't drink Soju but their selection was also decent. Also they had a large list of South Korean lager beers, like Hite, Cass etc. And one local IPA for people like myself lol. A good selection of teas that they steep for you in a fancy teapot. Also they offer flat or sparkling water, in nice bottles. Cool. To be honest I would have definitely given them 5 stars to give them a boost (which they deserve) but I was a bit upset that they were so stingy with their Banchan small plates. We got our appetizers (yukkae, pancake - see my pix) and then our main dishes arrived, and we still had not seen any Banchan so my family was already kind of baffled... and I had to go ahead and request it. When we finally got it, it was kind of a tiny quantity, we were surprised because we were 4 people. And when we eat Korean food we are accustomed to always get a generous amount of Kimchi, Kkakdugi, Kongnamul-muchim, etc... basic fundamental elements. And also I had seen other pix on Yelp and Google- I knew they served other people much fuller Banchan plates, and those were merely 1 or 2 person groups... We ordered some of their priciest items on the menu so we felt it was kind of odd, to be honest. I hope they do read their reviews so they can fix this small detail, small issue- be generous with the Banchan, as it's a Korean custom, integral part of the Korean Experience (yes, with capital E). I had the Australian Wagyu, with bone marrow covered with some kind of green pesto sauce (that I would have preferred to not have as I like the marrow with a bit of salt only) and kimchi potatoes, with a small accent of kelp salad, and a side of white rice (purple Korean rice was not provided as an option but the white rice was excellent). My steak was well prepared, and very tasty and flavorful. When I read the word "wagyu", it automatically sets a very high bar or expectation as a "super tender marbled texture"; this wasn't as tender- it was more like a really high quality flavorful sirloin. Very satisfying, even if it didn't quite melt in my mouth. Like I said- set the right expectations here, to be happy! I was really disappointed with the Korean Fusion. I liked the jeun and that's about it. The bibimbap was super mushy. I was taken aback when i ordered it saying it was my favorite dish and then the lady was condescending with asking me if I've ever had it before, considering she couldn't even pronounce it correctly and enunciated each syllable of the word like I was a child. The bibimbap had absolutely no crispy rice at the bottom, which is everyone's favorite part and the reason for the dolsot. My Korean friend I took there was embarrassed for me. Maybe it was an off night, I'm not sure, but the entire experience was mediocre at best. I was sad I looked forward to it for a while. Also. I booked over a month in advance for reservations because I was coming from out of town and was told specifically to book on a Sunday for the tasting menu. The person who called me a few days before asked me if i wanted the chefs tasting menu or the 5 course menu and I told them I wanted the tasting menu. Literally right after I said that. They told me "we don't do chefs tasting menu on Sundays". I found it very odd that they asked me that question as if it was a choice. read more

The portion was small given the price. Food was a bit salty and too much sauce. The eggplant dish is really a rice cake dish with eggplant as garnish. The salmon dish has two really small pieces of salmon (slightly over cooked) and half place of sauce. Waitress was busy entertaining another table and ignored us for most of the time. read more
