We found Gary Lavere's shop after hours and hours of research and so many phone calls to other mechanics who rushed and didn't the fix the source of the problem or simply didn't want to spend time on the car because it's older and took too much time. We contacted several Audi Repair shops before deciding on Lavere's. We needed the PVC valve replaced which is a chore as it is under the supercharger and labor intensive. Gary was upfront with the cost of the repair and kept as close to the estimate as possible(hoses commonly break during this job and this was the only additional cost). I am not exaggerating when I say this place is awesome, and Gary is a VW angel. My 2010 vw beetle convertible is my baby. I love her, and we've been on so many roadtrips and beach adventures together. So, I was bummed when she broke down...she just died on the side of the 80 near the Bay Bridge. That was November, 2023. I took her to Royal Motors in San Francisco, which is a VW dealer, and has been my go to since I got the car. Well, that was a big fix for $800, and I thought we were good. Until she died again a week later. She went back in the shop, and was in there for a month. Fixed it. Then bam, a week later, back in the shop. This went on for over a year, with the car going in and out of the shop for various things wrong with it. This was very inconvenient, frustrating and costly for a teacher like me. The last time I took it to Royal, November 2024, they told me they could not figure out what was wrong with it. They said the repairs would be $2000 to $4000, and would be more than the value of the car. Essentially, they told me to come get my car, and just send it to the junkyard for parts. I was heartbroken. This car only has 72,000 miles on it, and is in great shape cosmetically. There was no way I was giving up on her. Enter LaVere's! I did a search for "VW mechanics" in the Bay Area, and Gary's shop came up. I had the car towed there, and had him run some tests. I was honestly expecting to hear bad news. But, instead, I got a call from Gary with the report that he had not only fixed it, but it was only $300! I could not believe it, and was even a bit skeptical. But sure enough, on New Year's Eve, we took the BART to Concord, where Gary himself picked us up. He drove us to his shop, which is a really neat, old school space, with lots of cool vintage VW's everywhere. Hallelujah! I was reunited with my bug, and ended what was a tough year on a high note. He explained that they saw that one of the main manifolds (or whatever you call it) needed to be bolted down properly. Simple fix. HUGE results. Mucho gratitude. It's been a month, and I have been driving the car with no problems...she runs great! Zippy as ever. I'm super grateful to Gary and his team for giving her new life. my experience with lavere's was one of the worst i've had in years as a customer in any capacity. what gary presented and who he actually turned out to be were completely different (in my experience). i found gary to be questionable in his "honesty", they took *nine*weeks* to complete the work, and when it was all said and done, gary (in my experience) proved himself to completely lack any shred of professionalism and really did not seem to care at all about me as a customer or my car but instead just himself. he was difficult, quite defensive and generally unpleasant. i read gary's response to another post where he states he does not speak to his customers in a rude manner, i found that to be a completely false statement. gary was *so* rude and used all kinds of choice words. i will close by saying i believe the work that was done was solid (though gary quoted me one price of $1,600 and then charged me $2,200 (defending it by telling me it had something to do with his distributor sending him the wrong part five separate times). read more

The frequency of these complaints suggests a pattern, likely just the tip of the iceberg of dissatisfied customers. In my dealing with him I feel he has major integrity issues. This apparent lack of integrity raises a significant question for potential patrons: do you want to patronize an establishment with an owner who repeatedly puts his own interests before those of his clientele? There are plenty of reputable repair shops available in the East Bay. Why take a chance with a business that has a clear history of customer dissatisfaction stemming from the owner's actions? I know this and all the other negative reviews will not and have not changed Gary's behavior but I do hope it might save you from posting your negative review in the future. I called to schedule an oil change for a 2008 Audi, spoke to the owner, Gary, on the phone. He scheduled it for the following Tuesday, no problem, as it wasn't an emergency. So, I waited over a week to bring it in. I felt confident, as I've had good experiences with reputable mechanics in the past who came recommended. First impressions when I dropped it off on Tuesday 2/22 morning - I don't care about your politics, honestly, I just wanted honest reputable service. Owner introduced himself (wearing a "MAGA" hat) and the manager, Jason. I really thought these guys had my back for a simple oil change. Jason passed the job off to one of his mechanics. I was offered the option to wait, but as I needed to leave since my toddler and her dad were waiting for me, I said it was no hurry and I would return in the afternoon. I called to let them know I was coming, spoke to Gary, since I had not received an "all ready" courtesy phone call - odd, since I was told that was their procedure. When we arrived, the passenger window was rolled down and the interior had been rained on. Unbelievable. Jason was apologetic and wiped it down. Ok, I was upset at the lack of care, but surely the job was done correctly, right? WRONG! This morning I noticed a puddle underneath the car. OIL. From a car that was perfectly fine when we dropped it off the previous day. Lovely. Called them up to bring it in. Fine. My partner drove it back to the shop - thanks for the time waster, guys! He had to watch as the mechanic went back and saw that they didn't put the oil filter on correctly. There was no oil left. It lost more than 6 quarts of oil in 10 miles. Oh, and to top it off, the owner said my partner could take off his mask in the shop, so he replied, "no thanks - I have an unvaccinated child at home." The owner, Gary, replied, "I am an unvaccinated child! HARHARHAR" Thankfully, they swapped it, cleaned the oil, filled it, and put it back together. More apologies. And a free quart of $10 oil. That's why this review is 3 stars. I could have done a better job watching a YouTube video and replacing the oil and filter myself. This was my first time bringing my car to Laveres and I have now found a repair shop , who I know are honest and provide excellent service . The back story is another repair shop quoted me almost $1,700 to replace both the purge valve and Evap Canister for my VW Jetta due to small leaks detected from a diagnostic test . I declined the repairs and came across the excellent reviews about Laveres on Yelp . I spoke with Gary before taking the car to his Shop for a second opinion and he informed me that an estimate of $1,700 for this type of repair seemed extremely high for the work involved. After bringing in the car to Laveres , and after running their own diagnostics and tests ,Gary and his team found no issues and the most likely cause was a false positive check engine light . I am so grateful to have found such an honest shop and mechanic and from now will be bringing both of my vehicles to Laveres for service . That bad service ever I had. if you need change oil, rotate tires or randomly replace the part that "looks like broken" -- use this service. I came here with my Golf TDI about the DPF issue. they replaced EGR valve and charged me $1300. the issue came back in a week. I came there 2nd time, and they replaced the rubber pipe for $700. coming back to home, my car stopped and the engine did not start. AAA bring the car back tho them. in 2 weeks they was "out of ideas", and replaced the O2 sensor and fuel filter for $500 -- and by car is not starting. So I can't set negative value, but $2500 and 3 weeks for a completely broken car is more than enough. Worst service ever I had. I'd like to set a negative value, but I can't. read more

They had our '72 beetle for over a month "working" on it. That should have been red flag number 1. Picked up to realize there were still issues with it. The mechanic heard the sound but didn't think it was anything. Yeah, it was something. Red flag number 2. Did some interior restoration on the vehicle, so it mostly sat, but we regularly turned it on, etc. Recently took it in for a tune up with all the interior work done, only to learn there is a ton of work that is needed on it still. And in fact looks like there was never any work done on the car. Spent thousands of dollars for them to hold onto it for over a month and turns out they didn't do anything to it. read more

Sent my 1964 Volkswagen Thing in to get the exterior headlights checked. The mechanic Jason noticed the headlight worked "fine" but also that you need to jiggle the switch a bit sometimes. Wish they would have fixed the issue with FRONT HEADLIGHTS. Not sure why but they decided to check the interior lights & replace a tiny dash light for $160.00. I never asked once for my interior lights to be looked at, checked or to see if they were are working. Crazy. Spoke to the owner Gary a month or so later explaining that I am unhappy and unsatisfied with the work that was done & that the front lights have same issues. Gary ensured me over the phone he would make it right & when I called back a few months later says it too late lol I think they could have handled this situation with better customer service. I have spent $8k+ with them but this situation put a sour taste in my mouth. If you take your car here be clear what you want then to work on or plan to pay for the things they decide to fix. My experience was like many others here. I drove my car in and it had to leave on a trailer. I should have listened to previous reviews. I would never let these guys touch any of my VW's. Even if it was minor basic engine work. After they broke my car, I could see they were ready to get loud and argue with me. I stand by my assessment of Jason. Honest, effective and responsible. An ASSET to any automotive repair shop. When Jason changed my spark plugs last year, I "WAITED" (you didn't have a problem with that then (AND THAT WAS DURING COVID-19). In fact, you weren't wearing a mask and proudly said to me that I could feel free to take my mask off because everyone in YOUR shop had had COVID! I felt so much better knowing that. Jason changed my spark plugs within 20 minutes of my arrival. Considering I made the appointment WITH YOU 3 (THREE) WEEKS IN ADVANCE AND FOR 9:00AM - WHEN YOU OPENED FOR BUSINESS (where you showed your first available time slot), when I arrived, you said that you don't cater to "wait" customers and you would call me when it was done. I decided to give you some leeway. What you actively did was to push the fluid change service out as far as you could so that, as you said, you could perform oil changes for other people. Really?!! Wasn't that why I was there???? An oil and brake fluid change??? After booking THREE WEEKS IN ADVANCE AND FOR THE TIME THAT YOU OPENED FOR BUSINESS!!?!! You took one look at this female and decided to manipulate the booking. As for the quote, I asked you for reconfirmation of the price for the fluid changes. That's when you said that you were planning on charging me $120 just for an oil change (the same as as the dealer down the road!). Hmm. When I asked you what you were planning to charge me for the brake fluid change, you said that you "didn't know"?!!!! But that the total shouldn't be too much over $300. Really? That is considerably more than the, "less than $200 out the door" quote that you gave me when I made the service appointment 3 WEEKS EARLIER. Now you're looking to shake me down for more $ because I'm a female?? I was willing to play the wait & see game, but when I arrived after 6 hours, you claimed that my car was next up - UNFORTUNATELY, the mechanic just stepped out for lunch! So, you force your employees to wait 6 hours for their lunch breaks???? WHAT WAS THE POINT IN YOU TAKING APPOINTMENTS SO FAR IN ADVANCE IF YOU DONT KNOW HOW TO MANAGE THEM??? As for asking all of your other employees for input, they were not involved but if it makes you feel better, then please, make yourself feel better. Not only was LaVere's a third of the cost but they were able to replace it within a day with genuine German auto parts. Stay away! Gary took advantage of me and it left a bad taste in my mouth. I'm just glad I got out of there without paying too much but I had to do a lot of research online and my own work on the car (I'm not very mechanically inclined and I drive an Audi A5). I needed to pass smog but had a check engine light. Gary charged me $110 to check the issue even though I gave him the error code from the smog place. He said, "It's the price to reset your code and give you a diagnostic". Gary was confident the code error was due to a battery swap so he told me "I'll reset your code and you just drive it for 50 miles because sometimes the customers just need to be the guinea pig. If it comes back on, I will reset your code as many times as you need for 90 days, that is my guarantee". After my check engine light came on again, I went to the internet to see how to fix my error code (was never a battery issue like Gary thought). I ordered some cleaner, did some wrenching on my car and took it back to Gary to reset my code to see if it was successful. This guy had the audacity to say, "you can't just come here to reset your check engine light anytime you want. This isn't and all you can eat." Mind you, a week before he told me it was no issue to reset my code for 90 days when he charged me $110. That didn't sit well with me - bad customer service. When he reset my code the 2nd time, I showed his mechanic and him how one of the valves wasn't connected and he should have let me know when he did the initial code check since he told me the $110 covered the code verification and a diagnostic. How did his team miss a valve not connected? The reset was covered and not charged and I was able to pass smog! No thanks to Gary and his team. I don't usually write bad reviews but this place is bad business. Take your money elsewhere or question him thoroughly. read more

What a hidden gem of a place. My two favorite takeaways from here were: ~Honest and friendly on the phone and in person. ~Not trying to sell something you do not need. My Dad is a lifelong mechanic and can always tell me what my car needs before I take it to a shop. (He lives too far away to help in person). Every time I take the car to other service centers, they tell me a whole story of problems my car has with huge price tags attached, I subsequently leave knowing the extensive work is not needed as my car has already been diagnosed by my mechanic dad. I took my 68 beetle here for a complete motor rebuild and it was running great. Unfortunately, the flywheel gland nut came loose and caused some internal bottom end damage. I immediately called Gary up and he instructed me to bring it in. Everything was under warranty and my bug was fixed with zero cost to me. Gary also let me borrow his beetle specific tow hitch for easier transportation. I have also always appreciated his calm demeanor and guidance. My wife and I recently purchased a 1979 Super Beetle convertible for her Birthday. We knew it would need some work so after shopping reviews we found LaVere's. They came very highly recommended so we chose them for a pre-purchase inspection. Working with a new shop or Mechanic is often nerve wracking. Our first point of contact was Jason, he handled our initial questions over the phone with kindness, courtesy and clearly stated knowledge. When I arrived with the bug for its initial inspection he lived up to his phone persona, while waiting and doing paperwork, I observed his interaction with a female customer with a VW bus. He was every bit as polite as he had been with me. He didn't talk down to her, did his best to offer helpful advice to her mechanical and restoration questions, even advised her on some simple DIY fixes. In short he treated her with the respect of one vw lover to another. I knew immediately that I needn't worry should my wife ever need to come get work done without me present. Our bug needed it's brakes done, rear drums replaced, EGG filter, and a general service. We were given a quote that seemed fair, and Gary, the owner, gave me some fantastic advice in negotiating the purchase of our bug. We got an amazing deal because of this advice. We purchased the bug for my wife, and scheduled the recommended service. On the day of the service I had the opportunity to get to know Gary a bit more, after complimenting him and his staff for being so helful, kind and ethical, he shared some of his life experiences that led him to his philosophy of how he runs his business. Kindness rules at LaVere's followed closely by in depth knowledge and a passion for all things VW and Audi. These guys love what they do and genuinely care about doing right by their customers. Our service was done quickly and thoroughly and best of all was done for less than the initial quote! They use only top end parts, selected for quality instead of an allegiance to any one parts manufacturer. You may find cheaper parts elsewhere but Gary and his staff are committed to offering only the best parts in any given category. I trust his judgment in his selection. As a restoration focused shop he chooses parts that are restoration quality and long lasting.
