WOW what a good find...friendly family run empanada cafe in a strip mall. 5 stars all around 5 star food: the empanadas were amazingly good...flaky crispy and chewy all at once. I'm a huge empanada fan, generally and these were among the best I've ever had. Spicy chicken, spinach and even Nutella ( with a Diet Coke LOL) were all terrific. 5 star service: the smiling woman at the counter was super friendly and we chatted a while about our mothers' cooking. While at the 62nd Street Plaza picking up my hen soup from the small Latin grocery store down the strip, I spotted this empanadas place. I wondered if they were Argentinian empanadas. Nailed it! Oh so good! It was mid afternoon and fortunately not very busy because they are prepared while you wait. You can also buy them frozen to heat & serve at home. I saw this spot after visiting Downtown Pizza Grill next door. I had high expectations but was disappointed with my visit. Although the location was spacious and clean, the service was lacking. The person behind the counter seemed bothered and unwelcoming, which was a bummer. The empanadas were small and not the best I've had. The guava and cheese lacked, add the guava flavor but it was incorporated and was just a slice of guava with melted cheese. The meat empanada is made with ground beef, it was only okay. Compared to other places, these were smaller and slightly burned. Sadly, I won't be returning. There are plenty of better options in Broward! Still, try them out. The guava and cheese had a thick slice of guava, the same guava you can buy at the grocery store that is completely granulated. Very odd texture. Wasn't melted enough & it was too thick - the empanada was burnt. The spicy beef was sweet. I guess it's the raisins, but I was looking for a spicy kick and didn't expect opposite. The ham and cheese was good. The spinach was loaded and probably my favorite. For the price I don't think it's worth it unless you're looking for a quick bite. The gentleman working had a few customers come in while I was waiting - could've been an off day, but he was cursing in the back extremely loud. We decided to check out this place after driving by dozens of times... We walked in and the guy behind the counter looked at us with a "not so friendly face". When we said we wanted to read the menu before deciding, he just walked away to the back of the store. Finally we came out again...we placed our order and asked if they could be heated so we could eat in ... He said....."You want them heated ??!?!!!".... Like we were asking for his first born... True Argentinian empanadas are big ... these were tiny.... We ate our empanadas and I found them salty and full of MSG. I had to go home quickly after.. the empanadas just went right through me.... I saw Lazo Empanadas when I was pulling up to one of my favorite spots to grabbing lunch. It is a pretty eclectic little spot that sells nothing but, as the name implies, empanadas. There was only one attendant I could see , and he was wearing a mask. There was also hand sanitizer for patrons to use. I was the only customer in, the attendant was very nice, he let me know they had packages and so I picked one of them. I got a Nutella/banana, guava and cheese They were good, the only thing I didn't care for as much was the burnt spots on top. As for my savory picks, I got: Chorizo (which I didn't know had egg in it) a spicy steak, steak and ground. They were out of chicken. Favor was great, but I couldn't tell them apart. They labeled them, but as far as texture and flavor, I didn't feel a big difference.. Overall though, i liked the concept, service and flavors. Was excited to try these empanadas because they are vegetarian which i feel is hard to find. I ordered two of the mushroom (based on the cashier recommendations) and one of the spinach. I found the pastry was over done (had too much of a burnt flavor) and the portions were pretty small for the price. Mushroom one was better than the spinach empanada. The only problem is that there was too much moisture left in the empanada so there was a lot of juice dripping out. The spinach was decent. Had a quick weekend getaway to Miami and really wanted to grab some empanadas. We walked into this very nice, clean establishment and the gentlemen behind the counter was wonderful. He explained the flavors and quantity orders. There were 3 of us and we wanted 3 orders of 3 that we would pay for separately and he suggested to just order the 9 pack and it would come out to less. He made sure to label all of the different flavors. They were still hot when we got back to our hotel room and all of the flavors were really good. We had the BBQ Chicken, Caprese Chicken, Steak, Steak Quesadilla and Ground Beef. All tasty and unique although the Ground Beef could have used some cheese The filling was seasoned so well and none of the flavors of the ingredients were overpowering. The crust was really good too! These are definitely not classic Argentinian empanadas, but they're super tasty! I highly recommend the steak quesadilla (very untraditional but so good). The empanada was very cheesy and flavorful. I'm pretty sure the owner was there when we went and he was so friendly and helped us with menu recommendations based off of what we like. I really liked this place. The guy that served us said that this is a family owned business. He was personable and helped us make up our minds with our selections. We each had 4.5 empanadas which was fun because we got to try several of the flavors. I liked the steak quesadilla, spicy ground beef, and the spinach/cheese one. Well... Let's face it, I like them all. I finished with a sweet empanada filled with Nutella and bananas. My husband let me try his guava filled one. both of those were great too. Found this gem while driving to a seminar I attend every Wednesday. Being vegetarian I was hesitant but I'm happy I took the plunge. They have about 3 different options.
