What a great place to stop and visit when you're in Grass Valley! I had come to town after a hike and obviously needed to rejuvenate myself with chocolate! What a delight. Walls and walls and walls of homemade chocolates. Three or four shelves of a variety of black licorice, my absolute favorite. And three ice cream freezers. One for Italian ices, one for gelatos and one for standard ice cream. Staff waa super friendly and helpful, guiding us through all of the choices. My hiking companion and I ordered a whole bunch of black licorice, one of our favorites. He then got two scoops of the chocolate ice cream, and I got two scoops of gelato: hazelnut and salted caramel. The ice creams and gelatos were delicious. And the assortment of black licorice was amazing. We brought home a quarter of a pound, and quickly gobbled it up when we got home. If you're in town and in need of replenishing some calories, I highly suggest you stop into this delightful shop with the greatest servers ever. read more

Visited August 19th..see both receipts from today. I love this place on Mill Street in Grass Valley! I have been coming here for years and they have kept their charm! They have delicious candy and chocolates and so much more! Love the selection of gummy and ice cream along with gelato. If you like jelly beans you will find them here! My friend got a huge single scoop of mint chocolate chip ice cream and I got an assortment of dark chocolates. Their chocolates are creamy and decadent ! This is an adorable shop! Before our trip we were told by a friend that we HAD to stop in and visit Lazy Dog. They have a great selection of handcrafted and packaged candies. As well as gelato and ice cream. We had just had lunch, so ice cream was out of the question, but we did choose a few selections of chocolates to enjoy later in the day. This is a really cute spot in a tiny town. When you walk in, you're immediately transported to a place where Willy Wonka EXPLODED. We spent 24 hours on an overnight trip and went twice to Lazy Dog Chocolateria. Our evening ended with the pleasure of picking out some dark chocolates while my husband picked out black licorice from their broad selection. The wait staff was great. I don't know if I'm just used to the high prices of the Bay Area but the chocolate here is CHEAP! We ordered three pieces and when we heard the total scrambled to get a bunch more, the fudge melts and lemon creams were especially delicious! We stuck with chocolate this time but there is also a million different types of candies including saltwater taffy. This place also has tonsss of ice cream flavors including sherbets and gelatos, and they also provide different prepared options like ice cream bars and sandwiches too! If you order a bar they give you a little to go bowl to carry it with for spillage, very cute! I'll be stopping by whenever I can going forward, thankfully they're open late too! read more

Typically when it comes to candy out of glass bowls/jars, they tend to be stale and taste old... wasn't the case all of the different gummies we got. I ended up purchasing a half pound of milk and dark honeycomb chocolate, a quarter pound of hostess mints, one of their fancy truffles, some vanilla dipped dog bones for Oslo and a black raspberry ice cream bar dipped in dark chocolate. Everything was delicious and Oslo loved the little dog bones we got for him. The honeycomb candy was tasty, but I wanted it to be like sponge candy from Buffalo, NY (which is similar, but Sponge candy is fluffier). It's easy to get carried away in a place like this, so get ready to splurge or come in knowing what you're going to get or how much you're looking to spend. The staff is so sweet and helpful as well. If you're purchasing items as gifts they'll offer to pack them in cute bags, but it does make it tough to sneak a piece or two to sample. When I get overwhelmed by choice I pick the first that looks fantastic. For me it was their handmade drumstick. It came in 4 flavors vanilla, chocolate, mocha almond and salted caramel. I chose the salted caramel. It was huge. I never intend on eating the whole as it was half as big as my head. . Super chocolatety shell, great ice cream. I ate as far as I could.
