Reservations required via the OpenTable app. For an even $20, guests are provided a 3 course fixed menu. 3 appetizer options, 3 entree options, and 3 dessert options. With rotating cuisines, this particular week catered to Italian fare. My choices were the shrimp bruschetta, poached sole & panna cotta. Shrimp bruschetta- A large shrimp on top of bruschetta, placed squarely in a plate of fennel broth. The broth was an interesting take, as the bruschetta soaked it up & became slightly mushy/slightly crusty. Poached sole- A large fillet of sole, paired with carrots, asparagus and fennel. I could taste the sole was previously frozen, as I've caught & cooked sole, which is a fatty & flavorful fish. The fillet could've used more sauce. Panna cotta- A winner! The pulled sugar was fun to eat, providing a contrast in texture to the creamy panna cotta. Service was excellent. Located at Building V, parking is $2/all day at the adjacent structure on Clark & Carson. For a fair amount of a jaunt, free parking can be had at LBX. Wanna feel like a judge on Hell's Kitchen? Second time dining at LBCC and such a treat! I organized a private luncheon at LBCC. They offered us a great menu! The students prepare and serve the food! The dining area is beautiful.and spacious with wall of windows to watch the activity in the kitchen. In addition, there is a large screen monitor to view activity. Fun to watch the dishes prepared before they come out! For $25 (before tax and tip), you appetizer/salad, main dishes, dessert, and beverages! High quality gourmet meal artistically plated! We all.loved our meals and the exceptional service! We were served New Potato Salad, Yougurt Chicken or Garden Pasta, and Apple Tartin for dessert! All dishes were so tasty and elegantly prepared. The New Potato Salad was amazing! I definitely could have eaten an entire bowl it was so good! I love that the menu included the names of the students preparing (by dish) in the kitchen and serving in the dining area! Reservations are required! No walk-ins. Reservations are available thru Open Table 3 weeks out. They are only open for lunch, Tuesdays and Wednesdays for about 10 weeks each semester. I'm so happy I was able to snag a reservation as I've always wanted to try LBCC Bistro! I felt like a Top Chef judge in restaurant wars haha. Parking was the most challenging thing for me but once I found the parking structure off Clark I was fine. It cost $2 for the whole day and you prepay with a QR code located near the stairwells/elevator's. Once you exit the parking structure walk towards Carson and the bistro and bakery are right on the corner. The food was delicious and today was Italian day! The crostini and cheese arancini were delicious! We bother ordered the Salmon with Salmoriglio sauce. The desserts were delicious as I love tiramisu. I didn't get to try the cannoli since but was told they were very good. Service was at a good pace and we didn't wait too long for anything and we were checked in on several times. The interior was welcoming and casual with some nice background music. It was nice to watch the prep in the kitchen on the TVs as well. If you can get in, the best lunch you will eat for the price in Long Beach. Ever since my wife forwarded me an article about the Long Beach Community College's culinary program having a restaurant open to the public, serving meals prepared by students, I've been wanting to go. I knew it was only open for lunch on Tuesday and Wednesdays (from 11:30 - 1:30), and took mandatory reservations via email. Well...we couldn't make it last semester, so as soon as the new fall semester started, I tried for a new reservation. That's when I was told that OpenTable was now being used to take reservations, and after some trial and error, realized that they only take reservations 2 weeks in advance and they fill up quickly. So exactly two weeks ago, I placed a reservation for 4 people (two of them being long time LBC residents) at 11:30 on a Tuesday. Per OpenTable, I got reminder emails that had the address of the restaurant...unfortunately, it was the generic address for Long Beach College. Instead, one should use the exact address on Yelp for LBCC Bistro which will get you to the right side of Carson Street (southside). You would need to park in the large parking garage south and walk back north to the small building that houses the cafe and bakery. Parking is confusing...it's clear that the residential streets in the area are to be only used for residents...and parking in the garage had signs stating that it was only for faculty and students. But we saw no other choice and it worked out OK. (It looks like in the past, the garage was paid parking, but it was free when we came in). There are signs indicating where to check-in. After finding our name in the printed out reservation list, we were escorted to a table for four. The space is very modern and clinical, with plenty of space between seating....reminded me of a college cafeteria. There are also 3 large monitors displaying real-time actions of the culinary students in the open kitchen (you can see when your food is being prepared). Our server (Sage) greeted us warmly, gave us ice water and directed us to the paper menus. The menus change frequently, and this week's theme was Italian. Between the four of us, we were able to order everything off the menu. I got to sample all of it. Stuffed calamari salad - first time seeing this on any menu. I love squid, but if prepared incorrectly can be rubbery (at best) or just dirty (if not cleaned properly). This rendition was excellent: a baby whole squid, cleaned and stuffed with a rice/mushroom mixture. It came with endives and dressed arugula. I would eat this dish over and over again if I could. Aracini - a risotto ball, served over an excellent marinara sauce. I'm not a fan of risotto, but this preparation was really good and very filling. Chicken Cacciatore (spelled 'cacitorie' on the menu which I think is a typo) - my wife liked this dish. It used chicken tender loins, served over al dente spaghetti, with the same homemade marinara sauce. Sea Bass - A very small filet of bass, accompanied by orzo, asparagus. Eggplant Parmigiana - might be the first time I liked eggplant. It was three eggplant cutlets, expertly breaded and deep fried, topped with melted fresh mozzarella and marinara sauce. It came with a side of carrots. Cannoli - two cannoli, one stuffed with chocolate mousse and the other being the traditional vanilla ricotta with mascarpone. Loved this too...the pastry was crunchy and sweet and the filling on both were very good. Tiramisu - I thought this was a showstopper dessert. It was layered in a martini glass, and looked beautiful. It had six distinct layers, with liberal use of cocoa powder. The flavors played off each other so well...would have been great with a little dark rum (no alcohol is served at the bistro), but the coffee extract was just fine (there is espresso available for $4 and I'm thinking it is probably excellent considering how good this dessert was). The fixed prie was $20 per person, including tax. Payment was powered by Toast. There was no place on the credit card receipt for a tip amount, so thinking it wasn't expected. Yes, everything about this was tightly controlled, but this program wasn't meant to train students in the hospitality sector where solving unexpected dilemmas is part of the training, but instead was meant to train chefs who would work in a real kitchen out of school, and hopefully dream and fulfill their desires to open their own place. And hopefully by getting real experience various cuisines, they would learn what cuisines they were most interested in (or just very good at), and focus on those in their career. Usually when leaving a restaurant thinking "Dang, the food was good. But how are they turning a profit at these prices? Are they going to be able to stay open?"...I feel disheartened. But for this experience, we all felt proud that our community has something like this...and that the students are being taught so well. read more

Three of us had reserved a table online for their prix fixe luncheon (offered Tuesdays and Wednesdays 11:30-1pm during the school year). The culinary students prepare and serve the dishes in the little Bistro restaurant. The kitchen is visible along one wall and you can also watch the "chefs" cooking on the tv monitors in the dining room. We were thrilled that it was the Italian menu this week, and ordered all the items to share. (The menu changes every few weeks, and it may be Asian, Mexican, American, etc. ) The servers were friendly and professional, and they timed the arrival of each course well. Our warm bruschetta appetizer was very flavorful though tiny. The fresh basil and cheese with the little roasted tomatoes packed a punch of salty flavor. The Arancini was well prepared- they are not easy to do well. The marinara sauce was a bit too salty but still complemented the blander, starchy rice ball. We would have liked more peas, but it was a rich, filling appetizer overall. The vegetarian gnocchi dish was actually the star- very herbaceous, flavorful sauce. The gnocchi dough (also not easy to do well) was a little thick but well prepared with a good chew; the vegetables added a lot of flavor and texture. The chicken piccata, though tasty, could have used a little lemon and more capers. The chicken meat was not very seared so was a little chewy, and the sauce was invisible under the pasta so we missed it when taking the first bites. The pasta was perfectly al dente, and when mixed with the sauce was tasty. The salmon was cooked perfectly, moist inside and well seared outside. Pasta and asparagus were al dente. The desserts were delightful. Tiramisu was served as a parfait, creamy and beautiful. The little cannoli - one chocolate, one regular were crisp and tasty. The pastry cream filling was smooth, we could have eaten a bowl of just that! We each ordered an espresso to enjoy with the desserts. Overall, a very good meal, with lovely presentation, delicious flavors and portions not too big or small. $20 a person + drinks and tip, you can't beat it! Their bakery is also a delight, though it closed at 1pm and were sold out of most items by the time we arrived at the restaurant. My daughter scored a Caprese sandwich though to eat later! Parking is available in the campus garage for $2 all day. We hooked up our Prius as well and got some electric charging for $1.50 while we dined. We'll be back next semester! read more

My first time checking this place out and it was delicious. It's a prix fixe menu for $20 (please don't forget to leave a gratuity!) and includes an appetizer, entree and dessert. If you go to the website they tell you to email for reservations but you can go to OpenTable now. Previously they only took cash but now take credit cards. No alcohol but offer coffee and water choices. BTW the affiliated bakery next door is busy with savory and sweet offerings plus Baquettes. My bad I forgot to take pics of their bakery offerings! The pappas rellenos were crispy on the outside and warm inside. Not a super flavorful dish to begin withper se but exquisite presentation. The salmon was exquisite though with a crisp skin that was light. The accompanying vegetables were nicely done and again kudos to the presentation! The Picarones were very good. The light sauce was sweet but not overwhelming. I'm not a dessert person per se but I polished them off. I tried the Chocoflan but more like chocotapico to me. Service was outstanding. Such a hidden local jam! This is my first time dining with LBCC Bistro. They're not only delish, friendly and great service. We had the prix fixe menu for $20 for the French cuisine today: Baked brie with cranberries, Pumpkin bisque, Salmon in caper cream sauce (cook, seasoned & seared perfectly), Beef Bourguignon (with rich red wine sauce), Crepe and Apple tartin for dessert along with a refreshing basil lemonade. Menu switch out every week. Each 2 weeks falls within same cuisine but different menu items. This is quite a treat. The dining student team works hard and checks on you constantly. I recommend the open table mobile app, as I had trouble getting availability on browser version. They are open on Tues/Wed for lunch timing, the reservations fill up fast. I went to the location for the first time after hearing about it from my sister. I accidently parked a bit away because apple maps was not accurate enough. I would recommend google maps to check actual location. The food looked good, plated quite beautifully, tasted pretty good to okay. The price is great, usually the 3-course meal are falls around $20. The service was friendly, though some parts did seem awkward. The server was not able to correctly remember my order first time, but was able to correct it when reconfirming the order with me. It is very great service and they have tvs that display what's going on live in the kitchen. It's very cool being able to see the student chefs cook the food in real time. The menu changes weekly and it seems almost exclusive eating there because reservations are so limited. The roasted pork belly was absolutely divine. I wish I could come back just for that! The lava cake was also soooo delicious with the raspberry sauce and dragon fruit slice. This was a new and interesting experience for me. My friend was finally able to get us a reservation because they are booked out so far in advance. The menu is switched out weekly so you technically don't know what they're serving until the week of your reservation. I think this is cool because you get to try out new cuisines. This week's theme was Asian Culinary. My favorite dish was the appetizer and dessert: Roasted Pork Belly/ Asian Spiced Lava Cake. The entree was interesting and I felt like it was missing a little something. While you're waiting for your food, there are multiple TVs set up so you are able to see your food cooking in action! More notably, they give you a little survey at the end so you can give helpful feedback on things they may need to improve on for the following day. I stumbled upon this student-run restaurant while browsing yelp reviews and decided to give them a try. It's located on the Long Beach City College campus in Building V. Parking can be found in the structure next to Building V for $2 for the day (it is rigorously enforced so make sure you get a parking ticket at a nearby machine). It's best to make a reservation for the Bistro by emailing them via their website but some days - as in the day I visited - a reservation clearly wasn't necessary. They are only open a couple days a week and only for lunch while school is in session. As this is training ground for culinary students in operating a restaurant, the students in the kitchen and serving will vary daily so your experience will be dependent on who is there on a given day. Same with the menu - it constantly changes so it's advised to get on their mailing list for weekly menus. I was promptly seated when I arrived. The interior is cafeteria-like with nicely set tables, one wall being a huge window looking into the kitchen. My server was attentive throughout my meal and, although he was pleasant and efficient, was still working on social interaction skills. There are two choices for appetizer, entree, and dessert. Flat fee is $15 which is an incredible bargain. I chose, as an appetizer, yuca tamales. For entree I chose lamb chops with churros as dessert. The tamales consisted of yuca, queso fresco and scallions served on corn husks. Absolutely delicious. The lamb chops were cooked perfectly and were tender with mild flavor and the mole sauce gave a nice taste accent. The rice pilaf, spinach and mushrooms served with it were all wonderfully done. Two churros with a ganache were my dessert. The churros were crisp and sweet on the outside but a bit too doughy on the inside. The chocolate ganache was fantastic for dipping (but the menu labeled it as "spicy" which it wasn't...which was great for me since I don't care for spicy chocolate). The horchata I had to drink was not so great, lacking any cinnamon flavor and mostly just tasting "milky". An iced tea turned out to be a much better choice. This was a superb meal especially considering the cost. My critiques are minor and I definitely plan return visits and encourage other yelpers to gamble and give them a try. read more

Prior to having lunch at the Bistro, I bought some baked goods from the bakery. I ordered the fruit tart and spinach and egg quiches. Both of these baked goods are one of the best pastries I've had! Visited LBCC Bistro on a Wednesday afternoon with two friends. Make sure to call ahead of time to see if reservations are needed. The host, servers, and staff were professional, very friendly, and provided excellent service! It was apparent that the staff very much loved and enjoyed working there, which makes me happy to spend my money to support an excellent program that enables students to learn and practice what they love! Monitors are placed on corners of the restaurant, so visitors can watch the chefs cook and prepare the meals, which was so cool! The menu for the day was Mexican, so I ordered the Potato Dorados as an appetizer, fish of the day, and the chocolate cake. The potato dorados were a perfect portion size, seasoned well, and left me wanting more! The fish of the day was also delicious and the cake was yummy! I always love to try college restaurant's food that the students prepare and serve. This place was no exception. We all have to start somewhere and this is a great opportunity both for students young and old to prepare some amazing dishes to help set the stage for the chefs of tomorrow. I was introduced to the college bistro by my good friend and was not disappointed. The menu was fairly limited, as the restaurant is just starting to get into the groove. I started my meal off with a uniquely different potato salad with artichoke hearts and kalamata olives. There was a light dressing added to the mix, which created a very balanced and delicious salad. Next up was the sea bass. We were trying to decide on where the sea bass is from, Chile or local. We still aren't sure but will try and find that out down the road. Nonetheless the sea bass was moist and tender with a light buttery flakiness. The fish was accompanied by asparagus, basmati dill rice and a lemon caper sauce. Very tasty!! For dessert was an almond cake with baked apples and a spoon taste of ice cream. The reduction sauce was pretty much dried into the plate, so it was tough to get the flavor of the sauce. I look forward to going back and trying a few more special lunch time meals. They are only open on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 11:30-1:30 and the total price is $15. Quite a deal!! After hearing about this place from my friends, I thought it was time for me to give it a try. This is a small Bistro that serves only lunch. It is run by the students, so its only open a couple days (Tuesday and Wednesday) of the week and for only a few weeks every semester. I love that it is a culinary school, as they are trying different things all the time and its fun to talk to the students about the school. They have TVs in the restaurant so that you can actually watch your food being made. We called to make a reservation about 4 times and to get a confirmation and left a voicemail each time, however, they never called us back. We still drove up hoping they got the voicemail and just put us down. Fortunately, they had a few empty tables and they were able to seat us as soon as we arrived. The waiter/student asked me if I wanted the specialty Moroccan tea that was sweetened with simple syrup. It was delicious, not too sweet and spiced just right. We were seated next to the window where you can look in to see the students prepare the courses. The lunch consists of 3 courses and its only $15. It's a great deal for the quality of food you get. We started with the Shrimp Brushetta for an appetizer. Two shrimp come on a thin slice of bread...however, it was a bit soggy as it is sitting in a fennel broth. I think the bread should be toasted as it would also enhance the flavor. The broth is flavorful and we were not sure if it was suppose to be hot or cold....as it was served at room temperature. I loved the pickled golden beet and wish there were a few more of them. We then both had the 5-spice lamb chop for our entrée. It was served on delicious garlic mashed potatoes with a red reduction sauce. The lamb was overcooked for me but had a lot of flavor and was tender. It also came with 1 brocollini that was dry and undercooked. But the presentation was very nice. We then had the apple crisp with vanilla ice cream for dessert. It was very good. They use granny smith apples which are my favorite for baking. I asked for a cup of coffee and they brought me out a fresh cup of coffee...however, it needed to be hotter. They served the coffee with cream and sugar and I was able to get a refill. This was all included in the price! The place is clean and the waiters are friendly. There is a bakery next to the dining room, but, unfortunately all the pastries were sold out! I've been told they are very good, especially the croissants. My suggestion is that they serve a croissant to each guest with the lunch. Even if they had to raise the price to $16, it would be worth it. It would make the meal more satisfying and filling. We were lucky to get in this time for lunch as they will now be closed until sometime late February. I will have to wait now until then to try a croissant....but, I will definitely be back. read more

Nestled in the northeast corner of the V Building at LBCC, the Bistro is a student run restaurant that offers fresh, fantastic tasting, and artistically presented food that you would normally only find in a fine dining restaurant, but you get it hear for a fast food price. Normally a for course meal costs you only $15! -- The Longer Version -- Context: the Bistro is a learning laboratory for students enrolled in the LBCC Culinary Arts program. Since it is a classroom, it is always a work in progress. This is most readily apparent on the front end of its operation -- the hosting, order taking, drink refilling and busing food and other items. So, you have to keep that in mind: these are students working here and they have a lot to practice and learn to perfect their craft. Although most may want to just become great chefs, the Bistro is a practicum class where we--the diners--get to participate in their learning experience so that they may learn to manage every aspect of restaurant operations. The students are all well intentioned, but all have different levels of social skills and other experience, and it doesn't always go smoothly. It can be an especially nerve wracking experience for to learn everything and develop the skills and finesse to juggle all of the different duties and responsibilities necessary for success--and to do so while maintaining a smiling, pleasant and helpful demeanor. Please be patient, and if things aren't meeting your expectations, please offer them constructive and helpful feedback! Hours of operation: currently open for lunch (11:30am-1:30pm) on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, during the fall and spring semesters (September-November, and late February to mid-May). Price: Usually $15 gets you a drink, an appetizer, main course, and desert! Once or twice a semester they switch that up and you might get a simpler meal for a little less, or a tasting or family style type meal for the same $15 price. Ingredients: herbs are grown fresh in a garden adjacent to the V building, and all other ingredients are fresh and sourced locally, if possible. Almost everything is made from scratch. Presentation: food is usually very well plated and presented like you would expect if you were dining out at a fancy restaurant and spending $$$. Taste: the quality of the ingredients used, and the preparation and care taken in preparing it by the chef's-in-training, using state of the art, professional grade restaurant equipment and tools, make for a great tasting meal and experience. It's not just a meal, but also an experience that should be savored, best experienced by taking it all in slowly. Menu: changes every week, but usually a common theme--like Mediterranean cuisine--is kept for two weeks. Because of this, sometimes an appetizer, main course and/or desert item will carry over to another week, but you can't count on it. In the almost year and a half that the Bistro has now been open, it seems some menu items can make a comeback. The chocoflan, chicken molé and hibiscus tea I enjoyed today (11/15/2106) was first feature almost exactly a year ago. The dishes featured come from around the world has ranged from American Southern food, to Mexican, to Asian various Asian dishes (Korean, Vietnamese, Chinese, Thai), Spanish, and Mediterranean. Can Anyone Eat Here? if you have the time, and at least $15, or a friend who will pay for you :), then yeah. You don't have to be a student, staff or faculty member. Reservations: are highly recommended to guarantee you a spot, because availability is limited. That is so key if you are not normally on campus. If you email them at bistro@lbcc.edu then you can ask to be put on their email list, and they will email you each week that the bistro is open to let you know what that weeks menu will be. You can also schedule a one-time or reoccurring reservation via email if you contact them in advance. Parking: if you are not an LBCC student or employee with a parking permit, on campus parking is $2 a day, for student parking spaces only --you cannot park in parking spots marked "staff". The nearest lot is the multistory structure just to the south and across from the V building. There are machines that sell day permits inside and adjacent to the parking structure. Better yet, find a free street parking spot across the street around the public park, and take a short stroll to whet your appetite a little more. Conclusion: Don't let the limited hours of operation, or a slight parking inconvenience stop you from visiting and enjoying what is sure to be one of the highlights of your week! This is a hidden gem I am sure for most who do not live, attend or know of somebody who has been here to enjoy lunch. For you see, this is on the campus of Long Beach City College in their Culinary building. My girlfriend suggested it from hearing great comments from somebody she knew who had been and thoroughly enjoyed it! The food is prepared by upcoming chefs in the Culinary program in three courses. Each course is presented in such a way as if you were in a high-end restaurant. With that, know the portions are on the small side, but very satisfying. From reading the website, each week is a different type of food. For example our week was Mediterranean. The first course choices were Lamb Kabobs or a Mediterranean salad. Second course was a meat dish, seafood and a choice for vegetarians which is nice to cover all their basis and lastly, dessert which for our meal there was only one choice and it was very tasty. Walk-ins are welcome, but with our rather large party we made reservations. The website encourages reservations although, the day we were there tables were empty. Also check the website for hours because I believe they are only open for lunch and certain months within the year. The price for our three courses, unlimited ice tea which was a mint tea/cinnamon tea was $15 plus an additional tip. I am not one for spending that kind of money on lunch for just me, but to experience this it was worth it. Yes, I would come again and this time take my hubby so he can experience it as well. The servers are students as well and they do a fine job. I didn't see the pastry counter when you first walk in, but apparently everything looks scrumptious and once again made my the student chefs. I will have to check it out and purchase something next time since I work at a place that makes pastries. Would love to compare :). The building is a wide open seating arrangement with the view of Carson one way and the other, the grounds of the college. Not to bad while you enjoy eating and talking. Oh yes, I did ask for my salad to be dry with dressing on the side. They were able to accommodate me so I suppose some special requests are available. However not sure about the main course food?? It was really cool because at the end all the student chefs came out, we clapped for them and had our picture taken with them and gave a couple comments on their food. This place deserves more than 5 stars! The love and effort that the students put in this bistro definitely shows on the food! All the pastries, paninis and beverages they make are delicious and fresh! I think because the students are learning and are passionate for baking and cooking, the food tastes better than other places. Try their apple tart! So delicious! The food is amazing!! They have a different prefixed menu every week. I dined in on the South/Latin American week and had the roasted pork in adobo; thinly sliced pork butt with green beans and yucca. Chicken tamale with mango chutney for appetizer and an amazing chocoflan for dessert. The service is also very friendly. The only con about this place is that it's only open Tuesdays and Wednesdays 10:30am-1:30pm, and a reservation is needed in advance. read more

This location has a bistro and a bakery, both with very limited hours. I can only review the bakery but, boy, do they do a great job!!! I always get the ham and cheese croissant. It has that yummy cheese crust oozing out. The strawberry croissant is also fantastic filled with custard. The chocolate macaroon was so very soft and goooood! I haven't tried much more yet because they are very limited on the hours they are open. However, I will be back and definitely hope to try the bistro! read more

You must reserve by e-mail (not phone) and on the day before you want to go.
