Le Canard Enchaîné** is one of our absolute favorite restaurants. It's our go-to place for anniversaries, birthdays, and sometimes just because we feel like treating ourselves. Every visit has been consistently outstanding. The food is simply exceptional. We've tried many dishes over the years, and honestly, everything on the menu has been delicious. You can truly appreciate the quality of the ingredients and the attention to detail in every plate. The service is equally impressive--friendly, professional, and always attentive, making every meal feel special. They don't offer a kids' menu, but that has never been an issue for us because our daughter has a very French palate and happily enjoys the regular menu. If you're planning to visit, I highly recommend making a reservation for the weekend, as it tends to fill up quickly. Also, keep in mind that they're closed on **Wednesdays and Sundays**. We went here for my wife's birthday on a trip to NY state and really enjoyed it. The layout is a bit odd but the staff are very welcoming and helpful. Sevice in general was a high point. The food was also very good. We shared Oysters which were a bit expensive at $4 each. I had the Pile Fish which was delicious and delicate in a nice understated sauce. Very French. Smooth seating and welcoming staff! First of all, the bread and butter were amazing -- had 3 baskets and I still want more. The CT east coast oysters were delicious and perfect in size and chew. We then ordered the escargot-- absolute perfection in garlic, olive oil and herbs. Soak all that up with the bread, of course! The goat cheese cake was a treat indeed-- drizzled in a honey balsamic, w crunchy walnuts, apple slices and greens. We went onto our entrees.... The lamb shank was delicious with the meat falling off the bones. The raisins and the tomatoes stood out in the sauce and never overwhelmed the meat. Well we're going top shelf folks up here in the hinterlands. With my son and two friends. This is a classic French restaurant with a beautiful panache Starting with kir royale, a traditional French aperitif with champagne and crème de cassis, served in the requisite flute glass and gin Beefeater Martini with the mandatory three olives. Well Ludi incipiant! Kathy is our waitress and she's a local and absolute riot!! "Don't be shy boys!" So it's soup a L'onion gratinee. Chicken liver pate and 1/2 dozen oysters. Then entrees two 1/2 ducks with a special request of red cabbage a veal cutlet over mashed potatoes white wine shiitake mushrooms. Went for a birthday dinner. Kind of a weird entrance during winter as some doors are shuttered and initially it looked closed. We found an entrance and were greeted by someone at the bar. Led us to a table away from main dining area (which was kind of weird) but service was prompt and friendly. We tried a lot of dishes and all were good: vegetable tower, oysters, branzino, lamb shank, pot du crème. Also had some cocktails. Nice interior minus the fake plastic foliage everywhere. Went for my second visit and wasn't disappointed. I got a bit tipsy on a bottle of red and didn't even realize they served me the wrong goat cheese salad until after I got home. I suppose that's a testament to how good the food is right there; anything they put in front of me is delicious. I definitely recommend the mushroom soup - wow. This place once had excellent food but changes in managment changed that. The service is still good as well as the atmosphere but the menu is limited and food less impressive. I got the rib eye steak that wasn't 16 oz as claimed, over cooked and with a great deal of grizzle served with fries that were unimpressive for $65. No veggies or anything else. I had a steak there 4 years ago that may have been the best I've ever had and that's why I decided I would do the steak. The $26 single crab cake appetizer was good, not impressive. As a resident of Kingston I have no desire to return. There are too many good restaurants in the area I can go to. read more

Le Canard's is a level above, with a more complex and delicious flavor profile, and noticeable taste of beautiful herbs. Really quite a soup. Even when busy, keep visiting your tables. Water refills, asking about meals, get table smiling, bring (after request) and pickup bill a little more promptly. I came here last April for a special birthday. When I arrived I was greeted with a smile and happy birthday wishes. Unfortunately after that, everyone was harried. Yes, it was a busy Saturday night, but the service was strange. It started with a weirdly friendly server. Then different servers came over thinking it was their table. We received our wine and then it took awhile to take our order. Very disorganized. Fortunately, the food was good. I ordered the duck and it was perfectly cooked. I ordered the sauce on the side, because I really wanted to taste the duck. I also ordered the escargot. Very nice, but needed a touch of salt. My husband was happy with his lamb and soup. The dessert was not great. The apple tart tasted a bit old and dry. My glass of wine was just ok. At the end our meal, yet another server plopped the check on our table. When we left, there weren't any goodbyes either. Would I come here again? Probably. I still gave it four stars. I enjoyed my duck so much. We dined here for the first time, and our waitress Morgan made it an exceptional experience. My wife had the lamb shank, which was delicious, and I had the 1/2 chicken, which was delicious, as well. The cabernet wine Morgan allowed us to sample, and we ordered it, as it was excellent in body and flavor. Again, service was outstanding, and the only reason for the 4 star food rating was due to the size of the portions. We undertand that French cuisine portions are often not what one would get if dining any other cuisine, but in America, we expect the portions to be adjusted to fit the price. I have been going to Le Canard-Enchaine since 2010, when a friend introduced me to it and Jean Jacques. The place is stellar, and if you visit Kingston, I recommend it for dinner. The quality is as good as or better than the better Manhattan bistros, but the prices are average. Having a place this good in Kingston is an important addition to Kingston's restaurant scene. I also live in NoHo, Manhattan, so I have comparison points, and I save my French dining for Le Canard-Enchaine. There aren't many comparable places in upstate New York, and it is more than competitive for Manhattan. Jean Jacques, who attended Le Cordon Bleu and is now running Le Shack in St. Philip, Barbados, is at once a fine pastry chef and a fine chef de cuisine. He created most of the recipes. The quality has remained high and stable since JJ moved to the Caribbean. Among the excellent dishes I have had there in the past year or two are the French onion soup, duck liver terrine, roast duck, confit of duck, crusted salmon, and trout amandine. There are ever-changing specials, which are always great. The desserts, especially the pastries, are phenomenal, so leave room. read more

Came here after a super long day, by myself. At first I was hesitant because I thought I was gonna be totally underdressed. I got a seat at the bar, the vibes were lit, and the staff was super friendly. I don't eat bread, or white vegetables and they totally accommodated substitutions. A memorable lunch in company with a dear friend. If my eyes had been shut, I would have sworn I was eating food in France. The service and meal were reminiscent of many bistro meals in Paris, Auvergne, Bayeaux, and elsewhere. I started with an endive salad, dressed with crumbles of bleu cheese and walnuts, a classic with the addition of a few slivered apple slices. My main: beef bourguignon. It matched the versions I've had many times before--thick rich sauce, beef and vegetables that were fork-tender and delicious. A glass of Bordeaux made a nice accompaniment. And for afters, another classic: tarte tatin. Absolutely delicious. This place deserves its many accolades. We were in the area looking for somewhere to eat and we came across this place here on Yelp. I'm glad we did. To start, we ordered the escargots special and the French onion soup. The soup was so good!!!! Anytime I go anywhere, I always have to try the onion soup and this was was phenomenal. The escargots were good. First time trying them, the dish felt a bit too oily in my opinion, but tasted great. We ordered the strip steak and the marinated mussels for our main courses. We were both happy with our choices. My steak was huge and cooked perfectly. The compound butter gave a nice touch of added flavor to the steak. We ordered some drinks, which all promptly arrived after ordering. My cocktail was delicious and perfectly made. Our server was attentive and never left our glasses empty. My only two comments are that this dinner cost over $100 per person which is pretty pricy in my opinion when each of us just had an appetizer, main course, and 2 drinks. But, it could be the norm for this area. I'm not very familiar with it. The second, there were three different silverware pieces that were placed on our table that had not been cleaned properly.
