My girlfriend and I decided to celebrate last night and we went back to La petite bistro and it reminded me on why I used to love it. It's very pretty inside but the food is too rich and upset my stomach a lot I had a sautéed fish with mashed potatoes and later that night had major stomach problems. And I know French food since I lived nine years in Paris.! If you want a pretty dining room with drinks go but IF you have any issues with Heavy food I don't recommend it! read more

We eat out about 3-4x a week and the best restaurants are always the ones (even at their worst) that would never leave a patron hungry. The "petit" portions and prices here are out of control and should be an embarrassment. As an example: The family next to us was a great example of starving children--first world edition. I was thinking about augmenting my salmon dish with another dish, just in case I got hungry, but when the crêpe arrived to the table next to us, the young boy looked disappointed. It was tiny and apparently they are not made fresh because when I asked they said they only had one more. How does one run out of crepes? Maybe no more bananas or Nutella? After he finished eating it, he was scraping every sign of Nutella drizzle from his plate, and then I heard him say what I think all of us were feeling. "Mom, I'm still hungry" with which his mom asked the server for something else, and meanwhile, my husband and I looked at each other and smirked in accord. Our dishes (shown) were about $18 each and we did leave dissatisfied and still hungry. The quality of the food was very good, but two shrimp tacos with barely anything inside them was literally shameful and shocking, and my husband who had low blood sugar was hoping this would help but it did nothing. The place is undoubtedly charming, the servers wonderful and accommodating, but the food on a Sunday brunch needs to be reviewed, and attention must be paid to the fact that brunches are usually the first meal of the day for many, and with that people expect something substantial to kick off the day until dinner. Add another taco. And don't let us ask for more bread or another meal for another $18. It doesn't fly. If you want a hearty brunch I suggest another restaurant. read more

Very disappointing dinner! We ordered the Moules Frites and the scallops. The moules frites was the most tasteless thing we've ever had and it's difficult to get this dish wrong. The fries were soggy - how can you not have crispy fries at a fancy $$$ restaurant ?? All the mussel dish needed was garlic and butter and a lot of lemon and it had none of those items. We had to get pepper, salt and lemon separately just to make the dish edible. The scallops were supposed to have a sauce au poivre and it had not a hint of that. Again, no pepper crust as promised and a very bland presentation of mashed potatoes with some spinach. Very, very disappointing. The servers were friendly enough and offered to get bread and then promptly forgot - all in all, I would skip this place because there are better places close by. read more

Service was hit or miss. I'm sure if we were regulars we would have had better service. The special linguine and clams was excellent however the scallops were over cooked, the mashed potatoes were over salted and the asparagus was a bit tough. Scallops were baby scallops which is fine but at that price point should have been larger. Dessert was excellent. Cocktails were on the small size, reasonable wine selection. Restaurant reviews on Yelp etc are really something, aren't they? I'm not into "toxic positivity" but, my goodness, a lot of amateur restaurant reviewers are savage and maybe need good therapists or something? We eat out a lot(have even been to Alinea twice) and really enjoyed everything about Le Petit Bistro! Ambiance and service terrific(and it was quite full so I think is a local favorite). Cocktails and French Onion soup were very good but the Steak at Poivre was incredible! It was large, cooked to perfection, flavorful and the sauce was delicious. This is definitely in our current Top 5 for Hudson Valley restaurants; we'll be back regularly. We love French food and don't expect Olive Garden portions. read more

Popped in after a movie across the street for a drink and a snack. Truly comfortable seats at the bar, friendly service, and generous pours of an excellent Lebanese wine, paired with fried oysters that had all the best components of your favorite sushi roll - cucumbers, tobiko and a creamy sauce. Loved! Steak tartare was fine - the meat was a little sinewy. Wines and apps reasonably priced - entrees are stratospheric. Small bites and drinks are probably the way to go! read more

This place was recommended to me by coworkers, and I had stopped by after a day at the spa. Food was ok. Shrimp scampi sauce was flavorful but I thought it would be made with pasta (my fault for assuming that it was a pasta dish I guess). My partners lamb ragu was ground instead of off a lamb shank - tasted like when we make ground beef with pasta from home. The restaurant five feet from my house had a better meat with pasta combo. HOWEVER, bone marrow was great. But it's disappointing to have good appetizers followed by mid entrees that all average around $30. I heard the raw oysters were great, maybe I should've gotten that? Service was average. Our waitress was friendly and came in a timely manner. The ambiance is nice. I'd only come back for the bar or appetizers. Although since I'm an hour from here I'd probably check out another restaurant if I come back to Rhinebeck. read more

This is a cute little restaurant. As we were only in town for the weekend, we'd been eyeing it since Friday evening. We finally made it to Sunday afternoon brunch. We were highly disappointed! I first ordered a spritz that was flat, no sparkle, no flavor....it actually tasted like Kool-Aid without sugar. I asked to replace with the Red Sangria, even worse. It was watered down, no hint of wine or fruit. Next I ordered the mussel frites.....very bland, no salt on the fries or in the white wine broth. My friend ordered the steak frites. The garlic butter pad was not even melting by the time the dish made it to the table. It was literally solid and the steak had absolutely no taste. I'm not sure if it was an off day or if the restaurant was on a decline. They need to do better, even the guest next to us had to send their cappuccino back and commented on the toast being bad. read more

My stepdaughter bought her father and I a gift card for Le Petit Bistro in Rhinebeck for $200.00 last Christmas. The card was sent to her home and she emailed it to us. We printed it and brought it when we dined there. Please not the card has an gift card number. Well you finished our meal , Presented the gift card, And were told they couldn't accept it because it was in the original car. Keep in mind this card had one number but they claim they don't have access to keep a registry on them. So they uh $200 from her and then we paid out-of-pocket for our own meal. She called them to dispute this issue she has a receipt on her credit card for the purchase and still they refuse to honor the card saying they have no way of keeping track. How is that possible if it is numbered? My advice is due not buy a gift card from them. read more

This is probably the best in Rhinebeck. A modern French cuisine that's very affordable. The restaurant has two part of seating, the one by the entrance is more modern with big windows the inside room is the original building more a darker tone old country home vibe. Sunday brunch has the regular on the QR code and also have special written on the board. Highly recommend their fried oyster is not overly oiled, just lightly dusted and fried a little bit so it's not overly cooked. Topped with some fish rows and cucumber. The French onion soup is very tasty as well. The mussels are very fresh but a little lack of flavor. Service is not super fast like in the city so need to move patient to anticipate a longer dining time. They also have a good wine selection. read more

This is priceless: shortly after my 2023 review, the owner contacted me to apologize and make good: he asked me to try Le Petit Bistro again. He offered me a gift card to come back. I appreciated the personal touch and the offer of a gift card and accepted his offer. He had all my contact information and said he would mail it to me and then...he never contacted me again! No gift card. This explains a few things about the restaurant and is a great demonstration of the trickle down effect of sloppy management. read more

We met local friends here on Saturday night. Three of us enjoyed the meal. I ordered the Hanger steak. Some bites were good, others were chewy. Under normal circumstances I would have called the server over. Since we were with friends that recommended this place, I just ate and kept quiet. Didn't want to insult them. This is a very pretty place when we arrived at 5:00. The other negative is the noise level. Even by NYC standards, this restaurant has a very high noise level. Absolutely delicious meal! Energetic, attractive space with a nice bar and closely spaced tables. I was very excited to see grilled sardines as appetizer. They are hard to find and tricky to prepare. Wonderful. Served on greens and topped with lemony sauce. If you've never had them, they are NOTHING like canned sardines! A rare hanger steak was superb and husband had grilled mackerel. Fish is often over cooked but this chef has it perfected. My dessert was incredible. A frozen almond soufflé. Wow. Service cheerful and efficient. Lots of very earnest and polite teen boys running around doing all sorts of tasks like serving up hot rolls and refreshing drinks. Sweet. Truly fantastic. My girlfriend's parents flew in from Chicago for a week and the best meal of the entire trip was hands down this restaurant. Mind you, we spent 4 days in manhattan before coming upstate and nothing came close to what we had at Le Petite Bistro. I grew up in Hudson Valley, worked in Rhinebeck and know the town and everything about this meal went above expectations. We came in on a busy Friday and sat in back by the window. Our server was phenomenal, helpful, and funny. We had the hanger steak, steak tartare, scallops and the duck. I know this area very well, ignore the pretentious spoiled reviewers, this is hands down one of the best restaurants in the Hudson Valley. P.S. In the 3 I've lived in Rhinebeck, I have had dinner here around 20 times. Most times have been good. The food was very good, and the service was always a bit strained. I previously worked in restaurants for years and understand how difficult it is. However, I stopped coming here altogether last year when I walked in 30 minutes before they closed, after getting back from work in NYC, and they simply ignored me like I was not standing there. The bar staff saw me and whispered to each other, the stayed in the back of the bar. The host just sat at the bar and looked at the papers in front of him. I was blown away. They had a couple of people in there still dining, and by their listed hours, there were 30 minutes left to dine. After having dined there so many times, I definitely expected to at least be acknowledged. I definitely was surprised to be completely ignored. It's at those moments when one realizes you've been giving them the benefit of the doubt a little too much. Sure, they have lots of regulars, but when you only cater to the monied residents of Rhinebeck, you're going to miss out on others who could have at least used a nice drink after a long day, and who understand the value of treating them well at the end of the night. read more

After dropping our sons off camping, we decided to head out to Rhinebeck for dinner. Decided to try Le Petit Bistro. Without reservations we were immediately seated outdoors. Staff was very friendly, all wearing masks and gloves, service was very prompt. After perusing the menu for couple of minutes we ordered French Onion Soup, Duck Confit with frisee salad and pasta with wild mushrooms. All dishes were good but the pasta was very good. Came here to celebrate a dear friends 50th birthday with 3 other women. We were seated at a small booth that barely fit all of us, but we took it in stride and tried to enjoy. The atmosphere was loud and lively, we were seated right near the kitchen with coffee being ground behind us. We didn't mind as we were having a great time laughing and catching up. The food was fine, nothing to write home about. However, the real upsetting part of the night was when the manager came over and lectured our table on needing to lower our voices. She was condescending, rude, and offered nothing to make the rest of our night enjoyable while the restaurant continued to hustle and bustle around us. So disappointing, as we were 4 middle aged professionals just trying to enjoy ourselves as we celebrate a milestone birthday. We won't return. read more

Had the French onion soup which was spot on, Gruyère was perfect. Steak tartare was decently made, but the steak frites was what i fondly remember- hearty and delicious, good portion too. On two occasions, I have had dinner at Le Petit Bistro in 2025. I was a guest of someone else. First time I ordered the duck, which had always been excellent at this restaurant. I was very disappointed. It arrived burnt on top and with runny mash potatoes and I don't remember the vegetable, probably green beans which seems to be their go to veggie. My dinner partner had already received his meal, and I didn't want to send it back. It was very dry and I asked the waitress if the regular chef was in the kitchen. She replied yes. I just chalked it up to having a bad night. My dinner partner enjoyed his so I didn't make a fuss. June 2025, I had visitors from out of town who had read the glowing reviews of Le Petit and wanted to go there. So once again I was invited to go and had another disappointing experience I ordered the scallops which came out slightly charcoaled on top. Again, served with runny mashed potatoes and green beans!! The cheapest sides you could put on a plate and not a good match with scallops. Also, since I was the driver, I ordered a non al beer. I asked for a regular non chilled glass and was told they didn't have non chilled glasses for beer? The waitstaff was great. They were friendly and knowledgeable explaining the menu items and wines. At least they knew what they were doing. Le Petit has had a series of owners, some very good and others not so good. I like to see our business in Rhinebeck succeed. For now, no more Le Petit for me. read more

Absolutely amazing!! I cannot say enough good things about this restaurant. Starting off the meal with warm bread and whipped butter set the tone for the meal. Raw oysters are a must for me when I dine out because of the numerous health benefits that I cannot prepare at home. Next, we had the most delicious steak tartare I have ever had. The photo speaks for itself. Lastly, we shared Ropa Vieja and it was so delicious. The shredded beef had the perfect flavor profile, basmati rice was cooked to perfection, plantains brought me back to when I visited Costa Rica and the beans left that cozy feeling in my belly. It truly upsets me to leave a three star review for this place, but our visit on Sunday evening was a serious disappointment. We had reservations for 5:45, and arrived a few minutes early. It wasn't very crowded, yet they started seating us in the middle of two very closely spaced, crowded tables. They agreed it was too close, and seated us in the other section that wasn't yet crowded. We asked for the wine list, as we always order a reasonably priced bottle of wine with dinner. We looked at the menu on our phone and decided on a bottle of Syrah. A few minutes later, we were told they might not have the wine. They came back and said they sold out the day before. We again looked at the wine list, and decided on another wine, a 2015 Pinot Noir for $55. The original Syrah was $45, so we already upped our normal $50 limit. We decided on our food, and ordered. He ordered potato leek soup, and we each ordered an appetizer and an entree. Since he was the only one having soup, he asked her to bring his soup first, and then bring our appetizers, so we could have our apps at the same time. They brought the wine, we saw it was the Pinot Noir, he (the wine steward, we assume) poured it and my partner approved. He then poured a little in each glass, saying that the wine cellar is a bit colder than he liked, so give the bottle time to come to temperature. (Huh? We expect $50 bottles of wine to be served at the proper temperature, but we let it go.) A bit of time passes, and our waitress comes over with my partner's potato leek soup, and french onion soup. What??? We definitely didn't order french onion soup. The waitress seemed confused when we told her I didn't order any soup. She took them BOTH back. A little while later, when she didn't come back, we asked where his soup was, and she said they were keeping it hot. What???? Why???? (While we were waiting for her to bring his soup back out, we saw her bring the same soup to someone two tables away.) We said she should bring it. A little while later, she said it was going to be crowded on the (tiny) table. Apparently, she was keeping the soup hot so she could bring everything out together. What???? First of all, we explicitly asked for his soup to come out first, and then bring the appetizers so we could eat them while they are hot. She said of course we want them hot, and she offered to SELL our mussels so we could eat them after his soup and my appetizer as another course so they'd be hot. What??? (Around this time, we saw her bring another bowl of soup to the same person two tables away, and he looked up at her and clearly it was another screw up.) Whatever. We agreed to bringing things her way just so we could enjoy what was already on the table while it was still hot! If the service thus far hadn't been a pathetic comedy of errors, we would simply have been raving about the food. The food, as usual, was incredible. My crispy fried oysters were as amazing as ever. His soup was fantastic, and his mussels were tender, flavorful and perfect along with the frites and dunked bread! A short time later, our entrees arrived. My lamb chops were perfectly medium rare, and just about the best I have ever had. His duck was just ducky...lol. Actually he was extremely happy with it. The Pinot Noir we ordered was a perfect accompaniment to our meal. We barely had room for dessert, so we decided to have coffee, and share the profiteroles. It was the end to a delicious meal. It was a genuine shame that service was such a disaster. Maybe it was her first day, maybe she was overwhelmed, maybe she was having a bad day, or maybe it was all of the above. Who knows. So we asked for our check, and the service mistakes just kept coming. The bottle of wine we ordered was supposed to be $55. (This was already after we couldn't get the original $45 bottle.). We were charged $85 for the wine!!!!! WTF??? My partner actually went to get the wine list to double check the price. Apparently, they brought us the 2018 even though we CLEARLY ordered the 2015. I decided that since it was my partner's birthday, and I was paying for it, I didn't want to argue about it. We never thought that we should have stopped the wine steward before he opened it so we could check the entire wine label against the wine list. Pulling the wrong vintage and then charging us double what we originally wanted to pay (had they not run out of the wine we really wanted), just added insult to injury for the night. Normally, we would not think twice about coming back here again, or recommending it to friends, but it seriously makes us reconsider. Spending over $270 for two people for dinner, and getting the service we did, just makes us reconsider returning or recommending this place. The food was 5 stars. The service was zero stars. I am hoping that whatever happened with the service on Sunday night is rectified. Quickly. read more

I have been to this restaurant many times and always leave wondering why I bothered spending money there. Recently they were one a few restaurants to have a significant number of health code violations and that comes as no surprise. That is the final nail in the coffin for me. I'd categorize the food as a half step above bar food masking as a fine dining restaurant. They have some ok wine but I've had some pretty bad cocktails there. If you are looking to have good French food in the general area this is not the place. I would go to Champetre in Pine Plains or La Canard in Kingston. Both worth the money and the drive. read more

Onion soup, blazing hot, in a crock, tasted good, personally like mine with more of a peppery taste as opposed to sweet. But it hit the spot for a cold day Beet salad was fire, size was great, the orange and pickled onion made a nice contrast to the normal. Pork schnitzel was amazing, only ate half and can't wait to dive back in later tonight with the leftovers. The beef bourguignon was unfortunately pasty and dry, took a few bites and then stole my partners schnitzel. Dessert trio was good, they had to sub one of the items but it happens. read more

Continuing our Sunday brunch exploration, we happened on Le Petit Bistro in Rhinebeck. We had planned to go to Hudson, but we were getting very hungry, so halfway up Route 9 seemed like a good bet. We called ahead for a reservation & I highly recommend you do so, as this place fills up quickly on a Sunday & it's where all the 'cool' people in Rhinebeck go. No celebrity sightings today however. We were seated at the (marble) bar close by the entrance so we could see all the comings & goings. We love to sit at the bar - sometimes you can engage with other patrons & the bar tender can always see when you have an empty glass! We skipped coffee this time, as it was getting on for 1pm - my SO went for a French beer - Kronenbourg 1664 - I had a Mimosa. My first choice was a Bellini, but they were out of Peach. Nevertheless, the Momosa was made in front of me & it was the perfect mix of OJ & in this case a tasty Cremant. The atmosphere of Le Petit Bistro is quaint & very French, the service is efficient (& not particularly French!) COVID spacing was good & in fact some patrons were moved a little when an adjacent group came in & needed the space. My SO had the Huevos Rancheros (he's a SoCal guy) & he was pleasantly surprised. Although there was no rancheros sauce (in the traditional sense), he said the green pork chili (pulled pork) and Pico de Gallo sauce was complex, delicious and a little spicy. A pile of black beans sat under the sauce and the poached eggs were perfectly cooked - running into the beans below. I had the German Potato Pancakes served with bacon & eggs however & toast. The pancakes were crisp and creamy inside, with a dollop of creme fraiche on top. The bacon looked to be homemade, as it was thick & tasted very fresh. The eggs were perfectly cooked over easy. My second Mimosa went down very nicely & we did not feel rushed to leave for other guests. I did take home a french pastry, I couldn't fit it in, but it looked (& tasted) so good! The service and food is always on point . The bread that they serve individually is the best . I would skip the bistro salad . It's very plain but the dressing is decadent . I always get the hangar steak and sometimes substitute the frites for mashed potatoes but tonight I decided on the frites and it came with aioli and asparagus that was cooked to perfection . My hubby always gets the ny strip steak Au Poivre. The sauce is pretty heavy so he has a hard time finishing . If you have never been, you need to go.
