If you're looking for an aesthetic spot for a date night or girl's dinner I would highly recommend this spot. However, just keep in mind food wise that you'll be paying pretty inflated prices for elevated vietnamese food. I highly recommend making reservations at least a week or two in advance as the restaurant was completely packed. For drinks we started off with a bottle of wine and espresso martinis which were surprisingly one of the best I've had around Houston. Food: Cha Gio: egg rolls 4/5 they were very crispy but a very small portion Suon Nuong: pork ribs 4/5 these were flavorful and tender Chicken and Cabbage salad: 3/5 standard but nothing special Hu Tieu Xao Bo: Beef noodle stir fry 3/5 Bo Luc Lac: Shaking beef 3.5/5 tender beef but again small portion Snapper: 3.5/5 it was deboned and fish was tender/flavorful Warm chocolate cake: 3.5/5 Fried donuts: 4/5 Creme brulee: 3/5 Overall, we had an enjoyable dinner and service was great. The dumplings were a bit overcooked the wrapper was falling apart and the filling had a slightly rubbery texture. The beef itself was good, but the garlic noodles were just okay and didn't really stand out, especially for the price. Service was also on the slower side and a bit inattentive not sure if it was because I was alone? This added to the overall experience. The overall design and aesthetic really add to the nice vibe and of course I've found service to be excellent. No to the food, there are a lot of typical Vietnamese dishes you can choose from where you can't go wrong. The Cha Gio Crispy Shrimp & Pork Roll, Banh Cuon CHICKEN & MUSHROOM RAVIOLI are must try from the small plates items. For starters, we had the chicken dumplings and tuna tartare. I could've done without the tartare just because it was classically made, nothing overly to die for. To add to the subpar food experience, our server was incredibly robotic. While he was polite, he lacked any genuine friendliness. He didn't smile once during our entire meal. On top of that, he opened a second bottle of sparkling water without asking if we wanted it. He proceeded to top off our glasses even though they were already half full. When we politely declined the second bottle by stopping him from pouring and expressed our intention to order coffee instead, he didn't say anything and just walked off with the newly opened bottle of sparking water. When we received our check, we noticed that the second bottle of sparkling water was included in our bill. When we inquired about it, he simply replied that it had already been opened, and therefore, we had to pay for it. While I completely understand and even support the idea of servers trying to increase the bill for a larger tip, there's a far more honest and effective approach. After reading the reviews for this place, all I can say is--my sentiments exactly. Don't get me wrong, the food was great, but the service fell far short of my expectations, especially considering the restaurant's reputation, location, and cuisine. We had a reservation on a Monday evening and were seated immediately upon arrival. The restaurant's ambiance definitely captures colonial Vietnam, with an elegant atmosphere downstairs. If you make the trek upstairs to the restroom, however, you'll feel like you've been transported to an island in Vietnam--the space is more colorful and relaxed, with lounge seating compared to the downstairs. To start, we ordered the Lychee Martini and Green Makrut Gimlet. Both were true to their descriptions--the martini had an earthy, slightly citrusy profile and was well-balanced. For our entrees, we had the shaking beef, signature fried rice, and snow crab and prawns. The shaking beef, in my opinion, was more of a salad with a side of caramelized filet mignon. The filet itself was delicious, but for a "large plate," I expected a bit more. No biggie, though--we still ate every bite. The snow crab and prawns arrived in a saucy garlic butter, with perfectly cut snow crab claws that went on top of a grilled, buttered baguette. For the rice, we requested shrimp instead of sausage, and it was great. The lemongrass flavor really came through, and I especially liked how the chicken breast was cut and incorporated into the dish. Overall, everything complemented each other well, and the meal itself was fantastic. The biggest disappointment? The service. Our waiter was practically non-existent. He took our order in a monotone voice, offered no recommendations unless asked, and didn't check on us at all. There was no warmth, no engagement--just someone going through the motions. We were celebrating my dad's birthday, so I was excited to order a special dessert for him. The kitchen did an incredible job, presenting a beautiful plate with "Happy Birthday" written on it. But instead of making it a moment, our waiter simply set it down and walked away--just another task to check off. For a fine dining establishment, I expected more than just great food. We came here for our monthly girls night dinner with a reservation. we were on time and they still gave our table in the main dining to someone else. We sat upstairs on the terrace. When l commented in Open Table all I got was 'we hope you give us another try'! That's bad service on top of bad service. I also noticed the wait staff seems to have gone from a professional class to college kids that seemed not very well trained. Had a wonderful experience at Le Colonial Houston. I was a bit worried because several reviews lately did not give great reviews for the service but we had a wonderful time. We did have a 9 pm reservation on a Thursday so felt like that last hour, we were the only ones there so everyone seemed super attentive to us. There was also a great lounge vocalist that were crooning jazzy tunes that added to the mood. Next, we went down to our table when it was ready and ordered a feast. The crispy red snapper (ca chien saigon), garlic noodles and the beet salad (goi cu cai do) was superb. The way southeast asian cuisine prep and cooks fish has been astounding me in the most pleasurable way lately and Le Colonial did not disappoint. It was $100 for the whole fish and was shared by the 5 of us. We also got the ginger glazed chicken claypot (ga xao gong) and 2 orders of garlic noodles that we polished. Also, the hanoi beef noodle (pho bo) soup and the spicy chicken soup (sup ca cai) as very enjoyable as well. Moreover, they had a decent wine list and definitely went through 2 bottles of some chenin blancs!
