I got the chicken soup which is basically Tom kha. It was good and a nice size for an app so I didn't get anything else. My friend had a noodle dish that she described as ok. After dinner we went upstairs to the cocktail lounge which was much more quiet and relaxed. The restrooms are also located upstairs assessable via stairs or elevators. When I looked over, there were a couple people wearing shorts on actually but specifically there was a lady at the bar with a pair of white shorts, taller than me bigger than me but white and she was allowed to wear hers I pointed out to her that upon scan the room that I noticed there are multiple people who have shorts that I have on, and that I would like to speak to a manager. I did not speak to the manager, however she gave us an option to either sit at the bar or just sit outside . We honestly should've left, but I wanted that drink . I was very excited to try Le Colonial based on friends reviews and the menu for HRW. However, I would say that I was less than thrilled with the entire dining experience and I'm unsure if I would return. Though I was seated pretty immediately upon arrival, it took about 15 minutes to get a glass of water, let alone place my order. I chose to do the chicken dumplings, green curry shrimp and garlic green beans, and the vanilla crème brulee for dessert. My appetizer came out pretty immediately but my entree didn't come for about 45 minutes. While it was busy, my server didn't acknowledge the amount of time that had passed. I hadn't intended for this to be a 2 hour dining experience but given how long everything took, it was inevitable. Separate from my dining experience, I wanted to note that there is a dress code posted on the website but it seemed that it was not enforced (or only enforced with some people?) which was quite confusing. The crowding by the bar that spills into the seated dining area was also quite overstimulating if you sit in the front of the dining area upstairs. My mom and I stopped here for a cute patio lunch. It is Houston restaurant week so we did get a two course meal. However, we did pick a few things that had an up-charge, but totally worth it! I love a lychee martini down!!!! I really enjoyed their martini. The food was very flavorful and full of spice. We both had the chicken stirfry. My mom had the tuna tartare and I had the pork and chicken eggrolls. I think altogether after tip I paid around $180 for the both of us. The drinks were pricey, but pretty good. If you're looking for an aesthetic spot for a date night or girl's dinner I would highly recommend this spot. However, just keep in mind food wise that you'll be paying pretty inflated prices for elevated vietnamese food. I highly recommend making reservations at least a week or two in advance as the restaurant was completely packed. The dumplings were a bit overcooked the wrapper was falling apart and the filling had a slightly rubbery texture. The beef itself was good, but the garlic noodles were just okay and didn't really stand out, especially for the price. Seafood Ceviche - The citrus flavor in this dish was very subtle. Adding more citrus flavor would have made the dish more enjoyable. I do not recommend ordering this dish. I would rate this dish a 1/5. Sesame Beef Ravioli - My lunch date found the sesame beef dry and flavorless, and thought the flat rice noodles had an overly thick and rubbery texture. 2/5 rating for this dish. To add to the subpar food experience, our server was incredibly robotic. While he was polite, he lacked any genuine friendliness. He didn't smile once during our entire meal. On top of that, he opened a second bottle of sparkling water without asking if we wanted it. He proceeded to top off our glasses even though they were already half full. When we politely declined the second bottle by stopping him from pouring and expressed our intention to order coffee instead, he didn't say anything and just walked off with the newly opened bottle of sparking water. When we received our check, we noticed that the second bottle of sparkling water was included in our bill. When we inquired about it, he simply replied that it had already been opened, and therefore, we had to pay for it. While I completely understand and even support the idea of servers trying to increase the bill for a larger tip, there's a far more honest and effective approach. I'm not usually one to post negative restaurant reviews, but my experience at Le Colonial was truly disappointing. I made a reservation for four people on August 1 at 8:00 p.m. When I arrived, the two hostesses informed me that our table was not ready and invited us to wait at the bar. Our party was present by 8:10 p.m., except for one guest who could no longer attend. Despite having a reservation, we waited an hour and ten minutes past our reservation time to be seated. During the entire wait, no one from management provided an update. My friends had to approach the host stand three separate times to ask about our table. Meanwhile, guests who arrived after us were seated, served, and had already eaten before we even sat down. We were essentially the last party seated that evening, making the reservation feel meaningless. The bartenders were kind and offered us complimentary Prosecco after noticing our frustration. Management did not acknowledge our concerns until we shared our experience with our server. A man in a suit ( GM ) then approached us three times near the end of the evening. Because of how we were spoken to during the first interaction, we ultimately asked for our dessert to go. Between the excessive wait, lack of communication, poor treatment, and average food, this experience was not worth the price. We had a reservation on a Monday evening and were seated immediately upon arrival. The restaurant's ambiance definitely captures colonial Vietnam, with an elegant atmosphere downstairs. If you make the trek upstairs to the restroom, however, you'll feel like you've been transported to an island in Vietnam--the space is more colorful and relaxed, with lounge seating compared to the downstairs. To start, we ordered the Lychee Martini and Green Makrut Gimlet. Both were true to their descriptions--the martini had an earthy, slightly citrusy profile and was well-balanced. For our entrees, we had the shaking beef, signature fried rice, and snow crab and prawns. The shaking beef, in my opinion, was more of a salad with a side of caramelized filet mignon. The filet itself was delicious, but for a "large plate," I expected a bit more. No biggie, though--we still ate every bite. The snow crab and prawns arrived in a saucy garlic butter, with perfectly cut snow crab claws that went on top of a grilled, buttered baguette. For the rice, we requested shrimp instead of sausage, and it was great. The lemongrass flavor really came through, and I especially liked how the chicken breast was cut and incorporated into the dish. Overall, everything complemented each other well, and the meal itself was fantastic. The biggest disappointment? The service. Our waiter was practically non-existent. He took our order in a monotone voice, offered no recommendations unless asked, and didn't check on us at all. There was no warmth, no engagement--just someone going through the motions. We were celebrating my dad's birthday, so I was excited to order a special dessert for him. The kitchen did an incredible job, presenting a beautiful plate with "Happy Birthday" written on it. We came here for our monthly girls night dinner with a reservation. we were on time and they still gave our table in the main dining to someone else. We sat upstairs on the terrace.
