A warm and intimate atmosphere with an excellent staff. I was traveling solo and being in crowded noisy restaurants alone can be overwhelming so this small quiet atmosphere was perfect. I have eaten dinner at Le Coupe Chou 4 times over the past 5 years. Is it the best example of classic French cuisine? By no means. But I do enjoy the beef bourginon here. The flavors are creamy smooth and the texture is sublimely soft. My wife and I return here yearly to dine just one meal because the dining rooms are ridiculously romantic. You get the picture: candle light, fireplaces, old stone walls decorated with ancient bric-a-brac. The rooms are filled with warm and comforting aromas. Service is sincere, helpful, friendly. I'm not sure if English is spoken, as I always enter speaking my halting French. I would assume that at this location just steps from Tourist Central Rue des ecoles, the staff are multi-linguistic. I think the meal tariff is a bit high for the quality of the food. You're paying for the high rent district and the ambience. None the less, come here to impress your special someone. Food was ok but we waited 2 hours before we got our main course and we only had the soup and snails as an appetizer and my soup was lukewarm not hot. We made a reservation and got to the restaurant at 8:30pm and we didn't get our food until 10:25pm. After we waited over 1 1/2 hrs we asked the waiter how much longer for our food and he then told us there was a table of 48 people that had just got there food so it would be out soon but it was still another 20 mins. It would have been nice if the restaurant told us there was a group of 48 people before us and it would take 2 hours before we would get our food. We would have gone somewhere else for dinner. My portion of the beef bourguignon was very tiny, only 2 pieces of meat in meal. Was planning on ordering dessert but it was almost 11pm so it was to late for me to eat dessert. Would never go back and would not recommend this restaurant. read more

First I would like to say that bad customer service is a big no no in my book and this place is by far the worst I have ever experienced in my life. We were yelled at by the hostess at the front because she said we cancelled and did not call. Well the answer to that is "we don't live here, we are foreigners and we don't have a phone to call from". She continued to yell at us and disrespect us. It was an absolute mess. We decided to stay because we thought maybe the food is better and to our disappointment it was not. The risotto with prawns was crunchy, risotto is supposed to be smooth and the prawns tasted awful as well. The lamb chops were also not tender and did not taste good. We also were paying attention to see if she would be rude and disrespectful to anyone else. Everyone around us did not speak French and were Americans. We thought she would be rude to all but she was very caring and at one point we saw her apologizing and speaking in English just fine with other tables. The server was subpar, just like every server in France where they leave your table alone and you have to call them when you want your check at the end of the night. I did ask the server what the name of the hostess is and he let me know who she is and then I saw him talking to her and telling her that I asked about her and she gave me a dirty look. Just a plain awful person. But yeah both the food and service are bad, I would not recommend. By the way it was also our anniversary dinner and we had the worst experience. Stay away! read more

Really lovely experience at Le Coupe-Chou. My friend recommended this place so I visited for my last night in Paris. The building alone makes it a special dining spot. I decided to treat myself to aperitif, main plate, glass of wine, and cheese plate. It was a bit of a splurge for me but by Paris standards, not too expensive. The service was very attentive (do NOT believe the American gossip about poor service in Paris). The food was very tasty -- no complaints at all. The guests were mostly not French, so in that respect the place *is* somewhat "touristy" but most definitely *not* a "tourist trap"--an important distinction. (Although I was eating dinner earlier than is typical in Paris... so it's possible more locals patronize the establishment later in the evening?) The ambience, food, drinks, and service were legitimately good. A great place to enjoy traditional French plates in a beautiful setting. read more

Le Coupe Chou is located in a quieter, less touristy area of Paris on a cute little cobblestone street. The restaurant is very cozy and romantic (which is not necessarily ideal when you're dining with coworkers, but nice nonetheless). We didn't have a reservation, but the staff was more than happy to seat us outside. The service was great, especially since there were definitely some language barriers. All of the waitresses we had were extremely friendly, and checked up on us to make sure everything was going well. My coworkers and I split the escargot to start, which was perfectly prepared with the traditional garlic sauce. I had the avocado tartar with shrimp, which was really light and refreshing. I also sprung for dessert since my meal was on the lighter side, and had the three chocolate marble cake. The cake was less cakey and more like a mousse texture, but it was delicious! I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Paris for a quintessential French meal. read more

My husband and I first discovered Le Coupe-Chou last October, by recommendation of our hotel. At that time, we had a very good dinner, and service was excellent. When we visited Paris again at the end of May, a few weeks ago, we decided to treat ourselves and return for dinner. The setting is amazing and romantic, though the prices are quite a bit more than we normally pay while in Paris. We had so be looking forward to our second visit to the restaurant, but unfortunately, the extremely rude manager ruined our evening. I should mention that our waiter was very nice and fairly attentive. We started with the cauliflower soup, which was very good. I ordered the boeuf bourguignon, which I liked. My husband ordered the sea bream, which was served on a bed of fennel. The fish was awful! After my husband removed the skin, all that was left of the fish was very, very dark flesh. Needless to say, it was extremely strong and not at all edible. When my husband asked our waiter if he could instead order the boeuf bourguignon, he said that not only would we have to pay for the fish that was terrible, but the boeuf bourguignon as well. My husband asked to speak with the manager, and it went all down hill from there. When I say the manager was extremely rude, that is putting it mildly. We've visited Paris every year for the past 18 years, and have travelled quite a bit throughout Europe. Never, ever have we been treated so poorly til we met the manager at Le Coupe-Chou! He told my husband the same thing as the waiter did. There would be no "replacement", he would have to pay for the fish, which was disgusting, and the replacement meal of boeuf bourguignon, also. He rudely said that since my husband "did not like the taste" he couldn't do anything about it. "What if 2,000 other diners did the same?!!!", he said!!! My husband said he would be happy to pay for a new meal, but was not going to pay for the fish. The manager actually picked the fish up, held it to his nose, and loudly declared "there is nothing wrong with this fish!!". To add insult to injury, I was literally in the middle of taking a bite of my boeuf bourguignon, when the manager grabbed my plate away from me, and told us that we had to leave!!! The other tables (full of other Americans) heard every word and saw it all. I've never been more humiliated in my life, and left the restaurant in tears! Bottom line, if you eat here and don't care for your meal, don't complain or ask for any changes, or you will most likely be treated like crap, just like we were!!! read more

We stumbled upon Le Coupe Chou while walking around the Latin Quarter, and were able to get a table on a Sunday night without a reservation. I became a little hesitant when I realized that all of the patrons were speaking English, making me wonder whether we'd found ourselves in a tourist trap. But this ended up being a totally authentic and memorable French dining experience. It's set off the beaten path on a cute cobblestone street. The interior is super charming and cozy, with exposed stone walls, brick tile floors and dim lighting. It is a perfect setting for a date or romantic dinner. My friend ordered a beef dish and I had the scallops, both of which were perfectly cooked and so delicious. Apparently the escargot is a favorite dish, because it looked like almost every other table had ordered it. The service was not so great, and the proprietor was a bit irritable with us. We didn't receive service for a pretty long time after we were seated. They also didn't inform us that the kitchen was closing until after the fact, so it was a bit disappointing not to have the chance to order dessert. One of the most unique & romantic dinner experienced I've ever had! This gorgeous little restaurant has an incredible atmosphere inside, & I never wanted to leave. My husband and I made a reservation (highly recommend doing so, as it fills up quickly & there's not a huge amount of available tables - but that contributes to its charm!!) and were seated immediately at a quaint little table under a staircase. It seems weird - but it was truly charming! The waitstaff was attentive and helpful. My only complaint would be the lack of vegetarian options - they had a veggie ratatouille but it was just "ok". I do, however, realize that I'm in Paris, and typical Parisian fare is meaty. So I don't fault them, as this is definitely a quintessential Parisian restaurant. Just not as friendly for vegetarians. By now, I've eaten about a brace of ducks so, I can definitely say this was not great. It was very overdone, dry and not even a tad pink. As for the service... it is France but, after receiving the bill, it took about 20-30 minutes for our server to come pick up the check. I was pressed for time so this was not very fun. We LOVED this restaurant. The ambiance was warm and inviting. Good for a date, nice night out or dinner with friends. The food was incredible. We shared the beetroot tartare as an appetizer, the duck breast with mushrooms and ratatouille with burrata for mains and shared the Chocolate Liégeois for dessert. The beets were great to share. Might have been too much for just one person, unless you really love lots of bleu cheese. The mains were both delicious. The sauce on the duck was incredible. The dessert was both light and decadent. Lots of wine choices (glass, carafe, bottles) without being overwhelming. Our server was incredible. He spoke perfect English and was very helpful with the menu and gave us great info about the restaurant and buildings. I had the bourguignon a la hour de boeuf and it was seasoned well and very pleasing to the taste. The service was very hospitable and everyone had a very pleasant attitude even with the extremely hot temperature of the season. I enjoyed my meal with the house red and it was awesome and finished well. You have to put this place on your must do list in Paris!! Atmosphere was amazing- ask to sit near the fireplace - filled with ambiance, charm and character. Food was nicely prepared and well balanced overall. The two things that detracted were 1) an exterior construction scaffolding light that shined directly in our faces thru the window (wish they would've blocked that, granted, this will likely be rectified soon when construction on their building wraps up) and 2) disengaged host whose greeting was lackluster at best. We attempted a dinner there last Saturday. It was an awful experience. The welcome was brusque and it didn't get better from there on. The server was charming but inexperienced. The food was dreadful. We each had the 27euro menu. The Mushroom soup was tepid at best and should have been sent back, but we made the mistake of not sending it. The pork was cold when it arrived. That did get sent back and came back not much warmer. At that point we decided to ask for the check. They attempted to charge us for two full meals which resulted in a battle with the ass of a manager who was border line nasty. He did finally just charge us for the soup and a glass of wine. Never apologized or made any attempt to turn a bad situation around. Skip this tourist trap and try the restaurant across the street instead.
