Traveling for work and stayed in Georgetown and heard great things about this restaurant. Ordered the Steak Frites (NY Strip) cooked medium rare and it was a very good dinner! Lots of seating and a great selection of wines and cocktails. Whether you are dropping in for a happy hour or dinner this is a spot worth checking out. The best part was honestly the service. Miriam was so nice, attentive and made sure we were always taken care of.

Normally French cuisine is a lot better, so this place has a high bar to pass and unfortunately it doesn't. The food is very salty and most dishes were at best ok with the gnocchi and the French onion soup, but everything else was rather disappointing. The desserts were a bit better with the creme brulee standing out for me, but that's if you end up wanting dessert after a disappointing meal. Service is good, attentive and easy to find your server and they were always making sure to refill your water or soda. The place is a bit noisy so not really a place to bring a date. And if you have a group of friends you won't be able to talk that well. Not a place I would recommend to anyone and I'd only go back if people I knew wanted to go there, despite my warnings that it's not really worth it.

I've now been here a couple of times. The food is excellent and the portions are larger than what you'd typically expect for a French restaurant. We had a party of 10 and the server was excellent and kept up with us well. I think all 10 of us thought this was an amazing meal. We went early, at like 5:30pm so it was pretty quiet in the restaurant, but by the time we finished our meal it was packed. We will definitely be back. See some pictures of a few of the appetizers and entrees.

I routinely wonder how Georgetown can possibly sustain so many French restaurants. They are now charging a 20% service charge on top of the tip- perhaps this is how? This review won't answer that question but maybe you'll wonder now too... I love the vibe of this place- it's gilded, warm and cozy. In my first experience years ago the place was packed, we sat at a tiny table deep in its bowels, nearly covered by red velvet curtains, with the feeling that this table had been shoved in its spot as a last minute hope to make room for two more diners. The salad nicoise was fantastic and I've thought of it regularly since. More recently we've discovered that Sunday nights in the deep winter are much emptier and have made that a tradition. I don't consider myself one for heavy French food but it always feels just right when the winter rages outside. I particularly recommend the beet carpaccio, French onion soup, salmon, and mussels. The Basque style cheesecake is awfully good for dessert.

The food here is rich and very flavorful. I especially recommend the escargot and the penne à la champignons, both well executed and satisfying. Service was just okay during my visit, but it was restaurant week and they were clearly busy. Overall, it's a great value for good-quality food, especially during restaurant week.

My croque monsieur was dominated by a large amount about of bread with an overlay of melted cheese on top. It's fairly pedestrian. The French onion soup gratinee misses the mark. It has lots of cheese melted on top of the soup bowl as well, but it's not touching the liquid, so not incorporated into the broth. No chopped-up baguette is mixed into the cheese so that it, too, gets crispy (gratinee part). The soup has good flavor however seems slapped together. The escargots sauvages were the best dish. Staff delivers proficient service.

This is my second time here at Brasserie Liberte. My first experience was a lot better. We had reservations and checked in at the hostess table. The hostess did not give the warmest reception and mumbled her words, and I had no clue what she said. Anyhow, we were seated in the back by the smaller bar area. Our waitress who was also running the bar did not give us good service. We constantly had to try to get her attention, and she hardly ever came by to check on us. I ordered the mussels with a side of frites and my friend had the eggs benedict. He said his meal was good but mine was just okay. I do like that the portions were large but the quality of the mussels was not the freshest. Some tasted so bad like they went rancid that I wanted to gag. Get the eggs benedict, not the mussels. I'll stick to other French restaurants in DC that I prefer more over this establishment.

Food was ok. Waitress took order wrong, delivered soup instead of a salad. Comped soup but salad took a while to arrive. Steak was overcooked and dry. Rest of family was done eating. Then the bill showed up, 20% surcharge for the cost of doing business. What? Raise prices, don't charge some bs fee.

Not a bad location but the food is quite underwhelming. Croque monsieur (sp?) was very good but skillet bouef was just a dry short rib soaked in a bunch of salt-less broth. Parisian gnocchi was nice.

We went to Brasserie Liberté last night after going somewhere else so we weren't looking for full meals. The restaurant itself is very large and warm but no natural light, staff was extremely friendly as well. The food we decent, I gnocchi was the star, it was so warm and pillowy soft but I wish you got more. The fries were also amazing, they do a salt and pepper seasoning combo which I love. Finally the French onion soup, honestly it wasn't the best but it was fine. Way too much cheese, it was completely overwhelming and the broth was very deep and rich but a little salty. Overall it was fine, however for 2 soups, gnocchi and fries it was $75. I may go back but it wouldn't be my first choice.

This spot has been on my wish list for years and I finally checked it off during restaurant week. The $40 dinner is by far the best value of any restaurant week menu in the city. They have decadent and delicious app options like escargot and steak tartare. The steak frites was cooked perfectly and there was no upcharge! I only wish I could have come sooner.

Came for a restaurant week, which had a prefix menu - $40 for 3 courses. We were greeted with some free bread and butter. I enjoyed how there was a lot of different options to choose from. I got the escargot as a starter and it was great. Oily & buttery everything you would want with some bread. Then I got the beef as my entrée that came with potatoes, onions, and carrots. It was pretty tasty, but I didn't think the beef would've melted more in my mouth. And did the night with the lemon tart, which is exactly what it sounds like. Service was good she checked in with us multiple times but it wasnt too busy on a monday night! would come back for restaurant week!

I went here for restaurant week with my best friend and let me tell you: this is a fantastic deal! If you want to go somewhere for restaurant week and get more for your buck then you need to check out Brasserie Liberte. For $40 we got an appetizer, entree and dessert. I ordered the onion soup (which is one of my favorites here) and the steak frites and cheesecake. I've been here quite a few times before so I can confirm that the food is not just better because of the deal, but it's good on any day! The fries were also absolutely delicious and the cheesecake was light but still decadent. They also have a good deal on house wine too! $8 for a glass and $30 for a bottle! If you want a good deal, definitely check their restaurant week out. And if you want a good meal, come at any time! The service was quick and attentive (once we finished a course, the next came within a minute). And the vibes are romantic and moody. I loved how homey yet chic it felt.

    Hi, is it kids friendly?

Yes, it is. When we went, there was a 16 year old birthday party for 8 or so.

What is the "other-standard" reservation seating refer to when booking on OpenTable? Is this outdoor seating?

    Yes, outdoor/patio seating

Hi - what's the Attire/dress code? I saw Ambience is listed as classy, but the restaurant's website also says "cozy and laidback setting."

Hi, we were in jeans & nice sweaters, it's not a stuffy, formal atmosphere. Excellent menu & service.

Dispelling the myth that French cuisine is pretentious, we felt like we were in a home, and that we would be fed full to the brim. Came in while it was packed late into the night. We were sat immediately and had a wonderful time. Our waitresses were patient and had great recommendations for our first time trying French food. They seem incredibly experienced and added comfort in the way they spoke to their customers and ran their tables. We were even greeted by the owner who was great and cheery to each table he visited. The one night we went, it was incredibly packed with people having intimate, lighthearted, and laughter-filled gatherings, tables with multiple rounds of wine, everyone sharing their fries, and so he should feel proud of this place. Touches like this made it as though we were dining in someone's house. And I love that they start you off generously with bread and butter. Its a type of french loaf that is nice and fluffy, and I'd recommend setting some on the side if you're ordering a brothy dish. We ordered Moules Marinières, which came in a delightfully large cauldron of juicy plump clean muscles swimming in an herbaceous-garlicky white wine sauce. Unassumable from the simplicity of ingredients they threw together, but incredibly complex in flavor. This is one of the few times I actually tasted bay leaf, and amongst the fewer times I found the use of rosemary not be so overpowering. The mussel liquor at the bottom was perfect when soaked up in bread. What an incredible dish. We also tried a classic, Le Steak Maison, which was also distinctively flavorful. Our steak had a perfect cook at medium rare, and was uniquely seasoned with some sort of blend of herbes de provence. The fries were pretty standard and substantial, but paired with the Béarnaise sauce, it was such a tangy play of richness and acidity. Again really simple ingredients just executed so well. Great job, looking forward to coming again to try more on this large menu.

The numerous other 1-star reviews were correct. Our recent experience with this establishment was nothing short of a nightmare. We forecasted a total F&B cost at their Opaline restaurant of approximately $6,000 for our event, yet we were hit with an astronomical charge of $11,178. That is a staggering 100% markup over the expected total, and we are certain the consumption did not come anywhere near those figures. We closely monitored the food and beverage service throughout the night, and the numbers they reported are, frankly, a work of fiction. We presented our discrepancy to the Opaline Sofitel Washington DC Lafayette Square Director of Catering, Sherry Mostaghim, but no refund was provided or a discussion of our evidence. We escalated to the General Manager, Karla Erales, but were unable to secure any refund or an audit of the bill. Their billing math does not add up to reality: Alcohol Consumption: The invoice claims 28 bottles of wine were served to just 19 guests in 90 minutes. The 28 wine bottles equates to 8 glasses per person, per hour--a physical impossibility. Even over three hours, the total volume of wine and liquor billed would average 12 drinks per person. Given the demographic of our guests, this volume is not just impossible; it is an egregious fabrication. If this bill were accurate, the staff would have needed to call ambulances, not present an invoice. Charcuterie Boards: We authorized $42 in charges for boards; we were billed $375. Sodas: We were charged for 57 sodas despite there being only four children present. We had read other negative reviews before booking and were specifically assured by management that we would have no issues. We felt that our invoice was significantly padded, and it seemed they assumed we would not scrutinize the charges. When confronted with clear evidence that the billed consumption was physically impossible, they chose to hide behind rigid, dismissive policy rather than correct their mistake. Do not trust the management at Sofitel Washington DC Lafayette Square. They are unwilling to engage with reality, let alone provide honest service.
