Grilled chicken sandwich (gluten free bread + potatoes instead of fries)
    Elena C.

I stayed at the hotel for a weekend and ended up eating at the Grant Grill for both lunch and breakfast. I grabbed a seat at the bar for lunch and sat at a table for breakfast. Service was great both times, everyone was super attentive and the food came up quickly. My sandwich was good (and they had GF bread), the portions were generous, and it was convenient to eat on-site. I would definitely recommend making a reservation, especially for breakfast/brunch since it gets pretty busy.

Located inside the US Grant hotel in downtown San Diego. There are too many good things to say about this restaurant. It's a historic restaurant where high society of San Diego would eat at since 1910. Highly suggest to call and reserve for breakfast or dinner. The weekend day we didn't reserve breakfast, we told them at 9:30a and waited until 10:30a. Service, food, ambience is superb. Parking is hard but they have a valet and lot dedicated to the hotel where you enter on 3rd Ave. For dinner, We ordered some calamari, carrots, asparagus, and mushrooms to share. Everything tasted superb but husband says carrots were a little overcooked. Then we got surf and turf which included 3 jumbo shrimp and a 10 oz steak. This meal was enough for the two of us for dinner and left overs for breakfast for two as well. The surf and turf costs $100 and 10 is steak alone is $67. We had breakfast here as well and loved the truffle quiche! Their Bloody Mary is fantastic. Tip: you get $100 credit at this restaurant from chase visa. Wow! Just an amazing experience from the moment we walked in. The hostess warmly welcomed us by name as I had a reservation. We were seated in a nice booth and our waiter Jose welcomed us and told us about a few items on the menu. It was late for lunch and we have an AYCE dinner planned in a few hours so we told Jose we wanted to just share the Mock Turtle soup and the Sea Bass. He brought over a basket of fresh breads and soft butter. There were 3 types of bread and all so good that we had no choice but to eat all of it despite wanting to eat light. Jose brought out two soup bowls and separately poured 1/2 portion for each of us. The Mock turtle soup is actually made with beef...and just so perfectly flavored and absolutely delicious! The sea bass came out so beautifully plated and brought us two plates for us to share on our own. The Sea bass was tender and flaky and the sauces were delectable. At the end of our meal, Jose surprised us with a complimentary birthday cheesecake. That was so nice of him. Food was perfect and service was spectacular. We really enjoyed ourselves.

This is the southern California height of elegance. We entered via the hotel's main entrance, which set the tone for high end service, settings and dining. We were greeted warmly and were made right at home. This evening started with their Flatbread: which was a notch above (see my pic). The actual bread was relatively thick for flat bread: yet was thin enough to allow the toppings to show off their palate of flavors. But, was thick enough to provide a nice chew. The duck confit had a very mild flavor and was lean. The mixture of cheeses, in combination with the sweet grapes and dried cherries, provided bursts of flavor. While the pinenuts offered a complimentary crunch. Overall, this was nicely done. We returned for breakfast. As you can see from my pic the complimentary rolls (AND matching amount of real butter) that came with our coffee. The Steel Cut Oatmeal was made with water and had a nice grouping of walnuts and marmalade. The Greek Yogurt Parfait, as you can see in my pic, had a plethora of toppings - all fresh and enhanced the yogurt. As seen in my Seasonal Fruit pic, you couldn't find fresher and better tasting berries anywhere.

Great service, pretty dining room on the surface but the seating (booths) are all stained and they feel cheap. The menu is rather boring and limited - nothing luxurious or regionally inspired. They do start you off with complimentary mini muffins. The pastries while warmed were frozen or many days old. Service is competent and all very friendly.

We stayed at the US Grant during our recent trip to SD, and decided to grab breakfast at the Grant Grill the morning we were flying back to NY because convenience. I enjoy sitting for breakfast when traveling, so it only made sense for us to check this place out. Like the hotel it sits in, the Grant Grill is filled with history - apparently up until the 70s women were not allowed in here until after 3pm; there's a convenient plaque just outside the restaurant that tells its story. Walking in, we were greeted by the lounge area which has an almost classic aesthetic - lots of medium woods with high-end details and fixtures. We were led towards the back of the space which opened up to the main dining room. This was also pretty grand with high ceilings, more wood, and an overall upscale feel. The breakfast menu is pretty standard - the obligatory items were there but they have a few things that are out of the box as well. Before even ordering, we were served three mini muffins with butter - these were tasty and a great start to our meal. I decided to keep the carb marathon going and get the gingerbread French toast for my main. This was ginger-flavored toast that was topped with pears and candied ginger. French toast isn't normally my go-to, but I have an affinity for gingerbread and couldn't resist. The dish was good - the toast wasn't overly mushy (sorry that's how I feel about FT) and they cut each slice in half which not only made it easier to handle but also aesthetically pleasing. Ginger flavor was definitely there but not overpowering. Service was great - Jose was very friendly and made sure our experience was seamless. Overall, I had a great experience at Grant Grill and am curious to see how their dinner service is; something to consider next time I'm in SD.

This restaurant is located inside the US Grant Hotel, where my sister and I stayed during our San Diego trip. We ended up sampling a bit of everything on the menu--breakfast, lunch, and dinner--either before heading out for the day or after sightseeing. The staff was attentive and polite, and the ambiance has a refined, classic‑contemporary feel. Honestly, everything we tried was delicious, from the appetizers and main dishes to the cocktails and desserts. Overall, it was a solid experience, and I'd happily come back again.

This was quite the quiet bar for lunch, but their by the glass wine menu was superb. My husband I came to watch a futbol match, which the staff had no problem putting on for us. Meanwhile, I was enjoying my salad and glasses of red (Prisoner, Quilt, and Silver Oak) while my husband had a substantial meat dish (don't recall which type of meat). Definitely plan to come back when visit friends and family in San Diego.

I was pleasantly surprised by my dining experience here. The restaurant is located in a hotel so I didn't have high expectations, but the dishes I had were well seasoned, cooked perfectly and the service was attentive. It's a beautiful space and very spacious. I got the catch of the day (spottail) and the pork loin. I especially liked the spottail since it was tender and juicy, as the pork loin was a bit on the tougher side. They also serve you sourdough bread as a starter.

My friend was staying at the hotel so me met up for brunch. First thing I noticed was how friendly and attentive ALL the staff were A+! We were seated at a booth, already set with silverware and condiments. We were immediately greeted with mini muffins and water as we sat down. The was a vast menu offering, ranging to sweet to savory. I saw Niçoise Salad on the menu so I knew I was going to order that. When our server returned, he informed me that the salad didn't come with tuna. I could add chicken, shrimp or catch of the day for an additional $12. Which I found odd, everywhere I've ordered the Niçoise Salad comes with tuna. No biggy, I switched to the Avocado salad instead. Which was refreshing and perfect about of brightness. Staff were on top of refilling our drinks and checking on us regularly. Overall great experience for a hotel restaurant. I would dine here if I was visiting a hotel guest again.

Grant Grill is a very high end restaurant located inside the famous U.S. Grant Hotel in downtown San Diego. When I walked in for dinner, I was instantly greeted by a live Jazz band, which really set the mood. The server was extremely kind and funny, and he even gave us some complimentary champagne for our anniversary! The focaccia bread that came was delicious, although it was slightly too dense for my liking; however, the butter that came with it was truly delicious. The Ricotta Gnocchi then came out and was one of the highlights, with the sauce being spectacular. The Scallops and Ribeye were then served together, with my favorite being the Scallops as the Ribeye was a little overcooked for my liking. Finally, the dessert was delicious as the cream was light and refreshing! Overall, Grant Grill was an amazing, high end dining experience. I loved the service, ambiance, and food. I would highly recommend for a night out!

The funniest part was actually finding the place. We kept looking at the Yelp photos of the exterior, and the logo made us think the restaurant was in a large standalone building. Our Tesla kept navigating us to the same location, but we couldn't find what we expected. On our second pass, FSD actually pulled us right in front of the entrance--even in a red zone for a brief moment--just so we could finally see the Starlite sign. It honestly felt like the car knew we weren't recognizing the place. It was such a funny experience that made FSD seem almost human. Once inside, we were blown away. The interior is absolutely top-notch--stylish, elegant, and full of character. The pistachio dessert and the chocolate mousse were pure heaven, rich, smooth, and beautifully presented. My husband and I just finished our dinner at Teleferic Barcelona when I suggested we give Raised by Wolves another try - as we had about an hour before picking up the kids. For a Saturday, I was pleasantly surprised that as walk-ups we only had to wait a few minutes before we were seated at the bar inside. While we waited, we enjoyed perusing their bottle selections for purchase and I'm happy to say that playing music slightly louder in the waiting/market area helped dull the sounds from the inside bar. It helps create more of a 'moment' when you sit at the fireplace and slowly turn inside. This time we were seated right at the bar, which was perfect for us. Chuck was our bartender and 10/10 on the cocktails he made. This time, I went with their Tiki Room and my husband an off-menu Boulevardier (which I have to say I'm impressed he knew what that was because even I didn't, lol). Both drinks were perfectly crafted and enjoyed by both of us. We only had a moment for just one drink this time, but I have to say our experience was so much better than our first (perhaps a fluke of an evening). The staff were all welcoming and knowledgable, other guests were dressed well, and the ambiance lent itself to the vibe we were looking for. After doing some homework, I made the connection that Raised By Wolves was part of the hospitality group that also owns Lafayette Hotel, The Baby Grand, Ironside, etc...all locations my husband and I absolutely adore. That being said, this place was so impressive, driving by multiple times and looking at it while looking for a parking space. I will tell you about the $80 ticket...later. When we walked in on a Thursday with a reservation, it was comfortably full like a Friday. I always say "an early reservation beats the rush," and it paid off because when we left, it became "nightclub" full of locals. The decor, later found out to be a themed restaurant, was so impressive with lights, foliage, and flowing water that I felt like a kid in Toys R' Us (R.I.P.). Our wait for being on time was less than my 15-minute patients, and we were seated in our requested "anywhere but near the kitchen" seating. Our waiter was very cordial and did not ask HAYD or CIHWA every 25 minutes, nor did he ignore us. We were left alone to eat. I know this because I saw him "eye-check our progress a couple of times." That's the sign of a good waiter/tress. Our special drinks were on point, and the large-portion dishes were a 4.5 by themselves. As a high-quality home chef and a military chow line platter, I was impressed with the presentation, so I had to ensure my camera skills paid homage. I suggest finding a place to park and walking to the restaurant if you drove, because the alleyway to the right of the entrance is patrolled. :0) Can't wait to return and try something new and see what the theme is. I suggest making a reservation because you won't get a table by walking in and "enjoying the experience of eating" there.

I probably did the wrong thing and didn't allow the ice packed on top of the swizzle to melt thoroughly enough into the drink to dilute the 151 overproof black Demerara's rum. Nae worries, brah. It was delicious. Affordable tiki-theme cocktails, decor(!) and atmosphere is why this place will remain popular and a must visit when in Sandy Eggo. Top notch!

It's hidden behind Craft & Commerce, and once you step inside, the immersive tiki atmosphere really sets the mood. The decor, lighting, and sound effects all come together to make the experience feel fun and memorable. Just know, if you are hoping to sit down, good luck! A lot of reservations are made in advance. However, at the bar, if you see a reservation sign and they're not there yet, staff will let you sit down once it's time to get up for the reserved party. DRINKS: 9/10 The cocktails were creative, well crafted, and definitely strong enough to make you feel like you were getting your money's worth. I also loved how much attention they put into the presentation. Every drink looked like a piece of art and added to the whole tiki experience. SERVICE: 9/10 The staff were friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. They took the time to answer questions and made great recommendations without making us feel rushed. AMBIANCE: 10/10 This is easily the highlight of the experience. The entire space is beautifully designed, and every little detail makes it feel like you've escaped into a hidden tropical bar. It's cozy, intimate, and unlike any other place I've been to in San Diego. Reservations are definitely worth making since the space is on the smaller side and fills up quickly. The only reason I'm giving 4 instead of 5 stars is that, while the experience and ambiance were amazing, the drinks are definitely on the pricier side. I understand you're paying for the craftsmanship and atmosphere, but it's probably not somewhere I'd visit regularly because of that. It's common for tiki bars to be pricey so it was to be expected. Overall, I'm really glad I finally got to experience False Idol. If you're in San Diego and enjoy creative cocktails in a one-of-a-kind atmosphere, I'd definitely recommend checking it out at least once!

His questions guided my indecision towards a Berkshire Old Fashioned that was fantastic despite my fumbling to get there. With the warm up round over and the old fashioned loosening up my creativity, round two was set to be a knockout. I love coffee (specifically strong espresso drinks), so I asked for a strong, coffee infused, punchy cocktail, but with a different base of alcohol from the old fashioned. What came out was the best cocktail I will probably ever have in my life. The bourbon cocktail with coffee liqueur (and a number of other garnishes I will never remember) hit the bullseye. Flavorful, strong, bold, delicious all at the same time. Unfortunately (?), this was a noble experiment so I'll forever be chasing the white whale of what this drink was. But that's the allure.

I would say this was probably our highlight of our trip in San Diego. Garrick, the bartender there, was super accommodating. Not only was he and the other bartender were making damn good drinks, they would legit talk to you. The ambiance of the place is cool too. Felt like I was going inside some continental room like John Wick. Definitely my vibe and definitely coming back. But if you ever get Garrick as your bartender, you're in for a treat!
