Our Saturday brunch was lovely! The large dining room had just a handful of tables seated and it was such a low key yet elegant space. The glass windows ensured we could speak at a normal volume despite our booth abutting the exteriors glass wall/windows. The staff are very friendly. Jose immediately greeted us and Ceslo shook my hand. Very sweet. Halfway through our delicious meal, several new patrons showed up and were seated nearby. They were so incredibly loud - it was akin to sledgehammer against porcelain. After sitting through 10 minutes of their performance, we couldn't take it anymore and Logan, our very efficient and compassionate server, relocated us to another part of the restaurant. We could resume our meal with equanimity and equilibrium and Logan also took care of us without our request. For the tip top service, I grant the Grant Grill 5 stars! I can wholeheartedly recommend the restaurant and would return in a heartbeat! read more

We stayed at the US Grant hotel on a quick trip to San Diego, and ended up here twice. First was a night cap. We walked in kind of late, and the bartender was kind enough to make us our cocktails even though it was so close to closing time, so thank you! Other staff were also bustling around us to bring the olives, water, etc... Came down for brunch the following day. Service was once again impeccable. Food was ok, nothing to write home about but nothing bad either. Hubby was sad they didn't have the veal at brunch when he saw it on the breakfast menu the day before. We came here mainly because we had free breakfast for staying in this hotel. It would have been convenient if not for the 40 minute wait we endured each day. I even came down early once to put our name down while my husband was getting ready, and they still made us wait 40 minutes. The food is good, but not exceptional or interesting. The problem stems from them being severely understaffed. I saw one or two waiters serving the whole place. Even though the place is large, they can't fill all the seats because they don't have the staff to cover it. I would skip this place unless you're getting a deal or staying here. read more

I stayed at the hotel for a weekend and ended up eating at the Grant Grill for both lunch and breakfast. I grabbed a seat at the bar for lunch and sat at a table for breakfast. Service was great both times, everyone was super attentive and the food came up quickly. My sandwich was good (and they had GF bread), the portions were generous, and it was convenient to eat on-site. Located inside the US Grant hotel in downtown San Diego. There are too many good things to say about this restaurant. It's a historic restaurant where high society of San Diego would eat at since 1910. Highly suggest to call and reserve for breakfast or dinner. The weekend day we didn't reserve breakfast, we told them at 9:30a and waited until 10:30a. Service, food, ambience is superb. Parking is hard but they have a valet and lot dedicated to the hotel where you enter on 3rd Ave. For dinner, We ordered some calamari, carrots, asparagus, and mushrooms to share. Everything tasted superb but husband says carrots were a little overcooked. Then we got surf and turf which included 3 jumbo shrimp and a 10 oz steak. This meal was enough for the two of us for dinner and left overs for breakfast for two as well. The surf and turf costs $100 and 10 is steak alone is $67. We had breakfast here as well and loved the truffle quiche! Their Bloody Mary is fantastic. Tip: you get $100 credit at this restaurant from chase visa. Wow! Just an amazing experience from the moment we walked in. The hostess warmly welcomed us by name as I had a reservation. We were seated in a nice booth and our waiter Jose welcomed us and told us about a few items on the menu. It was late for lunch and we have an AYCE dinner planned in a few hours so we told Jose we wanted to just share the Mock Turtle soup and the Sea Bass. He brought over a basket of fresh breads and soft butter. There were 3 types of bread and all so good that we had no choice but to eat all of it despite wanting to eat light. Jose brought out two soup bowls and separately poured 1/2 portion for each of us. The Mock turtle soup is actually made with beef...and just so perfectly flavored and absolutely delicious! The sea bass came out so beautifully plated and brought us two plates for us to share on our own. The Sea bass was tender and flaky and the sauces were delectable. At the end of our meal, Jose surprised us with a complimentary birthday cheesecake. That was so nice of him. Food was perfect and service was spectacular. We really enjoyed ourselves. read more

This is the southern California height of elegance. We entered via the hotel's main entrance, which set the tone for high end service, settings and dining. We were greeted warmly and were made right at home. This evening started with their Flatbread: which was a notch above (see my pic). The actual bread was relatively thick for flat bread: yet was thin enough to allow the toppings to show off their palate of flavors. But, was thick enough to provide a nice chew. The duck confit had a very mild flavor and was lean. The mixture of cheeses, in combination with the sweet grapes and dried cherries, provided bursts of flavor. While the pinenuts offered a complimentary crunch. Overall, this was nicely done. We returned for breakfast. As you can see from my pic the complimentary rolls (AND matching amount of real butter) that came with our coffee. The Steel Cut Oatmeal was made with water and had a nice grouping of walnuts and marmalade. The Greek Yogurt Parfait, as you can see in my pic, had a plethora of toppings - all fresh and enhanced the yogurt. We stayed at the US Grant during our recent trip to SD, and decided to grab breakfast at the Grant Grill the morning we were flying back to NY because convenience. I enjoy sitting for breakfast when traveling, so it only made sense for us to check this place out. Like the hotel it sits in, the Grant Grill is filled with history - apparently up until the 70s women were not allowed in here until after 3pm; there's a convenient plaque just outside the restaurant that tells its story. Walking in, we were greeted by the lounge area which has an almost classic aesthetic - lots of medium woods with high-end details and fixtures. We were led towards the back of the space which opened up to the main dining room. This was also pretty grand with high ceilings, more wood, and an overall upscale feel. The breakfast menu is pretty standard - the obligatory items were there but they have a few things that are out of the box as well. Before even ordering, we were served three mini muffins with butter - these were tasty and a great start to our meal. I decided to keep the carb marathon going and get the gingerbread French toast for my main. This was ginger-flavored toast that was topped with pears and candied ginger. French toast isn't normally my go-to, but I have an affinity for gingerbread and couldn't resist. The dish was good - the toast wasn't overly mushy (sorry that's how I feel about FT) and they cut each slice in half which not only made it easier to handle but also aesthetically pleasing. Ginger flavor was definitely there but not overpowering. Service was great - Jose was very friendly and made sure our experience was seamless. Overall, I had a great experience at Grant Grill and am curious to see how their dinner service is; something to consider next time I'm in SD. read more

This is my go-to restaurant before seeing shows at the San Diego Civic Theatre. It's so easy to park at the Evan Jones Parking Garage, then walk one block past the theatre to the Grant Grill. The restaurant is so beautiful and classy. I sit on the grill side for a more casual experience, but I'd like to try the fine dining side sometime. The food has been okay both times I've been. I've had the chicken sandwich and the burger. Albeit, I had to take some unfavorable toppings off the chicken sandwich, and the burger was just okay. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable on the menu. It's unnecessarily freezing in here. On a 70 degree November evening, there's no need for AC. I look forward to coming back soon! read more

My friend was staying at the hotel so me met up for brunch. First thing I noticed was how friendly and attentive ALL the staff were A+! We were seated at a booth, already set with silverware and condiments. We were immediately greeted with mini muffins and water as we sat down. The was a vast menu offering, ranging to sweet to savory. I saw Niçoise Salad on the menu so I knew I was going to order that. When our server returned, he informed me that the salad didn't come with tuna. I could add chicken, shrimp or catch of the day for an additional $12. Which I found odd, everywhere I've ordered the Niçoise Salad comes with tuna. No biggy, I switched to the Avocado salad instead. Which was refreshing and perfect about of brightness. Worst hotel I've ever stayed at. Made the reso thru American Express fine hotels and resorts. First time ever that I was not only denied an upgrade, but they actually downgraded our room to a HANDICAP room with one of those creepy hospital showers with a curtain. On the lowest level. Then they said oops that was a mistake. But still refused an upgrade. And just put us in the reserves room after 2 hours of pleading. The restaurant was awful service. Drinks and food took like 30 min to arrive. Next morning we went to breakfast at 7:45 and they told us 30 min wait. AT AN EMPTY RESTAURANT. why? Because we didn't have a reservation. I asked the front desk at check in if we needed resos and they said no we are fine if we go before 9. Grant Grill is a very high end restaurant located inside the famous U.S. Grant Hotel in downtown San Diego. When I walked in for dinner, I was instantly greeted by a live Jazz band, which really set the mood. The server was extremely kind and funny, and he even gave us some complimentary champagne for our anniversary! The focaccia bread that came was delicious, although it was slightly too dense for my liking; however, the butter that came with it was truly delicious. The Ricotta Gnocchi then came out and was one of the highlights, with the sauce being spectacular. The Scallops and Ribeye were then served together, with my favorite being the Scallops as the Ribeye was a little overcooked for my liking. Finally, the dessert was delicious as the cream was light and refreshing! Overall, Grant Grill was an amazing, high end dining experience. I loved the service, ambiance, and food. We ate here twice during our stay and both meals left a strong impression. Dinner was packed and we were happy to get a reservation. The food was excellent. I highly recommend starting with their house bread and the gnocchi appetizer. For mains we ordered the veggie beef Wellington and the scallops. The scallops were cooked perfectly with a beautiful crust while staying tender inside. The Wellington was a standout with layers of zucchini and carrots inside a crisp golden crust that created a wonderful balance of flavors. The only downside to dinner was the service. Our server was rarely around and we ended up waiting 40 to 45 minutes just to get the bill taken care of. We came back for breakfast and the experience was much better. Service was attentive and on point, with drinks never running empty. My wife and I both recommend the eggs Benedict and the Grant Continental. If there is one thing that really stood out, it is the quality of the ingredients and the skill of the chefs. Despite the hiccup with dinner service, the food at Grant Grill is some of the best we've had in San Diego and well worth a visit. read more

We worked with the restaurant manager to have our wedding rehearsal dinner here. The correspondence and scheduling worked out well, and the manager was very responsive and helpful. They printed out our menu for our event, which we had 16 people attend. It was a nice touch, but they unexpectedly switched all three of the enhancements that we had originally picked out, which was a little annoying, but we were okay with. What let us down a bit was the service. It was as if it was the first time the waiters waited on a large group before. While going around, one asked our guests for their complete orders, including dessert, while the other only asked for drinks and starters. This caused a lot of confusion later on. Then between the starters, main, and dessert courses, the wait was very, very long. I know we had a lot of people but it was still a disappointing experience. We ended up ordering a lot of wine for the table during the waiting periods. The food was plentiful, and some of the dishes were good, but they were generally on the bland side and boring. Sort of middle of the pack when it comes to a hotel restaurant. The subbed in polenta enhancement had the most flavor with its parmesan cheese. Note on the live music: It was loud and made conversations difficult at times. Overall, it was an okay dinner, made better by the presence of our family and friends. I think the place is better catered towards smaller parties of older folks. That said, it might be a long wait before I give the Grant Grill another visit. read more

Quick Tip: The "Grant Grill Lounge" and "Grant Grill" are located in the same dining area. As staff will happily tell you, there is open seating and the menu color will tell you which food options you have; blue menus were for the lounge for us but I recommend asking to be sure. Over all, this restaurant surprised us with reasonable prices and portions (given the location) with quality to boot. Very impressed and would happily come back! The service was great with consistent water refills, fast open seating and quick food delivery. The ambiance is elegant, elevated and classy. The burger was absolutely amazing with a juiciness to die for, full meaty flavor and a snappy cheese that you can't miss. Best burger I've had in the last decade! The accompanied thick cut fries were just okay. The Ramen Egg was another amazing dish being our favorite ramen egg we've ever had (including all of our several trips to Japan). The Tuna was reasonable with the sauce but, even together, didn't blow us away. FYI, portion sizes are incredibly small for this dish. The charcuterie board was an incredibly big portion with tons of options. You've got honey, almonds, mustard seed spread, nut spread, jam, 2 different meats, 4 different cheeses, pickled veggies, and various fruits. Plenty of food with some good options but the meats were a big let down for us tasting worse than generic grocery store meat. The honey was our favorite but the portion size was incredibly small for this. The accompanied bread was very good. If you're reading this Grant Grill, take out the meat, the mustard spread, and the veggies. Just give us more of that delicious honey in their place! Also, I'd swap the almonds for pecans in a cheese board. We were given a complimentary dessert which was absolutely delicious! I named it as best as I could: a sesame cookie sit atop a scoop of ice cream over a blueberry treat with cookie-like texture in a pie-like crust. Hotel restaurants are oftentimes overpriced letdowns. However Grant Grill's dinner is not to be underestimated. The server was not lying when she said the focaccia was really good. It's served warm and is so butter and pillowy. One of the most memorable breads I've had at a restaurant. The main courses were done very well. Salmon was moist and skin was crispy. Also ordered one of the "enhancements", the potato gratin. Superrrr tiny it's a little silly. But it was yummy. The beet Wellington was super unique and the puff pastry was nice and crisp. Breakfast here though was a letdown compared to this dinner. Food took a longgg time but the servers here are very nice and were kind enough to comp us. read more

I was recently staying at the hotel and had the pleasure of dining at The Grant Grill for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. One standout was the turtle soup--it's not made with actual turtles (I think it's beef instead) but I can see why it's been on their menu for over 100 years. Another highlight was the complimentary focaccia bread that came with dinner. It was warm, fresh, and so delicious that I could have made a meal out of it alone. For lunch, I decided to try their Cuban sandwich and it did not disappoint. The flavors were spot-on, with the perfect balance of savory meats and tangy pickles, and it was just the right amount of food to keep me going for the rest of the afternoon. On another occasion, I went for the burger, and it was juicy, well-seasoned, and satisfied my burger craving. The location of the Grant Grill is also a big plus--right in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter, so it's super convenient if you're exploring downtown San Diego. After dinner, it's nice to just step outside and be in the middle of all the action, go to a speakeasy, etc. The ambiance is an antique vibe that's both classy and comfortable. Easy valet parking and a beautiful San Diego landmark hotel made for an inviting entrance and access to the restaurant. The lobby is highlighted by locally mined stone from its 1910 construction, and is beautifully decorated for Easter. Our server, the manager, and the other staff were super friendly and attentive. The overall atmosphere was perfect for the holiday and they even had a costumed Easter bunny to greet guests and share photo opps. The Holiday Buffet special offers both a menu entree and full buffet privileges, so be prepared to eat - and eat well! The entrees from the kitchen were the perfect size and delicious. We've never seen eggs cooked so perfectly and I had the best breakfast hash I've ever tasted. The buffet was top notch quality with several specialty stations for lobster ravioli, lamb slices and sea bass, crab claw and shrimp, crab cakes with poached eggs, cheeses and nuts, salads and an unbelievable apricot beignet dessert. The portions were the perfect size for enjoying all your favorites, and the price per person was well worth it for what we received! Let's start with the positives: The service was wonderful. While the foccacia bread was almost a light cake, it was still good and a nice way to start the meal. The atmosphere is very East Coast. (I guess that can be a negative if you don't like New York). The negatives: A lamb belly amuse bouche? If you have a vegetarian in the party, they are going to get left out. The ricotta gnocchi was so salty as be almost inedible. The foraged mushrooms must have been picked during a drought, they were that leathery. I'm not sure where the "creamy tender pea tendrils" came into play. As the description of the dish says, it was Swiss chard and onions. I thought there would be something creamy about it. But it was blanched leaves and sauteed onions with little taste. The pork chop my partner got was okay but definitely not worth $62. The service kicked this up to 3 stars, but I would have gone with 2 just because I paid $200 for a mediocre meal. read more

Our dinner last night was spectacular! I was looking for an upscale restaurant to take my mother that was within easy walking distance of the Civic Theater. I was a little surprised to discover no such stand-alone restaurants like this exist in this part of downtown. Grant Grill within the US Grant Hotel is it. But I needn't have been concerned - the restaurant is amazing. Gorgeously appointed inside, our dinner was off to a great start when we were shown to a comfy booth in the beautiful space. From the start, service was on-point by their professional and incredibly attentive staff. We felt pampered and well-taken-care-of throughout our meal. And our meal was truly delightful. We received freshly baked bread still warm from the oven with butter that was served at the perfect temperature for spreading. An amuse bouche of salmon poke was a nice and welcome surprise. The avocado and citrus salad (with roasted beets) was the perfect starter (my mother and I split the salad and it was the perfect size starter for both of us - our server was kind enough to split it for us in the kitchen). I had the barramundi and it was perfectly cooked. My mother enjoyed her salmon. To top it off, their prices were totally reasonable, especially considering the location and the fact that the restaurant is in a hotel. I'm honestly surprised they don't charge more. They offer a wonderful dining experience and we would love to return! read more

Another trip to the theater means another evening at the Grant Grill. I definitely advise arriving early if you are trying to eat a meal before grabbing your seat at the Civic Theater but the staff is always very efficient with getting everyone's orders in quickly so everyone makes it out on time. My mom and I love the light snacks that they bring when you first arrive. For this visit Hamilton was in town and they had a couple of different themed cocktails. My mom and I decided to share the grilled chicken sandwich that comes with their delicious fries, I love that they are crispy on the outside but soft in the center and not greasy at all so they have more of a fresh flavor. We also got the grilled chicken ceasar salad, the salad is topped with anchovies so if you aren't a fan I would be sure to ask for them on the side or not on the salad at all. My husband and I are locals. Living downtown there is so much to choose from. But you cannot go wrong dining at the Grant Grill. Friday night walk ins the manager was able to seat us in the fine dining room. A true Caesar salad to start followed by the most tender of chops with squash blossoms. My husband enjoyed the risotto special with Uni, which was also prepared to perfection. And to finish it off, a chocolate mousse dessert, which was devoured, despite being incredibly full. Samuel, our waiter, Eduardo, and the entire staff went above and beyond and helped us remember how service should be. The manager even stopped by to ensure we had enjoyed our meal. I was out with a friend to see Les Miserable and went to the Grant Grill for dinner on a Friday night. The atmosphere was delightful and I was so excited to have a delicious meal. It began with what they called home made focaccia. The texture was fluffy and spongy like a white bread. Not what I was used to in a focaccia. For dinner I ordered the scallops as described here: HOKKAIDO SCALLOPS - $54 Carrot Ginger Purée, Chanterelle Mushrooms, Lemon Foam, Carrot Crisp The scallops were about the size of a quarter, with the exception of one, and not many of them for a main course meal. They were overcooked - tough and chewy. The meal was cold. The greens were overcooked soggy baby bok choy. As you can see in the photo, the mushrooms are NOT chanterelles. If you are out of chanterelles, then say so. The puree and foam were unmentionable. The presentation was sloppy and unappealing. If our waiter had come to check on us or been visible, I would have returned the meal. He appeared next with our check. And we were off to the show. This was a very disappointing experience. read more

We always go back to this place when we are attending an event at the Civic Center. The lounge is amazing and constantly has great food, great service and lovely ambiance. Prices are also good which is a g very nice surprise these days. I can't recommend this place enough. If you are in the area, please try them out, you won't be disappointed. This place is beautiful! We had lunch at the Grant Grill and it was absolutely delicious. They started by bringing us a small dish with olives, seasoned cold potatoes and mixed caramelized almonds/pecans that were very tasty. We order the Grant Grill beef burger that was omg one of the juiciest burgers I've ever had. It was absolutely delicious. The burger was made perfect! The service was awesome and the restaurant was very clean and beautifully decorated! I will definitely be coming here again! read more

Recently stayed at the US Grant Hotel and decided to use the extra credits from our reservation towards breakfast at The Grant Grill. The host and servers at the bar were all very friendly and accommodating. We ordered at the bar and took our food to go. It wouldn't be a staycation at The US Grant without brunch at Grant Grill! I'm forever torn between savory and sweet, but you needn't make that difficult choice here as your server will immediately grace your table with complimentary house-made mini muffins in a variety of flavors. Sweet tooth thus satisfied, head directly to the savory items on the menu (do not pass go, er, griddle ;)! Both the Seared Duck Breast (Leek and Citrus Risotto, Fried Duck Eggs, Hollandaise Sauce) and Jumbo Lump Crab Quiche (Corn, Bacon, Celery, White Cheddar Cheese, Tarragon Cream Sauce) are elevated choices - the latter also comes with super crispy crushed potatoes and a simple but fresh salad - and will keep you full until dinner time. Service is attentive and accommodating, but be sure to check your bill because sometimes the menu prices don't match... Rather unexpected for an upscale restaurant, so I do hope they fix this! read more

My family has been dining at the Grant Grill since the 1960's. That was at the time women were not permitted into the dining room until 3:00 p.m. The room was reserved for top businessmen, movers and shakers only. One day in the early 1970's, a group of brave female lawyers stormed the door at noon and sat down and demanded to be served lunch. After a few hours of a sit-in, the women were finally served and the Grant Grill thereafter changed forever. Last night I dined with my Aunt Virginia at the Grant Grill. I like to sit in the semi-circular booths along the Fifth Avenue window. There was a bit of a glitch with the wine list. I ordered a French Burgundy and was advised that the only French wine the restaurant had was a Rhone Valley Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Despite the fact there were several French wines identified on the wine list [none of which were available], the Grant Grill manager promised the issue will be addressed. Service by Samuel was superb. He is a true professional and very knowledgeable about the menu. After the wine glitch, Samuel was able to offer an off-the wine-list 2018 Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon for $60.00 off the price the wine would be marked when it was added to the list. For dinner, we selected the plat du jour of a steak topped with bone marrow and shrimp. On the side, was a tartelette of Ricotta and cherry tomatoes, along with an onion marmalade. After the main course, Samuel graciously bought us "on the house" a Crème Brulee with a candle. Thereafter, we enjoyed an Irish Coffee. Because my aunt had her wedding reception on December 4, 1949 in the Rose Room banquet room downstairs [now called "Bivouac"] Samuel kindly guided us out of the restaurant to the Concierge to be shown the Rose Room. However, the concierge stated she was unable to do so--- "I have to leave" she said-- but she kindly offered us some vintage photographs of the banquet room. Accordingly, we walked downstairs on our own to see the room. As expected, and as we had been advised, it was locked. However, a very kind employee named Bob came over and let us into the banquet room, so Virginia could see where she had her wedding reception on December 4, 1949. Moreover, Bob provided us with a fascinating summary of the history and lore of the hotel. Thank you so much, Bob! The Grant Grill validates parking with the hotel valet, so all you pay is a reduced rate of $10.00. The valet, Ethan Emerson, was so kind and welcoming. He delivered our car with a smile and was a wonderful representative of the U.S. Grant hospitality team. Bravo to Samuel, Bob and Ethan! read more
